A number of reasons to celebrate

See See inside inside for for this this week’s week’s edition edition of of Stanger Stanger Weekly Weekly MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Have a safe and blessed festive season

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

own challenges this year, but as we enter 2015 we renew our pledge to you to do our very best to continue to be the most accurate, fair and balanced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

Mba said she could not disclose the details of the injury to the Weekly due to hospital policy. However, the parents are now aware of what caused the bone to break. Mba added that during the meeting Magwaza indicated that he was not aware of the appointment date that was for 30 June because he was not present at that time.

“He said he now understands what happened and if they had taken the child back to hospital they would have picked up the infection. He also understands why the bone came away as he initially thought it was because the finger had a fracture and the staff failed to see that. He said he now sees this as a misunderstanding on their part,” Mba said. Magwaza was advised to bring the child back to hospital if they had any concerns. “We always encourage our patients to come back to hospital at any time when they are having problems or they don’t get better,” Mba said. Magwaza said the child has an appointment at the hospital scheduled for 1 September.

DUDUZO Gumede was inaugurated as the iLembe District Municipality mayor last Thursday, 25 August at an inaugural district council sitting at Sayabuza Sports Field in KwaMaphumulo. Dolly Shandu was re-elected deputy mayor and Lucky Makhathini was appointed speaker during the inauguration of 32 of the district’s councillors. Makhathini urged councillors to treat each other as equals and shed their differing political viewpoints when serving on council with the purpose of working as a collective for the interest of the community. He said working with the previous speaker, Thokozani Msweli, and outgoing KwaDukuza Municipality speaker, Thulani Khuluse offered him valuable lessons which he believes will help him perform his duties appropriately. He wished the outgoing district mayor Welcome Mdabe well and commended him for the maturity he displayed when accepting that his term of office had come to an end, adding that other leaders can learn from this. Gumede vowed to deliver on promises made by the ANC Greater KwaDukuza Region during campaigning ahead of this year’s local government elections.

“We, here today, are recommitting ourselves to the priorities we [spoke about] during the election campaign,” he said. He said these priorities had been gathered from communities and include accelerating the roll-out of water and sanitation in rural communities, upgrading and replacing aging infrastructure, improving revenue collection; engaging communities about tariffs, in particular the sewerage tariff. “We also pledge to make effective use of our development agency iLembe Enterprise to stimulate the local economy,” Gumede said. He added that the newly sworn in council is committed to strengthening relations with traditional leaders as well as with the community. “As a community of the iLembe District we pride ourselves very much on the fact that we are a municipality built on the good deeds and legacy of heroes from this district. “This is why this municipality is known as iLembe. “This is paying homage to the king from KwaDukuza, the unifier of the Zulu nation who had the vision of bringing people together. “It is therefore, important for us as councillors to learn from this and work hand-in-hand and put aside the fact

MAKHOSANDILE ZULU A LOCAL nonprofit organisation Exose Community Development is running a campaign that helps future university stu dents from poor backgrounds to get regis tration fees. Bongiwe Mbuyisa, a member of this organisation, said the campaign is called Live Your Dream and was launched in Au gust.

JABULA HARDWARE

She said the organisation will depend on donations and sponsors from govern ment departments, the municipality, busi ness people and community leaders to help acquire funds. The organisation is visiting schools in and around KwaDukuza to inform Grade 12 pupils about this initiative so that those who could make use of such funds take advantage of such an oppor tunity.

Mthoko Msweli, also a member of the organisation, said pupils who wish to be assisted through this initiative would have to fill out an application form, which would include their recent results as this will be one of the criteria used to deter mine whether a pupil should be a benefi ciary. “It is very sad to realise that some young people cannot further their studies because of a lack of funds, even when they qualify for university,” said an other organisation member, Zama Masan go. Msweli added that such an initiative would also help to fill the gap in instan ces where students have been awarded a bursary or financial aid from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, but still need to pay registration fees. “As members of this organisation, we are asking from the bottom of our hearts that anyone who can assist with dona tions must do so,” Mbuyisa said. Business people or members of the community who wish to assist this organi sation must contact Mthoko Msweli on 083 780 1387 or email exosecommunityde velopment@gmail.com For more information, contact Phathabakhe Shezi on 072 887 3647.

Gumede also undertook to eradicate poverty by creating employment opportunities, especially for the youth. “We have noted that the young people from this district are desperately in need of jobs,” he said. Jehovah Witnesses focus on loyalty for 2016 conventions ON Friday, 20 May Jehovah’s Witnesses started hosting their 2016 “Remain Loyal to Jehovah!” regional conventions in the United States and around the world. In KwaZuluNatal over 35 000 dele gates of Jehovah’s Witnesses, including their families and neighbours of all races, are expected to attend the threeday convention at the Moses Mabhida Stadium from 9 to 11 September. The programme will be delivered in English, Zulu and sign language simulta neously. The threeday programme will feature 49 presentations, each exploring the theme “loyalty”. Additionally, the Witnesses have pre pared 35 video segments specifically for the programme, plus two short films that will be shown on Saturday and Sun day. Each day, the morning and afternoon sessions will be introduced by music vid eos recorded for the convention. As they have in years past, the Witness es will distribute a special invitation start ing on 18 August to the public welcoming them to attend the programme. The event is free and no collections are taken. Trevor Lee, programme overseer for Durban convention says: “We believe that loyalty is an essential part of any healthy

relationship. “Our convention this year features content that will help people develop stronger bonds with friends, family mem bers and, above all, with God. “We are confident that all who attend will enjoy this programme.”

