A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the 1 x 750 ml
extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South 24 x 330 ml x330 ml African.
Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Minister conducts Mandeni imbizo >> Radebe says government officials should fulfill their duties to the public MAKHOSANDILE ZULU
T
HE Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (DPME) and chairperson of the National Planning Commission, Jeff Redebe, held a service delivery imbizo in Mandeni on Wednesday, 13 July. The imbizo led to unannounced monitoring visits to service delivery facilities in Mandeni where Radebe assessed the quality of work being done and services delivered. He also visited the Mandeni South African Social Services Agency (Sassa), Home Affairs offices and the local clinic. He said he noticed during his visit to
the Sassa offices that they urgently need to be refurbished to ensure the elderly can access them with ease and be serviced accordingly. “When we visited the clinic, we saw three nurses working hard there. We are happy that this clinic, which was built in 2007, is open for 24 hours each day and that the community receives adequate health services,” said Radebe. He said a radiology machine should be purchased for the clinic and young people should be trained to work the machine. Radebe expressed his dissatisfaction with the local home affairs offices saying it is lamentable that the services
are not on par with what the department has set as a standard of performance throughout the country, but he said he is hopeful that discussions held with management would yield positive results. He said government hosts these imbizos in communities throughout the country as a way of communicating with members of the public to assess whether services are delivered accordingly. Radebe said government officials and individuals who embezzle public funds should face the law and people who drag their feet with regards to fulfilling their duties in assisting communities should face disciplinary action.

MAPHUMULO mayor, Happy Ngcobo, handed over a tunnel farm worth R7,5 million on Tuesday, 12 July, at Mambedwini area, Ward 9. The handover was attended by the ward councillor who is also the deputy mayor, Mr. M.P. Mbonambi, Inkosi B.C. Khuzwayo and local headmen. The facility was built because the municipality believes it will contribute significantly towards poverty alleviation and empowering the community. "Maphumulo has fertile land that people can rely on and use to generate
an income and feed families," said Ngcobo. She said the municipality will support the community to ensure the facility is sustainable, adding that iLembe Enterprise will also support it. Ngcobo encouraged the community to register co-operatives in order for them to supply supermarket chains. The tunnel was built by Asande Projects, which took three years to complete, and employed 20 local construction workers. The tunnel has state-of-the-art equipment which includes water pumps that supply the 19 tunnels and
a cold room that will be used to store the produce. She said the four trainees recruited to work on the facility were picked from the community and were trained on how to use the tunnel’s equipment. Ngcobo said the community works programme members will be responsible for ensuring it is cleaned regularly. Mbonambi thanked the community for ensuring that building of the tunnel was successful and asked the community to ensure that the facility is not vandalised. Traditional leaders thanked the mayor and her deputy for the farm.

Water rationing now in place >> ‘We are better of than other districts’ – iLembe mayor JYOTHI LALDAS

When asked why the CBD receives water while other areas are shut off, he explained that water is pumped to the Saunders Street reservoir, which is KwaDukuza’s main reservoir. “Water goes to Saunders Street which supplies town first then once it reached a certain level it begins supplying the other reservoirs as we have no direct line from the Umvoti pumps to the other reservoirs. This is the reason the CBD always has water. It is not a matter of selective distribution but of system design. We cannot change this.” Those areas will then have to be supplied water through water tankers which most times have to travel to Mandeni Local Municipality for the water. In addition, co-ordination of the tankers, 37 in total, throughout the district which includes Mandeni, Ndwedwe and Maphumulo in addition to KwaDukuza, is an ongoing challenge which, Mdabe says, they are working on getting right. “This has proved to be very expensive and as such our finances are drying up. Under normal circumstances we will bill for R15 million for both prepaid and conventional metres and collect about R12 million. Since the drought started, two years ago, we bill for R6 million and only collect about R3,5 to R4 million. This drought has a direct impact on our financial stability as a municipality,” said Mdabe. Regardless of these challenges, Mdabe said that iLembe was still able to meet its obligations with the help of the residents and business community. “Fortunately we haven’t used conditional grants in mitigating the impacts of the drought. This is an extraordinary situation indeed as it has a direct impact on our revenue and service delivery.” Addressing the sand mining issues, which were a direct cause of last year’s month long dry spell, Mdabe spoke about the blitz done in November 2014 with the intention of flushing out illegal sand mining at the Umvoti River by the national Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) in partnership with the iLembe District Municipality and KwaDukuza SAPS.
