t’s really eye opening to step away from your daily routine and participate in a function that includes people just like us in our local association - only from all over the country. Builders and Associates are rebuilding their lives and businesses and returning stronger, wiser and more determined. As survivors, we must recreate a foundation for this newly restored industry. The mortar for this foundation is the understanding that we are much stronger working together. Our Association is working this year to build on the success of the past year. We are grateful to Tom Hall, Windsor Homes for being a solid leader in this effort. This year’s Board of Directors will be continuing those efforts. Some of the goals and priorities we have set include: 1. Continue our Strategic Planning Initiative. We want to build a plan to position us five years from now and an understanding of how to get there. 2. Rebuild our membership. The economy has cost us up to a third of our members over the past eight years. If every member could only bring in one Builder or Associate that is not currently a member, our future will be secure. 3. Continue to grow our Young Professionals Group. These young adults are the future leaders of our Association and they must be engaged and prepared. 4. Develop a Hispanic Outreach. Evaluate ways to better serve this population of our membership. 5.

Marketing & Brand Awareness. Create an effort to market and build awareness of our organization to the public. Consumers needs to understand the benefits of working with a professional builder/remodeler. Chuck-in-a truck’s must be exposed!!!

6. Do Business with a Member. If your current subs aren’t members, recruit them. If your builder customer is not a member, recruit them. We have recruitment aids and lists of reasons why companies should join. If you aren’t comfortable asking, talk to an Ambassador, Board Member or just call Jerry Cowan. We have assembled a Board of Directors and volunteer leaders that can help us achieve these goals. Over the past few years, we have achieved much through our legislative advocacy efforts at the local, state and national levels that have removed many impediments. Buyers are back in the market and activity has improved. Let’s take advantage of these better conditions and re-energize our industry. As members, we ask you to participate in our events and join us as we celebrate the successes. Remember, energy and enthusiasm are infectious! Hope to see you at our February 25 membership meeting!

J

oin us as we kick off the spring housing market with the annual Parade of Homes. The Parade is a win-win for everyone involved…builders, associates and consumers. Builder participation helps not only promote your company, getting in front of prospective buyers...it also helps your suppliers and trade contractors gain name recognition as a valued and trusted industry resource. Information on each Parade home remains on the GBA website and Parade of Homes mobile app for six months, providing continued exposure and marketing benefits for your company. It serves as an added resource for consumers looking to find a builder and/or remodeler. Existing homes, newly constructed homes and homes that are near completion and safe for the consumer to walk through can be entered in the Spring Parade of Homes. Unfinished homes must adhere to the established guidelines with emphasis on the homes being safe for the general public to enter. Last chance to enter the Spring Parade of Homes is February 26. If you don’t have a home under construction to enter for the Spring Parade…consider exploring other ways to promote your company in the Parade of Homes magazine. With 10,000 copies printed and distributed, this is a great way to promote your business to area consumers.

Certified Aging-in-Place Earn the Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation locally. There are two specific CAPS courses – Marketing & Communications Strategies for Aging and Accessibility and Design/Build Solutions - along with the Business Management course required to achieve this national designation. If you already hold another NAHB designation, you do not need to take the Business Management course. The Remodelers Council will again be offering these courses quarterly in 2016. Scheduled dates are: February 10-12; May 18-20; August 10-12; November 16-18. Registration information can be found on the GBA website. Discounts are available when taking multiple courses. If you are interested in taking either of these classes, notify Michelle Harris at the GBA office (336) 8556255 or email her at mharris@greensborobuilders.org.

NCHBA Member Rebate Program Since the Member Rebate Program (MRP) has been offered as a free member benefit of the North Carolina Home Builders Association, it has given participating members a total of $223,447.00. With 196 members participating in the program, that is an average of $1,140.04 going to each builder and remodeler member! GBA members have received a total of $24,299 in rebates. NCHBA’s Member Rebate Program lets builders and remodelers receive cash rebates for using certain manufacturers’ products in the building and remodeling of homes. There are currently 51 participating manufacturers covering 35+ different product categories. Once you are registered, you are eligible to claim on a quarterly basis. Any home, remodeling project, or multi-family unit completed from October — December 2015 is eligible to be submitted by February 19, 2016. The claiming process is just as simple as registering. An address is ready to be submitted once it is completed. MRP will ask for your company name, the completed address, and the completion date(s). You then provide all of the information required for each manufacturer used. The information required by most manufacturers typically include: quantity used, subcontractor or supplier name, and model number. No receipts are needed! Once a project is completed and the form is filled out, all you have to do is send it in. MRP will process your quarterly information, send it to the manufacturers, and issue you one lump-sum check for all of your rebates! Nationwide, more than 70% of the builders and remodelers who participated last year have received in rebates more than they paid in annual dues to their HBA. Get the most of your membership by taking advantage of this free member benefit. Register Today: http://www.hbarebates.com/nchba.html

