Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

HE Ballito Interchange was opened at Ballito on the N2 on Friday by the Minister of Transport Dipuo Peters. The minister was accompanied by KwaZuluNatal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda, iLembe District mayor Welcome Mdabe, KwaDukuza Municipality mayor Ricardo Mthembu, deputy mayors, SANTACO president Philip Taaibosch and provincial chairperson Boy Zondi, and members of the public. The interchange has helped to eliminate traffic congestion and long delays. Peters, accompanied by KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liason Mxolisi Kaunda and KwaDukuza Municipality mayor Ricardo Mthembu, placed wreaths at the scene of two fatal accidents that occurred last year. On 9 July 2015, Thulani Mashaba, Deputy Mayor of uThungulu District Municipality, died in a car crash near the Ballito turn-off. On 17 August 2015, a taxi crashed down an embankment at the Shaka's Head off-ramp and landed on railway tracks - before being hit by an oncoming passenger train. Sixteen people were killed in the accident. Peters said the Ballito Interchange project was initiated to expand capacity for traffic where the MR 445 crosses the N2. “The high congestion at peak times pointed to the need for improvements to be effected to the interchange to adequately provide for current 152 King Shaka Street, Stanger traffic demands as well as future traffic demand Call Ahmed on 082 684 6078 generated by the proposed developments surrounding the Ballito area, taking due cognisance of the expected traffic growth on the N2 due to the new King Shaka InShop 1, 1 Hullets Street, Opposite OK Mall, Stanger ternational Airport,” TEL: 032 551 1428 • CELL: 083 312 3561 she said. During the construction period, a total of R22.9 million was earned by 13 black-owned SMMEs while 104 people were employed earning R13.8 million in total. Various training programmes were provided ranging from engineering skills in jobs such as scaffold erecting and shutter fixing to safety awareness training in

ESIDENTS of numerous KwaDukuza suburbs have been left with no water following the shutdown of the Umvoti Waterworks on Monday. The shutdown was a result of the ongoing drought affecting the province. According to iLembe District Mayor Welcome Mdabe water levels at the Umvoti abstraction point have dropped drastically. Bleak news for KZN dams
Hirsch’s ‘Superchef’ winner
KAVEEL SINGH, NEWS24 SEVERAL KwaZuluNatal dams could dry up early next year, bulk water supplier Um geni Water said on Monday. The first predicted to reach “failure” level were the Hazelmere and Ixopo dams, in February 2017, spokesperson Shami Harichunder said. They would be followed by the Albert Falls and Nagle dams in April 2017, the Mid mar dam in May 2017, and the Inanda dam in December that year.
Hirsch’s Ballito held their annual Jun ior Superchef competition recently, sponsored by Defy Appliances, Snap py Chef, Zwilling and Green Pan. Winner of the Hirsch’s junior Super chef, Alexandra da Silva (front, left), with her family. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
“Failure is when a dam becomes dry and all that is left is silt,” Harichunder said. The consistent lack of rainfall in KwaZ uluNatal prompted Umgeni Water to re lease the predictions for dams in its juris diction. No increase in restrictions Harichunder said a joint operations committee resolved to keep the current water restrictions in place. The situation would be reviewed fort nightly. If restrictions needed to be in creased, an application would be made to

the Department of Water and Sanitation. “Water savings have become impera tive. To secure water resources in the fu ture, consumer behaviour has to change now.” Municipalities in KwaZuluNatal had to cut their water use by 15%. The commit tee had considered increasing this to 25%, but decided against it because of water savings already achieved. Mandatory water restrictions of 50% were already in place in the Hazelmere sys tem, which supplied the north of eThek wini and iLembe; and the Ixopo system, which supplied Ixopo and surrounds. The Hazelmere and Ixopo dams were being supported by water transfer through emergency schemes constructed in mid 2015. Decreasing dam lev els According to Hari chunder, the Albert Falls dam was of a serious concern because it re ceived water from the Midmar dam. Because of the low level of Midmar, releas ing water from it would not make a significant difference to Albert Falls. The Albert Falls dam in turn supplied the Nagle dam. These level of these dams, with the excep tion of Spring Grove and Mearns dams, fell by 0.5% weekly, Harichun der said. The level of the Spring Grove and Mearns dams was fall ing 3% weekly.

