A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. 1 To those people who are continuously going the 1 x 750 ml
extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by x a 750 ml African. South
Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

MEC launches new WEEKLY 3 water purification plant stanger
MAKHOSANDILE ZULU
K
ZN MEC for Corporate Governance and Traditional Affairs Nomusa Dube-Ncube along with iLembe District mayor Welcome Mdabe and managing director of Sembcorp Siza Water Shyam Misra launched a new water purification plant last Thursday. In the wake of the ongoing drought, Dube-Ncube has welcomed the plant, adding that the recent rains and the commissioning of the plant do not mean that communities are past the difficulties caused by the drought. She said such infrastructure is costly and complex to setup and operate, however, the benefits out weigh the costs incurred. Dube-Ncube said millions of residents within the province generate waste which has dangerous effects on water sources hence attention must be given to the recycling of water. She said purification is necessary to ensure a sustainable supply of water for social and economic development, adding that government is committed to working with Sembcorp and other stakeholders to ensure water sources and supply is sustainable. The MEC said educating the public about water preservation would go a long way in terms of reducing the amount that is consumed. Misra said Sembcorp has drilled several boreholes which are monitored for compliance to help ease the effects the drought has caused. He said the new purification plant would produce three million litres per day. Misra said on Thursday the Hazelmere Dam had reached 50% thanks to the rains that fell recently. He said as of the beginning of the week starting 1 August 2016, restrictions would be reduced by 20% for domestic users and by 10% for commercial users. Misra said the plant and its network cost R15 million and that recycled water has already been blended into the existing potable supply. Mdabe commended Sembcorp for its efforts of ensuring water supply is sustained as this helps ease concern. He said the municipality has spent almost R180 million drilling boreholes and using water tankers to supply water to communities, and that had this persisted without any rain, the municipality’s funds would have been depleted by the end of August. With regards to the flash floods experienced last week, Dube-Ncube said it is imperative that drainage of storm

water be looked at, adding that in some parts, the floods occurred because members of the community have tampered with drainage sys-
tems. She said it is also important that ways to harvest storm water are conceived and implemented.

KwaDukuza experiences some relief >> Mayor delivers good news but urges residents to continue to save water JYOTHI LALDAS HE recent rainfall has brought some relief for some communities in the water restricted region of iLembe District Municipality with the water levels increasing in most dams and rivers. With the average of 120mm of rain received last week, Hazelmere Dam stood at 52.9% this week, which is slightly higher than last Wednesday’s 45,73%
A 30% curtailment and time of use plan still stands for areas located in the south of KwaDukuza Local Municipality, from Zimbali to eTete as well Ndwedwe Local Municipality. “We measured rainfall of 4mm at Hazelmere for the past five days. Ndwedwe and Groutville systems are still receiving water between 4am and 10am as well as 4pm and 10pm,” said mayor of iLembe District Municipality Welcome Mdabe. Production at the Umvoti Water-
works is stable, with the system producing 18 megalitres for the past five days compared to last week’s 15 megalitres. “Two weeks ago, we were sitting at eight megalitres per day. This week, all our reservoirs are at levels ranging from 60% to a 100%,” said Mdabe. Last week, Gledhow North and Gledhow South were at 10% and 50% respectively and were supplied with water tankers along with Lindelani Township which was at also at
10%. “We still have 15 tankers owned by iLembe, three tankers from the Department of Water and Sanitation and 17 hired tankers which will help with supplying water where the boreholes have been affected by drought.” South African Weather Service’s senior meteorologist Mduduzi Mthembu, said good rain can be expected today, Wednesday, 3 August. “Beside Monday’s rainfall, we are expecting 60% rainfall on Wednesday
evening for Ballito, Mandeni, KwaDukuza and Maphumulo areas,” said Mthembu. Residents and ratepayers across iLembe are still urged to use water sparingly and to continue saving as much water as possible. To report leaks and burst pipes or any water and sanitation related issues, please contact the 24 hour call centre on 032 437 9379 and like the ‘Ilembe District Municipality’ Facebook page for updates.

