A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. 1 x 750ml To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by 6 x 340ml a South African.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli 1 x 750ml ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style. 1 x 750ml

LENHILLS residents threatened to burn a TLB that was sent to the area by the KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) on Monday morning, to enforce a High Court judgment. The judgment permits the demolition of partially constructed and unoccupied houses - fully constructed - built illegally on municipal properties in the Happy Valley, Top Shop and Murugan’s Road areas of Glenhills. According to the court order, only homes that are not fully constructed and those which are not already occupied by residents - only if illegally built - would be demolished. KDM officials, accompanied by SAPS, riot police and crime prevention officers began the demolition in the Happy Valley area where one fully constructed structure was demolished. The “owner” of the structure was not present at the time. As they proceeded to the next site for inspection, community members began to threatened to burn the TLB if they continued, demanding the intervention of the ward councillor Rabi Singh and a complete stop to the demolition. This stopped the process temporarily as the driver of the hired TLB fled the

area in fear. Residents claim they were not informed about the enforcement of the court order and say they will not allow the process to continue. Angry lover sets house alight

Help find parents

>> Firefighters could not salvage a thing from the burning building MAKHOSANDILE ZULU

24-YEAR-OLD man was arrested last Thursday for allegedly setting alight his lover’s home on Saturday, 24 September in the Malende area. The suspect appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court and he is due back in court on 10 October for a bail consideration. It is believed that the value of the house and the goods lost in the fire is R500 000. KZN SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele confirmed the suspect was arrested and charged with arson. According to a member of the family whose house was set on fire, Zamanguni Gcabashe, the incident occurred after the suspect, who fathers a child with Gcabashe’s sister, had threatened to set the house on fire because he had been angered by the mother of his child.

Gcabashe said the suspect came to the family home late at night on the day of the incident and inquired about the whereabouts of the child’s mother. She said the suspect then left with his child after he learnt that his lover was not around, but had gone to see him, the suspect, in Groutville. “He came back 30 minutes later asking for the child’s clothes. “I then went to the house where they were kept to fetch the clothes for him, but he followed me until we were inside the house, and that is when he started saying my sister is making a fool out of him and he threatened to burn down the house we were in,” Gcabashe said. She said when the suspect damaged the TV that is when she became alarmed and ran off to notify her mother, who was at another house, about the threats the suspect was making. “When my mother and I returned we could smell that something was burn-

ing, but he [the suspect] told my mother that he had put out the fire he had started out of respect for her [the mother] and he left,” Gcabashe said. She said as they were preparing for bed in the other family house nearby the building that was set on fire, family members heard an explosion coming from outside, and she peeped through the window and saw that the other family house was on fire. “We tried putting out the flames with buckets of water but the fire was too big and firefighters had to be called, but it was too late,” Gcabashe said. She said firefighters could not salvage a thing from the burning building and family members, who had their belongings in the house have nothing left except for the clothes on their back. “Fortunately, no one was hurt, but the family is very concerned as we lost many valuable items, which include birth certificates,” Gcabashe said.

JYOTHI LALDAS CONVICTED rapist and murderer, Lindokuhle Mthethwa (22), was handed two life sentences at the Durban High Court last week. He was also given an additional five years for kidnapping and a further five years for housebreaking. Mthethwa raped and murdered fiveyear-old Velile Mngomezulu in July last year. The child was asleep in her room at home in Etete when the accused, who is also from the area, broken the door open and took the victim to a nearby bush. “She was raped and thereafter [Mthethwa] realised that the victim might be able to identify him. He then banged the victim’s head against the nearby rocks. “The victim was later found and taken to a nearby hospital where she died due to her injuries,” KZN SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said in a statement. A case of murder, rape, kidnapping and housebreaking was opened at the Umhlali police station for further investigation. Police, with the assistance of the community, traced and arrested the accused within 24 hours of the incident. He was charged accordingly with all counts and taken to court. Upon hearing about the conviction and sentencing, members of the community said while they were happy that justice was served, this does not bring back the young life that was taken. “Rapists and murderers and all other criminals must be clear that we will find them and we will have justice,” said one community member. KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner Major General Bhekinkosi Langa commended the good work displayed by Umhlali detectives who “thoroughly investigated the case”. “The members presented enough evidence to court that led to a harsh sentenced to the accused. “I also thank the community for their role in making sure that the accused was brought to court immediately after he committed the crimes,” he said.

