Mother's Day Gifts Your Mom will Love
Visit us online for more gift ideas!
other's Day is approaching fast and although we should be celebrated everyday, our super time management skills, amazing task juggling, and impressive empathetic ways are often overlooked. Many of us take Mother's Day as a day to be cherished and showered with homemade presents and flowers. Of course we love that stuff and even if we didn't, we wouldn't tell you, we would just say..."oh I love it," because that's what moms do. Moms are too tired or busy to even think about what kind of gift they could actually want for themselves. So we compiled some of the most sought out gifts from the moms closest to us. — Jenny Cardoza SPRING GUIDE

Mom procedures
F
It’s easier than ever to make changes to your appearance without a lot of expense, pain or time taken off of work. Here are three common procedures and what they entail.
A Beautiful Smile • Orthodontists tell us that their patients are most eager to change their smiles. Using Invisalign, crooked teeth can be a thing of the past, without a mouthful of metal. • Average treatment is 24 months and average cost ranges from $5,000 to $7,500. Treatment involves periodic visits to your orthodontist. Some portion of the cost may be covered by insurance or paid for with your health savings account. Visit us online for moms health
Erasing Wrinkles • It’s possible to smooth out those little lines around your eyes, mouth and on your forehead with outpatient injections of Botox or Dysport from your local aesthetician. There is minimal pain, the results last for nearly a year, and there is no recovery period. • Cost is $100 to $250 per treatment and is not covered by insurance. You’ll need to go back for more injections as your wrinkles reappear.
Clear Vision • Ever wish you didn’t need to fool with glasses or contacts? Maybe Lasik or advanced vision correction surgery is for you. Talk to your vision provider to find out exactly which procedure is best for you but most prices range from $2,500 to $7,500 and are not covered by insurance, although you can use your health savings account to pay the fee. • Recovery time will be from a day to a week. Side effects may include dry eyes, glare and blurry vision. SPRING GUIDE

The Art of upcycling: Turning Trash into Treasure Written by Lisa Snowden-McCray
I
t takes a special something to look at a pile of trash and see treasures — but if you can do it, you just might be an upcycler. Upcycling is similar to recycling in that items are reused to keep them out of trash cans and landfills. But, instead of creating a completely new product — 16

like, paper or bottles — upcyclers use their hands and their minds to create fun, interesting and beautiful items from found pieces. Artist and Baltimore resident Kirsten Lapointe says she uses found objects in her home and her work. She has upcycled desks, vanities and tables — all

from things she or her husband found on the street. “I’m a born trash picker. Every time I see something that’s shiny or interesting,” Lapointe says. “It must be part of my creativity.” Lapointe and her husband teamed up to create a mosaic table from a table base she found on the street. Even the floor of her house has been repurposed. They took up carpet and found that the floor beneath didn’t look so nice, so they painted it. Lapointe frequents stores like Goodwill looking for interesting objects for her artwork. “Kitchy stuff, earrings, old books,” she says. The found piece can be an inspiration in itself or it can help flesh out an idea she has already been working on. “Sometimes I have a piece and I’m waiting to be adding to it. Sometimes I’ll find something that inspires me to create.” Lapointe doesn’t really buy repurposed objects from a store, but she loves to take inspiration from stores to create things on her own. “If I saw something else repurposed, I’d steal the idea and try it.” Upcycled pieces are what Shannon Haddaway sells at her Eastport store, Twisted Sister. The store specializes in home décor treasures that Haddaway and other artists create — mostly from found pieces. They’ve been in business for four months. “I’m a picker,” Haddaway says. “I find stuff on roadsides, or people contact me.” It all started when she was a stay-at-
home mom, looking to use ideas that she found online, on websites like Pinterest. “I love using my hands to make something. There’s something in me that makes sense, like I don’t have to look at directions – it’s just building something. Haddaway says that there is a certain magic that comes from turning trash into treasure. “You’re so proud of what you did. It’s pride. I think that’s how all of our artists feel.” Gail Kramer and the rest of the folks at the Barn Show in Gambrills sell a lot of SPRING GUIDE

Building a raised bed By Donna Jefferson
I
f you’re a gardener without a lot of space, or if you’re tired of bending and stooping over, or if you want to increase your chances of a successful garden harvest then consider building a raised vegetable garden. One 4 foot by 8 foot raised bed, if properly maintained will provide a family of four with plenty of vegetables during an extended growing season. Before you start pounding nails consider the orientation of the garden. Eastwest orientation will provide some protection from frost, while a north-south orientation will allow each side of the bed to have sunlight on both sides of the bed during the day. Or one direction might look or work better in your garden. How far is the water? Drip irrigation works best in a raise bed. Just wind the irrigation hose through the bed and attach the end to your outside faucet or garden hose. You will have to water frequently because of the high density of plants in your bed but the water will be efficiently used since you are producing a high quantity of produce for the area being watered. Size of box 4 feet in width is ideal for being able to reach across from one side of the box to the other. The length of the box is up to you depending on how much you want to plant and maintain. The higher the box, the less bend18

