A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). OLPHIN Coast Taxi Association public relations officer Mduduzi Tony was shot and succumbed to his wounds at the Alberlito Hospital on Friday evening in Nkobongo, Shakaskraal. Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Vinny Pillay said the police received a call at around 8:50pm on Friday about a shooting in the area. He said Tony was in his vehicle when unknown gunmen opened fire during a drive-by shooting. However, the Umhlali SAPS Task Team and reservists found an abandoned vehicle on Saturday morning in the Tinley Manor area which matches the description given by witnesses of the shooting, Pillay said. “The blue, black BMW 323i was found with empty cartridges inside. The vehicle was stolen in March in Mayville during a house robbery,” Pillay said. He said no arrests have been made at this stage and the KZN SAPS Taxi Task Team is investigating the matter.

Tony’s fatal shooting follows recent taxi-related killings within iLembe District which include Dolphin Coast Taxi Association’s secretary Dan Maharaj, members of the Maphumulo Taxi Association Sibusiso Sokhela, Nkosingiphile Maphumulo and Mboneni Mnyandu as well as deputy chairperson of the KwaDukuza/Stanger Taxi Association Bongizwe Mhlongo. Meanwhile, KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety, and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda has strongly condemned the killing. Kaunda said suspects involved in the killing of the above-mentioned taxi operators have either been sentenced or are awaiting trial and sentencing. He said the police assured him and members of the taxi industry that the suspects in Tony’s killing will be brought to book speedily as the police are following key leads. In the wake of Tony’s killing, Kaunda called an urgent meeting with the provincial and regional leadership of the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), the Dolphin Coast Taxi Association, SAPS and officials from the

Departments of Transport, and Community Safety and Liaison on Saturday. Members of the taxi industry expressed their shock and condemnation of the killing of Tony, whom they described as an advocate for peace and stability within the industry. SANTACO’s provincial chairperson Boy Zondi urged members of the Dolphin Coast Taxi Association to assist the police, but at the same time allow them to conduct their investigation without interfering. “We have worked very hard to attain broad peace and stability in the taxi industry, we can’t fail now,” Zondi said. Kaunda said the taxi industry within this district has been relatively stable since the arrest in 2015 of those suspected to be involved in taxi violence. Earlier this year, Sizwe Ngubane (35) was found guilty of four counts of murder and eight attempted murder cases and was handed down 140 years imprisonment. Ngubane was sentenced for killing taxi operators and security guards during an ambush on the R74 in January 2015. He was arrested later on the same day of the incident. “The recent killings threaten to destabilise our industry. We are saddened by Mr. Tony’s killing, and on behalf of the government, we wish to convey our condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues in the taxi industry. But we are also encouraged by the fact that the police are following leads towards a speedy arrest of the perpetrators of this crime. We will work hard to ensure that we do not regress,” Kaunda said.

Mayor supports rollout of government bursaries MAKHOSANDILE ZULU KWADUKUZA mayor Ricardo Mthembu has encouraged local Grade 12 pupils to work hard so as to obtain the required grades to advance their academic careers. “KwaDukuza Municipality has partnered with the department of Water and Sanitation to [offer] opportunities that will advance the standard of education in rural communities and shape future leaders”, said Mthembu addressing Grade 11 and 12 pupils during his visit with the Department of Water and Sanitation at Nonhlevu High School. The department is offering bursary opportunity to Grade 11 and 12 pupils who wish to pursue careers in the science industry and so far it has visited four local schools that have been adopted by KwaDukuza Municipality which are Nonhlevu Secondary School in Groutville, Chief Albert Luthuli High School in Ntshawini, Tshelenkosi Secondary School in Shakaville and Shekembula Secondary School in Doringkop. Mthembu and KwaDukuza executive committee Sduduzo Gumede took turns in addressing four local schools on career opportunities. The bursaries are offered to less privileged Grade 11 and 12 pupils who are willing to pursue studies at higher education institutions.

