A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes 6x275ml to the fore. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. Defectors and independents to be expelled >> ANC leadership enforces strict rule MAKHOSANDILE ZULU

T

HE ANC Greater KwaDukuza Region says members of the organisation who defect to the opposition or register as independent candidates to contest the local elections in August will be expelled. This announcement was made at a press briefing on Friday at the party’s regional offices in KwaDukuza in the wake of at least nine of the organisation’s members having registered as independent candidates with the IEC. Regional spokesperson Lucky Makhathini says the party has written to all its branches within the region to inform members of this decision. He says letters have been sent to members who the regional leadership has confirmation that they have registered as independent candidates. Makhathini says some of the independent candidates have since “retreated” and expressed their intention to return to the party’s ranks. He says independent candidates who decide to come forward, return to the party, before the elections

will be treated differently, leniently, and would not be expelled compared to those who proceed with contesting elections as independents.

Local teen killed in crash JYOTHI LALDAS

T

HE KwaDukuza community is mourning the death of 16-yearold Uzair Aslam Manjra - son of local businessman Aslam Manjra who was killed in an accident last week. The Crawford College North Coast pupil together with two friends were travelling in a Renault Clio which allegedly collided head-on with a Hyundai H1 mini-van at the intersection of the Ruth First Freeway and Sandile Thusi (Argyle) Road. Uzair who was in the front passen-

ger seat and the driver, who has not been named, were trapped in the vehicle and paramedics and firefighters had to use the jaws of life to free them. The third occupant was ejected from the car on impact and suffered a broken leg. All examinations at Crawford College on Thursday were postponed. According to Netcare 911 spokeswoman Athlenda Mathe two occupants of the Hyundai H1 sustained moderate injuries. “In the Renault Clio, the driver and the front-seat passenger were both trapped - paramedics had to use the

Unfortunately, the front-seat passenger succumbed to his injuries on scene - paramedics worked tirelessly to resuscitate the man, but he was declared dead on scene.” Provincial SAPS spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwala, said the exact cause of the accident is currently unclear and they are investigating a case of culpable homicide. The remains of the car Uzair Aslam Manjra was travelling in.

opportunity. “If your are councillor you are meant to be a servant of the people, now people see it as a job, meaning if they are elected to represent a certain ward it means to them they are employed and will receive wages,” he said. Sabela further said the party has managed to stifle its opposition “to a point of almost non-existence” within the province leading to a situation where party members identify each other as enemies which results in the killings. MDUDUZI Mdletshe (40) was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment on Thursday, 9 June 2016, by the Inkanyezi Regional Court near Eshowe for the murder of Nomusa Mbokazi (30). The convicted murderer also received seven years for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm. KZN SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said Mdletshe shot and killed Mbokazi on 29 November 2014, at around 5:30pm, at the Mhlubulweni area near Mandeni following an argument between the accused and the victim. “A case of murder was opened at Nyoni police station for further investigation. Through investigation, the accused was arrested and found in possession of an unlicensed firearm in the Umhlali area. The firearm was sent for ballistic tests to establish if it was used in any other crimes,” said Zwane. Meanwhile, the KwaDukuza SAPS Tactical Response Team and Umhlali SAPS Task Team arrested a 31-yearold suspect on Friday, 10 June, at Lloyd area, in Ntshawini, for being in possession of heroin capsules. KZN SAPS spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala said the drugs are an estimated street value of R2000. She said the two teams were following on information that led them to the suspect’s place of residence where the drugs were found following a search of the premises. The suspect appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on the same day. In a separate case, John Ngwegwe (48) was sentenced to eight years in imprisonment by the Inkanyezi Regional Court last Thursday for the murder of Sindisiwe Gumede (56). Zwane said Ngwegwe stabbed and murdered the victim on 7 September 2015, at around 6:30pm, at the Lambothi area in Nyoni. Zwane said Nyoni detectives worked tirelessly investigating the cases to ensure justice is served.

