Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

TAXI owner, who is a member of the KwaMaphumulo Taxi Association, Sibusiso Sithole (42) – whose last name is also known as Sokhela – was fatally gunned down last Wednesday evening on Townview Road. KZN SAPS spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage and that no arrests have been made as yet. “We cannot confirm whether the incident is related to taxi violence or not since the matter is still under investigation,” he said. However, according to a statement issued by the minister of KZN Department of Transport Willies Mchunu the case is now being investigated by the Police Taxi Violence Task team. A well-placed source said that after the deadly attack police officers found a vehicle that had been set alight on the R74 which is the same make as the one believed to have been used by the alleged shooters when fleeing the scene. DRIEFONTEIN residents took to the streets on Monday morning blockading the road with trees and burning tyres making the area inaccessible, said Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Vinny Pillay. He said an estimated 50 individuals took part in Monday’s protest action, but no one was arrested and no property was damaged. Monday’s protest action comes after residents in the area protested last week apparently over service delivery, the Ward councillor vacating his position and their dissatisfac-

tion with the ANC’s process of nominating candidates to stand for elections. It is believed this week’s protest was mainly caused by the latter. Last week protesters allegedly set the community hall alight and a number of them were arrested for violence. ANC Greater KwaDukuza Region spokesperson Lucky Makhathini said the party’s Regional Executive Committee (REC) met with protesters on Monday, 25 April, afternoon. He said this meeting comes after the REC met with the Drienfontein’s Branch Executive Committee (BEC) last week regarding the protest action that

ensued then. Makhathini said the main issue raised by protesters this week Monday was that they are not satisfied that the process for nominating candidates to contest local elections was followed accordingly. He said the party’s regional leadership will consider issues raised by the BEC last week and those raised this past Monday by the protesters and decide on the best way to resolve the matter. On Tuesday morning there were no reports of protest action in the area.

WADUKUZA Mayor Ricardo Mthembu last Wednesday promised Etete community members that work on the housing project, which was the cause of a three-day long protest, would commence on 23 May 2016. MAKHOSANDILE ZULU MANDENI mayor Siphesihle Zulu announced last Wednesday at an IDP meeting that several developments which are ongoing and new projects will soon commence in Ndulinde, Ward 6. Zulu said the Sikhonyane Housing Project is nearing completion as only 15 more houses need to be constructed to bring the total to 1000. He assured community members who did not receive houses that phase two of the project would commence soon. He urged the community to take part in sporting activities once the renovations on the Vutha Sports Field have been completed. “The Department of Transport is also striving to ensure that both the renovation of Vutha Bridge and the completion of road construction which was launched by the MEC for Transport and Community Safety Willies Mchunu is being considered as the first priority adding that an amount of R11 million is being allocated for such a project,” he said. Zulu further announced that there are a number of electrification projects underway in the area with some being carried out by Eskom. He said the number of people on the community works programme in the area would increase from 26 to 50. The mayor also handed over a sewing machine and block making machine to small businesses operating in Ward 6.

munity, he said. He explained that sanitation was the reason the project had been delayed since 2013, which is a matter handled by the district municipality, and the local municipality had met with iLembe District and requested to

continue with the housing project. Residents had also demanded that speed humps be constructed in the area. Mthembu said KwaDukuza Municipality cannot assist with this request because the R102 is a provincial road,

but, he said, a letter had been written to the Department of Transport regarding this matter. Ward 7 councillor Gideon Mthembu said the houses to be constructed once the project commences in May would have Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) toilets. The mayor urged residents to be calm, restrained and tolerant as a date has been set as to when the project would begin. “We hope that the community would observe restraint until the contractor comes on site on 23 May 2016 and the first brick is laid as a reaffirmation of our promise. During this period, we will be finalising all the necessary processes in preparation for the commencement of the project,” said Mthembu.

