extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.
Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime
continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our
own challenges this year, but as we enter 2015 we renew our pledge to you to do our very best to continue to be the most accurate, fair and balanced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

Millions budgets for infrastructure repairs >> Community outcry over burst water and sewerage pipes MAKHOSANDILE ZULU
T
HE community of KwaDukuza and surrounding areas have been calling for the district municipality to ensure that it carries out its responsibility for maintaining water and sanitation infrastructure and deliver on its commitments to communities. This appeal has been made continuously on social media and the Weekly has been inundated with telephone calls from residents, over a period of time, complaining about these ‘inhumane’ living conditions resulting from burst water pipes and sewers. According to some complainants, in some instances, the flowing water or human waste runs into yards, driveways, pavements, and roads. Some residents raised complaints about the municipality’s seemingly delayed response time and at times, complainants claim, failure to attend to such situations, which is alarming as this amounts to water wastage at a time of drought. An example of when communities were forced to endure human waste spewing from a blocked or burst sewage pipes or tanks into the open could be witnessed on Balcomb Street, in the KwaDukuza CBD, where the burst sewers overflowed right in front of businesses onto the pavement for several months. This, however, has since been attended to and fixed by the municipality. Communications manager for iLembe District Municipality Zee Nqala said when the municipality receives a complaint about burst or leaking water pipes and, or, sewers, the response time that the municipality has set is 48 hours after receiving a complaint regarding water and 24 hours for one concerning sewers. Nqala said: “Balcomb Street was responded to within 24 hours of receiving the call, but the issues were not resolved immediately because they were bigger than we anticipated. “The overflow at Balcomb was a result of sewer pipe blockage at a property along the railway line. “The access to the blockage was limited by the scrap yard dealer who had packed his scraps all over our servitude. “It took us some time to remove all the rubble including scraps that were in the pipeline, thereafter the pipe was accessed and repairs carried out. “The honey sucker was deployed on a daily basis in the area to remove the excess sewer that was overflowing in the area.” She said that water reticulation rehabilitation projects are being carried out in places such as Townview, the southern section of the Central Business District and Newtown, adding that some of these projects have al-

ZN MEC for Health Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo attended a community outreach programme last Friday in the Esidumbini area in Ndwedwe, iLembe District where he said religion could play a role in the efforts to reduce teen pregnancy and the rate of HIV infections in this province. Dhlomo said that his department will incorporate the message found in the Bible from the book of Timothy 1, verse 12 into its ‘anti-sugar-daddy’ (blesser) campaign. He said that though the Department of Health has done much to distribute HIV treatment and also to reduce the rate of new infections, it is concerning that according to statistics women aged between 15 and 25 are at
‘Girls must say no to blessers’ MEC higher risk of being infected and that this can partly be attributed to intergenerational sex. “As a government, we have come to accept that, as a matter of fact, young people do engage in unprotected sex. As a result of unprotected sex, they fall pregnant and get HIV and sexuallytransmitted infections, which remain high in this province at 57 per 1000 against the target of 35 per 1000. “We ask for assistance from par-
ents and society at large in the promotion of celibacy, adherence to one sexual partner and use of HIV prevention and family planning services that are available in the department,” he said. He called on young people to opt for abstinence to avoid being infected with HIV or falling pregnant. “You take a decision to say, ‘I will take off my clothes’ - you just can never say it was a mistake. You prepare yourself to go there [and have sex]. Let there be no one who will say they don’t know what happened when they fall pregnant. You make a conscious decision that these things are going to happen. It starts there. Therefore, it is up to you to ensure that does not happen,” he said. Dhlomo said that out of one million babies born countrywide each year, 8% (or 80 000) are delivered by teen mothers who, by sheer virtue of their age, are neither physiologically nor psychologically ready to bear children. He said that according to results of a study conducted by the centre for the

