A Dozen Reasons to Choose Catholic Schools You want the best for your child. That includes the best education. Give your child an opportunity to reach their intellectual, physical, social and moral potential by enrolling them in a Catholic elementary, middle or high school in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Almost 25,000 students attend a Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, which include 45 elementary and middle schools and 19 high schools located in Baltimore City, Allegany, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Harford, Howard and Washington Counties. Archdiocese of Baltimore schools have a lot to offer. Here’s what sets them apart from other schools. Academic Excellence
Excellence in college, and in life, starts with excellence in the classroom. Archdiocese of Baltimore students consistently score above state and national averages on standardized tests, including the SAT and ACT. Students receive a balanced curriculum that includes the basics as well as music and arts, foreign language, science, math, technology, and Catholic faith. Twenty-five Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore have received the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award by the U.S. Department of Education—the highest academic honor awarded by the U.S. government.
Technology in the Classroom
Students use “real world” technology in the classroom: iPads, Google Chromebooks and other tools to assist learning.
Athletic Programs
STEM Focus
Service
St. Joan of Arc School in Aberdeen and Resurrection-St. Paul School in Ellicott City both received STEM certifications from AdvancedEd, and international accrediting organization.
Starting in elementary school, students have the opportunity to participate in soccer, basketball, cross-country and other activities. In middle and high school, the options extend to sports such as lacrosse, rowing, baseball, football, wrestling and more. Many students receive scholarships to play at the college level. Community service is a big part of Catholic school student life. Students learn how to put others first and see how their actions can contribute to the common good of the wider community. Catholic school students from preschool to 12th grade participate in service projects throughout the year. Projects range from collecting items for food pantries and volunteering at senior centers to helping to build homes for people in developing countries.
Students collaborate, communicate, problem-solve, ask questions, research and create projects, all with new technology. Technology isn’t viewed as just an add-on, but instead as integral to student learning.
Catholic Faith and Values
Safe, Nurturing Learning
Catholic schools emphasize moral development. They prepare students to be productive citizens and future leaders, emphasizing the importance of community service. Catholic schools teach respect of self and others.
Catholic schools have a long history of educating children of all religious backgrounds. About 30 percent of the student body is comprised of children from non-Catholic families. Surveys have shown that families from all faiths appreciate the emphasis on prayer, morals and values.
Dedicated Faculty and Staff
Signature Programs
Teachers in area Catholic schools do more than teach. They take time to get to know their students and figure out how they learn best. Their attention allows students’ best selves to come forth. Teachers instill a positive learning environment that helps kids get excited about school.
Extracurricular and Co-curricular Activities
In addition to regular studies, students have a chance to participate in dozens of outside activities, including marching band, performing arts, environmental studies and robotics, to name a few of the many activities students can explore. If you pay attention to social media, you may have seen and heard the Cardinal Shehan Catholic School choir’s rendition of “Rise Up,” the hit song by Andra Day. Their performance went viral, with over 60 million views, earning the choir an appearance on “Good Morning America!”
Although Catholic identity is a part of the school experience, Archdiocese of Baltimore schools welcome children from all faiths.
Archdiocese of Baltimore schools offer educational programs to meet the needs of its diverse community. Signature programs vary from school to school. For example, Archbishop Borders School in the Highlandtown neighborhood of Baltimore offers a dual language Spanish immersion program that starts as early as preschool. St. Pius X School in Rodgers Forge just north of Baltimore and close to Towson, is currently the only Catholic Montessori school in Maryland. St. Francis of Assisi School, a prek-8th grade school in northeast Baltimore, became the first nonpublic school in Baltimore to become an International Baccalaureate World School. The program develops middle school students into internationally minded leaders.

Sponsored by Archdiocese of Baltimore
All Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore have a STEM-focused curriculum. Many schools have Makerspace, STEM Labs or Innovation Labs to enhance the STEM curriculum.
Green Schools
Eighteen schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore have received recognition by the State of Maryland as Green Schools from the Maryland Association for Environmental & Outdoor Education. Green schools encourage students to think about environmental impact and to make sustainable choices in terms of water conservation, energy conservation, solid waste reduction and habitat restoration
Learning Difference Programs
Many Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore offer programs for students with learning differences. The PRIDE (Pupils Receiving Inclusive Diversified Education) program is the signature learning difference program of the Archdiocese, and is offered at St. Michel-St. Clement School in Overlea, St. Mark in Catonsville and St. John Regional Catholic School in Frederick. PRIDE is an innovative program designed to meet the unique learning needs of k-8th students. Experienced special education teachers use customized programs, smaller class sizes and a modified Language Arts and/or Math curriculum to help students achieve their greatest learning potential.