MAKHOSANDILE ZULU SCHOOL teacher Ntobeko Nkosi (36) appeared in the Kranskop Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 22 July, for allegedly killing two women in the area. Nkosi was refused bail and the matter was remanded to 17 August 2016 for a formal bail application, KZN SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said. The accused allegedly had a relationship with one of the victims, Ndukwende Secondary School pupil Khethiwe Xulu (25) whom he fathered a two-year-old child with, media reports stated. According to Zwane, the suspect was visiting his girlfriend Khethiwe who was with her mother Ncamisile Xulu (50) at their home in the Ekwazini area in Kranskop, on 7 July 2016. “It is alleged that the suspect shot and killed his girlfriend and her mother after an argument ensued. “The suspect then fled the scene after the incident,” Zwane said. He said Nkosi was arrested the following day in KwaDukuza and upon further investigation, police recovered a 9mm pistol in the Inanda area in Durban, which is believed to have been used to kill the two women. The firearm will be sent for ballistic testing, Zwane said. KZN MEC for Education Mthandeni Dlungwane condemned this incident when he visited the family of the victims last week, media reports stated. Dlungwane said it is unfortunate that community members turn a blind eye to the issue of teachers having sexual relationships with pupils.

Hospice receives land >> Dolphin Coast Hospice to build incare facility

I

N-PATIENT palliative care will soon be a reality for the KwaDukuza community. This comes after the Dolphin Coast Hospice Association officially received land to build their facility from the KwaDukuza Municipality on Thursday last week. KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu together the with hospice chairperson Krish Venketsamy and board members participated in the sod turning to officially commence the project. Speaking at the event, Mthembu said people should not be deprived because of their background. “We have seen the work done by the Dolphin Coast Hospice and we are touched by the time and effort put in by the volunteers. It is also our duty as government to help where we can and we are here today to help. “When you started this hospice I am sure you did not imagine you would be here today. But here we are planning to build a facility for the terminally ill patients of our town. Congratulations. I assure you our working relationship will continue.” Venketsamy thanks the mayor and KwaDukuza Municipality for their as-

ills such as substance and drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, crime, and rape. “Men must play a role in ensuring that all victims of rape are not afraid of reporting their cases to the police. Secondly, we, as men, must remember that real men do not rape. A real man takes care of his family and has one sexual partner,” Zulu said. He encouraged men to lead a healthy lifestyle by sticking to a balanced diet and by taking care of their bodies through physical exercise and training. iLembe Department of Health assistant manager Bonie Ndlela said the programme seeks to eliminate misleading notions and beliefs on men’s health by initiating dialogues intended to provide accurate information. “Men must have engaging conversations on how to rebuild healthy family structures which would subsequently lead to healthier and more stable societies. “All this, we hope, will help reduce the level of violence in our communities,” Ndlela said. She said the programme is intended to ensure that men become active members of the community who positively impact on the younger generation. Zulu said Isibaya (kraal) – an enclosure for livestock – was culturally an area in which young men were taught moral values hence the programme was given this name – Isibaya sama-

Doda (loosely translated to an enclosure/gathering area for men). “In modern society, this practice has been abandoned and as a result, the young men of today grow up without any values,” Zulu said. He said young men without a father or a father figure would benefit immensely from this programme. “Gender-based violence, sexual assaults and crimes of a similar nature result from the fact that young men no longer receive cultural training from father figures,” Zulu said. The programme also raised awareness on sexual and reproductive health including HIV prevention, treatment, care and support, and the importance of male circumcision. Zulu said he will launch this programme in various municipalities throughout the province.

EREBRAL palsy is caused by abnormal development or damage to the parts of the brain that control movement, balance and posture. Often, symptoms include poor coordination, stiff muscles, weak muscles, and tremors. There may be problems with sensation, vision, hearing, swallowing and speaking. Often babies with cerebral palsy do not roll over, sit, crawl, or walk. This condition may sound horrific for an adult, but imagine a child experiencing it and going through the difficulties that is associated with it. The children at Inqolobane Home

True leadership RANJENI MUNUSAMY

W

E often moan about the lack of accountability in our society and the chronic failure of our leaders to take responsibility for their actions. Passing the buck and employing delaying tactics, including costly court actions, appear to be the default reactions of people in leadership positions when they are caught out being involved in wrongdoing. One only has to look at the wild goose chase embarked on by the chief operating officer of the SABC, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, to stay in his job and continue stripping the public broadcaster of credibility. President Jacob Zuma had mastered the art of dodging accountability until he was dragged to the Constitutional Court and forced to admit that he was wrong not to implement the public protector’s report on Nkandla. He now has to pay back the money for undue benefits. We do not expect much when it comes to people facing up to their failures. It was therefore a shocking and moving experience to watch a media briefing by the Trek4Mandela team on their return from Mount Kilimanjaro after the tragic death of racing car driver Gugu Zulu. Zulu died after experiencing difficulty breathing while he

and his wife Letshego were attempting to summit the mountain as part of a charity drive for the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The news of the death of the sports personality stunned the nation and left those who knew him in deep grief. When the Nelson Mandela Foundation announced that there would be a media briefing on the team’s return from Tanzania, it was expected that there would be tributes and expressions of condolence. What ensued, however, was unprecedented. The expedition leader, mountaineer Sibusiso Vilane, began with an emotional apology to the nation for not bringing the whole team back home.

dation CEO Sello Hatang, who had flown to Tanzania after hearing of Zulu’s death, told how he had roped the couple into participating in the expedition. “Little did he know that that was his final destination. To South Africa, I would like to say I’m really sorry that I didn’t bring Gugu Zulu back alive. At this very low moment for our country, this low moment for the Nelson Mandela Foundation and for Madiba’s legacy, we will say this is yet another mountain that we have to summit again,” an emotional Hatang said. Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula offered words of comfort, saying it had been a voluntary climb for a good cause and that nobody should feel blame. “Here before us, lies a story of goodwill that humanity and all races must follow. It is an inspirational story. It is tragic, but it will remain for us in history forever and forever.” Many people at the media briefing and watching the live broadcast were in tears as each member of the panel spoke. Zulu’s death at the prime of his life, leaving behind a wife and one-year-old baby, is painful and tragic. But it was also deeply moving to see Hatang and the team members respecting the nation enough to account for what happened, even though they themselves were griefstricken. Nobody had expected immediate and detailed answers but they felt it their responsibility to account to the nation. There could be no greater mark of true leadership. • Ranjeni Munusamy is a political journalist and commentator for the Daily Maverick. ranjeni.mu nusamy@gmail.com

At this very low moment for our country, this low moment for the Nelson Mandela Foun dation and for Madiba’s lega cy, we will say this is yet an other mountain that we have to summit again. “It was on Wednesday last week when I stood up and said to your fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters who had come to bid you farewell. that as the leader of the Trek4Mandela Caring4Girls Kilimanjaro expedition, my role is to make sure that I bring those you have come to say goodbye to back safely and alive. I am very disappointed to say I did not deliver on that promise,” Vilane said, breaking down in tears. Vilane and the team doctor Roxanne Schutte gave a run down of what had happened, describing Zulu’s condition at various stages of the trek until they decided that he should be brought down the mountain. The Nelson Mandela Foun-

Turks display maturity THE thousands of ordinary citizens who bravely opposed the coup and supported the democratically elected government in Turkey need to be commended for showing political maturity. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, due to his moral transformation and economic development of Turkey and his support for the Syrian refugees, has become a source of inspiration for many Muslims across the globe. Agreed, Erdogen has his faults like any human being

and more so being a politician. Like other politicians, his decisions are not above criticism or disapproval, but there was no need for a military coup. Erdogan blames Fethullah Gulen, a Turkish cleric who lives in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania, U.S., for orchestrating the attempted coup. Erdogan is demanding that the U.S. government extradite Gulen. It will be interesting to see if the U.S. accedes to this request. So far, the U.S. is demanding evidence that meets

the legal criteria for extradition. This scenario reminds me of Osama bin Laden and George W. Bush. After 9/11, Bush made a similar request to the Taliban. The Taliban refused to extradite Bin Laden without evidence resulting in the U.S. invasion and destruction of Afghanistan. American double standards and its fork tongued proclamations reduce its moral high ground to be the police of the world. To quote Noam Chomsky: “If the Nuremberg laws were applied, then every post-war American president would have been hanged.” MOHAMED SAEED

Career building classes helped the pupils gain some insight into different career fields and learning skills,” Gumede said. One of the pupils who attended the programme said she was grateful for the opportunity as it helped her gain knowledge and understanding of her

Gumede said the SAPPI – KwaDukuza Resource Centre would like to thank the tutors who sacrificed their time to ensure the programme was a success. “On behalf of the resource centre, we would like to thank the principals of the participating schools for attending, and the staff for putting this programme together as it will continue during October holidays,” he said.

