hether it’s packing backpack kits for less fortunate children, making dinners for the homeless, working with animals who need homes or even taking tickets at an event, people who spend their free time volunteering amaze me. Spending precious free time working to help others shows that our community is a compassionate one. In November, there are a great many ways to help out your community by giving back. We’re saluting that effort in this issue with several stories. The first, on page 12, is a tribute to both military families and the civilian community that supports them. Because while it’s important to support our troops who are deployed, we can’t forget about their families back home who are keeping the home fires burning, and making do while dad or mom is half a world away. Next we get to our amazing group of Standout Students! This group of exceptional teenagers has spent thousands of hours in the community volunteering with those less fortunate, younger students, and for nonprofit groups. They’ve donated time and effort to make life better for others and are leading the

charge in making the world a better place. We are incredibly impressed with every one of them, and are so excited to share their stories with you. You can read about them starting on page 16, and more in depth on our website, at ChesapeakeFamily.com/standoutstudents. There you’ll also find short videos of each student talking about their accomplishments and what motivates them. We are sure you’ll be inspired by them as we were. Finally, we have a way for you to volunteer as the holiday season heats up. Learn about the Angel Tree project on page 11, which gives holiday shoppers a chance to give a child what he or she needs for Christmas. Keep an eye out on our website and on Facebook through November and December, where we’ll be sharing other ways to volunteer during Thanksgiving and the holidays. We hope these stories will encourage you to make a difference in your community this holiday season.

A Backyard Diagon Alley

fter reading some of the Harry Potter series and watching the movies, Vivienne Nevitt decided she wanted her 6th birthday party to be a Harry Potter theme. This is not uncommon, of course, but what her parents did next was anything but. Her mom, Katherine Patsas Nevitt, who is used to planning and staging parties, thought “we’ll do a Diagon Alley!” And the rest is history. “It wasn’t originally planned to be this big,” says Katherine, “but I started thinking on it and I convinced my husband to get on board with it and we started to gather junk, basically.”

The Nevitts used their utility trailer and started searching for some pallets and plywood, and other free furnishings and things that quickly evolved into building Diagon Alley shops. Over the course of a month they built a small village, complete with Madame Malkin’s Robe shop, Flourish and Blotts Bookseller, Ollivander’s Wand Shop and Mr. Mulpepper’s Apothecary. The floors and all the walls are made from free pallets and plywood, as well as china cabinets repurposed to look like windows. “And I hand-painted all the stone and details so it looked real,” says Katherine, who was an art major in college, though she decided to pursue a law degree.

What can I find in that junk pile? We were able to find bookcases, china cabinets, pieces that nobody wants anymore. The only thing we spent money on were a few trim pieces, nails and paint.” Their kids, Vivienne 6, Victoria 5, and Thomas, 1, love to dress up in Harry Potter garb, make potions in old bottles in the apothecary, and hide in the magic cabinet in the robe shop. Vivienne’s birthday party was a raging success, and she was able to share her magical

Diagon Alley with all of her Girl Scout troop, school friends and neighbors. The Nevitts hope they can share their creation by renting it out for small kids’ birthday parties or photo shoots, or charity events—though they’re still trying to iron out details. “We just want the community to enjoy it,” says Katherine. Meanwhile, the family, along with Katherine’s friend, photographer Bridget Slack, hosted a photo shoot for local kids as a fundraiser for victims of Hurricane Florence. According to Slack, “We raised over $1,350, and sent a trunkful of gift cards and donations to North Carolina.” You can follow the family’s Diagon Alley adventures on Facebook @diagonalleygambrills or check out their website, nevittcreative.com. —Ann Levelle

Making the Kids Table Cool Again at Thanksgiving

I

am the youngest child in my immediate family but older than all my cousins in my extended family, yet I don't recall a