Aids Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA) female children appear to contract HIV much earlier than their male counterparts. He said that the study also found that almost all school going children are found to be HIV negative once they have completed Grade 7 except for a few cases of failed Prevention of Mother To Child (PMTC) HIV transmission. However, once the children progress to high school, the MEC said that seven to 10% of the female children completing Grade 12 test positive for HIV with their male counterparts testing negative. “This is because the girls are not sleeping with boys of the same age. “The irony of this situation is that when they enter university, 10% of the girls are HIV positive, but by the time they finish their Honours degree after four years, there is 25% HIV positivity among both young men and women, which means they have infected each other,” he said.
Dhlomo said the department has launched the Dual protection Campaigns which is targeting students at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Institutions of Higher Learning. “If we are to win the war against HIV and Aids, there needs to be behavioural change, particularly among the youth. Our message is that diseases must be prevented because prevention is better than cure. “Young people are therefore urged to abstain from sexual activity for as long as possible – or to apply for Dual Protection by using male or female condoms during every episode of sex while combining this with medical male circumcision. “We also strongly urge parents, guardians and young people themselves to opt for medical male circumcision since it has been found to reduce the risk of female-to-male sexual transmission of HIV by approximately 60%,” he said. The department also offered general health and eye care screening and medical male circumcision services, among others.

Sundumbili SAPS crime report MAKHOSANDILE ZULU THE Sundumbili SAPS made numerous arrests over the weekend which included two people who were arrested for being in possession of marijuana. The two paid a fine of R100 each. Another individual was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. The said individual paid R1 000 bail and is still waiting for blood sample results. Sundumbili SAPS communications officer, Captain Gideon Mthethwa said one person was arrested for the negligent loss of a firearm. “The culprit was remanded in custody by the Nyoni court,” he said. >> Community urged to empower themselves with education MAKHOSANDILE ZULU
S
CORES of Mandeni residents flocked to Ndulinde Library to witness the handover of computer certificates to students last Wednesday. The handover was attended by well-known author Dr Nakanjani Sibiya, Dr Thobile Sithole from the Department of Higher Learning, Mxolisi Biyela from the Department of Social Development, Zanele Nkosi from the Department of Arts and Culture, Mandeni deputy mayor Phindile Sishi, Mandeni Municipal Speaker Makhosazana Zungu, ward councillors, delegates from the Sikhonyane Traditional Council, principals and teachers from local schools. Sishi, started by paying tribute to late Kwaito star Mduduzi Tshabalala famously known as Mandoza who passed away recently. “For a person to prosper in life, edu-
Mandeni Municipality hands over certificates cation is the most fundamental equipment,” she said. She asked young people to avoid falling pregnant while in their teens as this could be a hindrance to their personal growth. Sishi announced that the Mandeni Municipality has consulted with the MEC for Arts and Culture regarding the construction of public library in ward 16 at iSithebe. Speaking on behalf of the Department of Education, Dr Thobile Sithole said: “Some of us had lost their lives, loved ones, joy and families fighting for liberty, but today the gates of learning are open for all, we can become anything we want, we can be teachers, doctors, nurses, lawyers only if we strive for the betterment of our lives and this can be achieved through education.” She added that education is essential, however young people should be grounded and centred on religious teachings. Sithle urged the elderly to attend Adult Basic Education Training class-
es as this would empower them. From the Department of Social Development delegate, Mxolisi Biyela said that the department has initiated behavioural change programmes
which allow the youth to have dialogue issues topical to them. “We also have youth camps where youth hold discussions about social ills like rape, drug-abuse and unemploy-
ment,” he said. He said that the department also started a youth academy which assists young people to obtain six months short skills courses.

Stanger Khidmat Retirement Village fundraiser JYOTHI LALDAS THE Stanger Khidmat Organisation is urging the community to support their fund-raising dinner on Saturday, 1 October at the MusjidE-Munawwar Hall in North Street commencing at 6.15pm. The event is being held to develop KwaDukuza's first integrated precinct, specialising in care of the elderly and is open to elderly of all cultural and religious backgrounds. Guest speakers will include international consultant in education and human development Edris Khamissa and Gift of the Givers volunteer medical doctor Mohammed Vahed. Guests will be treated to a fourcourse meal. According to their vision, Stang-
er Khidmat Organisation aims to create a caring environment that allows people to live in accordance with their beliefs. Their main goal is to ensure suitable care for ageing persons living in KwaDukuza and the iLembe District. “We believe it is every individual’s responsibility to care for ill or ageing parents and relatives, and we will always promote inter-family care as the first option. “However, recognising that this is not always possible, it is our obligation to offer care and social interaction through our Khidmat Village as the next best alternative,” said chairperson Fameeda Hoosen. For tickets contact Isra on 076 878 6923, Taslima on 082 921 4514 or Amrisha on 084 549 5572.

