n an effort to reduce violence in schools, Governor Larry Hogan has launched the Safe Schools Maryland tip line and mobile app. “Incidents of targeted violence at our schools are rarely sudden impulsive acts; instead, in the majority of these incidents, another person was aware of what the student was thinking or planning to do,” said Governor Hogan at the Maryland Emergency Management Agency in October. “We must remain ever vigilant when it comes to protecting our kids, and we are counting on our local school communities, our students, teachers, and parents to work together with us in these important efforts.” The tip line will be online 24/7 with trained technicians, and the staff will share any information to the appropriate school systems, officials, staff and law enfocement officials to prevent violence in schools from taking place. The Safe Schools mobile app is available for iPhones and Android. The Safe Schools program encourages students, parents, faculty, staff, and members of communities to use the anonymous, app- and web-based reporting

system to share concerns including mental health crises, bullying, school and/or community violence, drug activity, abuse, and harassment. According to Hogan, “Sadly, all too often students, choose to remain silent because they are afraid of retaliation, rejection, or stigmatization by their peers. The troubling result is a ‘code of silence’ in which students suffer harm that could have been prevented if another person had chosen to speak out. We need to empower our students to break that ‘code of silence.” “If they see unsafe situations or behavior, including threats made in person or on social media, bullying, or a friend who expresses the desire to hurt themselves or others,” he said, “we need young Marylanders to say something and to do something without fear of retribution for coming forward.” More details about the app and tip line are available at SafeSchoolsMD.org. The tip line is: 1-833-MD-B-SAFE (1-833-632-7233). — Ann Levelle

Avoiding camp calamities Questions to ask to make sure your kids have a safe summer B Y D AV I D GREISMAN
T
eresa Favero’s 7-year-old son left camp last summer with an adult who didn’t have permission to take him. Fortunately, the adult was someone the family knew. But
the possible nightmare scenario led them to think more about where their kids would spend their summers.
“You’re leaving your kids with people you’ve never met before, and
hoping and praying that they come back to you safe and sound at the end of the day,” says Favero, of Columbia. Finding the right camp for your children involves much more than learning what they’ll be doing and where. There are other questions that should be asked—questions that will let you know how prepared camps are to keep worst-case scenarios from happening, and how ready they are to respond just in case they do. Here are four of the most important questions to ask before choosing a camp for your child this summer.
1. Is your camp certified? In Maryland, a camp certified by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene meets the minimum standards for hiring camp staff, keeping kids safe, and handling injuries and other serious situations. “They’re very thorough,” says Michael Strawbridge, co-owner of Bayside Summer Camp in Annapolis, of the DHMH certification guidelines. Many camp directors, however, say they seek to go above and beyond the state minimums to keep campers as safe as possible. Some even strive for more stringent accreditation by the American

injuries. Camps also should have policies regarding allergies and medications.
“The only way kids can really have fun and enjoy camp is to have those safety precautions in effect from day one,” Peddicord says.
Camps tend to have extended orientations and training sessions well before the first day for their entire staff, according to directors. They go over protocol for responding to situations, and some camps practice specific scenarios. “We had a girl who hit her head while trying to do a handstand in the pool,” says Katy Stratchko, who runs Camp Sport Fit in Bowie.

“Our program has college students and even high school youth work with us over the summer, but we also like to let parents know that there is a nice blend of teachers and youth development professionals who work with us as well,” says Lana Smith, vice president of youth and family experience for Y in Central Maryland. “Young folks are great with kids, but they’ve not had that handson experience that teaches them how to be prepared for the unexpected.” It’s also important to ask about the camper-to-staff ratio. Several camp directors say they seek to do better than the state minimum,

which can vary depending on things like the campers’ ages, the size of the group and the type of activity. Doing so allows a staff member to peel off if necessary and help (or discipline) a camper without endangering the others. Parents should also ask about safety practices for other activities,

We hiked, fished and discovered the most pleasurable way to pass an evening was rocking on the porch. Mountain Lake Lodge Ever wonder if the resort in the movie "Dirty Dancing" was real? Well, it is, and you can stay there. Just twenty minutes from Blacksburg, Virginia and Virginia Tech, lies the Mountain Lake Lodge. Built in 1936, the secluded mountain resort looks much the same as it did in the movie. You can stay in the main stone lodge where rooms lack televisions so families can reconnect without distraction, or book one of the front lawn cabins, like the Virginia Cottage, also known as ‘Baby’s Cabin.’ The hotel offers 23 miles of hiking and biking trails and an adventure center with an extensive zip line course. Farm-to-table cuisine reigns at Harvest, the resort’s acclaimed restaurant. Or you can unwind at the Tavern, a casual restaurant with a cozy stone fireplace. For true movie buffs, visit during one of the resort’s four-times-a-year “Dirty Dancing Weekends” when the hotel is transformed into Kellerman’s, movie scenes are reenacted by professional dancers, ballroom dancing lessons are offered, and the film is screened round the clock. 115 Hotel Circle, Pembroke, Va. 540-626-7121 mtnlakelodge.com Rates from $150

The Homestead Established in 1766 as a wooden hotel for homesteaders, the Homestead is known as ‘America’s First Resort.’ The Homestead has hosted 23 U.S. presidents, including Thomas Jefferson, who was drawn to the area’s natural hot springs. Today, the Homestead is a grand resort with 483 rooms and suites and a world-class spa with the same natural hot springs that first lured our nation’s founders. Take a hike on the cascades trail through the Allegheny Mountains past a series of waterfalls or learn the ancient sport of falconry. Spend the afternoon fly-fishing with an Orvis-trained guide or take a horse-drawn carriage ride up the mountain. The resort’s impressive pool complex promises hours of refreshment along with the hotel’s historic indoor pool (built in 1904), fed by naturally warm mineral water. The main dining room with live music offers fine dining with a nostalgic air, while casual options like Martha’s Market and Sam Snead’s Tavern have everything from sandwiches to ribs for the hungry family after a day spent exploring the mountain. 7696 Sam Snead Highway, Hot Springs, Va. 800-838-1766 omnihotels.com/hotels/homestead-virginia Rates from $175