Thanksgiving dinner that I didn't sit at the kids table until after I got married at 26 years old. Every turkey day I remember my Aunt Jackie having activities for us to do. From art projects to games, she made sure we were entertained. A lot has changed over the years, including kids bringing their cellphones to family functions and not interacting much with relatives. Nothing is a bigger bummer than sitting at a table with people you see once or twice a year and everyone is more into their phone than the food and company surrounding them. So, this year, tell everyone to leave their

messages like, “I am thankful for . . .“ and have them fill in the blank. Leave out some markers or crayons so the kids can write, draw, or play games on the table. Watch everyone’s imagination unfold. Get Cookie Crazy I don't know many kids who don't love cookies, no matter what their age. “PICU Connect” Allows Family Members to Interact with Loved Ones in Intensive Care

ost of us are familiar with video calls on our phones and laptops. The technology has connected kids at college to parents in other states, and allowed service members serving overseas to stay in touch with family. Recently, the doctors at the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital created their own version, PICU Connect, to allow families with a child in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) to interact with their child and the medical team when they can’t be there in person. “You simply can’t do pediatric care without having the parents there,” says Jason Custer, M.D., director of patient safety at UMMC and medical director of the PICU. Custer came up with the idea for PICU Connect two years ago after talking with faculty and staff about perceived barriers to having families participate in rounds on the hospital unit. “Providing parents with a convenient way to ‘facetime’ their kids seemed like a way to alleviate some of their anxiety,” says Dr. Custer, who is also an associate professor of pediatrics at the

University of Maryland School of Medicine. After researching existing technologies and not finding something compatible for their needs, Dr. Custer, along with Shari Simone, DNP, CPNP-AC, and his team, decided to create their own. The team approached the telemedicine department at UMMC and shared their vision for a HIPAAcompliant video communication device. The telemedicine team confirmed the technology could be built in-house and would cost about $6,000. The team used funds raised through its annual golf tournament to cover the cost of PICU Connect. For one local family, the technology has provided much-needed comfort. Last March, Courtney Agnoli was on her way to the hospital to be with her newborn, Tessa, who has congenital heart disease. A late-season snowstorm had dumped several inches of snow across Maryland, making driving conditions hazardous. “My car slid on Route 795 and I remember thinking it wasn’t safe to drive, so I turned around and went back home,” says Agnoli. It was the first day since

Tessa was born that her mother did not make it to the hospital. Agnoli couldn’t physically be with Tessa that day, so the medical team offered the next best thing. After downloading Zoom, a free video conferencing app, to her phone and inputting a one-time access code, Agnoli “joined” her daughter and the medical team via a secure, private connection. “It was awesome. We could hear each other clearly and I could see everything in the room,” says Agnoli. “We are just scratching the surface,” says Dr. Custer. “Right now it’s about communication, but it could eventually be used to bring the family in for sterile medical procedures when it isn’t possible to have them physically in the room. As a dad myself, this is something I would want my hospital to do. ” Since March, PICU Connect has expanded to other areas of the hospital and is now offered in the adult ICU. The Kamryn Lambert Foundation, a local nonprofit that supports UMCH, has provided funding for another PICU Connect machine. Plans are underway to expand it to all 11 of UMMC’s ICUs.

hen you are out and about starting your holiday shopping, perhaps put an extra present or two on the list to help a child in need. Angel Tree, an assistance program of the Salvation Army of Central Maryland, provides an opportunity for your family to be an angel to a local child, making the holidays just a little brighter. “Some parents have to sacrifice paying for essentials such as food, rent, and utility bills in order to provide their kids with Christmas gifts,” shares Janeed Johnally, communications director for the Salvation Army of Central Maryland. ”Providing gifts