IF there are two people who epitomise the state of the public service, they are Dudu Myeni and Hlaudi Motsoeneng. Myeni, chairperson of the South African Airways (SAA) board, is testament to the fact that political connections trump competence. Myeni has presided over a disastrous term at the national carrier, with interim financial statements presented at Parliament this week showing a loss of R5,6 billion. This is close to R1 billion more than the airline was expected to lose in 2014/15. Despite Myeni’s dreadful record, she was retained as chairperson of the newly appointed board as a “compromise”. The question that must be asked is who was the compromise with? It is no secret that Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, who is responsible for the political oversight of SAA, wanted Myeni gone from the time he was reappointed. There was also tension between Myeni and the former minister Nhlanhla Nene, which is believed to have been a contributing factor to his axing in December 2015. So who is it that was so determined to retain Myeni that there had to be a “compromise”? It is not only Myeni who enjoys special protection from an undeclared

supposed to account for the performance of the airline. She told the committee she had been unwell but it is clear that she also does not take parliamentary accountability seriously. In response to questions about the airline’s appalling financial results under her leadership and whether it would not be in the best interests of SAA for her to resign, Myeni was indifferent. “I did not appoint myself. It was a Cabinet decision,” she said. Motsoeneng has been equally cavalier after the SCA decision rendered his position invalid. Speaking at the funeral of Kwaito star Mandoza, Motsoeneng tastelessly used the platform to blow his own trumpet. “You cannot decide for my future, I will decide. If I leave the SABC it will not be the first time. Hlaudi is stress-free.” It is not clear what the future holds for these two people and the other incompetents who contaminate the public service. Myeni is supposed to leave SAA after a year, but who knows whether her special political protection might result in an extended stay, or perhaps another high-flying post she is unworthy of. Motsoeneng, for now, remains at the SABC as an “ordinary employee”, as if it is a voluntary club that he can remain a member of. These two people personify the state of incompetence and lack of accountability in government. And chillingly, their power is derived from a hotline to the highest office. • Ranjeni Munusamy is a political journalist and commentator for the Daily Maverick. ranjeni.munusamy@gmail.com
source. Motsoeneng has turned the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) into his personal fiefdom despite a report by the public protector and court judgments finding him unqualified for his position and guilty of maladministration for inflating his salary and that of other SABC executives. Like Myeni, Motsoeneng had a disastrous reign at the SABC, including rubbishing the credibility of the public broadcaster through his absurd editorial policies. He also used the resources of the SABC to finance a cult-like following and commissioned a choir to sing praise songs about him. This week, the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in Bloemfontein rejected Motsoeneng’s bid to appeal against an earlier court ruling that found his appointment as chief operating officer should be set aside. This leaves Motsoeneng with no more legal options, as he clearly has no grounds to take the matter to the Constitutional Court. While both Myeni and Motsoeneng have been exposed as incompetent and unworthy, they remain conceited, believing they are entitled to their highflying jobs. Myeni arrived late for the finance committee meeting in Parliament this week, where she was

What is Purtassi? Purtassi is the term referred to the period mid September to Mid October observed- by some Hindus as a time of prayer and self discipline. This entails a month long fast- abstaining from ‘worldly pleasures’. Within the period of Purtassi, Saturdays are observed as the day for prayer. Purtassi, is considered to be a time of self discipline and physical and spiritual cleansing for mind and body. During the month of Purtassi, a vegetarian diet is followed. Meaning of Purtassi The period of Puratssi is essentially a period of devotion to the Hindu God Lord Vishnu (the preserver). Why are Saturdays significant during Purtassi? The significance of Saturdays in this period is that the earth is free from the influence of the planet Saturn. Purtassi food Purtassi food includes a vege-
tarian diet, excluding meat, in some cases it also excludes the use of salt, ginger and garlic, and shop bought bread, cakes and confectionary as well as alcohol. Purtassi rituals and prayer The period of Purtassi culminated in a prayer or ritual offering on the last Saturday or preceding Saturdays within the period of Purtassi. On this day of prayer the following foods are prepared; vegetable curries, rice, vada and gulgula, fruit, sweet rice, milk and mavilakku (rice lamp). Known as 'Fasting Prayers' in South Africa, this prayer is performed in the afternoon. Apart from food, significant rituals includes drawing the Nama Katti (pronounced Namo) on the foreheads of all present. The Nama is a drawing with a white chalk like liquid to form a V then a red line down the centre on the foreheads of men and children. A red dot is made for woman. -Food Like Amma Use To Make It