Multimillion rand skills centre opened
KZN MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Sihle Zikalala along with KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu, Sibaya Community Trust trustee Vivian Reddy and Albert Luthuli’s daughter Dr Albertinah Luthuli officially opened the Chief Albert Luthuli Skills Develop-
ment Centre last Wednesday. The R8 million centre, which is funded by the Sibaya Community Trust and the Vivian Reddy Foundation, will train approximately 500 unemployed youth every year. Reddy, who represented both the trust and the foundation, said training will be provided from Grade 10 onwards across a range of courses including welding, bricklaying, electrical work and plumbing. “Apart from catering for skills acquisition, we also hope to unlock linkages for our students,” he said. Reddy said the facility includes three lecture rooms, a large workshop, administration block, a reception and ablution facilities. Speaking at the event, Zikalala urged young people to take their education seriously and take advantage of the centre to obtain skills that would assist them to better their lives. “This is a remarkable investment for the future of this region, the province and indeed the country as we desperately need adequately and correctly trained citizens that would contribute towards the country’s socioeconomic advancements,” he said. The MEC said the centre’s launch came at an opportune moment as the iLembe District is destined to focus on renewable energy such as wind and solar power, meaning influencing the centre’s curriculum to offer courses related to this sector would be necessary.
We would like to urge the community of KwaDukuza to fiercely guard and protect this facility and treat it as an oasis for young people to quench their thirst for knowledge and skills.
Shakaville township, saying this negates apartheid’s spatial planning as previously disadvantaged and oppressed people will easily access an institute of education. Zikalala said it is important that the centre include maritime studies in its curriculum because the sector has the potential to significantly bolster the country’s coffers. He said his department believes that the promotion of locally manufactured products would help grow the economy, adding that Mandeni was a textile production hub and his department is focused on reopening the industries in the area that were shut down during a violent protest earlier this year. “We would like to urge the community of KwaDukuza to fiercely guard and protect this facility and treat it as an oasis for young people to quench their thirst for knowledge and skills. “This centre should educate and train young people to be able to sustainably earn livelihoods either as skilled workers or entrepreneurs in their chosen careers and sectors respectively,” Zikalala said. Dr Luthuli thanked the trust for naming the centre after her father in honour of his legacy. Mayor Mthembu said the project is welcomed in the area since it has such a high rate of unemployment. “It is critical that the poor get opportunities to acquire skills and this project provides this,” he said.

He further said since KwaDukuza is strategically positioned between Richards Bay and Durban, graduates from the centre stand to benefit from industrial growth witnessed on the North Coast. “KwaDukuza is part of the strategic development node for the department as it is close to the Dube Trade Port which has been designated as a Special Economic Zone earmarked for intensive industrialisation through economic infrastructure development and foreign direct investment,” Zikalala said. He said areas in and around KwaDukuza boasts successful agricultural and tourism businesses and are also experiencing considerable growth in the property sector. He applauded the fact that the centre is within walking distance from the

Reverend Dube speaks at the prayer.
WADUKUZA Mayor Ricardo Mthembu denounced on Monday political attacks in the province and called for “social co-existence”. “We have noted with great dismay the recent attacks against political representatives in various parts of our
province,” said Mthembu. Mthembu prayed for peaceful elections at an event organised by the KwaDukuza Municipality and the KwaDukuza Evangelistic Ministers Forum in support of unity, political tolerance and social co-existence. Mthembu said the recent murders of councillor candidates and ANC members reminded residents of vio-

Ballito has become a premier suburb north of Durban and Shakashead accommodates a burgeoning migrant community to provide cheap labour. In the long shadow of wealth stands the KwaMama Care Centre, which provides a free haven for over 100 township children. Women cook and clean at the centre and are paid in tokens, which are
Politics don’t matter in the shadow of wealth then redeemed for items which have been donated. Founder Frieda Bontkowskyj said the centre survives off a R6 000 monthly donation from a church and two businesses. “That is what we use to buy food. Other than that we use the donations of bread and other things that we get. That sustains our daily need of feeding the children,” she said. “Things that go into the token shop are things that are given to us. It is someone else’s rubbish that can actually still be used. Because people across the bridge are as spoilt as they are, we get so much. “Our organisation was born out of what people waste. If we catch that waste, we can have what we need to take care of the children.” Bontkowskyj said the centre provides a haven for children in which to play and learn.

