Weekend chaos consumes Blythedale Beach JYOTHI LALDAS

A

MAN was stabbed and left for dead on Blythedale Beach early on Saturday morning, following a night of chaos and gridlocked roads in the area which continued into the weekend. Emergency services were unable to reach the man in time due to numerous taxis parked on the road completely blocking off all entrance and exit points. According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Dylan Meyrick emergency crew were also threatened by “out of control” revellers and were forced to withdraw. They were unable to recover the body, which was on the beach unattended for many hours. KZN SAPS spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed the murder “No arrests have been made. Investigations are continuing and the motive for the killing is still unknown.” Thousands of revellers converged at the first car park in Blythedale on Friday evening. According to Blythedale residents, who are up in arms over the “absolute

chaos”, trash lined the streets, loud music rang out until all hours and rowdy revellers showed no regard for the beach, the environment or the residents. They say scenes of obscenity including drunken brawling, illegal drug use and sexual acts could be seen from their homes. “We could not leave our homes,” said a resident who asked to remain anonymous. “It was sheer chaos. The people had no regard for anyone. They destroyed the roads, the car park and the beach and were not bothered even by authority. It was frightening to watch.” Residents say, this is an annual problem they have experienced for the past few years and are appealing to law enforcement to assist. “These people come here and create havoc for a few days and leave, but we live here all year long and we take care of this place. There is nothing wrong with wanting to come to the beach and have a good time, but doing this with no concern for anyone or anything is just not right. Some kind of rule or law has to be put in place to control the situa-

tion. People are dying because of this errant behaviour, how can we accept that,” said another resident. Residents anticipate more chaos as the Christmas weekend approaches. Responding to the appeals, Gwala has said more police have since been sent out to the beaches in an effort to reduce if not curb entirely the issues being experienced. The KwaDukuza Municipality has also implemented measures to assist with safety and security. The municipality has increased the number of traffic officers, tourist monitors, points persons and security staff in all areas. They have also identified parking areas specifically allocated for light motor vehicle and public transport, in an effort to relieve the severe congestion being experienced. In addition, vehicle check points will be held to address unroadworthy vehicles, driver compliance and consumption of alcohol in public areas. Anyone with information about the stabbing incident is urged to contact the KwaDukuza SAPS on 032 551 8200 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

It is believed that the group had been attending a Christmas year-end function where alcohol was consumed, said Dhlomo. He said the argument escalated and the group, as well as more revellers, began attacking staff at the clinic. Fortunately, said Dhlomo, security officers who were passing by stopped and tried to defuse the situation and the police were called to the scene. He said two health workers sus-

Water situation for festive season JYOTHI LALDAS UMGENI Water’s largest system which sup plies water to an estimated four million con sumers in uMgungundlovu District, Pieter maritzburg and much of Durban remains under stress as the drought continues its firm grip on KwaZuluNatal. According to Shami Harichunder, Umge ni Water Corporate Stakeholder manager, 30% water restrictions have been imple mented in Maphumulo, iLembe District, as a result of the town’s main source of raw wa ter, Imvutshane River, having dried up. Water is being transferred from Hlimbi thwa River into Imvutshane River through an emergency scheme for supply to and treatment at Maphumulo Water Treatment Plant. In the remaining two systems of Umgeni Water, Middle South Coast and Hazelmere, all water restrictions have been lifted fol lowing good rains in August, September, Oc tober and November. “In the Hazelmere system, potable wa ter production at Hazelmere Water Treat ment Plant has returned to predrought lev els, meaning there is adequate water to meet eThekwini Metro’s full demand for supply to Verulam, Waterloo, Sea Tides and La Mercy, and iLembe’s requirements for supply to Ballito, Umhlali and parts of Ndwedwe. Restrictions were lifted after Ha zelmere Dam began filling rapidly because of good rainfall,” said Harichunder. The dam is currently at 68%, an increase of 42% from November 2015. From mid 2014 to June 2016 the supply area of Hazel mere Dam was in a state of drought which necessitated the introduction of 40% wa ter restrictions.

Three suspects who were seen to have led the attack were arrested and appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Monday. They were remanded in custody and will appear again on 28 December. “Several charges are being formulated against the three including assault; intimidation as well as malicious damage to property‚” the KZN health department said in a statement. trate with a story of his own. He and the farmer’s daughter meet and marry, and transform Hazara into a model estate, but a political showdown is looming and their future seems increasingly uncertain. Written by John Conyngham, author of the award-winning novel The Arrowing of the Cane and a former editor of The Witness in Pietermaritzburg, Hazara tells the story not only of the sugarfarming world but also the history of Natal and Zululand, and captures a way of life before it fades into the past. Described by Graham Linscott as ‘beautifully written’ and a ‘worthy piece of Africana’, Hazara’s first hardback edition has sold out but it has been republished in paperback by Shuter & Shooter in Pietermaritzburg and is available from leading bookstores. - Supplied.

NEW book throws light on KwaZulu-Natal’s sugar-farming world and its history. Hazara: Elegy for an African Farm tells the story of a farm, and its surrounding community, in the KearsneyDoringkop area of KwaDukuza. The story begins in the 1920s when a young couple settle inland from KwaDukuza and name their home Hazara, after the husband’s former regiment in the British Indian Army. Like other farmers, they socialise with neighbours and have visitors to stay in their house with its view eastwards to the Indian Ocean. Then, after a chain of fateful occurrences, into this isolated world, with its horse riding and games of tennis, there arrives a teenage girl from England. February 2017 Following months of refurbishment, the Durban Art Gallery reopens to the public on 11 December, with a new exhibition through out all gallery spaces, entitled Beyond Bina ries. Beyond Binaries is a curated exhibition featuring work by 26 artists. The exhibition aims to open up discussion on the current climate of polarization and intolerance, and the increasing trend towards fixed, essen tialised identities. Beyond Binaries features works with video, photography, paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, wire and mixed media works on show. South African born artists are comple mented by their peers born in African coun tries as well as artists born in India, China and Germany. DAG is open seven days a week: Monday to Saturday from 8.30am until 3.45pm, and Sundays from 11am until 3.45pm. Entry is free and all are welcome. For more info, contact the Gallery on 031

311 2264 or 9 or email: Jabu.Mngweng we@durban.gov.za (weekdays). The show includes a short Christmas decoration making work shop to clear the cobwebs of creativity. Show Running time: 60 minutes, a short break and then a workshop. Suitable for kids aged three to 300. Snacks and juices are on sale. Hot Dogs on sale between shows if you are booked for both shows on the same day.