Ballito friends conquer Kili >> “It is the climb. one thing to Waiting to greet us at Madecide to climb a chame gate were 33 porters and two cooks. Everything was mountain, it is quite weighed and recorded and then, off we set, ambling upanother to be on top of wards through a magnificent forA rt it,” Herbe est. Before long, the sun had set and we were in the dark, making our Simon I OWN a bright orange suitcase which was unmistakeable on the runway among the rest of our gear, as we taxied off on the last leg of our inbound journey to Kilimanjaro. We were finally on the way, but our luggage evidently, was not. Not the most auspicious of starts to an epic adventure. Earlier in the day, a delayed flight out of Johannesburg had started us off on the wrong foot and now 11 tired and stressed adventurers stared in disbelief at the receding suitcases. Precision Air, as it turns out, was anything but and what followed was like an episode of Faulty Towers. We arrived in Tanzania to intense heat and the promise of a majestic mountain in the distance. Then it dawned on us with a certain amount of trepidation that we were going to walk to the top of that awesome monolith. An aeroplane flew overhead and the realisation that we could reach out and almost touch it from the top of the mountain did little to settle our nerves. Waiting to greet us was Simon the driver. From his reaction to the news of our missing gear, we deduced that this was standard practice. An hour later we had checked into a hotel called “Springland”, an establishment not unlike The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. We soon met up with our head guide, Juma, a slight fellow with a rolling accent and a calm disposition. This was just as well as morale was low and we had seven near hysterical women wailing for their bags. The alternative plan was to hire equipment from the hotel and share what little toiletries we had between us, but old kit and very used sleeping bags was cold comfort compared to the top of the range gear we had all acquired for the trip… and we were not amused. Luckily the new day saw some of the men in our group heading back to the airport and they returned triumphant with the lost luggage. We were off – a few hours later than planned, but we were at last on the way to the start of
way towards the first night’s camp by torchlight and the sliver of a moon peeping through the forest canopy. Black Colobus monkeys rustled in the trees and we saw a little civet dart across the path in front of us. The mood was upbeat and the promise of a warm sleeping bag and hot meal spurred us on. Daybreak brought the realisation that we had walked 11km the day before, most of it in the dark and al-
long-drop ablutions is something not many will forget. Some conquered their fear of heights, but scaling up the Baranco Wall unaided – others settled into extreme camping for the first time, and more still found solace in nature and the unspoiled stark beauty that the mountain offered. Finally after days of winding our way upwards towards the sun, we assembled in Barfu - snow hut in Swahili – camp, an unremarkable strip of land 7km from the Summit. We were told to dress and get some sleep, not an easy feat at 3pm in the afternoon. The wind started howling and I leaped out of my sleeping bag to put on another layer of windproof gear. I looked like the Michelin man, four layers of clothing, two sets of gloves, a fleece hat and a thermal scarf. At 10pm they came to wake us, but believe me, none of us was really able to sleep. Your nerves are so unsettled that you could be forgiven for thinking that you are at the start of the 400m sprint at the Olympics with the world watching. The guides did the last check, made sure we were suited up correctly and that our glasses were clean, our noses did not run and we had our backpacks on the right way. They wiped our brows, dabbed our noses with tissues and tucked our shirts into our pants and away we went. We had a pecking order and had to shout out our numbers every now and again to ensure everyone was still okay. Juma took the lead and set the pace and Allen, another guide, brought up the rear. He carried our emergency oxygen and some coffee for halfway. Two lesser guides appeared from nowhere on summit day and brought up the flank. They both had head torches and would tap us on the shoulders every now and again to check our response and look into our eyes. The summit was 1,300m up over a distance of 7km. It took us 10 hours. You put one foot in front of the other and just keep going. The wind was howling, no one was talking. As you looked up to the top of the mountain you could see the hundreds of little headlamps from other groups of climbers ahead of you. Climbers passed us and sped upwards, only to be found sitting next to the trail a few meters higher, some in tears as you slowly passed them again…the mountain cannot be
Each day brought new challen ges, the higher we went the thinner the air got and the worse the headaches. Scenery started to change and eventual ly you could be forgiven for thinking you were on the moon. though we felt strong, you could feel the stress on the legs and little aches and pains appeared from nowhere. The next stage of the journey was up towards Shiva camp and it soon became evident that some were going to feel the altitude more than others. Already some in the group felt nauseous and others had headaches so bad they were in tears. We walked each day until we could go no more, stopping only to have a drink of water before pressing on. When we did rest for a long time, we could be reassured that we were still very far from camp. Our guides would assure us that we were always just “10 minutes” from our next stop – which meant anything from 15 and 160 minutes. I think if they had really told us the truth, some of us would have just sat down and refused to go any further. Each day brought new challenges, the higher we went the thinner the air got and the worse the headaches. Scenery started to change and eventually you could be forgiven for thinking you were on the moon. The nights were freezing and a trip to the dreaded
rushed, you have to do it “pole pole” (slowly slowly). Eventually the stars gave way to daybreak, a thin sliver of burnt orange light announced the arrival of the new day as we stepped up to Stella point at the top of the mountain. By now we were exhausted. Already the place was choked with the walking wounded - groups that had summited ahead of you and were now starting to make their way down. People were crying from pain and relief, others were being dragged off the mountain, disorientated, exhausted, some with broken limbs, some bleeding from the mouth. Guides and porters have their hands full trying to steady the ship and get everyone down as soon as possible. But ahead of us was yet another challenge. Stella Point is only the top of the mountain, not the highest point, and we set off on one of the longest journeys of my life for the final victory. This was where you separate the men from the boys. Those last 200meters is what Kilimanjaro is made

