The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. >> ‘Youth must be informed’ MAKHOSANDILE ZULU

T

HE KwaDukuza Municipality, partnering with Livity Africa, hosted a debate on Tuesday, 5 April, where youth had the opportunity to engage with mayor Ricardo Mthembu on issues pertinent to them. Several issues were raised by the young participants including nepotism, the municipality’s bursary fund, dysfunctional ward committees and the absence of young people on these structures and the creation of sustainable jobs. Chairperson of the youth committee Councillor Sithembiso Magubane said young people are not represented during Integrated Development Planning forums, therefore, issues pertaining to youth are not raised and do not form part of the municipality’s developmental plan. Local youth activist Sihle Khwela applauded the municipality for providing new sporting facilities, but said in its 2014/2015 annual report the money budgeted for these facilities was not clear.

Taxi accident claims 8 lives

KwaDukuza mayor engages local youth He said the municipality needs to develop a system to follow up on the bursaries it awards to ensure recipients benefit accordingly. Khwela said he believes if young people are informed, educated and preoccupied with developmental activities, they would be less involved in protest action, would not have time to indulge in drug and substance abuse and unprotected sexual activities. He said on the Activate Leadership website – network for young leaders across the country – young people can find a document titled ‘190 ways of non-violent protest’ which could provide alternative means for young people to express grievances. Khwela said he started an organisation called Young Minds Empowerment Project through the youth leaders network Activate Leadership which gathers and churns out relevant information for young people. His organisation can be found on Facebook as Young Minds or contact Khwela on 074 333 1631. KwaZulu-Natal community policing forum youth board chairperson Lungelo Zulu said the municipality should play a role of empowering

a local private ambulance service at the scene before being transported to a local hospital for continued medical care,” he said. By Monday, the number of fatalities had increased to eight, according to a statement issued by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport. MEC for the Department, Willies Mchunu said a forensic investigation into the cause of the accident has been instituted and will be conducted by a team from the SAPS collusion unit, Road Traffic Inspectorate and Road Traffic Management Co-operation. The investigation will include a thorough check of the wreckage of the vehicle, overloading, the state of the driver as well as the road and the weather conditions at the time of the accident. Mchunu said the department would engage with the South African National Taxi Council and other relevant stakeholders to develop strategies to prevent such fatal accidents. “On behalf of government, I wish to send our deepest condolences to all the affected families. Government, through the Departments of Transport, Social Development and working with the Road Accident Fund, will do all it can to assist the affected families during this difficult period with counselling and funeral support,” said Mchunu.

entrepreneurs instead of what is happening where they seek to create monopolies which shut out youth in business. Community leaders have the role of supporting these youth in business initiatives and influencing the community to do the same,” Zulu added. He urged local councillors within the youth committee to push for a revision of the municipality’s supply chain management policy as, he said, it is currently failing to prioritise young entrepreneurs. “In its current state it fails to play a grooming role and therefore fails to support youth in business who find themselves competing with companies which have been trading for over 10 and 20 years and have massive experience and resources. “Not only that, they find themselves competing with companies from even other provinces which does not assist the local economy as a whole as those companies make money and leave and an opportunity for currency to be recirculated within the municipal boundary is lost,” he said. Zulu said the youth desk would push for 40% of youth representation in ward committees in the new term of office. With regards to the mayor’s comments that young people form a larger number of participants during community protests, Zulu said this can be “linked more so to information not being provided sufficiently, redress not being undertaken to update youth on developments on their concerns around municipal programmes and services.”

Water supply still a concern

Child’s mother sought MAKHOSANDILE ZULU NOSIPHO Dlamini (pictured) has been living with the Mfeka family in Ntshawini since 2008 after the family took her in because she had been abandoned and wandered into their yard. The family believes Nosipho is between the ages 13 and 14, but cannot confirm this as she does not have a birth certificate. That is why the family is reaching out to Nosipho’s mother, so that the mother can hand over the child’s birth certificate or assist the family with applying for one for the child. The family said it is rumoured that Nosipho’s mother – known as Jabu to the family – resides in Thembeni and that it is believed the child’s biological father is deceased. Anyone with information on Nosipho’s mother’s whereabouts is asked to contact Thembile Mfeka on 072 202 2216.