Mandeni deputy mayor Phindile Sishi, Mandeni mayor Siphesihle Zulu, MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda, MEC for Social Development Weziwe Thusi and Mandeni speaker Makhosazana and iLembe deputy mayor Dolly Shandu.
MAKHOSANDILE ZULU THE MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, together with the MEC for Social Development, Weziwe Thusi, handed over the contract of the upgrade to the main road P415 and officially opened new social development offices as part of service delivery to improve socioeconomic development in Mandeni. Addressing an estimated 4 000 excited members of the public, Kaunda said the upgrade of main road P415 will boost the tourism and agriculture industries in the area. “The Mandeni area and the iLembe District are experiencing an increase in economic activity, especially in the tourism and agricultural sectors, which are strategic growth sectors for the province. The expansion of the main road P415, which goes over to Tugela Mouth and connects to the national N2 route, is needed. Further-
more, the construction of the road at R45 million will help create 60 direct jobs and enable the transfer of skills, and once completed after two years, it will improve access to schools, clinics, and other amenities,” said Kaunda. The newly-built, R16 million onestop social development offices offer, among others, early childhood development, elderly care HIV and Aids support services, care and support to families, child care and substance abuse support. “It has been a long road for the people of Mandeni as they had to endure being serviced by an office that was not well-equipped. We also thank our employees who had to work under very trying conditions, as they used to operate in facilities with no proper sanitation facilities. The structure we are handing over today will go a long way towards ensuring the provision of good quality services to the people,” said Thusi.

Guest speaker Nelson Reddy with Glenda Thompson and Preggie Naidoo.
HIRSCH’S Ballito held their monthly networking event, alongside guest speaker Nelson Reddy. Reddy is a successful and wellknown business coach, motivational speaker and sales trainer who has a huge following, eager to hear his daily advice. The talk was part one of a three part series which he will continue in months to come. His topic of discussion was about being the best possible you, and he explained useful techniques and steps in order to become the best you. Confidence is an important factor in any business, and guests were reminded of this throughout the morning, as he told some of his success stories. “Those who strive to be better than they were the day before, are the people who will succeed day to day,” said Reddy. Business networking takes place on the last Thursday of every month. For more information, contact Nicole Pivacic on 032 946 7400. She will not vote in the local government elections on August 3. “I am not going to because I don’t believe that politics or politicians can heal our country. I don’t know what we need. Giving people toilets and electricity doesn’t change things. The place is still full of dirt and neglect. If I knew I would be doing it. Maybe we just need to love our neighbours. “I will just carry on whether or not there is a new politician in the ward. The children here need to be fed and they need to be taught English to empower them to move out of Shakashead, but this place gets bigger every day,” she said. “This is a violent place, but it is not unsafe. You must live nicely with your neighbour or else you will be in trouble.”

Be an engaged voter RANJENI MUNUSAMY
I
t’s South Africa’s fifth local-government elections and it is worrying that many people are still undecided about who to vote for or whether to vote at all. The situation in other parts of the world, particularly the Brexit vote in the United Kingdom and Donald Trump’s terrifying rise in the United States, shows the dangers of being too complacent about democracy or making the wrong choice based on rhetoric. A few months ago, I was on a judging panel for a political debate among teams of high-school pupils. The teams had to make up manifestos for fictitious political parties and debate with each other on their respective ideological and policy positions. I was amazed at the knowledge and political maturity in the room as they
presented their arguments. Over lunch, however, I was astounded that some of the pupils said they would not be voting in the municipal elections, even though it would be their first opportunity to cast their ballots. One pupil said she did not think her vote would make a difference and felt that most party leaders make false commitments on the campaign trail. Of course, it is true that politicians should not be trusted based on what they say on the stump and it is easy to feel insignificant when you are one in 26 million potential voters. What worried me was that the young woman was so excited about engaging in a political debate based on fictitious parties and policies, yet she did not want to participate in a real-life process that could impact on her future. Unfortunately, she is not alone. People calling in to a Johannesburg radio talk show this week said they are disillusioned and feel that none of the
parties contesting the elections represents them adequately. One caller suggested that in future, ballot papers should have a box for “none of the above” so that disillusioned people could still participate in the elections but make it known that they do not support any of the parties. This is a better option than staying away from the polls altogether, the radio caller said. When you hear the amount of rhetoric and false promises on the campaign trail, it is easy to become apathetic. Many of the political leaders who have been zooming in and out of communities over the past few months hunting for votes, have done little to improve the state of the country while in the positions in which they serve. If anything, they make it worse. It is incredible that they make commitments about good governance and the accountability of councillors when they do not practise what they preach. It is particularly exasperating that