of. Finally, after what seemed like hours of torture, we reached Uhuru. It is here you break down and cry, from relief and gratitude and the realisation that you are one of the very few people on this earth who will ever have the privilege of stepping up to such greatness. dren to go back to school. And while they’re learning and taking part in sports, they’ll also be facing the risk of catching an infectious disease. Here are five of the most common diseases, as well as an image to identify each one: Lice Head lice are tiny insects that feed on blood from the scalp. They are about the size of a sesame seed and are easily spotted, although they hide when exposed to light. If your child complains of an itchy head, there’s a good change they might have
picked lice up at school. Lice can’t jump or fly, but crawl from head to head. Activities such as putting heads together to share secrets, and playing games or sport increase the child’s risk. Chicken pox Chicken pox is highly contagious, but luckily you will soon notice if your child has the disease. It usually starts with a sudden fever and random small spots and blisters. It spreads through saliva and blisters on the skin and outbreaks are more common in winter and early spring. Pinworms Your child can become infected with pinworms by unintentionally ingesting (or inhaling) their eggs. Pinworms infest the intestines and lay eggs around the anus. A strong itching of the anal area, a rash around the anus and the presence of pinworm or pinworm stool around your child’s anus are symptoms of the disease.
pinworm Conjunctivitis Better known as “pink eye”, conjunctivitis is a disease that causes an inflammation or infection of the membrane (conjunctiva) that lines the eyelid. An itchy, red and irritated eye is usually a sign of its presence, and children often wake up with the eye sealed shut with a yellow crust. It’s highly contagious and is spread through hand to eye contact. Any school sport, physical activity or even just touching carry the risk of contracting conjunctivitis. Strep throat Strep throat is caused by infection with the streptococcal bacterium and causes inflammation and swelling at the back of the throat and tonsils. A cough or congestion is usually not present. It is a common among children in close contact with each other and can be dangerous if left untreated. - Health24