AVING launched his career six years ago, the enigmatic and charismatic Karou Charou is one of the most commercially successful and recognisable brands on the SA comedy circuit. The power of his brand was recognised by the international franchise of McDonalds who handpicked him to be the face of their spicy burger marketing campaign, which saw his image splashed on TV screens and billboards across the country. Karou has over 20 000 followers on social media locally and internationally. He also featured in Botswana and Zimbabwe. His YouTube videos have over 100 000 views and he has just released his very own rap music track and video. His latest show Festival of Karou will see the ‘turbaned one’ attempt something never been done before by any comedian in South Africa. He will perform three different full length shows on three consecutive days at the same venue with completely different scripts, props, costumes, music, lighting, etc, which is physically, mentally and technically challenging. The festival takes place at Sibaya’s Izulu Theatre from 9 to 11 September. Kama Sutra 1 will feature on Friday 9 September and the sequel Kama Sutra 2 will feature on Saturday 10 September. Both shows are for adults only. The family show Hot & Spicy will feature on Sunday 11 September at 3pm. This show will also be recorded for Karou’s second official DVD release. Tickets are R100 per person and are available at Computicket, Shoprite and Checkers. Limited early-bird tickets are available at R80. Children under 10 and senior citizens pay R80 for the Sunday family show. For more details, call 083 660 1424 or email info@boxofficesa.com - Supplied.

Honey can reduce the harmful side effects of smoking

Add honey to diet to reduce effects of smoking. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

A

LMOST all smokers are aware of the health risks their habit poses, yet they struggle to kick

the habit. New research suggests supplementing with wild honey could reduce the toxic effects of smoking.

Smoking plays a role in many serious health issues: stroke, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular disease, coronary artery disease, to name but a few. And, despite having access to different kinds of smoking alternatives, many smokers remain loyal to traditional cigarettes. In light of this, research is looking deeper into the use of natural products to help smokers limit the damage they’re doing to their health. A recent study in Toxicological and Environmental Chemistry, Syaheedah et al. sought to find what impact the antioxidants in honey has on the oxidative stress in smokers. Smoking and oxidative stress Smoking introduces free radicals into the body resulting in oxidative stress, decreased antioxidant status and negative health impacts. Honey supplementation has been effective in reducing the toxic effects of cigarette smoke in rats, yet prior to this study the effects of honey supplementation in chronic smokers was yet to be documented. Can Tualang honey reduce harmful side effects of smoking? Tualang honey is 100% organic

At the end of the 12 weeks, smokers, who were supplemented with honey were found to have greatly improved antioxidant status. This strongly suggests that, due to its antioxidant and strong free radical “scavenging” properties, honey can reduce oxidative stress. Syaheedah says: “Our findings suggest that honey can be used as a supplement among those who are exposed to radicals in cigarette smoke, either as active or passive smokers, and so protect or reduce the risk of having cardiovascular diseases.” Health24 asked Dr Mahaneem Mohamed if other types of honey could have a similar effect, and he responded that smokers can supplement with other types of honey, as long as the honey is pure. He says wild honey from many countries have been shown to have similar antioxidant properties. Organic or wild honey, that is un heat-treated, is readily available from retailers and health shops around the country. Tualang honey is available from the Tualang honey store. - Health24.

honey straight from the wild rainforest honey from Malaysia. The Giant Honey Bees (Apis dorsata) hang their honey combs from the branches of the Tualang Tree (Koompassia excelsa) to collect pollen and nectar from the surrounding rainforest. This wild honey (not from a bee farm), is collected by workers risking their life climbing on very high Tualang trees that can grow up to 85 meters tall. Honey contains minerals, proteins, organic acids and antioxidants. Malaysian researchers Wan Syaheedah Wan Ghazali and Mahaneem Mohamed, et al. set out to determine the effects of Tualang honey on smokers after a 12-week supplementation on a group of 32 chronic smokers with two equal-sized control groups; one that was not supplemented and a group of non-smokers. They found oxidant activity in the smokers, likely caused by the free radicals in cigarettes. Oxidant activity can damage cell structure and function, leading to a host of health problems for the individual.