RATE Shakaville residents, according to a protester, protested from Monday until Thursday demanding to be employed on government construction projects in the area. The protester, who asked to remain anonymous, claimed that during protest action on Thursday, a 23-year-old female was shot and wounded on the thigh. He said the injured person was rushed to the hospital, adding that traffic and police officials had fired shots at protesters. The source said protesters are demanding that locals, rather than people from eThembeni, should be employed on the construction of the community hall and the renovation of RDP houses in the area. “We want to be addressed by the mayor,” said the source, “because we tried to talk to our ward councillor, but she told us people from D section are not her people.” KwaDukuza SAPS spokesperson, warrant officer Johannes Khoza said a case of public violence was opened with the police however no arrests had been made. It is believed that rubber bullets were used by the KwaDukuza Municipality Crime Prevention Unit to disperse the rioters and that the

ceive the report of the outcomes.” The source said a public meeting that was set to take place on Saturday which was meant to be attended by the ward councillor was postponed for Wednesday, 27 April.

tor. Doctors are seeing a lot of cases of bronchitis at family practices, and though most cases are caused by the common cold virus or influenza virus, bronchitis can lead to more serious conditions, such as pneumonia, which require medical treatment. Symptoms of bronchitis - a serious disorder of the lower respiratory tract - include fever, chills, chest congestion and a productive cough that lasts more than five days. However, if the cough lasts two to three weeks, and there are more serious symptoms, such as chest pain, shortness of breath and wheezing, it could be an indicator of an even more serious condition and you should see a healthcare provider. Many people assume when they are diagnosed with bronchitis that they need an antibiotic. However, bronchitis is commonly caused by a virus so antibiotics would not be helpful to patients. Treatment includes rest, fluids, a humidifier, fever and pain relievers and cough medication. If breathing problems are severe, it’s best for the person to be evaluated in an emergency room. - Health24

GLAUCOMA is a disease in which the optic nerve is damaged by high pressure inside the eye. Anyone can have glaucoma and is most common after the age of 40. It sometimes is hereditary, so family members of glaucoma patients should be examined. Vision loss as a result of glaucoma cannot be recovered, but early diagnosis and treatment can prevent further vision loss. Usually no symptoms are present, so it can only be diagnosed by a full examination. How is Glaucoma detected? Here at Tongaat Eye Centre we

LAUNCH NOW OPEN TO THE PUBLIC THE NEW TOYOTA FORTUNER A LUXURIOUS BRIDGE BETWEEN URBANITY AND FREEDOM

We all want and love freedom, or at least the idea of it. But what exactly is freedom? In short, it’s whatever we want it to be – enjoying life without inhibitions. It’s the ability to go anywhere you like, whenever you want. That’s the true luxury of freedom – and this is embodied in the new Toyota Fortuner.

The origins of the Fortuner are interesting. It dates back as far as 1984, when a midsize SUV called the Hilux Surf was introduced and sold to selected markets, including Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Two decades later, a much more refined design with similar underpinnings to the Hilux Surf was introduced as the Toyota Fortuner to more than 110 markets in 2005. The first-generation Fortuner was launched in 2006 in South Africa and soon became the SUV of choice for bush and urban lifestyle enthusiasts alike.

“The new Fortuner has a long, wider stance versus the outgoing model, and its capabilities to adapt into every environment like a chameleon have been reinforced,” says Calvyn Hamman, sales and marketing Senior Vice president of Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM). “It can transform seamlessly from a sophisticated urban warrior to a fierce bush conqueror.” TSAM has also ensured there’s sufficient infrastructural expertise in the country to support the new Fortuner.

“As a brand that prides itself on Quality, Durability and Reliability (QDR), we ensured that staff at dealerships throughout the country had undergone technical and service training to reinforce Toyota’s unrivalled aftersales experience,” Hamman adds. “We also went to great lengths to ensure that pricing for parts, accessories and servicing for the Fortuner is competitive – if not the best.” The peace of mind that the new Fortuner offers is

reflected in the following elements that distinguish its positioning in the competitive midsize SUV market:
