Fall Survival Guide Don't miss a thing this fall! ChesapeakeFamily.com

Costume Fun

I

am not a crafty person. If I didn’t have kids in the house, it would be devoid of all glitter, glitter glue, glue guns, fancy paper or anything but a worn down pair of scissors I bought from the grocery store. That is, until Halloween rolls around and I can let loose on a good costume. It’s the one time of year I feel compelled to make something creative. I had fallen out of the habit in the several years before we had kids, most likely because my Dad died, and he and I had always bonded over making my costumes together. He made me quite a few stunners while I was growing up, including the year he turned me into a giant cereal box. But my love for a homemade costume has been revived now that the girls are old enough to help come up with ideas and we can work on the costumes together. Last year I was particularly proud of the hedgehog costume Penny and I created. It wasn’t the best costume in the world, but she loved it and was proud that we had made it ourselves. Audrey wanted to be UniKitty from the LEGO Movie and fortunately John took the lead on that one and we ended up with two awesome costumes for the girls.

If making your own costumes isn’t your cup of tea, that’s all well and good. I think each of us has our own favorite part of fall, be it costume making, haunted houses, fall festivals or just being outside on a crisp fall day. And in this issue, we’ve got a lot covered in that department with spooky adult events like zombie runs (page 32) and haunted pub crawls (page 21), and fun for kids including the best local apple picking spots (page 24) and the lowdown on the Harry Potter Festival in Chestertown. And of course, we’ve got our house favorite, the Fall Photo Contest winners to remind us what fall’s all about. If you need more fall fun, make sure to head to ChesapeakeFamily.com, where we have listed the best family fall fun spots, from corn mazes to pumpkin patches and family-friendly haunted houses! Here’s hoping your favorite fall activity is the best it can be this year!

Q

Ask Dr. Bross

Why should we treat cavities in baby teeth and why is it best to have it done as early as possible after diagnosis?

A

A cavity is a collection of “bad” bacteria. The longer the cavity goes untreated, there will be more of these negative bacteria and as the cavity progresses, the types of bacteria shift to incorporate even worse ones. This is the point at which the balance changes in the entire mouth towards increased “cavity forming” colonies of bacteria. So, any time we fix a cavity we are reducing the number of negative bacteria in the mouth and lowering the risk for all the other teeth, including any permanent teeth that are present! Welcome Back, Potter

he Harry Potter Festival in Chestertown celebrates all things wizard for the fifth straight year. Chestertown is a charming small town on Maryland’s upper Eastern Shore that is always a treat to visit. But come the first weekend of October, it transforms into an even more magical place during its annual Harry Potter Festival. So, grab your broomsticks (really—there’s a Quidditch tournament!), polish your wands and apparate over to the shore to celebrate your favorite wizarding world. Events are geared toward the whole family and include Potter Paint Parties, Magical Creature Habitat

workshops, an enchanted high tea, and a trivia party. Outside you’ll find both a Quidditch pitch and a Kidditch pitch for the little ones. Cosplay is encouraged and will help you and your family get in the mood as you complete a townwide scavenger hunt, stop at the Goblins and Galleons interactive wizard bank, take in a Harry Potter movie screening, and head to the pub for a round of Butterbeer. There is no festival admission fee, though some special events require paid tickets, including the kick-off party on Friday night at the Prince Theatre (6–9 p.m.). The Haunted House of Addictions

T

is the season for haunted houses and scary things that go bump in the night. Most haunted houses depict fictional terrors, but Northeast High School hosts an event showcasing the true life horror of addiction. The Haunted House of Addictions, now in its second year, is hosted the high school’s Signature Program in partnership with the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office. The event teaches parents and teenagers how to spot the telltale signs of drug use in their family and friends, while vividly demonstrating the consequences of using. According to State’s Attorney Wes Adams, “Our partnership allows us to engage in the preventive education I believe is necessary to bring an end to the opioid epidemic.” Brandi Dorsey, the facilitator for Northeast High’s Human Performance Signature Program, coordinates the event with the help of community and business partners. However, she says it’s the students who have embraced this unique opportunity to bring awareness to the community about the dangers of drugs and the devastation that addiction brings. “Last year as part of the signature program the students were community mapping,” Dorsey says. “They looked at the data of Pasadena relating to the opioid crisis and thought, ‘What is something we can provide for the community to be proactive?’ and we came up with the Haunted House of Addictions. It is an educational opportunity for parents and students to learn about the reality of addiction.” As of September 7, 2018 the Anne Arundel County Health Department reports that since January 1, there have been 758 opioid related overdoses in the county,

