A number of reasons to celebrate
This week ONLINE
MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who 1 x 750ml are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime
our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some x 750ml 1 x 750ml times comes 1 to the fore. Ward 1 election process under scrutiny
>> Election fraud being investigated after opposition launches complaints
MAKHOSANDILE ZULU
O
PPOSITION parties in KwaDukuza have lodged complaints with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) over the employment of IEC officials and how elections were conducted in Ward 1 in the area. The parties include the Democratic Alliance (DA) the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP). The DA’s Thokozani Gumede opened a case of electoral fraud with the KwaDukuza SAPS. KZN SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant colonel Thulani Zwane said a case in terms of the Electoral Act is being investigated by KwaDukuza SAPS. “We cannot reveal further information as the matter is still under investigation. No arrests have been made and investigations are continuing,” he said. The DA’s Gumede said he managed to email his objections to the IEC on the day of the deadline (5 August). He said he spoke to an IEC official over the phone who is based in Pretoria. This official, Gumede said, told him her name is Nomsa Mahlale and he added that she acknowledged receiving his objection and further told him he, Gumede, would be responded to in writing. However, he said he has not received any response since. Gumede’s objections – and those of the EFF and IFP – are that officials employed by the IEC were known office bearers of the ANC Youth League in the ward and that some were allowed to campaign inside voting stations in certain voting districts. Furthermore, the complainants claim that some elderly citizens voted twice since their thumbs were not marked with ink when they cast their special vote and so they voted again on 3 August. In a letter written by the EFF’s Sbonelo Gumede to the local IEC appealing for byelections, it is stated:
“Day two special votes for station were inserted inside a box file instead of a ballot box, I raised my objection to the presiding officer, but she chased me out of a voting station and she also refused to give me MEC 9 forms because I’m also a candidate.” The IFP’s Sibonelo Mkhwanazi also said the presiding officer refused to issue him with objection forms.
He said his organisation wants byelections to be held and that the IEC must ensure that these are fair. ANC Greater KwaDukuza spokesperson Lucky Makhathini said the organisation would only issue a statement on the matter once the IEC informs the party formally about the objections raised. He said after the elections the IEC
stated the process had been fair and in some parts throughout the district where objections were raised the ANC would concede and since it was in a majority lead would hand over disputed number of votes to whichever party had raised the objection. According to the complainants, the IEC had not responded to their objections.

HE KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education is investigating the source of a viral Facebook video which shows two local school children in a brawl. The video, shot on a cellphone camera in a classroom, shows one pupil viciously assaulting another. Department spokesperson Muzi
Source of KZN school brawl video to be investigated Mahlambi said that when the video was brought to the attention of officials, they established it had been shot in February. “This video was from February and the school had taken action against the learners involved and they were sus-
pended. “What the officials established is that we needed to protect the child further and they interviewed the victim in this matter, as well as the perpetrator. We are happy with the way in which the school handled the issue,” Mah-
lambi said. Mahlambi said the department would investigate who leaked the video. “With this video doing the rounds now, the victim has been victimised twice,” he said.

“When children see videos like this, they think it’s cool, the department wants to send a very strong warning to children involved in bullying; we will not tolerate this in our system,” Mahlambi added. - News24

K
WADUKUZA resident and well known policeman Keerath Nunkumar is lifting his community to great heights after he was promoted to the rank of Major General. Ethekwini Inner South cluster celebrated the new appointment of their cluster commander Nunkumar, who was promoted to Major General on Thursday, 1 September. Nunkumar spent 32 years in the South African Police Service (SAPS) and welcomed his promotion to Major General after serving the communities of Durban, Pinetown and Chatsworth for 17 years as a Brigadier. Speaking to the Weekly, Nunkumar said he was proud of his achievements thus far and he is happy to bring honour to the small town. He added that he is grateful for the love and support of his family and friends and to the SAPS for recognising what he brings to the table in terms of policing. Nunkumar was born and raised in the small rural community of Nonoti. After matriculating in 1981 from Stanger High School, he began his career in teaching, only to realise his true calling and passion lay in the South African Police Service. He pursued his career as a constable in the SAPS in 1984, and he climbed the ladder by being promoted every two years. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1986, then in 1988 he was promoted to Warrant Officer, in 1990 he became a Lieutenant, in 1992 he was promoted to Captain, in 1994 he became a Major – where he was stationed at KwaDukuza SAPS - and in 1996 he was promoted to Colonel where Nunkumar held a position of deputy station commander in Phoenix. In 2000, Nunkumar was promoted to Brigadier and held a management position as the station commander of Pinetown SAPS. He spent four years in Pinetown before venturing into the post