of new clothing and toys for an “angel,” enables that child to experience the joys of Christmas cheer, despite their family’s financial circumstances.” Thanks to the generosity of individuals, families and businesses throughout Maryland, Angel Tree provides gifts of new clothing and toys to thousands of children, who may not enjoy the holidays otherwise. The organization collects a child’s name, age (up to 12 years old), gender, clothing size and any special needs then writes them on paper angels. The angels are placed on Christmas trees at area malls throughout Maryland, allowing shoppers to pick an angel and then purchase new age- and gender-appropriate toys, clothing, and/or special needs items as listed on the coded section of the tag. Donors then return the unwrapped gifts with the coded section of the tag attached to the item to the designated location at the mall. If a mall is not on your holiday shopping to-do list, you can also participate online. You simply fill out an online form, choosing a child based on gender and age. Then print your angel tree tag at home. After purchasing the gift or gifts, bring your tagged and unwrapped gifts to the drop-off location you selected on the form. Bags and labels will be available when you get there. To ensure the gifts are delivered in time for the holidays, please be sure to return gifts by the final drop-off date indicated online. —Joyce Heid *As of our publication date, each mall had not chosen their program dates. Military Family Month Supporting Those Who Protect Ours

W

hen Robyn Green, director of the Naval Academy Primary School (NAPS) in Annapolis, thinks of the impact civilian families have had on her family’s experience in the military, she says “They have made our journey a remarkable one.” She and husband R.B., a coach with the Naval Academy’s football team, have fielded the challenges that come with military life both before and after welcoming their young twin sons, Grant and Garrison. Although change has been one of the most reliable constants in their lives, it’s been worth it, she says, thanks in part to the camaraderie and support of both the military and civilian community. Whether a service member spends most work days at a desk, is on a third

combat deployment (like R.B. was, prior to having kids), or has long since retired, those who’ve donned a military uniform in any capacity have likely done so with loved ones by their side or in their hearts and minds. Family members may not log the miles or face the risks inherent in serving, but their daily sacrifices are many and often go unseen. November is Military Family Month, and there are a number of ways to show gratitude for those in uniform and their families this holiday season. “Military families are forever blessed and changed by the lives we lead,” Green says. Showing appreciation for their unique lives and lending a hand might just change yours, too. Read on to learn more about how to support the military families in your community.

MILITARY FAMILY LIFE: The day-to-day life of the military family may be a bit of a mystery to civilians. We reached out to a few families to see what means the most coming from the community. AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD Page M.: “I had a neighbor help me with yard work and handyman type jobs. It was such a help when I was solo parenting pregnant with a toddler. Often, he didn’t even ask; I would come home and the trees were trimmed! It was so thoughtful.” Robyn Green: “Civilian Families have been a major help for us. They stepped in to mow the lawn, babysit the kids, give rides to school, make a meal, etc. They have helped to throw welcome home parties and just been there to listen.” MEAL TIME Kate L.: “Invites to dinner meant the most. Especially when (son) L. wasn’t talking yet, dinner was such a quiet, lonely part of the day!” School Robyn Green: “School is different for military kids because their friends, teachers and home environments change frequently. It’s rare to find a military child in one school for more than three years, yet the resilience those students have at their core is amazing!” The Weekends Mary-Blake S.: “The weekends were hardest for me. Getting through the weekdays seemed doable alone, but when the weekend rolled around and everyone else’s spouses were home to hang out and spend time together— that’s when I felt the loneliest. I always appreciated couples and families that included me and my kids in their ‘family time.’ ”

GET INVOLVED Metropolitan WashingtonBaltimore USO The USO at BWI airport provides troops and their families with a comfortable space, food and support. In addition to assisting with a variety of events and helping staff the organization’s center, volunteers can also contribute by stuffing care packages for the USO’s PACK 4 TROOPS program. USO Center Operations Manager Shawn Sabia notes that USO volunteers are an integral piece of the region’s support structure for military families. “Our volunteers are really unique in the nonprofit world,” he says. “They open and close our centers, stay late when a big flight gets stuck at the airport, and help bridge the gap between the American public and service members in our community. It is heartwarming to see volunteers interacting with our military and their families. At first, they may offer a simple cup of coffee, a friendly conversation or resource, but as they become a part of USO-Metro you see them making a real difference in the lives of so many service members.” metro.uso.org/support/volunteer Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs Director of Outreach and Advocacy for the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs Dana Burl says Maryland National Guard soldiers and airmen are