Are you getting enough calcium? CALCIUM is an impor tant part of our diet but it can be difficult to tell if you’re getting enough from your diet and to know which foods you should be eating. Here are six questions to ask yourself. Calcium is vital for bone health, assisting in bone deposition, there by preventing osteopo rosis. It also plays a role in other bodily functions such as nerve transmis sion and muscle con traction. • How much calcium do I need? Most South Africans only manage to con sume 500–600mg/day, meaning that we are falling short of our rec ommended daily intake for calcium. • Do I need to take a calcium supplement? Consuming calcium rich foods is the best way to meet your calcium re quirements. Only when you are unable to get sufficient calcium from your diet, should you consider supplementing to make up the differ ence. Milk and dairy prod ucts are a convenient source of bonehealthy vitamins and minerals (calcium, phosphorous and vitamin D). Calcium is, however, also found in other food sources. Health24.

In Loving Memory

what’s on

When God looked down upon earth, he saw someone similar to him. Someone who had the strength and the courage to take on the burdens of the world. Someone who could change people’s hearts, bring families together and provide for those in need. He saw you and on that fateful morning, he took you home to rest. Whilst the heavens rejoice having a great soul, we on earth miss you and will always cherish your memories. For years are memories that adds light into our lives and inspires us to live each day through our hearts. You were someone who took time to think of other people’s needs, your warmth touched so many hearts with gentle words and thoughtful deeds. Your simplicity and sincerity added something very special to every person, and all those who loved you. You always shared, gave help and cared. You were someone dearly loved and very special. Sadly missed by Pretha, Nikisha and a host of family and friends.

Bodybuilding flag lifted in Mandeni MAKHOSANDILE ZULU

S

ANDILE Sibiya, a bodybuilder from Mandeni, took part in the International Federation of Bodybuilding KZN Provincials competition in Durban recently. Sibiya secured fourth place qualifying to go through to the next round which will be the SA Bodybuilding Championships from 2 September to 4 September in Durban. He says he is living his dream by training youngsters to become bodybuilders. “I’m very passionate about training people. We formed a team called the Mandeni Bodybuilding Team, which comprises eight members. We are still recruiting because we wish to teach more people about

bodybuilding.” He said his teammates also participated in two competitions earlier this year, which makes him proud as the team’s coach and head trainer. Sibiya got involved with bodybuilding at the age of 11 saying that getting rid of his “lean” body was one of the reasons he took up the sport. “Another thing that led to me becoming a body builder was that my neighbour used to lift weights and I would look through his magazines. He had tons of Flex magazine and I would look through them and eventually fell in love with the sport,” he said. He currently uses the Sundumbili SAPS gym to train five to six days every week for two hours each

morning. Sibiya says to become a bodybuilder one has to be passionate about the sport, and be in love with it. He said commitment and discipline are the key traits to possess if one wishes to master the sport. “You have to treat your body right - no alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs - you have to treat your body like God’s temple,” said Sibiya. Sibiya thanks his sponsor, the owner of IPSS, Dylan Meyrick. “I just want to thank him and his family for all they have done for me. I really appreciate it and wish God will bless them abundantly,” he said. Sibiya will take part in a national bodybuilding competition and says he is ready to lift Mandeni’s name at the event.

LOCAL mixed martial arts practitioner Ntokozo Blessing Mgwaba has been invited to fight in a bout with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor, he said. Mgwaba said this fight would be part of his world tour which will be his swan song before he ventures into

martial arts entertainment in the movie in dustry. “My tour should start before the end of this year. We are still planning as to when my fight with McGregor should be but it will be held in Las Vegas and will be worth an estimated $50 million. “All I need is sponsorship for this tour and I am appealing to anyone who can help to please come forward,” Mgwaba said.

Welcome Spring!

Expect hot spring SA Weather Service r, dam levels are low >> Despite heavy rain in autumn and winte

HIS spring is likely to be hotter than normal, with a low likelihood of heavy rain, the SA Weather Service (Saws) said on Monday. “Perhaps we will see ourselves breaking records,” general manager of operations Mnikeli Ndabambi told reporters in Pretoria. This is despite the fact that South Africa is moving towards a La Niña weather system, which is characterised by wet and cool weather. While there was a low probability of this, it could mean better rains at the beginning of the summer, but not in spring. South Africa was still experiencing the drought, the result of a sequence of drier-than-normal preceding years, combined with the 2015

T

El Niño weather system. This was characterised by dry spells and extreme heat. In June, Co-operative Governance Minister Des van Rooyen declared eight drought-stricken provinces disaster areas. Despite some heavy rains during autumn and winter, South Africa still had a long way to go before recovering from the drought, Ndabambi said. It would depend on the rainfall and temperatures over the coming spring and summer. Dam levels across the country are shockingly low and continuing to drop. This was a serious problem, Ndabambi said. While the rain in autumn helped a bit, the country needed “signifi-

cant rain” to recover from the drought. The Saws could not provide any confirmation of the expected weather conditions for spring due to the conditions over the Indian Ocean, which were not conducive to making accurate rainfall predictions. Last year, the Saws was able to predict the drought with a great deal of confidence, due to the El Niño system over the country at the time. “Last year, we went through spring and summer knowing what to expect. Now we are almost uncertain what we are going to get.” Residents, business and government departments in inland provinces were urged to conserve more water. - News24.