A special thank you to the Principal, S.M.T, Staff, SGB and my learners of Stanger High School for their love, support and encouragement. Also, for making everyday a brighter day as I walked through the past 365 difficult and dark days.

Sally and Keiden will always be remembered by Family and Friends

In treasured memory of our beloved son

MARLON RAMA 06/04/1971 – 02/08/2009

In Loving Memory

Subramani Murugan (Siva) We will always love you, not just for who you were, but for what you have done for our lives and the values you have instilled in us. A light has gone from our home that was so bright. God has taken from us a shining life, but we will still treasure the wonderful memories you left behind. We lost a soul with a heart of gold, who was dearer to us than wealth untold. There’s an ache in our hearts that only time may heal. You have always protected us and touched our soul in so many ways. Despite our sadness we wish you love and peace as you journey into the unknown. You and your family are kindly invited to attend the 15 & 16 Day Memorial Ceremony of the late Subramani Murugan (Siva) Date: Friday, 29 July 2016 Time: 18:00 to 20:00pm Venue: D92 Capricon Street, Glenhills, Stanger Family and friends are kindly requested to please accept this as a personal invitation. Sadly missed by his wife Selvie, sons Sugen & Poovie, daughter-in-law Viloshnee, brother Gonseel and family & friends.

The Pather Family invites you to the Yearly Memorial Ceremony of

Who’s life tragically came to an end on 2 August 2009. Losing you was the saddest and hardest part of our lives. We often speak your name. All we have is memories and the picture in the frame. No one knows the heartache we face everyday. You are gone from our sight but never from memories. Marlon you will forever be loved and remembered in our hearts every day.

Sadly missed by family and friends.

Jayananda Joseph Pather

Date: Saturday, 30 July 2016 Time: 2pm-3pm Venue: A15 Glenhills Drive A limb has fallen from the family tree. I keep hearing a voice that says “grieve not for me”. Remember the best times, the laughter, the song. The good life I’ve lived, while I was strong. Continue my heritage, I’m counting on you. Keep smiling and surely the sun will shine through. My mind is at ease my soul is at rest. Remembering all, how I truly was blessed. Continue traditions, no matter how small. Go on with your life, don’t worry about falls. I miss you all dearly, so keep up your chin. Until the day comes we’re together again. Sadly missed by The Pather Family & a host of family and friends.

Doordie final battle WEEKLY REPORTER THE KwaDukuza Darts Association (KDDA) hosted a singles darts tourna ment at the Quarts Sportsbar on Wednesday night. The turnout was disappointing as few players entered the tournament. With just 12 players the game still went on. The top half of the draw saw Vasa Rungasamy beat Justin Naidoo 20, while Jodie Naidoo beat Jason Moodley 20 to book themselves to the quarters. Jerry Arunachellum beat Nine Pillay 21 to meet Rowen Pillay in the quarters. Rungasamy who was in prolific form wasted no time in defeating Naidoo 20 to advance to the semifinals while Aru nachellum beat Pillay 20 to meet Run gasamy in the top half. Arunachellum who had a good run was brought down by Rungasamy with 21 defeat, thus booking himself in the finals. The bottom half of the draw saw

Jerry Govender beat logan Moonsamy 20, while Len Naidoo beat Ajen Singh 20. Naidoo and Govender met each other in the quarters. Preolin Muthusa my lost to Charlie Pillay with a 20 de feat. Len Naidoo who was in top form demolished Govender with a 20 victory to meet Charlie Pillay in the semifinals. Naidoo wasted no time in defeating Pil lay who was struggling to score on the night. The final was a real do or die battle between Len Naidoo and Vasa Runga samy as both players were in top form. In the first set Rungasamy top scored and shocked Naidoo with a 120 close. Naidoo got his act together and levelled the scores 11. Rungasamy however kept his cool and beat Naidoo who was struggling to close on a double. The night belonged to Rungasamy, and Naidoo had to settle for the runner up post. Tonight (Wednesday) a singles tournament will be hosted, sponsored by Jaya's Recyclers. KDDA thanked Jaya for the generous sponsorship.