Hitman gets heavy sentence In January 2015, a convoy of security guards escorting Maphumulo taxi owners was ambushed by a group of people who appeared as construction workers. The accused was arrested by police in oSindisweni clinic, in eNdwedwe, on the day of the shooting, after he had sustained injuries during an exchange of gunfire. Kaunda said the attack was believed to be fuelled by tensions over routes between the old rival associations, namely the Maphumulo and KwaDukuza taxi associations. Commenting on the court judge-
S
IZWE Ngubane (35) was sentenced to 140 years imprisonment – four life sentences and additional 40 years – last week by the Durban High Court for killing taxi operators and security guards during an ambush on the R74 last year. KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda welcomed the sentence. Ngubane was found guilty of four counts of murder and eight attempted murder cases, which will all run concurrently.
ment, he said the court decision will go a long way in sending a strong message that perpetrators of taxi violence would be dealt with harshly by the law. “We wish to welcome and applaud the court judgement for handing down 140 years to Ngubane. We have no doubt this will send a strong message that the long arm of law will reach to all those who are fuelling conflict and violence in the taxi industry. “ We wish also to commend the team of detectives who were working on this case for their dedication and hard work in resolving this case. We urge police to work with speed in re-
solving all other outstanding murder and attempted murder cases between Maphumulo and KwaDukuza taxi associations,” he said. He commended the leaders of taxi associations and members who assisted with investigations by providing crucial information that ensured that the perpetrators of violence were arrested. “As government we will continue working with all taxi associations and Santaco leadership to ensure that we remove all hitmen who are brutally murdering taxi operators, and that they are brought to book.

to welcome and applaud the court for handing down 140 years to Ngubane. “The days of resolving differences through the barrel of a gun are over. We must all embrace peaceful dialogue in search for solutions to all our differences. “We are determined to achieve a stable taxi industry that is incident free,” said Kaunda.
Task team to investigate Maphumulo shooting MAKHOSANDILE ZULU THE KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa condemned the brutal killing of four people at Maphumulo. He urged different community formations to remain vigilant and continue to supply the police with information that will assist in bringing the perpetrators to book. “Possession of illegal firearms contributes immensely to murder of innocent members of the community and as a result the possession thereof by any individual must be reported to
the police. A task team has been formed to investigate the murders of four people,” he said. He said it is alleged that on Saturday, 2 July 2016 at approximately 5pm, at Ndaba area, Maphumulo, the three victims were attending a traditional ceremony when unknown suspects opened fire at them. Two people died at the scene and the other was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. “Again on Sunday 3 July 2016, at about 4am, a 30-year-old man was also shot while sleeping in the house where there was a traditional ceremony. “He sustained multiply gunshot
wounds to the body. The names of the deceased are Steven Khumalo (30), Mthokozisi Khuzwayo (31), Syanda Khuzwayo (35) and Phumlani Mpungose (40). The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage. We are appealing to anyone who might have information about the whereabouts of the suspects to contact the police or our Crime Stop number on 08600 10111,” said Langa. Meanwhile, KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda met with the families of those who lost their loved ones and members of the community where the murders were committed on Monday.

