A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

way community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

anced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

Etete residents protest over housing >> Protesters burn tyres and barricade R102 MAKHOSANDILE ZULU

E

TETE residents, fed up with housing promises that allegedly never materialised, took to the streets burning tyres and barricading the R102 demanding answers. The service delivery protest, which started on Sunday night, came to a head on Monday night and continued into Tuesday when protesters blockaded the R102 between Etete and Groutville. Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Vinny Pillay said on Tuesday morning an estimated 300 protesters were at the ‘second stop’ in Etete and were complaining about housing. He said the protesters had blocked the R102 with tyres, trees and railings broken from the side of the road, adding that members of the police were in the area to monitor the situa-

tion. Pillay said on Monday the protest in the area had been brought under control, however, on Tuesday morning protest action had erupted again. One motorist who was attempting to enter Etete on Tuesday morning, said the protesters threatened to stone her vehicle if she did not leave the area. Speaking to the Weekly on Monday, Etete Ward 7 councillor Gideon Mbonambi said residents were protesting due to a postponed community meeting regarding RDP housing which was scheduled for Sunday, 17 April. Mbonambi said residents were notified that the meeting was postponed until next week. He said although the situation was tense, traffic was flowing in the area. On Tuesday, KwaDukuza

Municipality communications officer Sphelelo Ngobese said: “Although we may not fully be certain that this protest is a direct result of housing and settlement alone, we have prepared a report on the status of the housing project as we have reportedly heard that the [main] issue is housing delivery.” He said council members and the municipality’s officials would meet with the protesting community on Tuesday afternoon to inform them on the status of the housing project. “We are looking forward to a peaceful resolution following the anticipated engagement with the community,” said Ngobese. At the time of going to press the protests were ongoing and council representatives were yet to meet with the community.

Newark SAPS crime roundup MAKHOSANDILE ZULU AN Ethiopian tuckshop owner was shot by unknown suspects at 6pm on Sunday at his place of business, Majola Tuckshop in Bul wer Farm, Newark. Newark SAPS spokesperson Malusi Ngubane said: “They shot him on the upper left arm and left side of the chest and fled the scene with cash and a cellphone.” He said the victim – who is known as Sol omon – was taken to the Stanger Regional Hospital and a case was opened with the Newark SAPS and investigations are under way. “No one has been arrested so far. We urge the community to report anyone they

suspect to be in possession of a firearm. We also urge tuckshop owners not to stay open until late because that puts them at risk,” said Ngubane. In a separate incident, a 57yearold woman was allegedly assaulted by her 37 yearold son on Friday in Bulwer Farm, New ark. Ngubane said the son allegedly used a stick to beat his mother until her arm broke. He said it is alleged the two had been arguing over money that the son was de manding from his mother – a pensioner. Ngubane said the son was arrested by the Newark SAPS. He said the suspect has appeared in court and a judgment is yet to be passed.

ELL-KNOWN taxi owner Devendran ‘Dan’ Maharaj (48) was fatally shot by two unknown suspects on Friday afternoon in Etete. KZN SAPS spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the motive for the killing is unknown at this stage.

“A case of murder was opened at Umhlali police station for investigation and no arrests have been reported. We cannot confirm whether the incident is related to taxi violence or not since the matter is still under investigation,” said Zwane. He said the suspects fled the scene in a white Toyota Yaris. Dolphin Coast Taxi Association chairperson Richard David said the association is also unaware of the motive behind the killing. He said no other member of the association has been attacked since the incident. David said the association has left it to the police to investigate the matter. Protesters in Driefontein block roads A

SERVICE delivery protest erupted in Driefontein on Monday with protesters blocking

roads. Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Vinny Pillay said the area was inaccessible on Monday morning. On Monday, KZN SAPS spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said: “More than 100 people blockaded the road complaining about service delivery. Police are at the scene monitoring the situation. No arrests have been made.” Speaking to the Weekly on Monday afternoon, Driefontein ward councillor Vuma Mdluli said he had not re-

ceived a memorandum of complaints from the community. With regards to reports in which protesters were demanding he vacate his position since he had failed to deliver services in the area, Mdluli said voters would decide during elections if he should continue as councillor should he be nominated as a candidate to contest the elections. He said the community could have called a meeting where service delivery issues would have been addressed accordingly. He also said according to his knowledge housing is the only issue which still needs to be dealt with. Mdluli added he does not believe

Assistance sought by Nyoni SAPS DETECTIVES from the Nyoni SAPS are appealing to Sandile Sosha Mjadu (pictured) to come forward and assist them with investigations into a murder and attempted murder case, said KZN SAPS spokesperson, Major Thulani Zwane. “He will be of great assistance in solving these crimes. Members of the community are also urged to call the police should they see him in the area,” he said. With regards to the cases, Zwane said it is alleged that on 2 June last year a farmer and his brother were shot at their homestead at Nyoni Farm, in Nyoni. He said two rifles and a pistol were taken during the robbery and that a case of murder and attempted murder was opened with the Nyoni SAPS. “The police believe that the man in the photograph can be of assistance in solving the cases.” Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Major Colette Bruwer of the iLembe Cluster Detectives on 083 555 0525 or 032 551 8231 or our Crime Stop number 08600 10111.

