The name of this issue says it all: the BIG Book for Families is just that and we’re excited to once again share this great informational guide for your family’s health, education, and fun. Inside these pages, we’ve got directories with direct contact information to find what you need, whether you’re looking for a new Favorite Doc health care provider, a Preschool or Private School, Summer Camp Programs, or an annual Calendar of Events to look forward to. Our directories can also be found online at ChesapeakeFamily. com/Directories with even more information plus a great feature in which you can compare listings as well as find recommendations from local parents.

Have you ever discussed having a Family Mission Statement? Or are you like me and not really sure what a Family Mission Statement is? Get answers and guidance to learn about creating a mission statement on Page 6 to do together as a family.

On Page 8, you’ll find important information about an unfortunate and scary trend that is happening to children online and the resources needed to prevent predators from continuing to exploit children. It’s a tough topic to discuss but open communication and information sharing is of utmost importance when dealing with these types of situations. Another hard topic to discuss is gun violence but with the Anne Arundel County Gun Violence Intervention Team, steps are being taken with a ERPO Toolkit to help those in danger. Read more on Page 16.

Starting on Page 21, we’ve got this year’s top voted Family Favorites, 5 great stops for delicious eats along the route to the beach, and the Annual Fun Planner. In addition to road trip restaurants, Page 27 has awesome ideas to pack more fruits and veggies into your kids’ daily meals. Speaking of fun plans, mark your calendars to see us at KIDS Fest on March 11 – a FREE and family-friendly event happening at “Pip” Moyer Recreation Center in Annapolis.

Here’s to a great 2023 with everything your family needs from our BIG Book!

Your Family Mission Statement

Serving as a Compass for Kids in Decision-Making

Consider the impact of a family mission statement. How powerful could that be?

Have you ever stopped to wonder what the purpose of a mission statement is? Go on any company website and you’ll find one. A mission statement is an identity tag. It alerts customers to the company’s values and tells you what they’re striving to do. It also serves as a guide for the employees of the company. You could say that a mission statement is like a North Star.

Take a moment to think about the qualities and activities you value. What is important to you? Now think about your actions – do they consistently reflect those values? Sometimes we think and “preach” one thing only to realize we’re doing something different. Kids are constantly watching us. Quite naturally, they think what they see us doing is important, and so they follow suit.

Are you on your phone looking at social media a lot? Your kids are likely to want a screen of some kind so they can be online too. Do you enjoy reading? If your kids see you reading, they’re more apt to be readers as well. After all, if you’re doing it, it must be important.

Creating a Family Mission Statement

So how can you create a mission statement for your own family? First, make sure you and your partner are on the same page. You don’t have to agree 100% on everything, but it’s important to find your “compromise ground” in areas you differ so you can be a united front with your children. For example, perhaps one of you

Student Entrepreneurs Ages 6 - 16 Calling All Do you have a product to sell to the general public? Guidelines  You must have your own product to sell (no reselling)  You must be between the ages of 6-16  Students are responsible for setup and manning your booth during the event  You must supply your own table and setup materials For more information go to ChesapeakeFamily.com/Kidsfest Table Space is Available at KIDS Fest March 11, 11am-3pm | Pip Moyer Recreation Center, Annapolis Setup begins at 10am | Breakdown at 3pm Cost is $25 per booth

greatly values sports. You don’t mind if your child misses school for an athletic event and you are willing to give up evenings and weekends so they can be on traveling teams. Your partner thinks this is too much. It takes away from the importance of education and rarely allows you to have dinner together as a family.

Neither of you is wrong. The question is, what’s the middle ground so you both feel comfortable that your needs are being met and that you’re serving the best interests of your child too? (Remember to allow space for your child to add to this conversation later in the process!)