scenes. Sabela commended the Greater KwaDukuza region for ensuring that 40% of its candidates to contest local elections this year are young people, a percentage the youth league had set as a target. “Young people from KwaZulu-Natal gave us a mandate to go and fight for youth representation in all strategic sectors of power, the immediate one was local government,” he said. During his keynote address, Nzuza urged young people to educate themselves about the youth of 1976 so as to gain an understanding that the uprising was not merely a revolt against Afrikaans being used as a medium of instruction but rather what the language represented – the systematic oppression of the black race. “These young people did not struggle for us to have rights and yet become alcoholics and be drug addicts. The youth of today must not spend time on things that do not matter,” said Nzuza. He said the current generation should define its own mission which, he said, is economic transformation. “Our mission is economic freedom in our lifetime, this means we must reclaim the economy,” said Nzuza. He urged the youth league to takeover leadership of the ANC so that it could fast track the implementation of policies drafted by the organisation to ensure economic transformation is attained. Nzuza called for an establishment of a state bank that would invest in the country’s development by financially empowering young people from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. He said free education is also a critical issue that needs to be addressed urgently. “The bottom line is, free education is the policy of the ANC and free education will free us as young people from the shackles that bind us to NSFAS and the repayment of its loans,” said Nzuza. He further urged South Africans to salvage the township economy by rebuilding tuck shops run by locals and that sell goods produced within the country. He said these are the pillars of economic transformation including the nationalisation of state assets such as mines. “The question is: are we ready as young people to stand up and fight for what belongs to us? And fighting, comrades, means we must be organised,” said Nzuza.

15 June2016

In loving memory of the late

Mrs K Munilal

Born: 14-06-1930 Called to rest: 06-06-2016 God looked around his garden And he found an empty place. He looked down upon the earth. And saw your tired face. He put his arms around you. And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful. He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering. He knew you were in pain. He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough. And the hills were hard to climb. So he closed your weary eyelids. And whispered “Peace be thine.” It broke our hearts to lose you. But you didn’t go alone. For part of us went with you. The day God called you home.

You and your family are kindly invited to attend the 13th Day Ceremony Date: Saturday, 18 June 2016 Time: 10am Venue: 61 Old Main Road, Etete

>> Winner of the most renowned award in the industry

O

N 29 February 2016, the new Opel Astra was nominated “Car of the Year 2016” and therefore the winner of the most renowned award in the industry. The 58-strong jury of automotive journalists from 22 European countries awarded the Astra a total of 309 points versus 294 for the Volvo XC90 and 202 for the Mazda MX-5. Opel CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann received the “ Car of the Year 2016,” trophy by COTY president Hak-

an Matson on the eve of the first press day at the 86th Geneva International Motor Show. The Astra emerged as the winner from a field of seven COTY finalists. More than 40 new cars, from sporty roadsters to premium limousines and sports utility vehicles, were among the original contenders. “The new Astra represents the start of a new era at Opel and victory in this year’s ‘Car of the Year’ competition shows that we are on the right track,” said Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann. “It is

an honor for us to receive such a prestigious award.” Jeeten Bodasing, Dealer Principal of Gemini Motors at 26 Strelitzia Road, Stanger, shares the sentiment as he proudly announces the arrival of this Super Car at his dealership. The vehicle is designed to impress the luxury class. Fitted with IntelliLux LED Matrix headlights, Side blind Zone alert and a traffic sign recognition makes you want to get into the driver’s seat. Call: 032 551 2211 now for more details. - Supplied

Apply to own allnew Ford GT in a month AFTER more than 10,800 people showed interest online in buying a new Ford GT, Ford received 6,506 fully completed applications from people around the world in the onemonth window to apply to purchase the new EcoBoost-powered, carbon-fibre supercar during its first application window. The number of applicants spiked in the last six days during which 32 per cent of the total fully completed applications were completed before the window closed. “We’re excited by the amount of enthusiasm fans are showing for the

new Ford GT,” says Dave Pericak, director, Global Ford Performance. “This initial application window is just one of many ways fans and potential owners will have to connect with our all-new supercar even before it hits the streets.” Ford is now reviewing applications from those 6,506 potential supercar buyers and will start notifying potential owners in the next 90 days. Hundreds of registrants submitted videos with their applications during the month-long application window, hoping to bolster their

chances of purchasing one of the first 500 new Ford GTs. Creative applicants featured children, lighting effects, racing footage, revving engines, garage tours and life stories to show why they should own the all-new Ford GT. The all-new production supercar is expected to start arriving in customers’ garages by the end of 2016. While the initial application window is closed, Ford GT fans can continue building and sharing virtual models at www.FordGT.com. - Supplied