How countries around the world celebrate Eid >> 'Eid' is an Arabic word for festivity and 'fitr' means breaking the fast
E
VERY festival is steeped in ageold traditions that embrace a new shade as you walk across geographical boundaries. Eid ul Fitr, also known as the sugar feast, brings the month-long Ramadan fasts to an end. The celebrations commence with great gusto after the first sighting of the new moon and are known to last for about three-four days. 'Eid' is an Arabic word for festivity and 'fitr' means breaking the fast. While traditions may vary, food is central to almost every celebration in the form of grand family feasts. Here's how countries across the globe ring in Eid festivities differently, yet with the same spirit. Egypt The celebrations last for four days and unlike other countries, fish recipes form the centerpiece of the feast along with other delicacies like Fata (a classic Egyptian dish made with meat, rice, onions and vinegar) and Kahk (cookies filled with nuts and wrapped in powdered sugar). Afghanistan Egg fights are unique to the Eid celebrations in Afghanistan where men
Prayer is the common thread in all countries during Eid. gather in parks with hard-boiled eggs, trying to break the each other's egg. This is popularly known as TokhmJangi. Turkey
Eid is celebrated as a holiday of sweets and is popularly known as 'Seker Bayrami'. Children visit relatives and neighbours to greet them and are gifted with
sweets like Baklava and Turkish delight as a blessing. South East Asia Beef rendang (spicy meat curry), ketupat (dumplings), dodol (toffee-like
Four easy ways to use up leftovers from Eid I KNOW some people are particular are about leftovers and prefer only freshly-made food, but let’s get a reality check. That doesn’t work for most people who need to get back to work and get on with everyday life and don’t have the time or energy to continue the charade of menu planning, shopping and cooking- especially after hosting a party. I”m not sure about you, but when I plan a party, I often buy just a little more than what I need in case more people show up than I had expected. It all turns out well, usually, because I can send guests home with food and
anything extra will go in the freezer. It also just so happens that when I attend parties, other people are doing the same by giving food to guests like me who also have to figure out what to do with these extras. Below are three ways you can deal with them: 1. FREEZE cut ingredients and fin ished dishes Ingredients like pineapples, strawberries, cookies, bread, tortillas, tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic and fresh herbs - to name a few - can go right into freezer bags and into the freezer for later use in soups and stews and smoothies and other drinks. The same goes for finished dishes like rice,
pasta, stews, biryani, plain or seasoned rice, etc. 2. Ovenroast or grill vegetables Some vegetables can even be roasted first before heading them off to the freezer or you can enjoy them in a nice roasted vegetable pasta dish. 3. Make soup What is soup other than a mix of lots of cut vegetables and water plus meats, bones and broth, at times? You can throw so many lovely ingredients into a pot of water (after first sauteing some onion in olive oil or butter) and even throw in rice or pasta or potatoes to thicken the soup. Adding more water only extends the amount, which
means you can also do the next tip share the leftovers even more. 4. Share the leftovers If you run out of freezer space and/ or want to be a generous neighbour, colleague and friend, find someone who could use the leftovers to feed their own families or treat everyone at work with something to nibble on during work breaks. People love to see free food at work. Either way, as long as your leftovers are still fresh and edible, be sure to extend their use in some way and don’t consider throwing perfectly good food away as an option. -myhalalkitchen.com

WEEKLY confection) and lemang (a glutinous rice cake cooked in bamboo) are some of the dishes that adorn the menu. It is celebrated in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and with great enthusiasm in Indonesia where it is known as Lebaran. These countries follow the custom of mudik or balik kampung, where people meet their family and relatives and ask for forgiveness. Pelitas (oil lamps) are used to illuminate homes. Indonesia Besides the common South-Asian traditions, they prepare a special cake called 'Kue Lapis Legit', also known as the thousand-layer cake. It is inspired by the Dutch cuisine and is made with flour, butter and a host of spices. Burma People feast on desserts made with semolina like semolina pudding or cakes. The Burmese biryani, loaded with meat, spices and dry fruits, is also a favourite. Somalia Besides the elaborate banquets, xalwo or more commonly known as halvo, is served as a special delicacy. It is a simple sweet made with cornstarch, sugar, spices and oil. Saudi Arabia In some areas, it is a common tradition that people will put large rugs on one of main streets of their neighbourhood and each household shares their meals with the others. India The night before Eid is called 'Chaand Raat'. Women often apply henna on their hands and feet. Elders distribute gifts, money or sweets which are popularly known as Eidi. Diverse delights like Seviyan (vermicelli pudding), Hyderabadi Haleem (mutton stew), Kebabs and Nihaari Gosht are savoured. Iraq Dates are given utmost significance and a dish called Klaicha must be prepared by every household. Klaicha is a rose-scented cookie filled with dates and nuts. -NDTV