Define Your Values

Once you have identified the overarching values you want to guide your family, call a family meeting. Invite your kids into the conversation. Ideally, your child will add their own robust ideas, but top-down value-setting might be necessary in some situations (cell phone use comes to mind). Explain why it is important and help bring your child on board. This segues nicely into the next step, which is crucial. Discuss real-life scenarios that illustrate what these values look like – and what they do not look like. What do you do if you find yourself in this situation either as a family or as an individual?

Let’s say that a healthy lifestyle is one family value you wish to encourage. This may look like trying new foods; eating foods that are grown in the ground or come from a tree; preparing meals that include all colors of the rainbow. It does not look like eating Skittles every day because they’re rainbow colored. But it also doesn’t

have to mean that you’ll never have treats. Additionally, a healthy lifestyle looks like outdoor playtime every day. It does not look like countless hours in front of a tablet playing games. Though it could look like an hour of screentime each day.

Talk about moderation and what that means. Perfection isn’t the goal – awareness is. Your kids won’t always be with you. If they’re at a friend’s house whose family values don’t emphasize healthy living, then your kids will need a guide for what kinds of decisions to make – and the grace to know that “having values” doesn’t mean they can never stray from the rules. Nor does it mean that your family is better than someone else’s. Different families have different values; those differences are what add color to the world.

Putting It All Together

Mission statements are just that: statements. They’re usually a sentence or two. So, the final step in creating a mission statement for your family is to synthesize your goals into a short statement that is easy to remember.

You’ve likely seen a cartoon where a small devil is on the character’s one shoulder and an angel sits on the other. Both are whispering their advice – ack! Who to listen to? A short and sweet mission statement can be like that angel, reminding your child of your family’s values and helping them make decisions when they’re in a difficult situation.

Just like a company uses a mission statement to guide its choices, so too can a mission statement be your family’s North Star.

Keeping Kids Safe online W

hile kids are out of school on break, keeping an eye on their online presence is more important than ever. The FBI has released information about an increase in the number of cases that involve children and teens being threatened and coerced into sending sexual or explicit images online; this is a crime called sextortion. Sextortion is an online crime when an adult interacts with a person under the age of 18 and convinces them to share sexual pictures or perform sexual acts via the internet. Often times, the children believe they are communicating with someone their own age and they are unaware it is a predator. Once the explicit material from the child is received, they are then threatened with blackmail that the pictures or video will be released unless money or gift cards are sent.

The best defense against these terrible crimes is information-sharing and open lines of communication between you and your children. Continue to have open conversations about what is and is not appropriate online behavior and explain that anyone or anything could be

online, including predators committing crimes with bad intent. Help them understand that the internet doesn’t have a delete button; any photo or video online will always have the risk and the potential to become public.

Another crucial element is letting your child know that they can trust you and come to you for help. You are their first person that can be trusted with this information to comfort them, help them understand they are the victim in this situation, and that together, you will report this crime to the authorities and law enforcement.

To report a case of exploitation of sextortion, contact your local FBI field office, call 1-800-CALL-FBI, or report it online at tips.fbi.gov. The FBI also has staff dedicated to assisting victims of crime. Learn more about our Victim Services Division and know your rights if you are the victim of sextortion and your images have been posted online.

For more information, check out https://www.fbi.gov/ how-we-can-help-you/safety-resources/scams-and-safety/ common-scams-and-crimes/sextortion.

Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) Toolkit

Anne Arundel County Gun Violence Intervention Team Shares Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) Toolkit

When someone is at risk of violence to themselves or others, an ERPO civil order with due process protections, can be issued by a court. The order allows law enforcement, family members and health care professionals to petition a court to temporarily remove firearms from a person who poses a risk of imminent harm to self or others. For the duration of the order, the individual is also prohibited from purchasing firearms. The Anne Arundel County Department of Health’s Gun Violence Intervention Team (GVIT) released an online resource to help residents learn more about Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs).

ERPO Toolkit

This new ERPO toolkit is designed to be a local resource, giving Anne Arundel County residents easy access to information about ERPOs, along with details on how to file one, who can file for an ERPO, how long they last, and a number to call to ask questions.