“In 2015, iLembe also had its own blitz which resulted in the municipality hiring an excavator to close the little dams that had been left behind by illegal sand winning. “Twenty-one cases have been opened as of end of March 2016. We recently checked with the justice system to find out what is happening in terms of resolving this and the response we received is that the matter is still with the National Prosecuting Authority,” he said. Addressing the problem of burst pipes and water leaks, Mdabe expressed his gratitude to the residents and ratepayers for the positive response to appeals for water conservation. “The leaks and burst pipes are a result of vandalism, our aging infrastructure and also as a result of the drought because of the constant opening and closing of supply to save water. We are currently installing pressure valves to address this challenge,” he said. Mdabe said another sore point for residents, which is now being addressed is upgrading it 24hour call centre system to enable it to log complaints and to inform callers of the current situation while they wait for a consultant as opposed to just ringing continuously as it does now. “At the moment the call centre is made up of two telephones and often operators are on calls and are unable to take another, in this instance the line just keeps ringing making it seem like the call is
LMOST 10 months since the ongoing drought in the province loosened its grip on KwaDukuza, water shortages, restrictions and complete shuts have once again reared its head. In October last year, KwaDukuza faced a full month without running water in most areas. Now, communities in KwaDukuza have - since last week - begun experiencing the tightening grip of the drought, this time with little to no sign of resolve. The people of Glenhills, Lot 14, Lot 16, Townview and surrounds - which are the high-lying areas of the town have been the hardest hit, going on more than seven days without running water. Other areas including Stanger Manor, Stanger Heights, Lindelani, Shakaville, Warrenton, Highridge and New Guelderland – which are also said to be in high-lying areas - were left without water since Saturday, however, on Monday evening supply returned to most of these areas. The community has been up in arms over the “apparent lack of communication on the part of the municipality” taking to social media to air their complaints. According to many of the residents who aired their views, they believe that the iLembe District Municipality has lacked foresight in planning contingency measures for the drought. To further exacerbate the situation, according to residents, iLembe failed to communicate adequately with the community as to when and for how long water supply would be shut off and what, if any, relief measures were put in place for those affected. On Tuesday morning iLembe District leaders engaged in a press briefing in an attempt to dispel the notion held by residents that iLembe is doing nothing to address the plight faced by the people of the district as a result of the drought. Addressing the media, iLembe mayor Welcome Mdabe said the drought is now no longer just a disaster but at crisis level. “The Umvoti Waterworks – which supplies the northern areas of KwaDukuza from the CBD to New Guelderland - is currently producing eight million litres a day – via the depletShop 1, 1 Hullets Street, Opposite OK Mall, Stanger ing Umvoti River. WO rural communities from Ntsikeni and Dorinkop, under the KwaDukuza Municipality jurisdiction, received electricity after living without it for many years. The switch on was done by KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu on Thursday. They became the latest electricity beneficiaries out of 785, whose houses had received electricity. “This historic action confirms the call made last September that there must be a zero percent backlog by the end of 2016,” said Mthembu. He said the municipality is committed to ensuring that every household is connected. "Council spent R18 million on integrating the current energy in-

frastructure to cover three areas in KwaDukuza which had no electricity before," he said. In Ntsikeni 283 homes were connected with 502 from Dorinkop. On Friday the mayor visited the community of Driefontein to launch a similar project. “This has been a huge responsibility for me as mayor as I have been engaging with these communities for far too long and it is a gratifying experience to deliver this project to the people on time. “It is also a historic milestone for council and a life-changing experience for local people who have been here for the greater part of their lives,” said Mthembu. He said in September the municipality commissioned the expansion of the energy grid in areas where Eskom was the licensed owner and supplier. "We did this through a Schedule 5D (Schedule 6) application, which allowed us to extend the Eskom network. “We want to make life without electricity a thing of the past," said Mthembu. Ntisikeni resident, Fana Cele (70), who lives with his 56-yearold wife Rosemary, said the electricity has improved the standard of living in the area. "Things have not been smooth sailing here, I've lived here all my life, but our lives have improved since the introduction of this project some few weeks ago. “We now use electrical appliances. We have ordered a new fridge and are investing in a television - it is a whole new experience for me and my household. “I congratulate the mayor for delivering this project on time, this shows the kind of leaders we have in our community, leaders who listen and take serious action to improve the lives of other people. “I thank the mayor for keeping his promise and for listening to our concerns,” said Cele.

