A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the 1 x 750ml

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of Africa. xSouth 375ml After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by 1 x 750ml a South African.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea 6 x250ml son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style. 1 x750ml

Amakhosi (tribal leaders). Among other things, we will focus on the development of youth by providing learnership programmes for young people,” she said. She said as mayor she also aims to engage with the Department of Economic Development to assist with creating employment for locals and endeavour to make Maphumulo a tourist attraction. Furthermore, she said she plans to work closely with the iLembe District so that its role and services it provides can be clearly outlined for the Maphumulo constituency. Khuzwayo-Dlamini has worked as a ward councillor, an executive member of the Maphumulo council and a member of the ANC Greater KwaDukuza regional executive committee. With regards to the ANC’s internal investigation, Makhathini said the or-

ganisation chose to withhold its findings pending the conclusion of COGTA’s probe so as to avoid any contradictions between the two outcomes. IFP’s iLembe District chairperson Msawenkosi Ngidi said although his organisation is concerned by the fact that a municipal manager is yet to be officially appointed, they, as an organisation, welcome the appointment of Khuzwayo-Dlamini and they are willing to work with her in council. In other areas within the district, specifically in KwaDukuza, the ANC suffered an unexpected upset in two wards, namely Ward 27 (Madundube) and Ward 2 (Darnall), which were clinched by independent candidates who were contesting in these wards. The two independents are said to be former ANC members who allegedly opted to go at it alone at the polls after failing to emerge during the candidate

IBUYISILE Khuzwayo-Dlamini, popularly known as Matozi, is expected to take over the helm at the Maphumulo Municipality following a resounding victory at the polls for the ANC in the area in this year’s local government elections. The newly-elected Maphumulo council will be inaugurated today, Wednesday 17 August at the Sabuyaze Sports Ground at 10am. According to the IEC website, the ANC emerged as the leading party in Maphumulo after racking up 56.54% of the vote, followed by the IFP with 24 262 votes – 39.82% - with newcomers the EFF at third place after managing to garner a paltry 1.4% of the votes – 854 votes. ANC Greater KwaDukuza regional spokesperson Lucky Makhathini said the organisation is satisfied with the outcome after bagging ALL AGES seven wards in Maphumulo, although it MATRIC/NQF4 fell short of the party’s target – which FLUENT was to retain all 10 wards it controlled ENGLISH after the 2011 Local Government ElecLEADERSHIP tions. This follows the organisation’s announcement ahead of this year’s local government elections that its members who registered as independent candidates to contest the elections would be expelled. At least nine of the organisation’s members registered as independent candidates with the IEC. Makhathini said in addition to the independents campaigning under the banner of the ANC in these wards, they had dragged the names of the party’s candidates through the mud during their campaigns. He said the ANC had not considered any coalition talks with other parties and independents as it received an outright majority throughout the district, but should the two independents

Rape suspect caught in the act 4

WEEKLY

>> One victim escapes, gets police assistance MAKHOSANDILE ZULU

A

35-year-old man accused of rape appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 8 August 2016, after he was

caught in the act on 6 August by the KwaDukuza police, KZN SAPS spokesperson, captain Nqobile Gwala said. The suspect allegedly picked up two females on Saturday, 6 August,

near the ‘First Tearoom’ in the KwaDukuza CBD after he had inquired about their destination and offered them a lift. The women wanted to go to Ntshawini, but the suspect allegedly in-

formed the victims, near uShaka Mall, that he wanted to see a friend in Gledhow before dropping them off. The suspect then allegedly made a detour into Gledhow and drove to the sports field in the area, where he stopped the vehicle and allegedly told the two female occupants that he wanted a drink of water. At that moment one of the female occupants in the vehicle apparently became suspicious of the suspect’s motives after she noticed that he was in possession of a firearm. After the suspect asked one of the females to come to the front seat, he then allegedly tried to rape both the females, but one of them managed to escape and alerted the KwaDukuza SAPS.

KwaDukuza SAPS spokesperson, warrant officer Johannes Khoza said when the police returned to the alleged scene of the crime – near the Gledhow sports field – with the female who managed to escape the suspect was caught in the act of committing the offence. “When the police arrived at the scene the suspect and the victim were getting dressed, possibly because the suspect was alerted by the police vehicle’s blue lights,” Khoza said. The suspect appeared in court on 15 August 2016 for bail and the matter was postponed to 23 August for a formal bail application. Gwala said the KwaDukuza FCS is investigating cases of rape and kidnapping.

The message that materialised during the session was that young women must make the best of the opportunities afforded to them so as to create a future which they desire.

Richard Masemola. The DBE has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with TEACH to place qualified graduates in disadvantaged and rural schools that have a shortage of maths and science teachers. The MoU is part of the DBE’s national strategy to address the shortage of mathematics teachers, as well as to ensure the promotion of mathematics as a subject necessary for the growth of the South African economy. In its 2015 technical report, the education department pointed to a drop in results in science and mathematics-related subjects. The technical report showed that for mathematics, the percentage of pupils who achieved above 40% in 2015 was 31.9% – down from 35.1% in 2014. Ntombi Mashishi, recruitment and selection officer at TEACH and former TEACH ambassador says: “The future

TEACH South Africa (TEACH) in partnership with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) is calling all maths, science and English graduates to put their degree to good use and become TEACH ambassadors in 2017 by volunteering two years of their time to teach in underperforming schools across the country. “Since 2009, TEACH South Africa has placed 435 TEACH Ambassadors in eight provinces and in 211 schools, impacting more than 40 000 pupils across the country. We recruit graduates from the finest South African universities who are not only top achievers, but who are committed to being change agents in South Africa because teaching is a passion and we need our ambassadors to be passionate about making an impact on the education system,” said TEACH South Africa executive director

Apology for misprint A Legal Notice was printed on page 13 of the 10 August 2016 edition of the Stanger Weekly wherein J A VYTHE LINGHAM was cited as the Judgment Debtor. This was a MISPRINT as JA VYTHELINGAM is in fact the Judgement Creditor. This confirms that J A VYTHELINGAM does NOT owe the KwaDukuza Municipality any monies which were handed over to JAY PUNDIT AND COMPANY to recover, as printed in the said legal notice advertisement. J A VYTHELINGAM is, in fact, the client of JAY PUNDIT AND COMPANY. THE ERROR IS REGRETTED

With effect from the 01st July 2016, the various State Institutions may only utilise the services of service providers registered on the CSD.