overlooked at times and are very much deserving of support. “These soldiers and airmen continue to deploy overseas and to hostile areas, leaving their civilian jobs and families so that they may serve our state and nation,” she explains. She adds that many work at various levels of government within the state and may be activated to carry out Guard or Reserve duties. Sending care packages or “adopting” a National Guard/Reservist family are two ways of showing support, Burl says. “While deployed, spouses and partners remain to take care of the home and children. Just last year, a private sector employer in Annapolis adopted a Maryland National Guard Unit deployed to Afghanistan, sending care packages for soldiers but also supplies for the schools and hospitals in which they were working,” she says. veterans.maryland.gov Charlotte Hall Veterans Home Burl also recommends donating to veterans and their families at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in St. Mary’s County. It’s “an assisted living and skills nursing home for veterans and their non-remarried spouses,” Burl says. She notes that items often requested are basics as well as underwear, gloves and socks. The home will also accept gift cards to purchase necessities. charhall.org

VA Maryland Health Care System “Each year, there are hundreds of veterans from across the state that will spend their holiday season at one of our three inpatient facilities,” says David Edwards, chief of public and community relations for the VA Maryland Health Care System. “Many of these hospitalized veterans may not have an opportunity to see their family members or friends during this very important time of the year.” Edwards says assistance from the community helps to make the holidays a bit brighter for the system’s inpatients. Making visits, participating in entertainment and activities, gift giving, and sending holiday cards are all ways to connect with veterans and provide a sense of family for those who may be missing it during the holiday season. maryland.va.gov Military Mental Health/ Rehabilitation Initiatives A soldier’s experiences overseas often leaves him or her with physical or emotional injuries. Supporting groups that work to ease service members’ challenges upon return from deployment is another way to assist the military. If you’re interested in offering this type of support, look in to volunteering with organizations such as the Military Veteran Project, Paralyzed Veterans of America, or Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. Runs/Walks Hitting the pavement in honor of or to raise funds for the military is another easy way to show support. A quick search of events in your area should provide a handful of opportunities to participate in a solo or family walk or run. In our area look for Annapolis 9/11 Heroes Run; America’s Adopt A Soldier 5/10k Walk/Run (Northern Va.); Race 4 Heroes, 5K Walk, Run, Roll or Fly (Solomons); Marines Helping Heroes 5K Challenge (Hanover); and Veterans Day 10K & 2M Walk (D.C.).

t is with great pleasure that we introduce our 2018 Standout Students! This inaugural class of impressive teens—students who are nothing short of amazing—prove that your age does not preclude you from being a great leader, motivator, entrepreneur, philanthropist or advocate. Each of these students, who hail from various schools around Anne Arundel and Prince George’s counties, has excellent grades, but, more important a desire to better their communities. Our Standout Students have volunteered a staggering number of hours in the community, making a difference in local

schools, nonprofit groups and elsewhere. One student traveled abroad as a national Teen Ambassador to Brazil, another created her own nonprofit to give clothes to those in need, and one even organized the March for Our Lives in Annapolis last spring. A short profile of each student follows, and you can read more and catch quick videos of each student at ChesapeakeFamily.com/ standoutstudents. We enjoyed meeting each of these students; we were truly impressed with what they’ve accomplished, and they’re all genuinely great kids. We are looking forward to seeing what they accomplish in the future.

In addition to her travel and community service, Arija is a Dean's List student and Merit Scholar at Indian Creek School, Teen President of the Greater Suburban Maryland Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, sophomore class Vice President, and Princeton University Young Leadership Academy Scholar. She is also a dancer with the Capitol Movement Pre-Professional Dance Company.

Nick Vance is a senior at Archbishop Spalding High School. While he enjoys school now, that wasn’t always the case. “When I was in elementary school I dreaded being in the classroom," he says. “Then one summer I went to camp at the Summit School. I felt welcomed and at ease. My parents enrolled me at the Summit School the following year.” Nick thrived at Summit, graduating in June of 2015. Nick continues to feel a strong connection to the school and last year found a way to give back. Last spring, Nick learned of a singer/songwriter named Jesse Ruben. Jesse had written songs about a very challenging period in his life resulting in the We Can Project. Through a series of lectures, group sessions and lessons, the We Can Project helps students develop the mindset that they can do anything they desire while also teaching them about giving back to the community through service. Nick set up a Go Fund Me page to bring Jesse and the We Can Project to Summit. Nick soon raised over $2,000 for Jesse to visit, teach and perform at Summit. At the performance, Nick introduced Jesse, who then sang his songs and told the kids his story of overcoming challenges and working to reach his own goals. After the entire school assembly, Nick and Jesse held individual goal setting activities, encouraging the students to set their own goals.