“ERPO laws empower families and law enforcement and help prevent gun deaths and protect communities,” Anne Arundel County Health Officer Dr. Nilesh Kalyanaraman said. “This online resource is one more step in the GVIT’s efforts to keep communities safer by sharing information they can use.”

As an early adopter of using ERPOs, Anne Arundel County has been able to train staff from crisis response, law enforcement and the justice system. As a result, the county files more petitions for ERPOs than anywhere else in the state.

“Thanks to the trained, dedicated staff at the Police Department, our county has the highest ERPO approval rate in the state,” said County Executive Pittman. “In Anne Arundel County we are working to make communities safer.”

The GVIT was established on August 12, 2020, following an executive order by County Executive Steuart Pittman declaring gun violence a public health issue. The Team operates under the auspices of the Department of Health and works through collaborative meetings and workgroups with over a dozen partner agencies to use a public health lens, data and community engagement to reduce gun violence.

For more information on the Gun Violence Intervention Team, visit aahealth.org/gvit.

Pack Fruits and Vegetables into Kids’ Diets

Go for hidden vegetables

If you or your kids have an aversion to whole vegetables, you don’t need to force them down to reap the benefits. Hiding vegetables in pasta sauces or soups is a great way to add a nutritional boost to your food without it tasting overwhelmingly vegetable-y. You can either blend your vegetables into a homemade sauce or, if you’re time-poor, buy a ready-made version.

This is a great way to utilize tinned and frozen veg too. These options are not only more affordable, but in some cases, can be more nutritious too. You don’t just have to ‘hide’ vegetables in sauces, either – get creative and put some rutabaga into your mashed potatoes, add flavorful options into a batch of homemade hummus, or take inspiration from carrot cake and add some hidden fruit into your desserts too.

Cultivate your own veggies

Kids can be unnecessarily fussy sometimes. The mere color or shape of a vegetable might be enough to put them off before it’s even passed their lips. It can be frustrating, but there are ways around this.

Get green-fingered and grow your own fruit and vegetables – with the help of your little ones – is one way to overcome this aversion. Kids are much less likely to turn their nose up at something that they’ve put a lot of hard work into!

There are also a lot of other benefits of getting your kids stuck into gardening, from mood-boosting exposure to nature to a healthy dose of exercise that won’t over-exert them. You can even plan your recipes in advance with them to get them excited about devouring the result of their hard work.

Switch to smoothies for breakfast

Smoothies are a treat that’s extra delectable in the summer. Whether you love a berry concoction or a tropical blend, they’re an amazing and delicious way to fit more fruit and vegetables into your diet.

Trying to pack fruits and vegetables into kids’ diets is often one of life’s biggest challenges. Either they’ve tried something and didn’t like it, or they’re averse to anything even remotely healthy. Sometimes it can be hard to get your five-a-day into your own diet too, especially if you’re a busy parent. But neither of these things are impossible. Here are some tips on getting more nutrient-dense foods onto the plates of both you and your kids – without even noticing it.

Spinach and bananas make great smoothie bases, adding sweetness and a powerful dose of nutrition without being overpowering flavors. Sweet vegetables like peas, sweet potato, carrot and sweetcorn can also be added to smoothies without making them less sweet, just serve in one of your favorite mugs and enjoy.

Smoothies don’t just need to be an afternoon drink either. Use Greek yogurt in your favorite smoothie recipe for a punch of protein that’ll keep you full until lunchtime. For an extra-satiating treat that you can enjoy like cereal breakfast, try your hand at a smoothie bowl – use the smoothie as the base of your breakfast and add an extra boost to it with whole berries, banana slices, or chia seeds to make it feel like a complete meal.

Many of us grew up with an aversion to vegetables that lasted well into adulthood, or we may have kids that turn their noses up at fresh produce. With these hacks, you can pack nutrients into your diet and your kids’ meals without even noticing them.