2015 Year-In-Review As we reflect on this past year, we continued to see growth within our industry and Association. New initiatives were launched as well as milestones achieved. Below are just a few highlights from 2015. Thanks to everyone for your involvement and participation. Networking & Marketing Membership meetings; spring and fall Skeet and Golf tournaments; Associates EXPO; along with council and committee meetings provided networking and marketing opportunities for members to connect with other members. In addition, the GBA website and event publications provide additional marketing opportunities targeted to both members and consumers. Young Professionals Group We formed a task force of young professionals who planned events throughout the year to engage younger industry members. From after-hours networking socials, to educational programs, to Family Fun Night, to playing in a Kick-Ball tournament, this group provided an opportunity to grow the involvement of our younger professionals…and everyone had fun doing it!

Education GBA Remodelers, Builders, Triad Sales & Marketing and Triad Green Building Councils provided a variety of educational programs for GBA members including NAHB designation classes. We offered the Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) courses quarterly… with plans to do so again in 2016 due to growing interest. We also offered the Certified New Homes Specialist course. This allows GBA members to take national courses locally, avoiding travel expenses. Consumer Home Tours With our Parade of Homes ( Spring and Fall ) and Tour of Remodeled Homes, along with the Southern Ideal Home Show we provided consumers quarterly opportunities to meet industry members; showcasing the latest in new construction, professional remodeling and industry products and services.

Accessibility/Aging-in-Place Council With the growing demand and interest in universal design, accessibility and aging-in-place renovations and new construction, our AIP task force is in the process of developing a pilot program that will bring CAPS certified industry members together with health care professionals, forming a consortium for education, information sharing and networking…building greater awareness in our community.

Advocacy Through our local, state and national government affairs partners – TREBIC, NCHBA & NAHB – we continue to advocate for regulatory reforms that impact the building industry. NCHBA had one of its most successful legislative agendas resulting in numerous benefits and savings for our members. NC Build PAC Increased our member participation in contributions to NC Build PAC which help us support local and state candidates that understand and support the building and real estate industry.

Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat Working with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro, members of the Builders Association built 5 homes in 5 days the week of November 2-6. This brings the total homes constructed by our members to 55 since the formation of this partnership in 2003.

NCHBA Updates Top 10 Actions Benefitting Our Members in 2015 The North Carolina Home Builders Association (NCHBA) works diligently to protect the interests of the home building industry. Below are key highlights that summarize the most important work in 2015 that had the greatest benefit to our members. • Prohibited Aesthetic Controls in One and Two Family Dwellings • Exempted Builders’ Inventory from Property Taxation • Repealed Municipal Protest Petition Authority • Enacted Building Code Regulatory Reform Act • Enacted Favorable Land Development Law Changes • Fixed Disposal of Condensation Issues for High Efficiency Furnaces and Air Conditioning Units • Helped Pass Regulatory Reform Act of 2015 • Helped Pass Local Government Regulatory Reform Act • Established NCHBA Volume Builders Council • Created the Home Builders Education Fund, Inc. Additional information on each of these can be found on the GBA Website – Industry News and the NCHBA website.

Build Strong...Build PAC Contributions to NC BUILD-PAC are an investment in the future of your business and the building industry as a whole. It is essential that we are able to support candidates that understand and will fight for issues important to us. The Political Action Committee of the North Carolina Home Builders Association (NC BUILD-PAC) is a non-partisan committee organized for the specific purpose of raising funds to support pro-housing candidates of all parties at the state and local levels of government. Thirty percent of funds raised are used to support local city and county candidates. Candidates who receive support from NC BUILD-PAC know our critical issues and understand the depth of that support because it comes from thousands of builders and associates across the state. NC BUILD-PAC contributions are the key to our being able to promote a pro-housing agenda in the legislature and local governments statewide. We encourage all GBA members to make a contribution this year. Donations must be made from your personal account. Corporate checks are not allowed. Pledge forms can be found on the GBA website as well as the NCHBA website. Our local HBA number is # 3440. For additional information, contact Build PAC Chair: Jerry Cowan, Builders Mutual Insurance Company at 336-580-8494 or jcowan@ bmico.com.

Mark Your Calendars As you look for ways to get involved during the year, make sure you place the following major event dates on your calendar. Note that some dates are subject to change…therefore always check the GBA website, Facebook page and Member NEWS emails to stay abreast of these and other activities. Every GBA sponsored event provides an opportunity for networking and marketing. Utilize these opportunities to grow your business and name recognition within the industry.