Five things that are damaging your skin right now WRINKLES, early ageing and scarring are just some of the things that can go wrong when you expose your skin to these elements and products. Here’s a list of the top things that you should keep from to make sure that your skin stays radiant and healthy. Chlorine Enjoy a dip in the gym’s indoor pool? The chemicals used in pool cleaning products such as chlorine dry and age your skin. Chlorine clings to your skin even after a good shower. Using a loofa with a good foaming soap can help get rid of those harmful chemicals. Sleeping with your make-up on Naughty, naughty! This is one of the many reasons why many women find themselves with unexplainable rash and pimple break out. Make-up generally clogs your pores and this leads to acne. The smudges on your pillow collect a lot of bacteria which also puts you at risk of contracting bacterial infections. Hair products Just like make-up, hair products clog your pores, but what makes them much worse is that they contain chemicals that can easily dry and damage your skin. Be careful not to use too much hair moisturiser if you are going to wear your hair loose and in your face. Popping pimples If you are constant pimple popper than I suggest you get rid of that nasty habit fast. Not only does it create scarring on the pimple area but it pushes back the bacteria deeper into your skin. And this is one of the reasons that you

are more likely to develop another pimple on the same area. Salts and spices Consuming foods with lots of salts and spices can cause water retention in the skin. This will generally give you very dry and tight skin. Cutting down on your spicy foods can benefit your skin in the long run. - Women24
LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. LASER THERAPY is becoming increasing popular as an alternate pain management technique and for the promotion of diabetic wound healing. What is it? LASER therapy makes use of intense
beams of light that are focused onto the treatment area to reduce pain and promote healing. It does so by accelerating inflamed tissue recovery, promoting cell regeneration and circulation for the purpose of eliminating pain. It is a non-invasive technique, i.e. it does not break the skin. We are now offering LASER therapy for the treatment of: *Diabetic wounds/ulcers - improved healing and closure *Neck and back pain *Arthritis and joint pain *Muscle strains and ligament sprains *Reducing the appearance of scars (surgical or otherwise) *Reducing the appearance of stretch marks, wrinkles and cellulite. Records tumble at 2016 Rhino Peak Challenge
R
ORY Scheffer and Holly Page celebrated World Rhino Day on Thursday by overcoming treacherous conditions and wind gusts of over 100 kilometres per hour to shatter the records for the Rhino Peak Challenge, setting new male and female Fastest Known Times (FKTs) for the 21km journey from Gooderson Drakensberg Gardens to the top of the iconic Rhino Peak and back. As part of global World Rhino Day celebrations, the second edition of the novel Southern Drakensberg assignment seeks to raise awareness and funds for the fight against the plight of both the Rhino and the Bearded Vulture – an endangered inhabitant of the Maloti Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site that played host to the event. As Scheffer and Lucky Miya met each other stride for stride for the majority of the encounter, the pair unknowingly spurred each other to both soar past the previous FKT of 2h45 by eleven minutes, with Scheffer’s late charge earning him the day’s line honours and the new FKT crown. “This was definitely the shortest races I’ve

done in the Berg but one of the tougher ones,” explained Scheffer. “The sheer altitude gain in the first ten kilometres was something quite different and the wind played a big part in things too.” “It was a howling wind up the top that most people here had never experienced before and definitely played a big part in making the Rhino Peak Challenge tougher and slower than expected. “It was beautiful though and definitely one of my favourite events, especially as the vibe here at the Rhino Peak Challenge is also quite unique. “Yes we’re all here to go as quick as we can so that we can raise as much money as we can but everyone is a lot more relaxed than normal and the social side of things was great. “None of us were really here to outdo each other and the fact that the FKT record was there to be broken was an incentive to push for a faster time in order for us to raise more money, not to try break the record as such. “The organisation of the event was also top notch and I think the event is just going to keep getting better and better,” he added. After a group of twelve influential people started the challenge at 7am, Scheffer and Miya – joined by eight other top male and female trail runners from throughout South Africa and abroad – followed at 9am and remarkably completed the combined ascent and descent in just two hours and thirty four minutes. >> ystem Support s to make d is designe daily the commute
Volvo is now semiautonomous T
HE Volvo XC90, which is the reigning WesBank / SAGMJ Car of the Year in South Africa, has been updated for 2017. Pilot Assist, fitted as standard for semi-autonomous driving, and PowerPulse diesel technology, for a lag-free diesel driving experience, are both now available in South Africa. Pilot Assist now standard on all models In accordance with the forthcoming Volvo S90, the XC90 now features the latest version of Volvo’s Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving technology as standard on all models. Able to take control of acceleration, braking and steering at speeds up to 130 km/h, the support system is designed to make the daily commute – or indeed a longer
journey – more relaxing and enjoyable. The all-new XC90 pioneered the original Pilot Assist system which could be activated at speeds up to 50 km/h – making the typical South African traffic jam an absolute breeze and allowing the driver to relax behind the wheel while enjoying the Swedish luxury and Scandinavian simplicity of Volvo’s flagship SUV. With the latest upgrade, a lead vehicle is no-longer required, and the XC90 is able to maintain safe semi-autonomous driving provided that lane markings are clearly visible on both sides of the vehicle, at speeds up to 130 km/h. Important to note is that Pilot Assist is an outright support system and has not been designed for the driv-