that the protest is related to service delivery. He believes that there is a group of people behind the protest action who are intent on having an individual of their choice stand for elections. He said this group disrupted a public meeting in the area several weeks ago where the ANC’s four candidate nominee to contest in the elections were to be introduced to the community. “The individual favoured by this group is not a member of the ANC,” claimed Mdluli. He also claimed the group also took part in the protest in Shakashead where a councillor’s house and vehicle

were set alight, although the group are not residents of that area. Mdluli said members of this group were once part of the ANC but left the organisation in 2011 when they failed to “emerge” ahead of the local government elections of that year. He said the group is disrupting the ANC’s nomination process and that the party has not named a candidate to contest elections for the ward. According to Mdluli the protesters claimed to have sent a letter to the ANC Greater KwaDukuza Region regarding their grievances, adding that he has no knowledge of such a letter. ANC Greater KwaDukuza Region spokesperson Lucky Makhathini said

MANDENI Mayor Siphesihle Zulu recently announced that a community hall will be constructed in Makhempini, Isithebe. This comes after an Integrated Development Plan and budget meeting was held in the area last week, 7 April, as part of the municipality’s programme of action to address the impact the recent protests had on the local community. Zulu said as the term of the current council is drawing closer to an end, outgoing councillors should

ensure that service delivery is fast tracked. He also announced the contractor – JPL Mkhize Civil Construction and Trading – adding that since a contractor had been appointed construction of the hall will begin soon. Once complete, the new hall will seat 225 people and will have an office for the councillor, ablution facilities, changing rooms and a kitchen, and it is expected to be complete within six months. “We therefore urge you to support us as the municipality,

he visited the area during the recent voter registration weekend. He said he met with the party’s provincial executive member Mxolisi Kaunda at one of the registration venues who informed him that he (Kaunda) had conversed with and noted grievances raised by members of the local branch and that these would be reported back to the Regional Executive Committee (REC). Makhathini said he then suggested to the members that they inform others that a meeting between the branch and the REC will possibly be convened before Friday, 22 April, to address the issues raised. He said he believes it is possible that protesters were not aware that the REC would be meeting with the branch to address issues. Makhathini said the region deployed someone to the area on Monday who would report back to the REC.

and people should refrain from stealing equipment from the construction site as this might cause delays to the completion of the project, if you buy from those thieves you should know that you are hindering your infrastructural development,” said Zulu. He said the installation of street lights in the area is in the pipeline. He further stated that the community work programme will increase the number of workers it employs to 32, and that those who

wish to become business people should come forward so that they will receive training at uMfolozi College in a programme run by the municipality. Zulu also handed over work equipment to small businesses in the area. The equipment included a block-making machine, a sewing machine and a grass-cutter. The mayor said R143 million has been allocated for the continuation of the housing projects in wards 11, 9 and 16, adding that R202 million has been set aside to continue with the electrification project. .

HE iLembe District’s top matric achiever for the class of 2015 and former Stanger Manor pupil Jisheel Kanaye attended an international youth camp in Bergen-Belsen, Germany recently. Kanaye’s ticket to Germany came after he was chosen as one of three pupils to represent the district in a national youth camp following his participation in a local debate session organised by the Luthuli Museum. He was then chosen at the national youth camp as one of five pupils to represent the country in Germany. He left for the 13-day camp on 14

March on the longest, coldest and most uncomfortable flight he said he has ever taken. The medical student said the experience was worthwhile because it taught him about ethics within his profession of choice when they were taught about Nazi doctors who were involved in hazardous medical experiments. “I gained life skills and learned a lot about World War 2 and I had the opportunity to make friends from Europe,” he said.

Kanaye said the group of international campers also learned about Nazi ideology, euthanasia, World War 2 concentration camps, and had the chance to converse with war survivors and explore historical sites. “We were involved in a number of workshops and not only did we learn about the war, but we learned about other countries and cultures as well. People exchanged souvenirs from their countries,” he said. The straight-A student said although he was saddened by celebrating his 18th birthday far away from home, he en-

sang happy birthday for me in five different languages,” he said. Kanaye said although language was a communication barrier since some attendees spoke English as a second language, the entire experience was beautiful and he loved it. “The last day was sad, people started crying because they realised that they probably would not see each other ever again, but thanks to technology and social networks we still keep in touch,” he said. Irsin (Ronnie) Pillay A person of immense greatness and humanity whose strength carried us through all obstacles. A person who was willing to help without any rewards. Whose honesty, integrity and loyalty still leave many in awe. He loved and cared unconditionally and taught us that family support was the cornerstone of all virtue. He gave us so much yet was so simple. He imparted great wisdom and knowledge to all that was around him. He taught us that self respect led to great success. Words cannot describe our heartfelt pain. A very special part of us was taken away. You’re the man we loved and we were proud to be your family and everyday, in some small way we celebrate your life. When we are reunited, it will be forever more. You and your family are kindly invited to attend the Yearly Memorial Service of the late Irsin (Ronnie) Pillay.