Addison Shreve

Maggie Crawford

7th Grade, St. Paul’s Lutheran School

12th Grade, Annapolis High School

Addison is an honor student at St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Pasadena. Every morning the 7th grader helps her mother, who works at the school, tend to the preschoolers in the before care program. Addison likes to work with younger children to show all of them that they have a talent—whether it is in dance, drawing, writing, or another way that they haven’t yet discovered. But while Addison enjoys working with children, her true passion is BMX bike racing. Addison has been racing BMX since she was 4, when, after watching her brothers race, wanted to know when she would be allowed to compete. Her father told her she was welcome to try, and as long as she could make it around the track without falling, she could compete. Well, she made it around the track, and it was evident that it’s where she’s meant to be. Addison traveled to the Netherlands to race at age 8. She is now sponsored on the Clayborn/Answer BMX team both because of her skill and her humbleness and representation of her team on and off of the track. She typically spends 5 to 6 days a week training and races nearly every weekend. She enjoys the traveling and will soon be in Tulsa, Ok., for the Grand National Championship weekend, which she has made it to the last eight years running.

Maggie Crawford began volunteering for the Anne Arundel County SPCA in 2015. After a few short months, Maggie combined her two passions, baking and volunteering, and planned and coordinated a bake sale fundraiser for the AACSPCA. Her first bake sale, in January 2016, raised over $200. Since then, Maggie has planned an additional seven bake sales that have raised over $7,000 for the shelter. In addition to bake sales and weekly visits to the shelter to volunteer helping with the animals at the shelter, Maggie created a community outreach program called “Bedtime Book Buddies,” which allows AACSPCA volunteers to read a bedtime stories to the animals at the shelter. The idea became so popular with the volunteers that in 2017 Maggie expanded the program to children in the community. The event is now offered twice monthly to children in the community, and twice monthly to the AACSPCA volunteers. Over her three years at the AACSPCA, Maggie has logged more than 750 hours as a volunteer. Maggie and her mother, Tricia, lead the team of parent/teen volunteers as well as coordinate the bake sales and Book Buddies programs. At school, Maggie is involved in the IB program at Annapolis High, but still shares her dedication, time, and a tremendous love for these animals, who are in greatest need of help.

Jacob Spitzer

Emma Christie

9th Grade, Broadneck High School

7th Grade, Homeschool

Though Jacob Spitzer is just in 9th grade, he has had a storied career as a musician and a Boy Scout. Jacob has been playing bass guitar since he was 7 and has been a member of the rock band Fast as Lightning since he was 9. The band, whose members met at the School of Rock in Annapolis, has played over a 100 gigs, including opening for the popular 90’s band Soul Asylum at the 9:30 Club in Washington D.C. While many of the gigs they land are professional, Jacob and Fast as Lightning have made it a point to play as many charity events as possible to help the community, including for such charities as Walk for Wishes, St. Baldrick’s, SPCA, Walk the Walk, Make a Wish, Wounded Warriors at Walter Reed Medical Center, and Travis Manion Foundation for veterans. Often, the band will donate any tips or proceeds to further the charity’s cause as well. Jacob is not only a rock star and classical viola performer in school orchestras, he also recently become the youngest Eagle Scout in the history of his troop and has achieved his Eagle Scout ranking at the youngest possible age as a Boy Scout.