The Chief Albert Luthuli commemorative walk for a good cause MAKHOSANDILE ZULU THIS Saturday, 23 July at 7am, will see hundreds of participants from diverse areas in KwaZulu-Natal and various provinces descend upon the popular area of Groutville for the Chief Albert Luthuli walk, sponsored by the KwaDukuza Municipality, Enterprise iLembe, Durban ICC, Old Mutual, Transnet, Department of Arts and Culture, and PHS. The 11, 5km walk will commemorate Chief Luthuli’s final walk to the railway bridge where he had an accident that led to his untimely death. Historically, this year, it will be 49 years after the tragic train accident on 21 July 1967 that killed Chief Albert Luthuli. He was a devout Christian, chief of Groutville Amakholwa Tribe, president of the African National Congress, and the first African winner of the Nobel Prize. Luthuli had been walking from the family grocery store, Nonhlevu trading store in Nkukhwini near Gledhow, to the family agricultural fields across Umvoti River in Thembeni. He was using the railway bridge to cross the river when he was struck by a train. Accordingly, the walk will be from his home in Groutville (which is now a world-class museum) to the accident site, back via the grave site at the Groutville United Congregational church to the museum. The way the commemorative walk is structured is great, there will be three water stations - Charllottadale, accident site, and UCC. Medals and walkers’ gear (caps and t-shirts) will be given to participants. At the museum, health care providers will provide free screenings to the public. These screenings encompass cancer screenings, heart disease, diabetes, TB and others. Participants who have entered are encouraged to collect their gear at the Luthuli Museum as from Friday. Furthermore, on that same day, a volleyball tournament will be held in KwaDukuza at the recreation grounds in accordance with the Chief Albert Luthuli commemorative walk.
Free breast, prostate cancer screening JYOTHI LALDAS THE Upper North Coast Region of the Sathya Sai International Organisation of South Africa will be hosting a free cancer screening wellness clinic on Saturday, 23 July, at Sai Shruti Service Centre, 18 Berthwell Drive, from 8.30am until 1pm. The medical camp is one of the community outreach programmes that the organisation is undertaking to serve those who would otherwise not have access to this type of medical care. Professional services will be offered in two disciplines - breast cancer and prostate cancer screenings. In order to provide an effective, efficient and comprehensive service those who are interested in attending are requested to RSVP by emailing Deepa Moodley on moodleydeepa15@gmail.com or on calling 083 555 3525. Due to limited number of patients who can be attended to on the day, screenings will work on a first come first serve basis.

FRUSTRATED KwaDukuza woman who shot and killed her philandering husband for infecting her with HIV/Aids has created a quilt in which she tells her story. Her quilt is one of about 400 which Westville and Kgosi Mampuru prison inmates made. They are currently on display at the International Aids Conference currently under way at Durban’s Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre. Thandi Shabangu (43) is serving a 20-year jail sentence at Durban’s Westville prison for murdering her husband and six years for the attempted murder of his colleague in 2012. The sentences are running concurrently. She told her story during an event at the prison on Monday, at which the quilts were handed to the premier’s office. The quilts will be donated to 16 KwaZulu-Natal orphanages. The gesture was intended as an apology to children orphaned by crime. The mother of two children, aged 25 and 6, said life with her husband, who she married in 2004, was perfect until she was diagnosed with HIV/ Aids. “I was pregnant when I found out

that I was HIV positive. I had gone to see the gynaecologist and my husband was working in Pongolo at the time. You know when your husband is away from you, many things happen,” said the former traffic officer, who discovered that her husband had been unfaithful. Despite the infidelity, Shabangu decided to stay with him because, she said, he was her pillar of strength. Miscarriage "Every time we went to the gynae, I would ask him, what was going to happen to the ba-
by. He said I should relax because people were living long lives with HIV. I did not believe him, my CD4 count was 55 and the viral load was more than 3000." Shabangu said she was overwhelmed by everything and she lost the baby. When Shabangu eventually started antiretroviral treatment she suffered another setback when the side-effects of the medication prevented her from
driving. "I was admitted into hospital and I told the doctors that I did not want to die from Aids. I refused to die." She said it was her family's support that helped her come to terms with her diagnosis, although she sometimes thinks about the people that shunned her. In 2009, Shabangu suffered another setback. Fear of death "One of my colleagues had tuberculosis, but he kept saying he was bewitched. “He said someone put muti in his tea, but I could see that these were the symptoms for HIV. I tried to tell him to get tested, but he just would not accept it and one day he died in my arms. He infected me with multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis. I lost so much weight. I could not even carry the firearm." She admitted herself to Stanger Hospital, where she stayed for 24 months. "I told the doctors I was HIV positive, have MDR-TB and I need to be admitted into hospital. I told them I did not want to die." Her fear of death kept her alive.