8

chesapeakefamily.com

|

OCTOBER 2018

126 of which were fatal. It is important to note that the numbers are most likely much higher since not all overdoses are reported. Pasadena, the home to Northeast High School, has a higher than average rate of opioid overdose compared to many other areas of the county. As visitors pass through the haunted house, the opioid crisis plays out in five scenes portrayed by student actors. You also visit a drug house and a teen addict’s bedroom to learn how easily drugs can be hidden in plain sight, and which items you can find in a typical middle class suburban home—such as white vinegar and Q-tips—that are used by addicts. A funeral scene, complete with a student actor in the coffin, depicts the deadly consequences of addiction. State’s Attorney Wes Adams participates in a mock court setting where a student actor is given the choice of jail or a treatment program. And a mother from the Pasadena community shares the heart rending true story of how she lost not one, but two sons to overdose. Logan Farmer, a senior at the high school, is one of 30 Northeast students who participated in the program last year. He helped plan the event and portrayed an addict in one of the scenes. “I learned about real issues our community is facing,” he says. “I love the Haunted House of Addictions because I felt as though we were creating awareness to parents and students.” Farmer’s role as an addict gave him a front row seat to the impact of the evening, “I saw many students leave crying and they said it was extremely powerful. I am really looking forward to this year’s event!” The Haunted House of Addictions takes place on October 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. It is recommended that you arrive early; last year approximately 100 people were turned away. Patrons can start to line up at 4:30 p.m., and the tour lasts approximately 25 minutes. In addition to the tour, several resources providing information on treatment programs and recovery will be on site. Due to the intense nature of the event, no one under 12 will be admitted, even with a parent. Coinciding with the Haunted House of Addictions is the Northeast Trunk or Treat event. This is the third year for the Trunk or Treat and last year over 3,000 people attended. All ages are welcome to attend. There will be over 100 student organizations and businesses from the community who will be giving out goodies, as well as several food trucks. Northeast High School is located at 1121 Duvall Highway in Pasadena. For more information about the event contact Brandi Dorsey at bldorsey@aacps.org.

Getting into Government

I

f your high school student is excited by politics and government and would like the chance to see how laws are made, encourage them to check out the Maryland General Assembly Student Page Program. Open to high school seniors, the program provides students the opportunity to serve in Maryland’s House of Delegates or Senate. Annually, 105 pages and 36 alternates are selected from across the state to represent their schools and counties in Annapolis while the General Assembly is in session, which runs from the second week in January to early April. Each page serves two non-consecutive weeks. Typical duties of a page include keeping up-to-date the General Assembly members’ bill books, distributing materials and delivering messages to members, as well as running errands, answering the phone, and assisting visitors. Each page is paid a stipend of $55 per day to cover expenses. Lodging and meals are not included. Last winter, Dylan Heid served as a page during his senior year at Archbishop Spalding High School. During his service, in addition to their official duties, pages were treated to tours of the State House and the Governor’s mansion, and also had the opportunity to attend bill hearings. Heid encourages others with an interest in the legislature to apply, saying, “It was a unique opportunity to get firsthand experience at the policymaking process, and a great way to meet your state’s representatives.” Applicants must apply between mid September and mid October (Anne Arundel County’s deadline is Oct. 12). Selections are made by a county page coordinator after reviewing students’ applications and conducting personal interviews. For more information, visit dls.maryland. gov/careers/student-page-program. —Matt Heid