Emma Christie has been a volunteer at Kinder Farm Park in Severna Park for the past three years and has been an outstanding volunteer. According to Roy Fielder, the Friends of Kinder Farm Park livestock coordinator, “she is a tremendous ambassador for our program and our animals at the park.” Not only does she tend to goats and cows, she milks a cow every day, and she is always willing to explain and teach people about how and where milk comes from. Emma ran the “plant a seed” booth at Kinder Farm’s “Meet The Kids” day last spring. “I am most proud of her for her work with a local elementary school,” Fielder says. During the kids’ visit, she gave a speech to them about the park’s program and animals. She was in contact with school administrators planning her speech but also arranged a tour of the Park for all the children involved in the fundraiser. Emma also spends time working on fundraising for Kinder Farm and for the Pregnancy Clinic in Severna Park. One of her hobbies is making glass-blown pendant creations, and she has sold them as a fundraising effort for the clinic. She also grows her own flowers and sells them to raise funds for the clinic as well.

Mackenzie Boughey

Haley Havard

11th Grade, Severn School

10th Grade, Key School

After hearing about the Parkland students organizing the national “March for Our Lives” in Washington, D.C., Mackenzie Boughey wanted to do something about gun violence, too. So, she founded “March For Our Lives: Annapolis.” Mackenzie organized a group of five other girls to help her with the planning committee. Prior to the march, Mackenzie sent out press releases and met with various members of the media. She attended sign-making events and spread the word throughout the community and on social media. She invited teachers and school employees to come to the march, and invited student government associations from each county. On March 24th, Mackenzie led the rally with opening and closing speeches. She and her friends led the group from Lawyer’s Mall in Annapolis down Main Street to City Dock. There, she and her fellow organizers had set up an opportunity for anyone to speak to the crowd, and they also had a large banner for participants to sign, asking politicians to “Keep our Kids Safe.” Approximately 2,500 people attended the march. Fighting for gun safety has become Mackenzie’s passion, and she continues to find solutions to gun violence and how to make students feel safer in schools. You can follow her fight at facebook.com/MarchForOurLivesAnnapolis.

When Haley Havard was 9, she started asking her mother if she could start a “business to help people.” Her mother made her wait a few years, worried she wouldn’t be able to handle the responsibility. But now, she says, “Boy, was I wrong!” Haley did wait a few years to kick-start her business, and started her nonprofit, Haley’s Helping Hands of Maryland, at the age of 11. Now a sophomore at Key School, Haley provides gently used clothing, shoes and sports equipment to individuals and families in need. Those in need of help can submit requests to Haley through her website, haleyshelpinghandsmd.org. Then Haley ships items for free to those who’ve requested them. To date, she’s raised over $25,000, and in 2017, shipped over 7,000 items to 256 families in 15 different states. Haley also provides sports scholarships to children who would not otherwise be able to participate in community sports. This year Haley also donated school supplies to 75 kids in need of a good start to the school year. “Watching Haley touch the lives of so many while working to balance her life as a kid, her studies and her sports life has been amazing,” says her mom. “She is tenacious beyond words and has a heart filled with compassion and a true desire to give back!”

Leah Winston 9th Grade, Edmund Burke High School

When Leah was in Middle School at School of the Incarnation in Gambrills, she was well known and respected as a leader in the community. She distinguished herself among students and staff as someone who led by example and was willing to stand up for her own values and for other students. While in middle school, Leah suffered three concussions Performing Arts while playing club volleyball, which caused long-term pain and headaches, prohibited her from playing for a season, and ultimately required neurosurgery. Dealing with the physical and emotional pain that accompanied these circumstances would have been good reason for any teenager to feel sorry for themselves, but Leah continued to come to school with a Performing Arts Stars smile on her face, always brightening everyone’s day. Entrepreneurial She has withstood bullies, racial discrimination and health issues, but fights against all of these forces against her, and continues to lead others with her positive attitudes and Performing Arts Stars leadership skills. Her commitment to being a community leader earned Leah the Dr. Barbara McGraw Edmondson Legacy Scholarship, at the end of 7th grade. She also was selected as an "A Better Chance Scholar" to attend the Edmund Burke School in Washington D.C. for high school, where she has already earned a spot on the varsity volleyball team.