"One of my colleagues had tuberculosis, but he kept saying he was bewitched. He said someone put muti in his tea, but I could see that these were the symp toms for HIV. >> KwaDukuza woman tells her story through a quilt AMANDA KHOZA, NEWS24
20 July 2016
She was discharged from hospital after she was informed that her CD4 count had increased to 450 and the viral load had fallen to 2500. When she returned to work her colleagues did not want to work with her. No protection "But I told myself that I must not worry about them because they were dying like ants and I was the one who refused to die because there was treatment available." Her problems started in 2012, when she became jealous of all her husband's girlfriends and he refused to use protection during sex. On April 13, 2012, Shabangu's husband asked her to bring their car to his workplace. In his office she saw a framed photograph of him and one of his girlfriends. He denied the relationship when confronted about it. On her way out of her husband's office, she bumped into one of his colleagues. "The woman was so rude, she tried to slap me and I moved. Then she went for my gun and we both fought for it. Shots were fired and she ran away." One bullet In a fit of rage, Shabangu followed the colleague and fired several shots in her office. The woman was unhurt. While Shabangu was walking out of the building, she saw her husband running towards her. "I shot him with one bullet and he died instantly," she said. She could not imagine her husband leaving her for someone else after everything they had been through. "I am not angry at myself for what I did. No one else could take him away from me, even though he was having affairs with other women. “He never ever apologised for giving me HIV/Aids."

Story of our world today >> Terrorism continues to hold humanity captive, with one horrific attack after another
RANJENI MUNUSAMY
J
UST after midnight on Thursday, I received a message that there had been a terror attack in Nice, France. News of mass killings has become so commonplace in the world that sadly they no longer have the shock impact they should. I clicked onto my Twitter timeline and found it flooded with breaking news of another human tragedy unfolding. As I scrolled down, there was graphic footage taken by people at the scene — bodies strewn on the streets
and traumatised people screaming in horror. A truck had ploughed through a festive and unsuspecting crowd during Bastille Day celebrations in the French coastal city. By Friday morning, the confirmed death toll was 84. It is the story of the world today, where one horror incident after another terrifies the human race, only to be masked by something even more dreadful happening a few days later. Speaking at a memorial service recently for five police officers in Dallas, Texas, U.S. President Barack Obama called on Americans to “reject despair” as racial tensions mount across the country. The five policemen were shot by an African-American army veteran at a protest over the recent police shootings of African-Americans in Minnesota and Louisiana. Obama tried to soothe his nation,
A case of ethical reporting INGRID OELLERMANN
SEX offenders, especially those who prey on children, deserve nothing less than to be strung up by their “you know whats”. Have such indelicate thoughts ever crossed your mind? I would go so far as to say that almost all parents will relate to such sentiments. Society’s outrage and horror over sex crimes involving children is understandable and justified. These are inexcusable crimes perpetrated on the most vulnerable and defenceless members of the community and their consequences are huge. Abused children are known to often become future abusers and their experiences may haunt them and their future relationships forever. The truth of this was highlighted in 2014, in a case where a Richmond primary school teacher, Robin Radley, pleaded guilty after 20 years to having sexually abused two pupils who had finally found the courage to report his
crimes. Speaking to The Witness at the time, on condition of anonymity, the victims described the shame that had prevented them from speaking out earlier. One man said he finally “cracked” af-ter undergoing counselling but will carry the scars of his ordeal forever. The other went on to sexually molest two young girls himself and it was only when undergoing therapy as part of his court sentence that his secret was brought into the open. The public’s righteous indignation about incidents like this has led to calls for the media to “name and shame” sexual predators so that society can protect its offspring against such evil. Unfortunately, it is not that simple. There are two important considerations. Of paramount importance is the need to protect the victim from being identified and exposed to secondary trauma. One must also guard against any possibility of labelling an innocent person a sexual predator. In recent weeks, this type of offence