His latest chapter began in 2008, where Nunkumar was placed in Chatsworth as the cluster commander, heading seven stations - Chatsworth, Bellair, Bayview, Lamontville, Malvern, Mariannhill and Kwandengezi. However, the clusters in South Africa were upgraded recently and Chatsworth cluster became Ethekwini Inner South cluster, welcoming Brighton Beach, Wentworth and Montclair into the cluster. O
VER the past 30 months, persistent below-average rainfall has been recorded at the Hazelmere Dam and its catchments as a result of the El Nino phenomenon resulting in major water restrictions in all of the Umgeni Water supply areas. However, in July and August this year, consistent with the El Nino effect, unseasonal rainfall was recorded at Hazelmere Dam. According to Umgeni Water’s corporate stakeholder manager Shami Harichunder it amounted to a total of approximately 180mm. Harichunder said while production of potable water will gradually progress to pre-drought levels, constant monitoring of raw water resource availability by the Joint Operations Committee will continue. “If the level of Hazelmere Dam falls sharply and if spring and summer rains do not materialise, the issue of re-imposition of production cuts and accompanying restrictions will be examined again in order prevent a crisis situation occurring. “It is, therefore, important that consumers continue to use water sparingly and also report incidences of wastage and leaks to their municipality.”

ADVERTORIAL Breaking up fallow ground JUST as there are seasons in the world around us, so are there in our interior life. We cannot expect it to be otherwise. Spring is a season of renewal and rebirth. It's a time when buds become leaves and flowers, when healing rain washes city streets and falls like grace on parched country fields, when the hard ground beneath us softens to allow shoots of new life to emerge. As outside, so inside. Spring is a time for cleaning out and making way for fresh possibilities and new commitments. It's a time to revive our senses and expand our horizons. It's a time to begin again. “Hosea 10:12 - It’s time to till the ready earth, it’s time to dig in with God, Until he arrives with righteousness ripe for harvest.
(Message Bible)” The season of spring in the natural is about to usher you into the supernatural realm. KwaDukuza Saints Church Cornerstone C.C.C under the leadership of Apostle Rajen Soobramoney invites you to four days of change and transformation. We as a church this spring have prepared ourselves to embrace the prophetic and apostolic. You need healing, wanting God to speak to you through His prophet or desiring to enter into another realm of the supernatural join us on these four nights of Breaking up fallow ground Conference. How to keep your grass green >> Spend time picnicking on your beautiful, green lawn
enough sunlight to be healthy. Repetitive cutting also damages your lawn and gives it even less of a chance to grow. Adjust your lawnmower blade so that it cuts the grass at longer heights. Also, make sure that your blades are sharp. Dull blades tear grass instead of cutting it. This means that your grass will take extra time to repair itself instead of growing thick and green. Water your lawn well, but at irreg ular times Water your lawn with at least 3 – 4cm of water at a time, but at irregular intervals. This will cause the top section of the soil to dry out, which means the grass roots will dig down deep to reach the water that has been stored there. Watering your lawn frequently means that the roots will not bother to search for water below because there will always be water near the top. Also, grass that is watered too often will create clumps and runners that block soil from being able to access sunlight and water. This weakens your grass. Postmowing care After mowing, leave grass clippings on the lawn. They will break down and compost, which adds nutrients to the soil. Poking holes in your lawn using spiked shoes, a lawn aerator, or even a screwdriver, allow moisture and air to get down into the soil and loosen it up. Fertilise your lawn in late spring and autumn before harsher weather hits to help your lawn against the harsher weather. -W24