A
FEW weeks ago, I had the misfortune of sitting in front of two rabid racists on an 11-hour flight to Frankfurt. When I got to my seat, they were already rowdy and gushing alcohol fumes. I thought they would settle down once we took off and hoped my earphones would drown out the noise if they did not. What ensued was hours of torture in a confined space on a full flight, kilometres above the ground. In loud voices, the two men exchanged political views, their take on President Jacob Zuma and developments in our country since their heyday of white supremacy. Speaking in Afrikaans, they used derogatory terms to describe black people and referred to the president as daai hond (that dog). They continuously demanded drinks (“Klippies and Coke”) and called one of the cabin attendants a coolie when she refused to comply. Most people within earshot of their ranting were extremely uncomfortable. The senior hostess approached the men saying she had received complaints and requested that they quieten down. They claimed that she was lying that people had complained about them, obviously believing that the rest of us were delighted by their presence and fascinating views. I listened to this performance, contemplating what to do about it. I knew I would be sworn at or assaulted if I said something. If what I said caused a fight, the crew would be forced to intervene and perhaps land the plane somewhere. I could tell the crew were already in a dilemma about what to do and did not want to make the situation worse for them and everyone else on the plane.
CLASSIFIEDS ADS: Nalisha Diplal: 032 552 3363 stangerweeklyclassifieds@gmail.com
The fact that other passengers remained silent meant that they preferred to stay in the air rather than have to make an unexpected landing in a foreign country in the middle of the night or have the plane turn back. When the plane landed in Frankfurt, I fled as soon as I could, wanting to escape being in the men’s presence. I do not know if the airline took action against them but it looked as if the crew were simply relieved to be rid of them. I regret not reporting the matter but did not know whether the hate-speech complaint would have to be laid in Germany or South Africa, as most of the racist statements were made in indeterminate airspace. My regret increased this week after a Sodwana Bay guest house owner spouted his rationale for banning black people from his establishment. Andre Slade used the Bible to justify his racist views and claimed that God had created black people to be servants. He told black journalists that they should call him a king. Pointing to the hair growth pattern above his Slovakian girlfriend’s forehead, Slade claimed that white people’s royalty and superiority are evident by their “crowns”. KwaZulu-Natal’s MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Sihle Zikalala, took the initiative to lay charges against Slade. Addressing ANC supporters and community members who had gathered to protest Slade’s conduct, Zikalala said: “We want to make it clear that racism is not accepted in South Africa. “We want to make it clear that racism is costly.” Slade is seemingly unrepentant and says he will not appear in court as he does not recognise the South African Constitution. Some people on social media say that Slade should be ignored because he cannot be sane. Some of my friends say I should forget about the racists on the plane because they were drunk and confronting them would not have achieved anything. But racists thrive in our society because we make excuses for their bad behaviour or choose not to act against them. There is also not enough public education about how to act against racism. Zikalala is right that racism should be costly. It is the most effective way to rid our society of the scourge. • Ranjeni Munusamy is a political journalist and com mentator for the Daily Maverick. ranjeni.munusa my@gmail.com

