Experience the Holidays
W
e all have our favorite family holiday traditions—whether it’s baking cookies together, a trip to a lights display or a holiday show, a visit with old friends or an ugly sweater party. My favorite traditions from childhood were decorating Christmas cookies and heading to a tree farm to cut down our tree. Now I look forward to doing the same each year with my own family, and have added going to the Parade of Lights in Annapolis as a favorite of the season. I love bundling up the family and lining the shore with what seems like everyone in town, all gathering to cheer on the boats circling the harbor, decked out with amazing lights displays. And the girls love our most recent tradition of going to ICE! at National Harbor (pictured above). Of course, I love watching the girls open their gifts on Christmas morning, but I cherish the memories of our being together on holiday adventures even more. Which is why we added an experiential gift section to our Holiday Gift Guide this year! It includes great ideas for
outings, memberships and other experiences you can give to your family (or ask of the grandparents). You can check out all of our favorite gift ideas starting on page 14, and experiential gifts on page 20. If you’re interested in doing more giving back this holiday season, you’ll be happy to find our Stay Inspired column on page 32, in which we meet a family whose newest tradition is participating in 25 Random Acts of Kindness! It’s a great way to spread the holiday spirit to those around you and teach your children how to be grateful for what they have and generous with what they can give. Wishing you a wonderful, happy and healthy holiday season.

Safe Schools Maryland
n an effort to reduce violence in schools, Governor Larry Hogan has launched the Safe Schools Maryland tip line and mobile app. “Incidents of targeted violence at our schools are rarely sudden impulsive acts; instead, in the majority of these incidents, another person was aware of what the student was thinking or planning to do,” said Governor Hogan at the Maryland Emergency Management Agency in October. “We must remain ever vigilant when it comes to protecting our kids, and we are counting on our local school communities, our students, teachers, and parents to work together with us in these important efforts.” The tip line will be online 24/7 with trained technicians, and the staff will share any information to the appropriate school systems, officials, staff and law enfocement officials to prevent violence in schools from taking place. The Safe Schools mobile app is available for iPhones and Android. The Safe Schools program encourages students, parents, faculty, staff, and members of communities to use the anonymous, app-
and web-based reporting system to share concerns including mental health crises, bullying, school and/or community violence, drug activity, abuse, and harassment. According to Hogan, “Sadly, all too often students, choose to remain silent because they are afraid of retaliation, rejection, or stigmatization by their peers. The troubling result is a ‘code of silence’ in which students suffer harm that could have been prevented if another person had chosen to speak out. We need to empower our students to break that ‘code of silence.” “If they see unsafe situations or behavior, including threats made in person or on social media, bullying, or a friend who expresses the desire to hurt themselves or others,” he said, “we need young Marylanders to say something and to do something without fear of retribution for coming forward.” More details about the app and tip line are available at SafeSchoolsMD.org. The tip line is: 1-833-MD-B-SAFE (1-833-632-7233).

To Cell or Not to Cell
A
s your kids’ wishlists come in for the holidays, it won’t be surprising to see a smartphone on the list. While it’s
pretty easy to say “no” to a seven- or eightyear-old, the difficulty (and peer pressure) ramps up significantly as kids get into tweenhood. It’s easy in theory to practice the “Wait Until 8th” philosophy of waiting to get kids a phone until they’re in 8th grade, but as the kids grow nearer to this benchmark, the old “but everyone else has one” excuse becomes harder and harder to ignore. There is of course, no right answer to when to get your child a phone. Perhaps your nine-year-old is responsible and spends a lot of time at sports practices and life would be easier for everyone if she could text you when she’s ready for a ride home. Or, in an opposite scenario, your 10-year-old is a habitual Fortnight player and homework avoider who could use a break from screen time. Either way, you have to gauge your child’s maturity. Is she responsible, able to resist distractions; is it likely she’d be bullied online? All of these should be factors in your decision-making process. In a 2017 study, “Cell Phone Ownership and Cyberbullying in 8-11 Year Olds: New Research,” researchers found that children between grades 3 and 5 who had cell phones were “significantly more likely to report being a victim of cyberbullying, especially in grades 3 and 4.” In addition to societal pressures, recent studies have shown that our bodies are penetrated by radiation from cell phones. According to the International Agency for the Research on Cancer, “the average radio frequency radiation energy deposition for children exposed to mobile phone RF is two times higher in the brain and 10 times higher in the bone marrow of the skull, compared with mobile phone use by adults.” The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends everyone avoid carrying cell phones against the body, in places such as a bra, sock or pocket. Also to make