Development Programme for the Department of Education (DoE) Mbongiseni Mazibuko, who spoke on behalf of the KZN MEC for education, said it is a matter of urgency that the iLembe District improves its matric pass rate because failure to do so would mean the matter will never improve. “If you can’t improve in 2016 you will never make it in years to come,” he said, urging pupils to focus on their studies. He said socioeconomic circumstances should not determine the academic progress or failure of a pupil. KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu extended his wishes to the pupils and committed to continue with the efforts of improving the pass rate. “A 100% pass rate for KwaDukuza schools is within reach and may be accomplished through your dedication. To those who have not done well to this end, there remains hope ahead of your examinations. “We support the Department of Education in all its endeavours to improve the pass rates in schools. The

ILembe District experienced a huge decline in the matric pass rates and as a result, we find reason for action. “We do this knowing this is not our core mandate, nonetheless, education as declared by our president, remains one of government’s highest priorities and we give respect to that effect”, Mthembu said. Mike Pitso, who was representing the office of the mayor, called on local non-governmental organisations, various government departments and stakeholders to work collectively to address social ills and the alarming prevalence of drugs and alcohol plaguing schools. “We wish our children could write their examinations in peace and not be disturbed by things such as drugs, alcohol and, or violence in the community or at home,” he said. The prayer was attended by a marquee full of pupils from local schools, religious leaders, who invoked the powers that be to ensure that this year’s pass rate improves, and motivational speakers, who gave the pupils a pep talk.

Healers say no to muti killings MAKHOSANDILE ZULU TRADITIONAL healers in the iLembe District held an awareness march last Wednesday, which cut through the streets of the KwaDukuza CBD and culminated in a discussion forum at the town hall. Organisers said the march was intended to express traditional healers’ collective rejection of muti killings – the killing of people living with albinism in particular – and the subsequent trafficking of human body parts. “We want the public to know that the body parts of a person living with albinism cannot make muti and we want to send a clear message to tradi tional healers that they should not use human body parts for making muti,” said one of the organisers Jab ulani Mkhize. KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu was part of the discussion forum at the hall where, during his address, he said the involvement and implication of traditional healers in muti killings make the fraternity lose its dignity. He said that is what makes such an intervention instigated by traditional healers so important as it would help restore not only the dignity of traditional healers but also that of indigenous cultures and tradi tions as a whole. The march was also intended to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal abortions and to also urge traditional healers to refrain from performing this act. A representative from the Department of Health in the iLembe District said an illegal abortion is the termination of pregnancy by an unqualified and inad equately trained individual in an area or place which does not have the required aides, such as medicines and tools or machinery necessary during such an oper ation. She said an illegal abortion is lifethreatening as the individual carrying out the termination could use the incorrect dosage since they are not suitably quali fied and, or in some instances, use concoctions made of disinfectant fluid and methylated spirits which are an extreme health hazard when consumed by a per son. She said that in some instances such concoctions permanently damage a female’s womb and urged young girls not to opt for an illegal abortion. “Our teenagers are in great danger that is why we have to talk to them and make them aware that the department of Health has numerous options they can explore in the case of an unwanted pregnancy rather than choosing illegal abortions,” the representative said. According to a traditional healer who practices in the KwaDukuza CBD Mgcinokwakhe Xulu, a few weeks ago another traditional healer was arrested after he was allegedly caught red handed performing an illegal abortion in a flat in the CBD. He said the police had been looking for the said traditional healer after an individual opened a case against the healer for swindling the complainant out of R17 000. According to Xulu, the traditional healer had prom ised the complainant that this amount would be mul tiplied, another practice, promises of a similar nature, which was criticised during the discussion and tradi tional healers were urged to refrain from making false promises. A call was made that traditional healers should form a knowledgesharing platform and work with the Department of Health.