Integrity, Respect, Accountability, Courage

Violent protests need to be stopped THE recent spate of violent protest action is giving South Africa a poor image abroad. This destruction and mayhem seems to continue unabated with no end in sight and South Africa has been accorded the dubious title of protest capital of the world. Never a day passes without the mention of violent protest action in some corner of the country. Hearing of protesters
blocking roads, burning tyres and cars and causing damage to property has become the order of the day. The security personnel either do not have a clear-cut strategy or they are not equipped adequately to deal with these volatile situations. This is a dangerous path to follow, especially when suspects are apprehended and released on warnings.
This is ultimately sending out the wrong message to people who want to indulge in violent acts. New stricter legislation with severe sanctions needs to be drafted to arrest the situation. Intervention is required immediately to put SA back on a positive road to recovery. VIJAY SURUJPAL Durban
Mass shootings IN the wake of the terrible shooting in Orlando, a political struggle is playing out over whether to define the massacre as an anti-gay crime or an act of “Islamic” terrorism. Although it is difficult to make sense of the conflicting information coming out, the massacre cannot be condoned. Taking the reports of his exwife, family and former coworkers into account, why
Omar Mateen committed the crime will likely never be known with clarity. The official story that he was “radicalised” and linked to Isis does not hold water. Beyond his 911 call moments before the rampage, there is no solid evidence linking him to Isis. Moreover, it has been reported that he was a patron of Pulse nightclub and regularly visited LGBT websites.
The number of mass shootings resulting in deaths is increasing in the U.S. Perhaps it is time for the U.S. government to re-examine its gun laws. Mass shootings and deaths are not unique to the U.S. However, in the U.S. they are increasing - why? MOHAMED SAEED

Yaris shows its true colours >> Dramatic colour combination
I
T’S a fact… white and silver are still the go-to colours for most Toyota customers. However, in recent times there’s been a fairly significant surge in popularity for some of the more exotic hues. Hence for 2016, Toyota has announced that it will make three all-new BiTone shades available for its Yaris supermini. This dramatic colour combo palette perfectly accentuates the highly distinctive architecture of the new Yaris, particularly the way in which the narrow upper and gaping lower trapezoidal grilles twist and merge at the point of the Toyota emblem, to form a powerful cross shape. This latest tonal option plays up the Yaris’s fun-loving persona by bringing a “wrap-around” metallic black exterior treatment for the upper half of the body paired with three, all-new exclusive colour ways: · Pearl White paired with a metallic black upper body · Crimson (Red) Metallic paired with a metallic black upper body · Grey Metallic paired with a metallic black upper body

‘Smelly’ vehicle WARNING signs MOST vehicles start out with a “new-car smell,” but there are other specific odours that motorists should never ignore. Identifying these suspect smells early can help car owners be car-care aware and avoid the hassle and expense of an unexpected breakdown. By acting quickly and making necessary repairs, you’ll be able to breathe easy knowing there is no harmful damage to your car: >> The smell of burnt rubber could be slipping drive belts or misplaced loose hoses that might be rubbing against rotating accessory drive pulleys. Do not reach in if the engine compartment is hot. >> The smell of hot oil could mean that oil is leaking onto the exhaust system. To verify the leak, look for oil on the pavement or smoke coming from the engine area. >> The smell of gasoline is likely the sign of a gas leak in some area of the vehicle such as a fuel injector line or the casino online fuel tank. Any smell of fuel can result in a possible fire hazard, so immediate attention should be given. >> The sweet smell of syrup may be a sign that your car is leaking engine coolant from a leaky component related to the car’s cooling system. Do not open the radiator cap when it is hot. >> The smell of burning carpet could be a sign of brake trouble and a safety hazard. Have your brakes checked right away, especially if this smell is happening during normal driving conditions. >> The smell of rotten eggs is never a good sign and, if you smell it coming from your vehicle, it could mean a problem with your catalytic converter not converting the hydrogen sulfide in the exhaust to sulfur dioxide properly. This smell can also be attributed to a poor running engine, causing the catalytic converter to become overloaded and fail due to meltdown. When you smell a peculiar odour, you should not ignore it. Instead take your vehicle to a professional service technician whom you trust to get an informed opinion on the nature of the odour. - www.carcare.org