after interacting with communities and listening to people’s frustrations with poor service delivery, crime, drug abuse, the lack of jobs and inhumane living conditions, these politicians will disappear into their ivory towers after the elections and forget all that they heard. But does this justify not voting? It should not. Our democracy will be strengthened when we develop a society where people make informed choices about their elected representatives and are not swayed by rhetoric and election gimmicks. Our responsibility as voters does not end on election day. We need to remain engaged in what happens in our communities and local councils to ensure that those who are elected are held to account for their actions and commitments. This election has more parties than before, so voters have many choices, including independent candidates. It is important to be familiar with who the ward candidates are as it will be those people and not the national leaders who will be making decisions that will directly affect our lives. I advised the disillusioned pupil that if none of the parties fully represents her views, she should choose the least objectionable one. I am crossing my fingers that she will be in the queue today.

Terrifying Aids stats STATISTICS are essential but some times terrifying upon closer analysis. Take HIV stats, for example. Even though South Africa does not have the highest HIV infection rate or national population, we still have the highest number of people living with HIV/Aids at 6 836 500 (2014 figures ac cording to Wikipedia). China, India and the U.S. combined have 4 007 900 HIVpositive people, even though their combined population is over 55 times greater than our popula tion. Our infection rate of 18,92% is a ma jor national crisis. The highest HIVpositive rates are in Swaziland at 27,73% and Botswana at 25,16%, but our greater population gives SA more people needing treat ment. No war, political system or drought has come close to claiming the over 6,8 million lives HIV will take in SA unless a cure is found. I urge my country to commit to end ing this pandemic’s growth. All other economic, political and se curity concerns are insignificant in com parison. ROBERT NICOLAI
Thankful for the rain WHEN everything around us seems all doom and gloom with the severe drought, poverty, lawlessness, local-election tension, political killings, corruption, terrorism and so much more, the Lord still remains faithful. The recent rains are evidence that he never abandons his people. It is with great delight that I say thank you to the almighty for the tremendous relief that this water from heaven has brought in, quenching the parched earth. While many may still say that the drought has not been broken yet and farmers are still in dire need of more rain, let us be thankful for what we have just received. It is indeed so refreshing to smell cleaner air, to hear the tyres of vehicles sloshing through water on the roads and to see
little green shoots beginning to sprout in our gardens. The bonus of the snow that has fallen so close to our city has brought with it so much excitement to both adults and children alike. Indeed, this is a blessing from the God of all creation. We should not forget that we are the earthly stewards and custodians of all his creation and we should accept this duty with responsibility. So then let us conserve water for it is not an unlimited resource. Let us not pollute it and let us not waste it. I humbly appeal to everyone to play his or her role in saving water. Lord almighty, thank you for the gift of lifegiving rain. I pray that you will give us one more thing, “the gift of a grateful heart”. DENNIS MOODLEY
One of nature’s wonders WE are in a severe drought. Rivers and streams have been reduced to trickles and some have dried up. Dam levels are low and some towns have run out of water. The effects can be seen clearly as you drive inland from the coast, with green vegetation turning to golden brown. Except for the green patches of exotic trees that survive with their deep roots, the rest of the countryside has put on its winter coat and gone to sleep. But it’s in the thornveld that you see the drought’s effects. In the lower Mpushini Valley, there is only parched earth and stark, thorny trees. The Mpushini River, the lifeblood of the valley, has dried up and you wonder how people
and animals survive. But it’s in this inhospitable place that the aloe, which provides nectar in winter for bees and sunbirds, puts on a spectacular display, stunning against the harsh thornveld background. Showing off its racemes of crimson and orange, the aloe is one of nature’s wonders. Whenever I see the aloe in bloom, I wonder why it hasn’t found a special place in our gardens. It’s a hardy plant and needs no care. But gardeners will argue that indigenous plants are not beautiful. They would rather give care to thirsty exotics and drench them with our precious water. After all, they pay for it. T. MARKANDAN
TV licences SABC TV licences of R265 are futile legalities! We only watch etv and DStv, so why pay for 20% of SABC’s operating expenditure as only 30% of SA households pay their licence fees? Furthermore, if SABC news is so concerned about protests on TV, why not impound unlicensed TVs theoretically to reduce protesting vi-
olence by at least 70% and boost its income to fund the promised great local-content shows? Sure, the BBC TV fees are higher than ours, but in the UK the shows have no advertising breaks. If etv can operate without licence funding, why can’t SABC? VIA EMAIL