Jyothi Laldas and most definitely not to impress anyone. I recently saw a meme that described what I mean perfectly. It went something like, “Girls wear makeup to impress boys...As if I own 78 Mac lipsticks to impress some dude who doesn’t even know the difference between Sin and Diva. No!” Now I know that other ladies out there have their reasons for wearing makeup, many girls are genuinely empowered by wearing makeup to cover up scars that make them feel l less confident (notice how it’s all about the makeup wearer and their feeling and not what anyone else thinks) and to that I say more power to you. Do what makes you feel the best about yourself. No explanation needed. If anyone has something to say about it go on and ask them to tell you the difference between Sin and Diva and then upon their stuttering confusion continue to rest your case. NOTICE OF WATER USE LICENCE APPLICATION Notice is hereby given that an application for a Water Use Licence in terms of Section 21 of the National Water Act (36 of 1998) will be lodged with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Water and Sanitation, for the “Le Cheval Country Estate, Tinley Manor”. Project details: Sumlo (Pty) Ltd plans to construct up to 140 residential units on the properties of Farm Addington No 1785 and Garldan No 17904. These cover a total of 120ha. It is anticipated that each individual property would be 1 400 m² and 16 000 m². This estate will be a low-density development, thus reducing the impact on the surrounding environment by limiting the alterations from the current state of the environment and conserving the rural setting. Presently, the land use on site is sugar cane cultivation and the entire site has been allocated to this purpose. The proposed development entails the establishment of bridge crossings and minor impoundments at selected points within and proximal to the two water resource features identified within the site, thus altering the localised hydrology and aquatic ecological aspects of the site. EnAq Consulting cc has been appointed as independent environmental consultants to undertake the water use application for this proposed project. Public participation is an integral part of this process and all interested and affected parties (I&APs) are invited to register with EnAq Consulting cc (contact details below). Please ensure that your details and interest in the proposed development reach the consultant within 60 days of the date of publication of this advertisement. with their cars. Toyota believes that, over time, these collective moments make their cars irreplaceable to their owners. However, the Setsuna is not a piece of furniture – it is a fully functioning car, although not road-legal. For this reason, different types of wood were chosen for specific parts of the vehicle – including Japanese cedar, with its vivid grain and flexibility for the exterior panels; strong and rigid Japanese birch for the frame; hard-wearing Japanese zelkova for the seats; and smooth-textured castor aralia for the seats. The panels feature different grain patterns in the cedar, achieved with straight and cross-cutting of the raw timber, creating attractive contrasts. The concept of an “accumulation of moments” is expressed through the vehicle’s radial, circular emblem. While giving the impression of a blooming flower, the design also evokes the appearance of a clock that shows each individual moment. It is a symbol of hope that both family and car will grow together, just as trees grow larger and stronger ring by ring. While it’s also worth noting that there were no screws or nails used to assemble the Setsuna, its body comprises 86 handmade panels. Considerable

thought was given to the design and creation of the panels, each of which offers unique changes as the car ages. If repairs become necessary, individual panels can be replaced rather than large sections of body. It should then be possible for owners to identify areas of the car where remedial work has been done by hand, adding to the memories being passed down. To create contrasting elements within the overall design, aluminium has been adopted in parts such as the wheel caps, steering wheel and seat frames. Like wood and leather, metal is also known to change appearance over time, making it a material that will also develop its own unique look and character. On design, Kenji Tsuji, the Toyota engineer overseeing development of the Setsuna, says: “The completed body line of the Setsuna expresses a beautiful curve reminiscent of a boat. We would also like the viewer to imagine how the Setsuna will gradually develop a complex and unique character over the years. “The car includes a 100-year metre that will keep time over generations, and seats that combine functional beauty with the gentle hue of the wood.” - Supplied

T’S a no brainer that modern day Milan in Italy has become synonymous with style, which makes it the perfect city to launch Toyota latest design marvel concept – Setsuna. To call it a “design marvel” is no exaggeration, as it is a drivable car that is predominantly made from wood. The open-top twoseater will be the focus of Toyota’s first appearance at the Milan Design Week (12 – 17 April). The reason to use wood as the primary material for Setsuna’s construction was to express the notion that love grows as time passes, and changes in colour and feel in direct response to the love and care shown to it. The Setsuna symbolises how cars undergo a gradual transformation over the years, as if absorbing the aspirations, memories and emotions of multiple generations of a family. With the Setsuna concept, Toyota is expressing the notion that, as a family accrues time and experiences together with their car, lovingly caring for it and passing it on to the next generation, that car will acquire a new type of value that only the members of that family can appreciate. The car’s name – Setsuna, meaning “moment” in Japanese – was chosen to reflect that people experience precious, fleeting moments together

MAKHOSANDILE ZULU FRICAN Wanderers suffered their first defeat in the KwaDukuza Local Football Association Premier League – stream 1 this past Saturday when Real FC beat the side 1 – 0 in the two sides’ first encounter in the second leg of the season. The two sides clashed at the Gledhow sports field and from kick-off, Real FC was the more determined side who played to win, with Wanderers putting on a lustreless performance throughout the 90 minutes of play. Wanderers failed to capitalise on the two free-kicks awarded to them in the first-half – the first in the 20th minute and the second in the 30th minute. Real registered their goal 10 minutes before the final whistle which seemed to inject vigour back into their opponents whose efforts to level things came a little too late. African Wanderers coach, Mandla Thokozani Mthombeni said his players put on an average performance in the first half but lost concentration in the second half. He said the biggest challenge that his side is grappling with at the moment is a shortage of strikers and a goalie. “We need two more strikers and a goalkeeper. We could not convert our chances because we do not have strikers. But I am hopeful that in our next game we will get back to our winning ways. Meanwhile, Current FC walloped Shayamoya 13 – 0 at the Melville sports field on Sunday to take Wanderers’ top spot on the log. Current’s manager, Christopher Dube said the game went well and was handled professionally by the officials. “Maybe our opponents were just not prepared and luck favoured us on the day and that is how we managed to score so many goals,” he said. Dube said he hopes the team can maintain the impressive performance throughout the season so they can be promoted into the regional league. He said, however, what worries him about his team’s future progress is the financial woes that it has to deal with currently.