traumatised by unceasing incidents of mass shootings in recent years. “Another community torn apart, more hearts broken, more questions about what caused and what might prevent another such tragedy. “All of it has left us wounded and angry and hurt. This is — the deepest fault lines of our democracy have suddenly been exposed, perhaps even widened. And although we know that such divisions are not new, though they’ve surely been worse in even the recent past, that offers us little comfort,” Obama said. He captured what happens across the world as terrorism continues to capture humanity. “We turn on the TV or surf the Internet, and we can watch positions harden and lines drawn and people retreat to their respective corners, and politicians calculate how to grab attention or avoid the fallout.
“We see all this, and it’s hard not to think sometimes that the centre won’t hold and that things might get worse.” In South Africa, we have mercifully not been the target of terror attacks, although incidents of criminal and political violence are unacceptably high. However, it came as a shock this week that police had arrested four people on terrorism-related charges. Two young men, twins BrandonLee and Tony-Lee Thulsie, were allegedly planning to join the Islamic State group in Syria, and are accused of wanting to bomb the U.S. embassy and Jewish facilities in the country. Two other siblings, Fatima and Ibrahim Mohammed Patel, were charged af-ter they were found in possession of a stun grenade and 20 rounds of live ammunition. It is not clear how the 23-year-old twins, who converted to Islam, became radicalised and why they might
want to perpetrate violence in South Africa. Around the world, there is a rising tide of violence and the will to cause human suffering. The struggles to assert racial and religious freedoms are being hijacked by extremists who believe that mass bloodshed could somehow further their causes. From suicide bombings in Turkey’s main airport to religious sites in Saudi Arabia, it is difficult to read sense into the Islamic State’s agenda and what it hopes to achieve. Similarly, excessive police force used against African-Americans and retaliatory attacks against white officers can hardly help to promote race relations in a divided society. • Ranjeni Munusamy is a political journalist and commentator for the Daily Maverick.• ranjeni.munusamy@gmail.com
has been very much in the public eye following the dramatic arrest, court appearance and bail application by a former guidance counsellor employed at a Pietermaritzburg primary school. The case sent shock waves through the local community and made headlines in The Witness, and has been reported on widely in online and print media. While a certain local publication chose to publish a photograph of the counsellor (in my view purely for sensational reasons), The Witness took a firm stance not to compromise on its ethical duty to protect the alleged victims in the case — young children between the ages of four years and 10 years. To ensure their anonymity, the name of the man accused of raping and sexually abusing at least four children at his former school has not been published in The Witness. The editor has further stipulated that the man’s name and that of the school may never be published if this is what it takes to protect the children. The same principle is routinely applied in all cases where a rapist or sexual offender is related to the victim and the publication of his or her name will inevitably reveal the
identity of the victim. It is, in any case, breaking the law to name an accused person in a sexual case before he or she has formally pleaded to the charge. Section 154 (2) (b) of the Criminal Procedure Act prohibits the publication of the name of an accused in a sexually related case before he or she has pleaded. Section 154 (5) makes it an offence to do so. The seriousness and heinous nature of the charges against the counsellor in this matter cannot be downplayed. Nor can the legitimate anguish and anger felt by parents and grandparents of the children who have reported abuse, allegedly at his hands. At the same time, however, the media and the public have a duty not to lose sight of the fact that in terms of our Constitution, every person (even an alleged child rapist) has the right to a fair trial and to be considered innocent until proven guilty. Cool heads are called for so that ultimately the truth will prevail. This applies too to the former colleagues of the counsellor. Parents and family members of pupils who have said they were abused by him were
outraged when a group of teachers attended the case and appeared to be openly siding with the counsellor. While loyalty to friends is an admirable trait, in a case as sensitive as this I venture to suggest that extreme circumspection is called for by all concerned. The teaching staff cannot know what evidence the police and prosecution have which led to the arrest of the counsellor and it would be wise for them to reserve their judgment, more especially as they are entrusted with the care of the very children who are the alleged victims in the matter. It should also be borne in mind that teachers are among a group of professional people for whom the reporting of suspected physical abuse, sexual abuse or neglect of children in their care is mandatory in terms of Section 110 of the Children’s Amendment Act. This is according to the South African Medical Journal website. The website states that the reporting (to child protection organisations, provincial Department of Social Development or the police) must be done “as soon as the suspicion is formed on reasonable grounds”.
