Child Find Evaluates Kids Ages 3 to 5 for Developmental Delays and Disabilities
T
hree is an exciting milestone—your little one is no longer a baby and preschool is on the horizon. But what if you have concerns about whether your child is on track with his or her peers? Rachel Horak of Odenton contacted Anne Arundel County Child Find to request an evaluation for her daughter Arleigh following a routine visit with her pediatrician. “Arleigh had limited speech, but was very independent so I always assumed speech would just pick up on its own,” says Horak. “When she was still behind at two, her pediatrician recommended a speech evaluation.” Child Find diagnosed Arleigh with autism spectrum disorder. It was recommended she be placed in the Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) preschool program at Oakwood Elementary. There she received one-on-one social and speech services. Child Find services stem from the federal law called the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, which requires school districts to have a process for identifying and evaluating children who may need special education or services such as counseling, speech or occupational therapy. If a family believes their child could benefit from special education or related services they can contact Child Find to request an evaluation. The program covers every child from birth to age 21. In Anne Arundel County, the Preschool Child Find office focuses on children ages 3 to 5. If the school system agrees that the child may have a disability, it will set up an evaluation. During this evaluation, the family will discuss concerns about their child’s development with the Child Find team, consisting of a speech/language pathologist, special educator, occupational therapist and/or physical therapist. The team will gather information in areas of concern through formal, standardized assessment, and use any information already available from prior services through the Infants and Toddlers program. Following the evaluation, there will be an Eligibility Determination

Meeting which will officially determine whether or not a child meets the criteria to receive special education services. In order to be eligible for special education services when turning 3, a child must have one of 14 educational disabilities that negatively impacts his/ her ability to successfully participate in preschool level activities. These disabilities include: developmental delay; speech or language impairment; autism; hearing or visual impairment; intellectual disability; orthopedic impairment; emotional disability; or traumatic brain injury. If your child is eligible to receive special education services, a follow-up Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting will be scheduled to develop an appropriate program to meet your child’s specific needs. For Arleigh, the Early Childhood Intervention program was chosen to best suit her individual needs. Other children receive services at home, private preschools, Head Start programs or in childcare. The goal is for the child to receive services tailored to his or her individual needs in a natural setting and the least restrictive environment. After Arleigh finished attending the ECI preschool, she continued to receive weekly speech- and one-on-one social services. “Both specialists came to her Preschool so it was very convenient,” says Horak. Today Arleigh receives speech services from a private contractor and attends Indian Creek School, where she continues to thrive. Her mom describes her as chatty and social with a passion for learning. If you have concerns about your child’s development or feel he/ she may have a disability, contact your local Child Find office to request an evaluation. Anne Arundel County residents can start their search at aacps.org/childfind. Contact numbers for all the Child Find offices in Maryland can be found here: marylandpublicschools.org/programs —Joyce Heid

They were excited about the cabins and the college-aged counselors at the Centreville camp. They couldn’t wait to play on the climbing apparatuses in the river, zip along the water in a speedboat and try paddleboarding. for your child, Holland says. This also allows children to become
familiar with the camp setting. Some camps host open houses, events or festivals during the off-season. When children see where they’ll eat, sleep and play, their minds are put at ease, says Kaitlin Horvath, associate director at Camp Wright in Stevensville.
Involve Your Kids Children should always be involved in the search for camp. This will make them feel like they are part of the decision making, and allows them to choose a camp that fits their interests and personalities. “The kids are going to be most successful at camp if they’re doing something they choose to do,” Sweeney says. The Dumler children visited a few area camps before deciding on Camp Pecometh, their mother says.

Pick Out Camp Supplies
Reserve Your Child’s Space Today!
Start shopping for the fun stuff, Horvath says. This might mean games, sidewalk chalk, hair accessories, swimsuits, sunglasses or a journal. Picking out these camp supplies might just help your child eagerly anticipate summer camp. Camp Wright puts camp supply lists online early, and sometimes parents give supplies for Christmas. Packing early is also a way to encourage enthusiasm, Horvath says. “You can never have too much

bathroom. Talk about scenarios your child might encounter and how he or she might handle each situation. “Camp teaches kids how to be active participants, ask questions, ask for help and try new things. They leave understanding that it’s okay to feel a little uncomfortable sometimes, because that’s generally what happens when you’re getting ready to learn something,” says Tom Holland, former CEO of the American Camp Association. “The camp experience translates back in real-world experience in an ‘I can’ attitude.”