Materials • Wooden boards, recycled from another project or pallet is fine just make sure the wood is untreated. • Galvanized screws • Landscaping cloth or large pieces of cardboard to line the box • 50/50 combination of soil and composting material Optional • Drip hose • PVC tubing for frame across top of box to secure climbing and tall plants
will be harder to get things in and out
Instructions 1. Cut wood to the desired length 2. Pre-drill holes before securing corners together - use additional braces such as 4X4s to create extra strength in the corners. 3. Move to final location 4. Line box with landscaping cloth (poke holes in the bottom so that worms can get in and out) or cardboard boxes. Secure landscape cloth with staples if necessary. 5. Fill with a mixture of 50/50 top soil and compost. 6. Start planting. 7. Water as needed, remembering that beds need more water than a garden on a plot of land.

four Maryland Hikes with Great views Written by Hannah Anderson
A
mazing views can be just the enticement needed to get the whole family enthusiastic about a hike in the woods. Luckily, Maryland offers plenty of hikes with breathtaking views of either the Appalachian mountains or the Chesapeake Bay. The hike up to the overlook cliff of Maryland Heights outside of Harper’s Ferry is tough, but it’s a favorite for families and kids, says Ranger David Fox. “There’s some huffing and puffing involved, but the view is the reward,” he says of the 700-foot ascent. “People tend to forget how tired or hot they might be when they stop to take it all in.” The historic town of Harper’s Ferry and the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers can 20

be seen far below and the Blue Ridge Mountains spread out in the distance. Kids can perch on the rocks of the large outcropping and look down on even the birds flying below. To help foster kids’ interest in hiking, Angela Pease, interpretive ranger with Maryland State Parks, recommends taking your time as you hike, allowing kids to go at their own pace as they explore their surroundings. “Take time to walk and experience things,” she says. “Stop and do a sniff test. Allow kids to see, touch (non-poisonous things), and smell. Promote the experience of using all their senses.” If you are looking to take the kids on a hike with a view, we have found a few

Maryland Heights Trail, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park For families who enjoy a challenge and a taste of history, the Maryland Heights Trail is part of the 2,000-mile trail system in Harpers Ferry NHP. From the trail’s overlook cliffs, you have a bird’seye view of Harpers Ferry, and you can see 50 miles across the Potomac and Shenandoah river valleys. The hike to the cliffs is steep and rocky and is about 4 miles round-trip. Difficulty: Hard Fee: $10/vehicle park entrance fee Distance: 1.5 hours from Annapolis 171 Shoreline Dr., Harpers Ferry, WV (Harpers Ferry NHP Visitor Center) 304-535-6029, nps.gov/hafe For directions to the trailhead or more information click here. Annapolis Rock and Black Rock on the Appalachian Trail Forty of the Appalachian Trail’s 2,168 miles run through Maryland. Annapolis Rock is a 2.2-mile hike from the trailhead at the parking lot on Route 40. The vista presents a view of Greenbrier Lake and Cumberland Valley to the west from an elevation of 1,700 feet. Black Rock is one mile farther north along the trail with another scenic western view. The hike to both rocks and back to the parking lot is a challenging 6.4 miles. Old Bay seasoning • 2 tsp. garlic powder • 2 lb Your favorite crabmeat (we suggest lump and claw), cleaned • 1 lb shredded mozzarella cheese ––Over low heat combine the cream cheese, mayonnaise, and spices in a large pot. Stir frequently until the cream cheese has melted and all the ingredients are blended. Fold in the crabmeat until evenly distributed. Pour mixture into a baking pan and spread evenly. ––Bake in a 425-degree oven for approximately 10 minutes. ––Remove from the oven and sprinkle the mozzarella cheese over the top. Add a little more Old Bay seasoning for color. Return to the oven until the cheese has thoroughly melted, approximately 3 minutes.
What’s a brunch without eggs? With mini quiches, you get the egg, your favorite cheeses, veggies and meats all in tantalizing bite or two, without the goopy mess that whole quiches sometimes make. The best thing about these quiches (adapted from culinaryhill.com) is that you can use whatever you have on hand to make the filling. Got some extra broccoli in the fridge? Chop it finely and toss it in. How about a few extra slices of bacon? Just use what you have on hand with a few choice cheeses and you’re all set.
Yield: 24 mini quiches EGG MIXTURE:
• 2 eggs • 1/2 cup milk • 1/4 tsp salt 1 (15 ounce) package refrigerated pie crusts (or use your favorite homemade pie crust recipe)
SUGGESTED FILLINGS:
Bacon and Swiss 6 ounces grated Swiss cheese 6 slices bacon fried and crumbled 3 tablespoons green onion sliced Ham and Cheddar: 6 ounces grated Cheddar cheese 1/2 cup (about 3 ounces) ham cubed Mushroom and Swiss 6 ounces grated Swiss Cheese 1 ounce mushrooms, chopped finely
––Let the pie crust defrost at room temperature about 15 to 20 minutes. ––Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Spray 24 miniature muffin cups with non-stick cooking spray. ––Unfold pie crusts and cut 24 rounds with a 2 ½-inch floured biscuit cutter. Press 1 round of pie crust into the bottom and up the sides of each muffin cup. ––Combine the eggs, milk, and the salt in a large bowl. Whisk well. Set aside. ––Place one tablespoon of cheese into each mini muffin cup. Evenly divide the meats and or veggies among the cups. ––Pour egg mixture on top, leaving about ¼ inch of space for rising. ––Bake at 375 degrees until golden brown, about 25 to 30 minutes. Cool slightly and serve warm.
