A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. 1 x 750ml To those people who are continuously going the
extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by xa 750ml South African.
Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli 1 x 750ml 1 x 750ml ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Sixyearold shot in the head >> Security guard at taxi rank opens fire JYOTHI LALDAS
A
SIX-year-old girl was left fighting for her life after “accidentally” being shot in the head at the Shakaskraal taxi rank on Monday morning.
According to reports from the scene the child together with another bystander were injured after an argument between taxi security and a taxi driver. KZN SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Shooz Magudulela said the
security guard was allegedly attempting to shoot the driver of the taxi in which the six-year-old was a passenger. “It is alleged that a taxi driver was stationary at the taxi rank when he was approached by a taxi rank securiIPSS Advanced Life Support para medics work on the young victim. Magudulela said the security guard opened fire, injuring the two victims after the driver had responded to his question. “The suspect was arrested by Umhlali police at the scene for attempted murder,” he said. The exact details of the argument are not clear. IPSS Medical Rescue's paramedics were dispatched to the scene and enroute were redirected to Shakaskraal clinic where bystanders had taken the injured child and woman.
According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst, on arrival paramedics found that the six-year-old girl had sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was in a critical condition. “IPSS Advanced Life Support paramedics were quick to intervene and the child was intubated and placed on a ventilator. An appropriate receiving hospital was updated and received the patient for further emergency medical care. The other patient, a woman, sustained minor injuries to the face due to shrapnel and was treated and transported to Stanger Hospital.”

HE ANC Greater KwaDukuza Region convened its Lekgotla (strategy planning) on Wednesday, 7 September, “to evaluate and renew its programme of action,” the Regional Executive Committee (REC) said in a statement. Following the Lekgotla, the organisation has agreed that it will not be supporting the call for a premature and early ANC National Elective or Consultative Conference. The five-day conference was attended by members of the organisation, its alliance partners, members of the business community, government administrators, traditional leaders and other stakeholders. The REC said the meeting also took into consideration the feedback the organisation gathered from communities during its election campaign for the recent local government elections. “The five-day Lekgotla held at Meet Mekaar, Mtubabtuba, focused on the organisation and its structures and sought to ensure that the ANC and its government implement the commitments of the Manifesto of the recently held local government elections wherein the ANC emerged victoriously,” the statement reads. The organisation took several key resolutions drawn from six commis-
sions that were convened over the five days. These resolutions include adopting and committing to a Regional Local Government Bounce Back Plan which seeks to restore ANC’s trust and relevance in the eyes and lives of the people within the region. “The ANC has also resolved that the branches collate and submit immediately, a list of all blocked and abandoned projects to the ANC regional leadership for immediate political interventions. The KwaZulu-Natal flagship programme, Operation Sukuma Sakhe will be featured as a standing agenda item for all ANC branch executive committees, sub-regions, Regional Executive Committees and ANCled municipal councils,” the REC statement reads. The REC further stated that management positions in all ANC-led municipalities and entities within the region must be filled in line with the 50:50 equity principles in favour of women and the youth. Furthermore, ANC-led municipalities will immediately conduct a councillors’ skills audit to ensure that councillors improve their performance where necessary. “The ANC PEC and NEC shall

The municipal staff bursary programmes shall be categorised into generic and scarce skills programmes on a 40:60 budget allocation principle,” the statement reads. The organisation reiterated its commitment to uplifting vulnerable groups in the region such as the youth, women, children, senior citizens and people living with disabilities. With regards to education and health, the organisation said it has noted with concern the poor performance of schools within the District in the NSC for 2014 and 2015 and resolved to engage with the KZN MEC for

>> Minister and mayor welcome historic appointment MAKHOSANDILE ZULU

NKOSI Vusi Mthembu of the Nonoti area was recently officially recognised as the traditional leader of the area by the KZN government. Spokesperson for the department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Lennox Mabaso said that this falls in line with the KwaZulu-Natal Traditional Leadership and Governance Act, 2005 (Act no. 5 of 2005), which, he said, is founded in terms of the Constitution. “The family had its traditional leadership revoked by the colonial government for dubious reasons that undermined traditional leadership, in a bid to dismantle and divide the African nation,” he said. The MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nomusa Dube-Ncube visited the family to officially inform them of the pro-

Mabaso said this means the clan will now have its own traditional leadership restored. In her address to the family, Dube-Ncube thanked the government for the effort that has been put by them in trying to correct the wrongs of the past, especially concerning the institution of traditional leadership. “Our presence here with you
marks a turning point for us as government; as great effort has gone into correcting the injustices of the past through various legislation that are aimed at recognising those things that belonged to our communities, but were taken away from them by oppressive colonial governments. “The recognition of Inkosi Vusi Nicholas Mthembu as Inkosi in his community is yet another step being taken by the provincial government
to ensure that this important institution of traditional leadership continues to be strengthened in our province,” Dube-Ncube said. The department of Cogta has undertaken to build a community service centre in this community which will ensure that Inkosi is accessible to his community in the same vicinity as councillors, along with government services from the various sectors. KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu has described Inkosi Mthembu’s restoration as a traditional leader and the proclamation of the Nonoti area in KwaDukuza as a traditional community as a historic event. "We welcome the new developments, the recognition of iNkosi Mthembu proves true of government’s efforts to liberate the people who were previously robbed of their assets and powers by the government of the past,” Mthembu said. He said, however, that the recognition of Mthembu as the traditional leader of the Nonoti area does not award him ownership of the land, but rather this rests with the Inqaba Trust. Inqaba Trust will take responsibility for land related matters, mayor Mthembu added.