Skytop Lodge Skytop Lodge in the Pocono Mountains has been operating since 1928. Nestled at the base of the West Mountain, the Dutch Colonial style manor house overlooks pristine Skytop Lake. The Manor House has 124 recently renovated rooms and there are 12 four-bedroom cottages on the property. Dining is a treat at Skytop— from the casual Lakeview restaurant to the nostalgic Tea Room, designed to resemble a corner drugstore. Families can swim in the lake or in the indoor or outdoor pools, or spend a day canoeing, hiking, skeet shooting or golfing. Challenge your crew to a game of archery tag, a family-friendly game with foam-tipped arrows. No visit to Skytop would be complete without participating in the resort’s signature ‘Grand March,’ during which guests parade through the hotel to the live music of the Doug Smith Orchestra, a tradition dating back to the 1940s. Mohonk Mountain Resort Mohonk Mountain Resort, a castle-style Victorian hotel in the Hudson River Valley, lies just 90 minutes north of New York City. The Smiley family opened Mohonk Mountain Resort in 1869 and fourth and fifth-generation family members still manage the hotel today. Designated a national historic landmark, Mohonk is surrounded by 4,400 acres of natural forest and has 85 miles of hiking trails just outside the hotel’s entrance. Accommodations feature authentic Victorian décor with views over the valley or Lake Mohonk. Activities range from culinary classes to rock climbing and canoeing, but it’s the kids’ program that keeps families returning year after year. The award-winning program includes lake activities like fishing and swimming, art classes and nature programs—all included in the nightly rate. As an all-inclusive resort, rates at Mohonk include three gourmet meals a day, afternoon tea, cookies, the kids’ program and most activities. 1000 Mountain Rest Road, New Paltz, N.Y. 844-207-8372 mohonk.com From $500 (includes three meals a day, afternoon tea, cookies, activities and kids’ program.)

Mt. Washington Hotel Families have been coming to the Mt. Washington Hotel since 1902, when it first opened near Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. Boasting spectacular views of the White Mountains, the hotel’s 200 rooms and suites have hosted three presidents and Thomas Edison. The hotel has undergone extensive renovations and is now owned by Omni resorts. Outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking and fly-fishing are the main draw, but you can also indulge in the hotel’s 25,000 square-foot spa after a day playing 18 holes on the golf course. Kids will enjoy spending the afternoon tubing down the Ammonoosuc River or taking a trip to the top of the mountain on the historic Cog Railway. Older kids seeking thrills will love the Bretton Woods canopy tour, one of the longest zip line courses in the country, that flies over sky bridges, treetops and scenic Rosebrook canyon. Dining ranges from the formal main dining room, to the Cave, a renovated historic speakeasy. 310 Mount Washington Hotel Road, Bretton Woods, N.H. 603-278-1000 omnihotels.com/hotels/bretton-woods-mount-washington Rates from $200

Dining out When Your Family Has Food Allergies
"F
or want of a nail, a shoe was lost.” For Paul Antico, the old proverb went the other way. For want of a restaurant with allergy-friendly options for his family, AllergyEats was born. Paul Antico is the father of five children, three of whom have food allergies. Twenty-year-old Tucker has a tree nut allergy; 16-year-old Keegan is allergic to tree nuts, sesame and dairy (and also has eosinophilic esophagitis, an autoimmune disease in which, as a reaction to certain foods or allergens or to acid reflux, a white blood cell known as eosinophil builds up in the lining of the esophagus and can inflame or injure the esophageal tissue); and eight-year-old Bree, Antico’s youngest child, is allergic to egg.“AllergyEats really came about from our own frustrations with dining out and, frankly, the time it would take to find restaurants that really understood food allergies,” says Antico, who lives in Cohasset, Mass. The scope of the situation started to sink in for Antico one
You can help!
AllergyEats is always looking for restaurant reviews from families with food-allergies and sensitivities. If you would like to share a review about a restaurant you have visited—good experience or bad—go to AllergyEats.com or download the mobile app.

weekend in 2006 when his wife went away with their daughter Ashley on a trip, leaving him at home with Tucker and Keegan. “We went to eat out on Saturday night because my cooking is limited to breakfast,” Antico confesses. “All the places we usually [went to] that I knew we were comfortable with had long waits. We ended up driving around for two hours, the kids were so upset and hungry, and I’m frustrated because I just didn’t know where to go. We ended up at a small pizza joint that had egg-free pasta. I just kept thinking as I drove, ‘I wish there was a guide.’ ” For Antico, this was no idle wish. When he left his job as a financial analyst two years later, looking for a new direction and to de-stress, he began planning AllergyEats in earnest and, in early 2010, officially launched it. Today, AllergyEats is the largest online guide to allergy-friendly restaurants nationwide. The website and mobile app encompass large restaurant chains, small diners and everything in between. Users can search for restaurants by specific food allergy or intolerance and location; AllergyEats also provides live links to restaurant websites, online menus, restaurant ratings, a “Food for Thought” blog, and even a Disney World specific dining guide. “My goal is to alleviate a bit of the stress that often accompanies food allergies,” Antico writes on the site. “It will mean a lot to me if I can help a child enjoy a special birthday dinner in a restaurant, rather than just another hot dog somewhere easy.” —Joyce Heid