ver dreamed of spending your days gathering eggs, picking berries and bottle-feeding baby calves? Now you can—on a farm stay vacation. Farm stays have long been popular in Europe, and now more American farms are opening their doors to give families the chance to experience life on a real working farm. “Families that choose a farm stay vacation are looking for a connection to the natural world; they want their children to see and experience something that they may have only seen in books,” says Scotti Jones, executive director of Farm Stays USA, an organization dedicated to promoting agritourism and farm stays. “A farm stay is a hands-on experience. Most people have never eaten an egg they have just gathered or seen where their food is produced. It’s an educational opportunity, but also the chance to experience rural hospitality and great food,” Jones says. At Hull-O Farms in Durham, N.Y., farmers Sherry Hull and husband Frank have welcomed visitors to their

300-acre dairy farm for 25 years. Like many multi-generational farmers, the Hull family began hosting visitors as a way to offset the rising costs of the farm, but the benefits have been farreaching. “We have met wonderful families from all over the world,” Sherry says, “and it’s rewarding to see guests leave our farm feeling so refreshed. It can be simple, but so impactful to bring a child to a farm.” On a farm stay, families are invited to pitch in with morning chores like milking cows and feeding horses, and enjoy the simple pleasures of farm life, like porch rocking and evening campfires. “A farm visit can be a wonderful bonding opportunity and it gives kids an understanding and respect for what farmers do and how hard they work,” Hull says. With more than 1,500 farm stays in the U.S., you can find a one that offers everything from fishing to foraging. Here are five down-to-earth options for experiencing life the way Old McDonald intended.
Verdant View Farm
Hull-O Farms
For authentic country living, head to Verdant View Farms in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country. There you can visit with the farm’s cows, goats, chickens, pigs, or the farm’s beloved dog, Scooby. At 7:30 each morning, join the farm crew for chores that might include bottle-feeding baby calves, milking the cows, feeding the chickens, or gathering eggs. Breakfast might include locally sourced milk and yogurt, fruit, fresh eggs, homemade jam, and produce from the kitchen garden. Visitors to Verdant View have the opportunity to add educational aspects to their stay, such as learning to make artisan cheeses, goat’s-milk soap or homemade ice cream. The farm is ideally situated for exploring the area’s Amish country attractions like Dutch Wonderland or the Strasburg Railroad. Verdant View Farm, Paradise, Pa. Rates from $99 including breakfast, accommodations verdantview.com
In the Catskill Mountains two hours north of New York City, Hull-O Farms welcomes guests to a genuine experience on a working dairy farm. There you can spend the morning milking cows, feeding baby animals like sheep, goats, calves and bunnies, or visit with the farm’s horses and ducks. How to Keep Kids Safe From Lyme Disease
I
f you find a tick, take it off as quickly as possible by giving it a steady tug with a pair of tweezers, says Dr. Susan Besser, a specialist with Anne Arundel Medical Group River Family Physicians in Easton. The sooner the tick is removed the better. If the tick is found within 40 hours and is not yet engorged with blood, the risk of contracting Lyme is less likely, she says. It is not necessary to save the tick but check regularly for the telltale rash. “There’s no need to do a prophylactic antibiotic treatment, but watch the kids,” Besser says. “The characteristic rash is what you look for with Lyme disease.” It may take seven to 10 days for the rash to appear, and it may not look like a classic target but will always be round or oval and a couple of inches in diameter, according to Dr. John Aucott, assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and director of the Johns Hopkins Lyme Disease Research Center.
Should a test for Lyme be administered?
What symptoms should alert parents that their child may have Lyme even if they have not found a tick?
“Prevention, prevention, prevention!” Besser says, and Aucott agrees. Especially during the high-risk period in June and July—when the small nymph ticks come out to feed (they are the size of a poppy seed)—kids should play on well-groomed grass and not climb through the brush in the woods, Aucott says. If they do go into the woods, they should wear long pants and long sleeves and older children should have pyrethrin applied to the clothing, he says. Parents should also check for ticks every day. Besser also warns that pets should be treated for ticks so they don’t carry deer ticks into the house.
An unexplained summer flu-like illness with achy joints, fatigue and fever (but not cold symptoms or vomiting) could indicate Lyme, Aucott says. If a child has these symptoms, check everywhere for a rash, including behind the knees, scalp and groin area, he says. The rash can last for weeks without treatment. It is possible to have Lyme without a rash, but 80 percent report a rash, he says.
28 • BIG BOOK FOR FAMILIES 2020 • ChesapeakeFamily.com
The test is not instantaneous because is based on antibodies being in the system, Besser says, which may take up to 10 to 14 days after exposure. She prefers to treat the symptoms, she explains. “I’m a clinician. I look toward the patient history and what the patient looks like, and I treat the patient,” she says. “If I’m concerned about Lyme disease, I might go ahead and treat them if the symptoms are pretty classic.” While Aucott recommends the test, he says the symptoms should be considered if there is a negative result. “If it’s June and it’s an unexplained flu-like illness, some doctors may choose to treat,” he says. “If they have a rash, you don’t need a test. If you don’t have a rash, you have to consider other tick born illnesses.”