sponsibility to change the world for the better. “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” — Nelson Mandela. The message behind Mandela Day is simple: if each one of us heeded the call to simply do good every day, we
would be living Mandela’s legacy and helping to build the country of our dreams. Mandela followed three rules throughout his life, which he did at great personal sacrifice: Free yourself. Free others. Serve every day. Media Desk Darul Ihsan Centre Durban
communication services manager Musa Mntambo reponds: Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife is aware of the difficulties in ob taining annual fishing permits. The issue of the shortage of annual recreational fishing permits is a post office and
Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (Daff) issue. Ezemvelo has, however, engaged with its Daff counter parts and advised them to pri oritise coastal regions over in land areas. Daff has indicated that it will distribute the nec essary forms shortly.
Live Mandela’s legacy and do good every day AMONG the best of actions are those that gladden the heart of human beings, feed the hungry, help the afflicted, lighten their sorrow and remove their suffering. Being of service to others is an integral part of humanity. All should be ac-
tively engaged in social welfare and in meeting the needs of the communities where they reside. An individual who is insensitive to the suffering of other human beings and is not inclined to serve the cause of humanity cannot be described as
Where are the annual fishing permits? IF you try purchasing an annual angling permit from the post office, you will be told that these permits are out of stock. The situation has remained like
this for the past few months. An annual angling permit costs in the region of R90, whereas a monthly permit costs R52 per month. My question is simple: is the gov-
good for humankind. We must always be ready to serve humankind and have love and kindness for all of God’s creation. Mandela Day was a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the ability and the re-
ernment now trying to exploit anglers by forcing them to purchase permits on a month-to-month basis? If not, can anglers be advised as to where the annual permits can be purchased?

East Coast Radio’s General Manager, Boni Mchunu, today launched #ECR67Scholars, an initiative aimed at making a sustainable, meaningful differ ence that lives beyond just Mandela Day. The sta tion is seeking to cover the school fees of 67 Grade 8 pupils right through to Grade 12.
N an effort to make an ongoing, meaningful difference that lives beyond Mandela Day, East Coast Radio has begun a province-wide search as part of its #ECR67Scholars initiative. The station has committed to paying the school fees of 67 Grade 8 pupils right through to Grade 12. The initiative is based on former President Nelson Mandela’s fervent belief that “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Launched on Monday morning, #ECR67Scholars is the brainchild of East Coast Radio’s general manager, Boni Mchunu, who is seeking a more sustainable offering that lives beyond just Mandela Day. “That means we are making a difference not just today, but every day,” explains Mchunu. “Education is the tool to success not only for individuals but in terms of the future of our country. I am a firm believer in the importance of education and the importance of encouraging our children to complete matric. #ECR67Scholars does its bit to make sure Madiba’s legacy lives on.” In addition to harnessing Madiba’s passion for children and education, #ECR67Scholars also taps into the “building communities for good” ethos of East Coast Radio’s parent company, Kagiso Media. The station has called on Grade 8 pupils from around KwaZulu-Natal to submit their motivations on www.ecr.co.za for a chance to be among 67 pupils selected for a scholarship programme. Entries close on 31 July.