ONE of South Africa’s most celebrated musicians will set the stage alight at the Sibaya iZulu Theatre on 7-9 October with a trip down rock n roll memory lane. Steve Fataar and friends promise a night to remember with Steve Fataar’s Golden Oldies, a night of celebrating some of the greatest music of the fifties, sixties and seventies featuring hits of the Beatles, Everly Brothers, Cliff Richard and the Shadows, Elvis and many others. Fataar will evoke nostalgia when he plays the biggest hits of The Flames, the band that took the SA music scene by storm with in the sixties, with hits like Tell it like It Is and Your Precious Love, which topped the charts in 1968. He later went on to tour the UK and U.S. with the group, sharing the stage with the Beach Boys and others. Fataar says the music of the Flames has remained close to the hearts of fans locally and abroad and he is looking forward to reliving the magic on stage again. “There isn’t a show I play when someone doesn’t ask me to play Your Precious Love.” While Fataar promises to play all the favourites, the show will also be an opportunity to bring to life other golden oldies

Manor trounce KwaDukuza Primary WEEKLY REPORTER

S

TANGER Manor Primary School trounced KwaDukuza Primary School by 4 wickets in the final of the 2016 edition of the Shivendra Velan memorial six-a-side cricket tournament hosted by Manor on Wednesday. KwaDukuza Primary lost the toss and were made to bat first by their opponents. The visitors came into the game boasting a nail-biting victory against Ashram in the semi-finals and were hoping to notch up back-to-back victories in the competition in the hope of retaining the KO Cup. KwaDukuza got off to a slow start, posting just two runs from the first over in their allotted 5 overs. They piled on the pressure in the 2nd over adding a further 11 runs to their tally. With all five wickets intact at the midway of their innings, everyone expected them to go on the attack in the hope of putting quick runs on the scoreboard. But, they played straight into the hands of their opponents after scoring just two runs from the 3rd over. With two overs remaining and KwaDukuza Primary posting a moderate 15/0 in their first three overs it was time for some action from their openers. They put on 9 runs in the penultimate over and were hoping to go at full throttle in the last 6 deliveries of the match. The KwaDukuza Primary openers frustrated the Manor attack taking

their tally from 24/0 to 36/0 at the end of their allotted 5 overs. Coach of the Manor outfit, Isaac Abraham was content with the performance of his bowlers and fielders and the run-chase of 37 was within their grasp. His instruction to the openers, Nceba Hoto and Kevlin Naidoo, was to ensure a minimum of 6 runs per over (which equates to run a ball). But, Hoto didn’t waste time, sending the first ball way over the boundary for a huge 6, which brought a sigh of relief for the Manor lads. But, KwaDukuza Primary had the last laugh after Nceba was clean bowled in the 2nd ball of the match putting pressure upon the home team. The loss the early wicket did not trouble the Manor lads, who went about their chasing their target in a business-like manner, crushing their rivals by 4 wickets with more than 2 overs to spare. The

ILEMBE Cricket Club walked away win ners once again after beating Dawn heights at Siripat Ground this weekend. Dawnheights won the toss and de cided to bat first on a tricky Siripat pitch. Dawnheights decision to bat backfired as they could on only compile a paltry 91/8 in 20 overs. Ilembe bowlers were at their miserly best as they removed Dawnheights top 5 batsmen for 28 runs. D. Rautenbach now batting for the other side was the stand out batsmen for Dawnheights posting 37 (not out), he was supported by A. Maharaj with 11. Top bowler for Ilembe was C. Shange who impressed with figures of 3/7 from 4 overs. Chasing 92 runs for victory at a calm rate of 4.6 to the over, Ilembe got of to a poor start and were in strife at 31/4 in the 9th over.

Y. Moosa making his debut for Ilembe and B. Ismail, tried to rebuild the innings by putting on 17 runs before Ismail was caught of the bowling of L. Moodley for 4. The next 3 wickets fell for 32 runs with Dawnheights bowlers taking wick ets at regular intervals. With the score on 82/8 after 17 overs the match was in the balance as Dawn heights needed 2 wickets and Ilembe 10 runs for victory. You could smell the tension in the air, but it was the Ilembe batsmen pair of R. Kazi 11 (not out) and D. Pillay 3 (not out) who held their nerve to see Ilembe home. Dawnheights bowlers tried their best with L. Moodley 4/33 in 4, A. Maha raj 2/11 in 4 and D. Rautenbach 2/13 after 4 overs. Ilembe scraped home in the derby by 2 wickets. Supplied.
