unning a photo contest is a little like throwing a party. You know it’s going to be fun, but that sinking feeling that no one will show up makes the first part pretty rough. When we first announced this year’s Kids of Summer contest, and I was in said moment of sinking feeling that no one would enter, I started digging through my pictures to find some cute ones of the kids to get the ball rolling. Turns out I didn’t have to, because you all jumped right into submitting your kids’ great pictures, but I enjoyed taking a trip down memory lane in the process. The picture I had in mind (pictured above for good measure) was taken outside after an excellent family dinner on Kent Island. The girls were having a grand time being goofy and I just so happened to have the good camera with me. In my mind, we had gone last summer. But as I scrolled through my pictures, I came to find it was three summers ago. How that happened I’m not sure, but it was a great reminder of a few things. First, I need to look at my pictures more often. Second, I need to take more pictures, because the kids grow so incredibly fast. And third, I need to make going out and doing things as a family a bigger priority. We don’t have to spend the money for a long, fancy vacation to make great memories; fun can be had by just

going for a hike together, a picnic at the local beach park or a daytrip to a nearby town for window shopping and ice cream. That said, we’ve got a lot of cool options for family getaways this month. First up is of the big vacation sort, you’ll find mountain resorts where families can hike, bike, swim and mountain climb together (see page 17). Then we move on to daytripping the quintessential Eastern Shore towns Rock Hall, Easton and St. Michaels (page 20). At each of these stops you can introduce the family to tiny main streets with cool shops, interesting museums and theaters, and ice cream. If you need shorter outings, consider heading to Columbia for its annual Festival of the Arts (page 24), where you can add some culture to the family routine, with everything from internationally renowned shows to family fun nights at the lakefront. Whatever you and yours do this summer, we hope you have a great time. And don’t forget to take pictures!

Summer is Here!

O

kay, technically summer doesn’t start until June 21, (or at least until all the schools are out), but we’re jumping on the summer bandwagon early. Starting May 29, we’ll be bringing you our annual 100 Days of Summer campaign, which will run through Labor Day Weekend. Each day you’ll find something new on our website to entice you to get out and enjoy summer in new and adventurous ways. We hope our ideas challenge you to get out of your routine summer days—whether that’s long days at the pool, or lazy days at home in the air conditioning—and get out and discover the amazing amount of cool things to do in our area. If you’re an outdoor family, 100 Days of Summer will have you itching to get out and hike, bike and hit up some waterfalls at places like Matapeake State Park, the Billy Goat Trail and Cascade Falls. For the families who love to learn together, we’ll entice you with historic treats like Fort McHenry, Mount Vernon and the Baltimore Street Car Museum. We’ll also introduce you to playgrounds, indoor play places and awesome parks that you might not know about, and keep you up to date on local deals like $1 movies and free festivals. So get ready to make this the best summer ever. Just head on over to chesapeakefamily.com/100-days-of-summer to follow along.

The Land of Fire and Ice

P

ort Discovery’s new dinosaur exhibit will let your kids go face-to-face with the prehistoric world and meet dinosaurs of all shapes and sizes. This summer, take a break from the heat and let your kids get their dinosaur fix at Port Discovery Children’s Museum in Baltimore at the new "Dinosaurs: The Land of Fire and Ice" exhibit. The hands-on exhibit, produced by the Minnesota Children’s Museum, features dinos from the Cretaceous Period (145–65 million years ago), the time when dinosaurs last lived on Earth. In the Land of Fire, you’ll be able to get up close to realistic sculptures of the T-Rex and Triceratops, designed with colors and textures consistent with the most current scientific research. Kids can crawl through a volcano and through a squishy bog that resembles a forest floor. In the Land of Ice, explore the Cretaceous landscape of present day Alaska to learn about dinosaurs that roamed in icy climes, including the Edmontosaurus and Troodon. Kids can also learn about the dinosaur food chain and climb in and around a frozen dinosaur habitat. At the Field Research Station, kids can play with archaeology tools, dig for dinosaur fossils, and learn about the ecosystem of the earth over the past 30 million years. There’s also an oversize dinosaur puzzle, play tables, fossil rubbing and tracing stations and drawing activities. "Dinosaurs: The Land of Fire and Ice" will be open at Port Discovery May 26 through September 9. portdiscovery.org

A Riveting Performance

St. Martin’s Lutheran School in Annapolis sent its all-girl robotics team to the Vex Robotics World Championship in Louisville, Ky. The middle school girls, who call themselves the “Riveters,” finished in top 25 at the state competition, earning them the right to head to Louisville for the worlds. There they competed against 398 teams, and ended the competition ranked 52. The Riveters faced international teams hailing from London, Hong Kong, Mexico, South Korea, Australia, Paraguay, China, Ethiopia and around the U.S. The Vex-IQ Challenge offered a three-tiered challenge—a Teamwork Challenge to work with opposing teams to score points, Driving Skills matches, in which robots were directed by a video-game type controller, and a Robot Skills Challenge, in which participants had the challenge of just 60 seconds of programming time to direct a robot to earn points. Students will be eligible if they’ve graduated from high school (or completed a GED program) within the past two years and earned a GPA of 2.3 or higher. Recipients must also work in Maryland for one year for each year of scholarship awarded. Students will need to apply annually to the Maryland Higher Education Commission. Dining out When Your Family Has Food Allergies

