Why...You Ask?
O
ften I’m asked why I’m so passionate about our Association. As I tell people, we are ALL stronger when we work together to improve not only our own business, but our industry and community. In reflecting on my personal involvement…one of the many benefits has been the mentors, friends and colleagues I have come to know. As a relatively young builder getting into the industry, I had questions but wasn’t sure where to go to for the answers or who I could bounce ideas off. It only took one membership meeting and I got my answer…from the experienced builders, suppliers and trade contractors that I was able to talk with. Our Builders Association is a diverse organization…with all ages…and varied levels of industry background and experience. When we take time to participate…we get much more than our financial investment in return. I would like to challenge each of you to make it a priority to participate in some capacity between now and year-end…from attending a membership event, seminar, council meeting…to helping with our Raising Roofs community service project in November. So back to the initial question…Why Do I Participate? Marketing – From participating in the annual Parade of Homes, we gain increased name recognition and exposure which has proven to be valuable for our company, gaining pre-sales and remodeling contracts. Education – By attending seminars and council meetings, I always pick up at least one new idea to consider implementing within my company. I’m looking forward to the upcoming Social Media seminar on September 17 as we all need to determine how to effectively utilize social media to market our businesses…as we know our customers are using it daily. And to hear what Edsel Charles has to say about our regional housing market for 2014 and beyond on September 12. Advocacy – From attending the NCHBA Legislative Day and visiting with members of the Guilford County delegation, I have an even greater appreciation for the work that TREBIC does for our Association, working on our behalf for fair and reasonable regulations. We couldn’t do this alone…we are much stronger as an industry from these collaborative efforts.
STATE DIRECTORS Steve Monroe, SME & Associates Joan Swift, SwiftCreek Construction Phil Warrick, Piedmont Wholesale Eng Products
Networking – Not only do I get a chance to meet other members at membership events and make new business contacts…I have developed some of my closest friends. Our next membership meeting will be our Associates EXPO on September 12...this is a great event and one you need to attend this year.
NATIONAL DIRECTORS Scott Allred, Precept Construction Jerry Cowan, Builders Mutual Insurance Co. Gary Hill, J. Gary Hill
Service – This is the 10th anniversary of our Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat. Having participated on a builder team the past three builds…this is one of the most gratifying things you can do. I hope you will find a way to join our efforts in November. It will be well worth your time!

Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat Celebrating Our 10 Year Partnership The Greensboro Builders Association and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro are teaming up the week of November 4 - 8 to construct 5-7 houses in one week at The Village at Northside. This will be our 10th year anniversary since our first build in 2003 in which we constructed 12 homes in one week. To date we have built 43 homes and renovated 3 homes through our partnership. This year’s goal is to meet or exceed assisting 50 families achieve home ownership in our first 10 years. Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat brings builders, remodelers, suppliers and trade contractors together to work side by side to build houses from foundation to dedication in one incredible week. Builder teams are being formed with our kickoff meeting scheduled for Thursday, September 5 at 4 pm at the GBA office. In years past, 3-5 builders have partnered on the construction of a house. We will be constructing the homes to meet Energy Star and the National Green Building Standard. Recognizing the continuing challenges of today’s economy for all our members, Habitat is working diligently to secure funding to help us cover labor and material costs. Many GBA members have already offered substantial in-kind contributions that include framing packages; concrete; HVAC equipment and installation; siding; windows; cabinets; gutters; paint; and more! Why Participate? It’s a great opportunity to help others in our community…while building stronger relationships with industry members as you work side-by-side during the week. Yes, it can be long days and hard work…but it’s extremely rewarding. There are numerous ways to be involved from serving on one of the builder teams; to providing products, labor and services for the construction of the home; to serving on our Logistics & Hospitality team. In addition, individual and corporate financial contributions to help purchase building materials are greatly appreciated. Check out the GBA website for updates on this year’s Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat build. You can find a list of participating builders, along with industry partners who have committed materials and resources to date. Consider joining our 2013 Raising Roofs Team…as together we are changing lives by providing homes and neighborhoods. 4 GREENSBORO BUILDERS ASSOCIATION - BUILDER UPDATE

TREBIC Update Jordan Lake Rules
Pig, Poultry & Politics
If you’ve heard of the Jordan Lake Rules, you know that 4 of them – Existing Development, New Development, Sewer Plants and Stream Buffers – would cost $2-3 Billion and still not clean up the lake. This is because most of the pollution comes from Agriculture and Forestry, which aren’t required to do much. To add insult to injury, it’s debatable whether the Triad’s Haw River arm of the lake is even polluted. Working with Senator Phil Berger last summer, TREBIC won a 2-year delay in the New Development rule, saving our industry in Guilford and Alamance Counties $8-10 million. We then asked the legislature to consider removing requirements that aren’t worth their costs. When Senators Rick Gunn and Trudy Wade proposed our changes, the new Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) admitted that the rules would not fix Jordan Lake’s problems. So legislators considered repealing the rules altogether, but the bill that finally passed is a great hybrid, one that the Governor should sign. The bill leaves all the rules that are already in effect and delays the rest of them for 3 years (including New Development and Existing Development.) Meanwhile, DENR will conduct a pilot project to clean the lake using buoys that circulate water so algae doesn’t grow. This technology has worked in some lakes and failed in others. If it works at Jordan, the Triad may be off the hook, saving Triad taxpayers and customers $1-2 Billion! Land development regulations (which already control pollution) would not get worse, adding thousands to the price of every home and building. And our cities would not have to spend millions tearing up our older neighborhoods to build retention ponds. Also, a committee will consider our proposed changes over the next year. Because the Stream Buffer rule is already in effect, the bill makes important changes to it now, so we can build the very large buildings a logistics and manufacturing economy needs, like FedEx and Honda Jet, while keeping all other development practical too.

Construction Underway at Peacehaven Farm In 2011, GBA members worked together to refurbish the barn at Peacehaven Community Farm. It was a few weeks of work and fun that ensured that their barn will serve the future residents of Peacehaven and our community through many more seasons. Peacehaven was founded to be a place for adults with disabilities to live independently within the embrace of the community around them. They are excited to announce that they are partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Greensboro to build their first home, Susan’s View. A wall-raising celebration is scheduled for Saturday, August 24 at 11:30 am. For those of you that were able to participate in the barn rehab, friendships were formed and together we experienced great satisfaction sharing our resources with an organization engaged in making our community a better place for all people. This year as Peacehaven is focused on building their first home, they are donating all of their produce to help local hunger needs. We invite and encourage all association members to join with Peacehaven and Habitat to build this first home. Volunteer workdays are scheduled on Saturdays and Wednesdays from 7:45 am - 3:30 pm. They especially need help on Wednesdays.