Entumeni Sugar Mill reunion THE community of Entumeni was a vibrant one, proudly existing in a rural area. It had its own orchestra, drama society and a sporting club. All religious and cultural events were observed. Every activity always received overwhelming support from the community. The residents regarded themselves as member of one big family. Sadly, the existence of the closely knit community was disrupted by the closure of the mill. This resulted in residents moving away to
settle elsewhere. Many had expressed the desire to host a reunion of the community and so a reunion committee was formed and one was organised. A reunion of the community of Entumeni will now take place on Saturday, 13 August at the Eshowe Town Hall commencing at 10am. The ladies from KwaDukuza Martial Arts (KDMA) showed their might when they participated in the Jeep Warrior Race recently. According to their trainer Humaira Khan the race was a fun and exciting way to build team strength and spirit.
Dolphins include KP factor in 2016/17 T20 plans THE Sunfoil Dolphins have re-signed global T20 star Kevin Pietersen for the upcoming RAM Slam T20 Challenge, adding a fresh injection of energy as the franchise prepares for the 2016/17 domestic cricket season. Pietersen has again signed a fivematch deal that will see him represent the KZN franchise in the second half of the round robin stage and will also turn out for the Dolphins in the playoff and final should the team progress to the knockout phase of the competition. “I’m as excited as anything to have signed with the Dolphins again,” explains Pietersen. “I had such a wonderful season with them last season and I really enjoyed the team, the camaraderie and the competition so it was a very easy decision to sign again for this season’s T20 competition. “It will be great to getting back onto the cricket field again and I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone in Durban again as well. “Here’s to a successful campaign!” he adds. While disappointed to see Sunfoil Dolphins CEO, Pete de Wet’s time in charge of the KZN franchise draw to a close shortly, Pietersen is relishing the opportunity of working with newly appointed head coach, Grant Morgan again. “It has been an absolute pleasure to deal with Pete (de Wet) – I’m sorry to
see him leave the Dolphins, but I’m really excited to work with Grant Morgan who I know very well,” says Pietersen. “I was privileged enough to spend some time with Kevin during my time at Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL back in 2009,” explains Morgan. “He was captain of that side and made an indelible impact on all the players, especially the youngsters.” “Its great to have Kevin coming back and playing for the Dolphins again this season. He is a world class player in all formats of the game and in T20 he is no doubt one of the best there has ever been.” While Pietersen’s mentoring role was again evident during his time with the Dolphins last season, taking players such as Andile Phehlukwayo under his wing and guiding the exciting all-rounder, it was his effort with the bat that left the most telling impression. The former Maritzburg College pupil and KZN age group player blasted 401 runs in just seven innings – including two hundreds and two fifties at an average of 80.20 and a strike of 172.84 – that ignited the competition as a whole and played a key role in seeing the Dolphins reach the final. Outgoing CEO, De Wet is another thrilled by Pietersen’s return and believes his inclusion in the squad’s T20 plans will yield positive results for the franchise.
“I’m extremely pleased we’ve been able to sign Kevin to the Sunfoil Dolphins again for this season’s RAM Slam T20 Challenge,” says De Wet. “He added immense value to our franchise last year and having a guy like him around can only do wonders for the Dolphins again this time around.” “I would like to wish the squad all the best of luck and hope that they will continue to put in the hard yards in the next couple of weeks and months leading up to the season. “I have no doubt that they will bring success to Dolphins franchise in the very near future,” says De Wet.