Prince (Tembe) Mtolo went missing on 1 September.
MAKHOSANDILE ZULU PRINCE (Tembe) Mtolo (10), from Dube Village, Groutville Station, was last seen by his family on 1 September. His mother, Sibongile Mtolo, said that on that day at around 6am he woke up from the bed and said he is going to the toilet and he disappeared ever since. She said he was wearing a pair of khaki shorts when he was last seen. This past Saturday, Prince’s mother reported the matter to the KwaDukuza SAPS. When the Weekly asked her why she had taken so long to inform the police, she said her son does disap pear at times, but never for a long period of time such as now and usually the son would be with neighbours and friends. “I’ve searched everywhere and he is nowhere to be found, I even went to the hospital and looked around the streets of KwaDukuza and yet nothing,” she said. Sibongile is pleading with anyone who might have information on her son’s whereabouts to please contact her on 060 315 3239 or Prince’s uncle Jabulani Mtolo on 082 488 3391.

Hyundai claims the new i30 weaves and matches technology with connectivity features. PHOTO: SOURCED

YUNDAI has taken the wraps off a refined new-generation i30 with improved dynamics, fresh styling and a new range of engines. The automaker's new flagship hatchback will make its debut at the 2016 Paris auto show later in September and should reach South African shores during the second half of 2017. N brand The new-generation i30 family will also feature the first high-performance model under Hyundai Motor’s N brand set to head into production in 2017. This high-performance model is likely to derive its power from a high-output 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. Peter Schreyer, president and chief design officer at Hyundai, said: “Our designers are driven by passion and enthusiasm bringing pride and joy to Hyundai owners. You see and feel this new spirit in the New Generation i30 it is a proud statement. With the New Generation i30 we are introducing our newly developed front grille: we call it the Cascading Grille. It will become the new identity of Hyundai.” Jochen Sengpiehl, vice-president marketing at Hyundai Motor Europe, says Hyundai has “listened closely to customer needs, redefining our offer to create a car for everyone. The new-generation i30 is our DNA car in Europe: ac-
cessible, appealing in design with innovative technology and great to drive.” Hyundai claims the new i30 weaves and matches technology with connectivity features such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and wireless charging to enhance smartphone operation and functionality while driving. Some of the latest active safety features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking, Smart Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist System, Driver Attention Alert and Blind Spot Detection increase passenger comfort even more. The highly rigid and light body with 53% Advanced High Strength Steel delivers the base for good ride and handling characteristics and, combined with 10% more direct steering and the newly developed chassis, the driver can enjoy the i30’s dynamic driving abilities without compromising high comfort levels, says the automaker. New range of engines The new i30 is powered by a range of small-displacement turbocharged petrol and diesel engines delivering a dynamic and efficient driving experience. There are three petrol engines and one diesel engine. They are the new 1.4 T-GDI turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine; the 1.0 T-GDI turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol engine; or the 1.4 MPI
4-cylinder petrol engine, as well as one diesel engine: the 1.6-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder, available with three power outputs. Hyundai says customers’ engine choice will depend on the range offered in a specific country and where the i30 is imported from. CO2 emissions start from as low as 89g/km (target value) for the 3-cylinder 1.0 T-GDI engine. Mated to the engines is either a sixspeed manual transmission or Hyundai’s efficient and direct-responding seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (7DCT). A family of cars The new-generation i30, designed at Hyundai Motor Europe’s Technical Centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany, is more than just one model. Hyundai claims it will become a family of unique products united by a timeless and balanced design coherent for every body type. The family offers the right car for everyone - for the ones looking for elegance, or the ones looking for exhilaration. The third generation i30 will be produced in the Czech Republic in Europa, as well as in South Korea, and aims to continue the success of the two previous generations of i30 that have sold more than 800 000 cars in Europe since 2008. -Wheels24
Weather improves for SA: Is your car ready for spring? SUMMER is fast approaching and motorists across South Africa need to ensure that along with the more pleasant weather, their cars, and their attitudes on the road, also need to be in tiptop shape. The Automobile Association (AA) said that drivers need to make sure their cars are in good condition, especially if they are look ing at taking advantage of the warmer weather to make longer journeys. The AA said: “If you are going on holiday, even if it is a long weekend, or if you will be using your car more now than in winter, it is important to ensure it is ready for the change in weather. Driving in summer months is dif ferent to driving in winter, especially inland, and there are a few things people must check before it’s too late.” Important checks Among the important items the AA ad vises motorists to check are their wind screens, wipers and tyres. It is also important that vehicles be visible at all times, including
at night. For this reason, owners should en sure their lights (front and back) and indica tors are also working properly. The AA warns: “Driving inland, many mo torists may not have used their wipers for a while. It is important, as we enter a wetter season, that these are checked and in good condition. Standing outside in the sun, or on ly using them to clear dust off the wind screen, may have damaged the wipers, and motorists may only realise this when there is a downpour, which is dangerously late to discover they don’t work properly.” Apart from this, the AA said any cracks on windscreens need to be repaired and that it is vital that tyres are checked to ensure they are in good, roadworthy condition. Too often, motorists ignore the condition of their tyres, which are a critical component to safe driv ing. Consider that during the summer months small pools of water may accumulate on the road, and worn tyres may lead to aquaplan
ing; this occurs when the tread on the tyres is no longer able to channel water away, and the tyre lifts off the road surface, and starts to skim across the water like a speedboat. Demands change with the seasons “As the seasons change, so too will the demands on your vehicle. It is important that motorists have their vehicles checked and serviced, and that they are confident that each and every aspect of the car is working properly,” the Association said. In addition, the AA again urged all drivers to ensure that their attitudes are positive on the road at all times. This includes not speed ing, not using any electronic devices while driving, and always wearing seatbelts. “During the summer when there are storms we all need to be aware that these will lead to delays for everyone, and that driv ers should remain calm and appreciate that everyone else is in the same situation,” the AA concluded.