W
orking families in Maryland with a child care provider who participates in the Maryland EXCELS program may qualify for financial assistance through the Child Care Scholarship
(CCS), formerly known as the Child Care Subsidy Program. The CCS program is funded through a combination of state and federal sources, which provide financial assistance to help eligible families working or attending educational/training programs to afford child care costs by issuing vouchers, which are then given to the child care providers. In 2018 Governor Larry Hogan signed a law that increases provider reimbursement rates over the next three years to “not less than the 60th percentile of the cost of child care market rate by 2022.” This legislation, combined with improved federal funding through the Child Care Development Block Grant, allows CCS to reach more eligible families. Eligibility for CCS is based on annual income and the number of household members. The sliding scale starts at an annual income of $48,637 for a family of two, increasing with each additional family member all the way up to $102,996 for a family of ten. In addition, the following requirements must be met by the applicant(s): • A Maryland resident who is working/employed, in an approved training program or attending school. For families where both parents live within the same household, both parents must meet all eligibility requirements.

Navigating High School volunteer requirements
A
s high school students get back into the swing of the new school year, they’ll need to fulfill duties both inside and outside of the classroom. With service hours required for high school graduations across the state, now’s the time to make sure your kids plan their volunteer efforts for the year. The Maryland State Board of Education requires every public high school student to complete at least 75 service hours to graduate. In Anne Arundel County (AACPS), service hours are completed through classroom initiatives between fifth and twelfth grades. The curriculum begins in fifth grade with five hours, then continues with ten hours per year in middle school and high school. Each project is divided into three-steps: Preparation, Action, and Reflection. Preparation involves researching a need within the community and receiving any necessary training to complete the project. Action is taking the information or training learned and applying to the community directly, indirectly, or through advocacy. Students can earn additional service hours through service clubs, guidance activities, IB programs, as well as independent service projects. Completing outside service projects can increase a student’s college acceptance chances as well as entrance into National Honors Society and other service-oriented clubs. To help parents, the AACPS system released the Implementation Plan for 2017–2020, which highlights effects and importance of service in schools, at aacps.org/ page/2304. Private school service hour requirements differ by school. However, students perform the same types of service activities. For example, the students at Archbishop Spalding need 60 hours over a four-year period to graduate. The school requires students to complete 25 of those 60 hours at outreach volunteer facilities such as Sarah’s House or the Light House Shelter. At Severn School, graduation requirements include 10 hours a year, where no more than two may be done at the school itself, and the rest must be direct service. Serving one’s community opens a wide range of networks as well
as positive outcomes such as scholarships and grants to those who dedicate themselves to helping others. Every year, high schools recognize the seniors who exemplified outstanding service in the community. Schools nominate those who exhibited and performed excellent service for the Maryland State Department of Education Service Star Awards. For more service opportunities in Anne Arundel County, Anne Arundel Community College’s Center for Public and Community Service actively promotes volunteer opportunities in the county through volunteermatch.org. —Kelly Szalankiewicz

If you enjoy working with animals, find a local animal shelter to spend some time at the Maryland SPCA or the SPCA of Anne Arundel County. Both offer positions such as helping with events or with the animals themselves. mdspca.org aacspca.org
If you like helping those in need, the Anne Arundel County Food Bank needs volunteers yearround as sorters and office workers to help feed those who go hungry in our neighborhoods.
If you prefer a more hands-on approach or have a knack for building, the Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake located in Baltimore is always looking for volunteers to build houses for those less fortunate in the Chesapeake area. habitat chesapeake.org

Tips to Navigate the Financial Aid Field
W
hen learning about financial aid and its associated lingo— the FAFSA, CSS Profile, and 529 plans all come to mind—it can feel like you’re drowning in alphabet soup. Here are five tips from Rhiannon Schade, director at Collegewise, the largest college counseling company in the nation, that will keep you on track.
1. Know where financial aid comes from. The Federal
Government is the biggest source of financial aid for all students. When you fill out the FAFSA, you’re applying for need-based aid from Uncle Sam (although all students who file a FAFSA are eligible for federal unsubsidized student loans, so it’s a good idea to file regardless of whether you feel you’ll qualify for need-based aid). Colleges themselves provide the second most financial aid. The best strategy you can employ to get more financial aid dollars is to apply to a balanced list of colleges, including schools that are safe bets academically (and thus more likely to give you merit-based aid).
2. Assess where you stand in relation to the rest of the applicant pool. Colleges that offer merit aid are discounting tuition to encourage high-achieving students to choose them over other universities. If you want merit aid, apply to at least four colleges where, based on your grades and test scores, you have a very high chance of being admitted—because those are the colleges that are most likely to give you with an attractive scholarship offer.
3. Use net price calculators. The sticker price quoted on college
websites is often different from the net price that families pay. You can get a sense of how much college will cost your family by using a net price calculator—federal law mandates that colleges display a net price calculator on their website. The calculator gives you a general idea of what level of aid you might qualify for and what you’ll end up paying out of pocket.
4. Look locally for outside scholarships. I recommend focusing
on small, local scholarships. Because they tend to have fewer applicants, your chances of winning are greater. Most high school guidance offices have a good sense of what local scholarships might be available, so ask your school counselor about scholarships and funds designed to support the education of students within your community.
5. Know what’s required and stay on top of deadlines.
As you are building your college list, keep track of which forms are required and their filing deadlines. I recommend completing the financial aid forms soon after they become available—that means submitting the FAFSA during October of your senior year. For more tips on how to increase your financial aid award, visit Collegewise.com.