er to remove their attention from the task of driving. Fully-autonomous Volvos, which will allow for complete hands-off and feet-off autonomous driving, will be available in the future – the first examples of which will be driven by real customers in Gothenburg, Sweden, as part of Volvo’s Drive Me programme, in 2017. The inclusion of Pilot Assist as standard means that all XC90 models now also come standard with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which uses radar to manage acceleration and braking in a more conventional manner, without steering control. PowerPulse diesel technology eliminates turbo lag Introduced globally on the forth-
coming Volvo S90 and now also available for 2017 in the XC90 D5 AWD is Volvo’s world-first PowerPulse technology. Geared to eliminate the effects of turbo lag, PowerPulse turns the Drive-E D5 diesel engine into a lag-free, smoother powerhouse. Volvo Cars is the only car maker using such technology in production vehicles. PowerPulse draws air from the air filter via a compressor into a pressurised two-litre tank. When required, the compressed air is fed by a valve into the exhaust manifold to instantly spool up the turbo. The tank automatically refills after each burst, and the compressed air remains on hand at all times to provide extra boost – on pullaway and during low-speed driving. Naturally with such an upgrade, output has been increased and efficiency has been improved. Power has increased to 173 kW at 4 000 rpm (up from 165 kW) and torque is up by 10 Nm to 480 Nm between 1 750 and 2 250 rpm. Efficiency remains exceptional, with average fuel economy on the combined cycle now 5.7-litres per 100 km (down from 5.8) and carbon emissions now even lower, at 149 g/ km (down from 152). “These two new technological additions to the XC90 range will further boost its value and driver enjoyment,” comments Volvo Car South Africa MD, Greg Maruszewski. “Pilot Assist really makes those long highway drives far more enjoyable, especially when you find yourself in a traffic jam. And, with PowerPulse, the XC90 D5 is even better than it was before – a difficult feat to achieve.” Model year 2017 Volvo XC90s are readily available across the Volvo Cars dealer network in South Africa.

Enhancements sharpen new Lexus THE stylish 1.8litre Hybrid powered Lexus CT200h hatch receives an infu sion of flair, with the availability of four new distinctive bitone (twotone) col our schemes. Using the perfectly pro portioned lines of the luxury hatchback as a base, the bitone colour scheme adds a dash of visual drama. The bitone scheme is created by combining high gloss black treatment on the roof and pillars, with a choice of four stylish ‘body colours’ adorning the metal below the ‘waistline’. Customers can choose between White Quartz, Son ic Titanium, Mercury Grey and Morello Red to create a look that matches their personality. Monotone traditionalists are also catered for, with the addition of the striking hue aptly named Amber, radiat ing rich bronze tones, which replaces the previously offered earthy Fire Agate. Audiophiles will appreciate the new ly added digital media holder housed in the centre console, which provides se cure storage for portable music devices and easy interface via the builtin USB, AUX and Bluetooth systems. Following the launch of the fourth generation RX SUV earlier this year, the top of the range RX450h SE’s luxury cre dentials are further bolstered. The spec ification changes mainly centre on en hanced convenience. Rear seat passengers will appreciate the addition of electric adjustment for the 2nd row seats, whilst the inclusion of seat heaters, now ensures that all oc cupants are kept warm and toasty. Befitting its status, the Lexus SUV flagship inher its a number of safety and technological upgrades. At the forefront of the upgrades, is the addition of a PreCrash electronic safety system.