"F

or want of a nail, a shoe was lost.” For Paul Antico, the old proverb went the other way. For want of a restaurant with allergy-friendly options for his family, AllergyEats was born. Paul Antico is the father of five children, three of whom have food allergies. Twenty-year-old Tucker has a tree nut allergy; 16-year-old Keegan is allergic to tree nuts, sesame and dairy (and also has eosinophilic esophagitis, an autoimmune disease in which, as a reaction to certain foods or allergens or to acid reflux, a white blood cell known as eosinophil builds up in the lining of the esophagus and can inflame or injure the esophageal tissue); and eight-year-old Bree, Antico’s youngest child, is allergic to egg.“AllergyEats really came about from our own frustrations with dining out and, frankly, the time it would take to find restaurants that really understood food allergies,” says Antico, who lives in Cohasset, Mass. The scope of the situation started to sink in for Antico one weekend in 2006 when his wife went away with their daughter Ashley on a

You can help! AllergyEats is always looking for restaurant reviews from families with food-allergies and sensitivities. If you would like to share a review about a restaurant you have visited— good experience or bad—go to AllergyEats.com or download the mobile app.

trip, leaving him at home with Tucker and Keegan. “We went to eat out on Saturday night because my cooking is limited to breakfast,” Antico confesses. “All the places we usually [went to] that I knew we were comfortable with had long waits. We ended up driving around for two hours, the kids were so upset and hungry, and I’m frustrated because I just didn’t know where to go. We ended up at a small pizza joint that had egg-free pasta. I just kept thinking as I drove, ‘I wish there was a guide.’ ” For Antico, this was no idle wish. When he left his job as a financial analyst two years later, looking for a new direction and to de-stress, he began planning AllergyEats in earnest and, in early 2010, officially launched it. Today, AllergyEats is the largest online guide to allergy-friendly restaurants nationwide. The website and mobile app encompass large restaurant chains, small diners and everything in between. Users can search for restaurants by specific food allergy or intolerance and location; AllergyEats also provides live links to restaurant websites, online menus, restaurant ratings, a “Food for Thought” blog, and even a Disney World specific dining guide. “My goal is to alleviate a bit of the stress that often accompanies food allergies,” Antico writes on the site. “It will mean a lot to me if I can help a child enjoy a special birthday dinner in a restaurant, rather than just another hot dog somewhere easy.” —Joyce Heid

Turn down the Juice

J

uice boxes are a staple in children’s lunches and summer coolers. While they might seem like a healthy alternative to soda, the American Academy of Pediatrics disagrees. The study, “Sugar-Sweetened Beverages and Weight Gain in 2to 5-Year-Old Children,” published by the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2013, found that fourand five-year-olds who drank one or more sugar-sweetened beverages a day were more likely to be overweight or obese. According to a study from the Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity at the University of Connecticut published in 2015, many parents mistakenly believe that some fruit drinks, sports drinks and flavored water are a healthy

option, basing their belief on the claims found on product packaging. About one-third of those surveyed reported that on-package claims were important in their purchase decisions, citing the influence of phrasing such as “real” or “natural.” Indicators that the product was low in calories or sodium often swayed their decision to purchase. This type of labeling can be misleading as many of these “healthy” options are often high in sugar and calories. So, how do you find a healthy alternative to a favorite sugary drink? The Better Beverage Finder, betterbeveragefinder.org, is here to help. The site was created by the grass roots organization, Better Choices

Coalition, which launched the site as part of its Howard County Unsweetened campaign. The Better Beverage Finder offers families the opportunity to browse drink options, find out what is unhealthy, and identifies over 300 healthy alternatives and where to find them. It lists everything from dairy drinks and fruit juices to flavored waters with a user-friendly search option and easy to understand ranking system. Childhood obesity puts children at risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, cardio-vascular disease, poor-self esteem and depression. Making smart choices for your child and teaching him how to make good choices can have a positive effect on his health now and through adulthood.

They’ll graduate before you know it... NOW IS THE TIME. Provide your child with an academically excellent education in a socially and spiritually safe environment.