Child Find Evaluates Kids Ages 3 to 5 for Developmental Delays and Disabilities
T
hree is an exciting milestone—your little one is no longer a baby and preschool is on the horizon. But what if you have concerns about whether your child is on track with his or her peers? Rachel Horak of Odenton contacted Anne Arundel County Child Find to request an evaluation for her daughter Arleigh following a routine visit with her pediatrician. “Arleigh had limited speech, but was very independent so I always assumed speech would just pick up on its own,” says Horak. “When she was still behind at two, her pediatrician recommended a speech evaluation.” Child Find diagnosed Arleigh with autism spectrum disorder. It was recommended she be placed in the Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) preschool program at Oakwood Elementary. There she received one-on-one social and speech services. Child Find services stem from the federal law called the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, which requires school districts to have a process for identifying and evaluating children who may need special education or services such as counseling, speech or occupational therapy. If a family believes their child could benefit from special education or related services they can contact Child Find to request an evaluation. The program covers every child from birth to age 21. In Anne Arundel County, the Preschool Child Find office focuses on children ages 3 to 5. If the school system agrees that the child may have a disability, it will set up an evaluation. During this evaluation, the family will discuss concerns about their child’s development with the Child Find team, consisting of a speech/language pathologist, special educator, occupational therapist and/or physical therapist. The team will gather information in areas of concern through formal, standardized assessment, and use any information already available from prior services through the Infants and Toddlers program.
26 • BIG BOOK OF EDUCATION 2019-2020 • Ch e sa p e a k e F a mily.c om
Following the evaluation, there will be an Eligibility Determination Meeting which will officially determine whether or not a child meets the criteria to receive special education services. In order to be eligible for special education services when turning 3, a child must have one of 14 educational disabilities that negatively impacts his/ her ability to successfully participate in preschool level activities. These disabilities include: developmental delay; speech or language impairment; autism; hearing or visual impairment; intellectual disability; orthopedic impairment; emotional disability; or traumatic brain injury. If your child is eligible to receive special education services, a follow-up Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting will be scheduled to develop an appropriate program to meet your child’s specific needs. For Arleigh, the Early Childhood Intervention program was chosen to best suit her individual needs. Other children receive services at home, private preschools, Head Start programs or in childcare. The goal is for the child to receive services tailored to his or her individual needs in a natural setting and the least restrictive environment. After Arleigh finished attending the ECI preschool, she continued to receive weekly speech- and one-on-one social services. “Both specialists came to her Preschool so it was very convenient,” says Horak. Today Arleigh receives speech services from a private contractor and attends Indian Creek School, where she continues to thrive. Her mom describes her as chatty and social with a passion for learning. If you have concerns about your child’s development, contact your local Child Find office to request an evaluation. Anne Arundel County residents can start their search at aacps.org/childfind. Contact numbers for all the Child Find offices in Maryland can be found here: marylandpublicschools.org/programs/Documents/ Special-Ed/MITP/InfantsToddlersChildFindContactList.pdf. —Joyce Heid

Safe Schools Maryland

n an effort to reduce violence in schools, Governor Larry Hogan has launched the Safe Schools Maryland tip line and mobile app. “Incidents of targeted violence at our schools are rarely sudden impulsive acts; instead, in the majority of these incidents, another person was aware of what the student was thinking or planning to do,” said Governor Hogan at the Maryland Emergency Management Agency in October. “We must remain ever vigilant when it comes to protecting our kids, and we are counting on our local school communities, our students, teachers, and parents to work together with us in these important efforts.” The tip line is online 24/7 with trained technicians, and the staff will share any information to the appropriate school systems, officials, staff and law enfocement officials to prevent violence in schools from taking place. The Safe Schools mobile app is available for iPhones and Android. The Safe Schools program encourages students, parents, faculty, staff, and members of communities to use the anonymous, app- and web-based reporting system to share concerns including mental health crises, bullying, school and/or community violence, drug activity, abuse, and harassment. According to Hogan, “Sadly, all too often students, choose to remain silent because they are afraid of retaliation, rejection, or stigmatization by their peers. The troubling result is a ‘code of silence’ in which students suffer harm that could have been prevented if another person had chosen to speak out. We need to empower our students to break that ‘code of silence.” “If they see unsafe situations or behavior, including threats made in person or on social media, bullying, or a friend who expresses the desire to hurt themselves or others,” he said, “we need young Marylanders to say something and to do something without fear of retribution for coming forward.” More details about the app and tip line are available at SafeSchoolsMD.org. The tip line is: 1-833-MD-B-SAFE (1-833-632-7233).