Teacher$: Not doing it for the money By Ann Levelle & Donna Jefferson

T

here is no denying that teachers can have a dramatic impact on our children. We depend on them to educate and nurture our future leaders, but are we taking good care of our teachers? The Maryland school system was ranked number one in the nation by Education Week magazine for five years in a row (2008–2012) but has since been in a slow decline. In early 2018 Education Week’s ranked Maryland number six. Much of the decline has to do with decreased funding levels, although during the 2018 Maryland Legislative Session, Governor Hogan boasted, “In this budget, we put a record $6.5 billion into K-12 education, which is above and beyond the spending formula being proposed by Legislature.” Yet teachers struggle to pay their bills. They are taking part-time jobs at Starbucks and Whole Foods, or as summer camp counselors or tutors. According to the Maryland State Education Association, some 40 percent of teachers have a second job. After this year’s teacher strikes in West Virginia and Oklahoma, teachers are speaking up all over the country, asking their local legislators to fund the budgets for teachers according to what they’re worth. So, we decided to take a look at the state of affairs in Maryland, specifically in our main readership area— Anne Arundel, Howard, Prince George’s, Calvert and Queen Anne’s counties—to find out how much money these counties are spending on students, what teachers are making, how counties appropriate their resources on education, and how teachers’ pay stacks up with comparable jobs.

Your Schools, Your Vote

n Maryland, school systems are funded differently by county (the following is how Anne Arundel County approves a budget), but the gist is the same, with each person or group reviewing, making changes to and submitting to the next department: The Superintendent to the Board of Education; the Board to the County Executive; County Executive to the County Council; County Council to the County Executive and back to the Board of Education, which adopts the final budget. Why is this important? Well, it all comes down to your vote. It’s important to pay attention to the election of your board of education, county executive, and county councils. If you’re inclined to vote with the teachers, head to mdappleballot.com to see teachers’ recommendations in your county. For general voting information, visit elections.maryland.gov. There you’ll also find information on Ballot Item 1, aka the Fix the Fund (the teacher’s union is for Yes), which is a constitutional amendment aimed at ensuring funds from Maryland casinos be dedicated to public education. It will also be a hot topic at the polls in Maryland this November.

t was a dark and steamy night, still nearly 90 degrees as the sun went down. Standing outside St. Anne’s Church in Annapolis with my friend

and editor, Ann, the only chill we felt was the one going down our spines as we listened to our guide Shaun tell us tales of the graveyard and ghosts in the fountain on Church Circle. We had booked ourselves on a Haunted Pub Crawl offered by Annapolis Tours & Crawls to kick off fall. We met at the Maryland Inn and spent the next two hours walking around Annapolis, stopping for pints along the way, and learning a whole new side of this city’s history. . . . Did you know that the Maryland Inn is the oldest working hotel in Maryland and that a widowed bride haunts the 4th floor? As we sat in the Drummers Lot, Maryland Inn's basement pub, with a cool pint in hand, we were treated to the story of said bride and why (and how) she makes her presence known. I am not usually a fan of scary movies or Stephen King novels but hearing tales about ghosts and seeing the places they haunt, was great fun and the perfect amount of spooky. On the tour, we were told that one of the bathrooms in the Maryland Inn had some paranormal activity and I will fully admit I kept my eyes wide open and my wits about me while I was in there. If there was a ghost in there, I was ready to meet it! And that feeling continued throughout the

Head out to your nearest orchard for delicious apples and fall treats. by Ann Levelle

V

isiting local apple orchards is a family rite of fall, and one you can enjoy long after you visit with all of the delicious pies, ciders and treats you can make with your harvest. So, pack up for a daytrip this fall to an orchard near you. Apple crop seasons vary but are

generally September through October in Maryland. Apples will store well and can be eaten in a variety of ways—

fresh, cooked, frozen, canned—and made into many tasty desserts! Call before heading out to a farm to check for picking schedules and availability. Then grab a basket and get to picking your own apples for lots of family fun and great memories at these Maryland Orchards.