Well, it is, and you can stay there. Just twenty minutes from Blacksburg, Virginia and Virginia Tech, lies the Mountain Lake Lodge. Built in 1936, the secluded mountain resort looks much the same as it did in the movie. You can stay in the main stone lodge where rooms lack televisions so families can reconnect without distraction, or book one of the front lawn cabins, like the Virginia Cottage, also known as ‘Baby’s Cabin.’ The hotel offers 23 miles of hiking and biking trails and an adventure center with an extensive zip line course. Farm-to-table cuisine reigns at Harvest, the resort’s acclaimed restaurant. Or you can unwind at the Tavern, a casual restaurant with a cozy stone fireplace. For true movie buffs, visit during one of the resort’s four-times-a-year “Dirty Dancing Weekends” when the hotel is transformed into Kellerman’s, movie scenes are reenacted by professional dancers, ballroom dancing lessons are offered, and the film is screened round the clock. 115 Hotel Circle, Pembroke, Va. 540-626-7121 mtnlakelodge.com Rates from $150

The Homestead Established in 1766 as a wooden hotel for homesteaders, the Homestead is known as ‘America’s First Resort.’ The Homestead has hosted 23 U.S. presidents, including Thomas Jefferson, who was drawn to the area’s natural hot springs. Today, the Homestead is a grand resort with 483 rooms and suites and a world-class spa with the same natural hot springs that first lured our nation’s founders. Take a hike on the cascades trail through the Allegheny Mountains past a series of waterfalls or learn the ancient sport of falconry. Spend the afternoon fly-fishing with an Orvis-trained guide or take a horse-drawn carriage ride up the mountain. The resort’s impressive pool complex promises hours of refreshment along with the hotel’s historic indoor pool (built in 1904), fed by naturally warm mineral water. The main dining room with live music offers fine dining with a nostalgic air, while casual options like Martha’s Market and Sam Snead’s Tavern have everything from sandwiches to ribs for the hungry family after a day spent exploring the mountain. 7696 Sam Snead Highway, Hot Springs, Va. 800-838-1766 omnihotels.com/hotels/homestead-virginia Rates from $175

Skytop Lodge Skytop Lodge in the Pocono Mountains has been operating since 1928. Nestled at the base of the West Mountain, the Dutch Colonial style manor house overlooks pristine Skytop Lake. The Manor House has 124 recently renovated rooms and there are 12 four-bedroom cottages on the property. Dining is a treat at Skytop— from the casual Lakeview restaurant to the nostalgic Tea Room, designed to resemble a corner drugstore. Families can swim in the lake or in the indoor or outdoor pools, or spend a day canoeing, hiking, skeet shooting or golfing. Challenge your crew to a game of archery tag, a family-friendly game with foam-tipped arrows. No visit to Skytop would be complete without participating in the resort’s signature ‘Grand March,’ during which guests parade through the hotel to the live music of the Doug Smith Orchestra, a tradition dating back to the 1940s. hen the summer heats up and it’s time to pack up the family and head for waterfront breezes, skip Ocean City and shorten your travels by heading to Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The slower pace, welcoming atmosphere, and family-friendly, authentic vibes of Rock Hall, Easton and St. Michaels make

them ideal getaways for daytrips or weekend excursions, whether you arrive by car or boat.

Waterman ’s C rab Ho u se With large decks overlooking Rock Hall harbor, this classic Eastern Shore crabhouse is just the place to belly up to a picnic table overflowing with Old Bay covered blue crabs, steamed corn, all the other fixings of a summertime feast. This family-friendly spot frequently has live music and lively atmosphere, and if that doesn’t bring a smile to some of the little faces in the group, the towering classic sundae definitely will. 410639-2261; facebook.com/ Watermans-Crab-House-196640147050127

With its original soda fountain, turn-of-thecentury décor, and wide assortment of ice cream and sorbet flavors, it’s sure to be a family favorite. Don’t miss checking out the original wooden phone booth or the old-school candy counter for its Charlie and the Chocolate Factory feel. 410-639-7611; rockhallmd.com/business-directory/ durdings-store

Eastern Neck is federally managed and open to the public. The trails are easy to walk and provide plenty of great opportunities to watch eagles, osprey, turtles, turkeys, and other native critters, and the island’s interpretive center is the perfect place to start. Summertime visitors will enjoy the Butterfly Garden or the Tidal Marsh Overlook trail, with a boardwalk

Rock Hall This watermen’s community is built around a busy harbor full of workboats and pleasure craft, and you can’t throw a rock without hitting a great place to order up some steamed Chesapeake Bay blue crabs. The town proper features a charming, walkable main street with Victorian storefronts, coffee shops, and restaurants that offer plenty of places to pick up souvenirs or fortify the family with a hand-dipped ice-cream cone. DEstination: philly

Sometimes, you just need to get away. Philadelphia offers art, culture, history, great food, romantic parks and gorgeous city vistas.

M

y inbox was overflowing. My husband’s work seemed to be never-ending. School events in April and May came crashing down on us. Home repairs loomed, as did 12 weeks of summer with two tweens. I was one

moment short of tapping out. And then I heard the wonderful words: “Let’s get away, just you and me.” But where to? We could only spare a long weekend, had to stay close to the children, and we needed things to do that we both enjoyed and that would take our hearts and minds off our everyday dramas. Romance and good food were also high on the list. A field trip to Philly fit the bill! Philadelphia is often overlooked as a cultured city and a romantic destination. But whether you are seeking quiet strolls through leafy parks and long afternoons exploring Monet and Tiffany, or if