only short calls on cell phones and to use speakerphone mode when possible. Check out ehtrust.org for more. Here are some helpful considerations, set forth by Commonsense Media, to help you decide whether to get your kiddo a smartphone this Christmas: • Do your kids show a sense of responsibility, such as letting you know when they leave the house? Do they show up when they say they will? • Do your kids tend to lose things, such as backpacks or homework folders? If so, expect they might lose an (expensive!) phone, too. • Do your kids need to be in touch for safety reasons? • Would having easy access to friends

minutes talked and apps downloaded? • Will they use text, photo, and video functions responsibly and not to embarrass or harass others? If you conclude that your child is ready for a phone, set a budget for a phone, decide whether you want them to have a full-access smartphone or just something they can communicate with you via calls/texts. Finally, once the phone is in place, here are a few more ideas to get you and your child on the same page. Set rules. Consider writing a contract with your child to establish rules you can both agree on. (Google has plenty of templates at the ready.) Set parental controls! The App

Zach Meyer Zach Meyer grew up in Glen Burnie, a few miles from Baltimore/Washington International Airport. But what sparked his interest in flight was a family trip to the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C., when he was four or five years old. “We saw an IMAX movie there called “Straight Up: Helicopters in Action,” and it showcased some of the missions that helicopters and their crews perform every day around the world,” Zach says. “It really caught my attention and is probably one of the biggest reasons why I’ve always wanted to find a career in aviation.” Zach’s dream is coming to fruition through the Professional Pilot-Helicopter Program, part of the Technology, Engineering and Mathematics pathway at the Community College of Baltimore County. The two-year program allows students to earn an associate degree in Aviation Technology, along with a

commercial rotorcraft license. Zach was able to transfer his AP credits from Annapolis Area Christian School, allowing him to spend his first semester in the program focusing on aviation classes such as Private Pilot Ground School and Aviation History. “Hands down, my favorite part of this program is the flight training aspect,” says Zach. “No class can hold a candle to flying helicopters!” Zach was able to start flight training in February, during his second full semester. He was able to earn his Private Rotorcraft License in July and he’s currently about halfway to getting his instrument add-on rating. He is on track to graduate from CCBC in May of 2019 with his associate degree and commercial pilot license. He plans on enlisting in the United States Army and applying to serve as a warrant officer and pilot.
Lauren Tuley Lauren Tuley is a junior at Chesapeake High School. When she is not in school, you’ll likely find her at the airport. “Since my dad is a duty maintenance manager for British Airways, it allows me to travel the world with my family,” Lauren says. “One day I decided the only way to keep that up was to become a pilot. My parents said when you are old enough you can try it, so I am.” The minimum age to obtain a Student Pilot Certificate is 16. Lauren received her certificate in August and is currently working on her private pilot license through the Gleim Online Ground School to prepare for the Private Pilot FAA written exam. The actual flight lessons are through the Chesapeake Sport Pilot, located at the Bay Bridge Airport in Stevensville. “Before I signed up for flight school, I took an introductory flight. I’ve been in the air almost every flight lesson since then.” The online ground school lessons allow Lauren to progress at her own pace, and in the summer she scheduled flight lessons up to four times per week. During the school year she tries to get in the air at least once or twice a week. After high school, Lauren would like to attend Florida Institute of Technology, which has aeronautics and programs with flight school options. She wants to obtain an Airline Transport Pilot License, which requires a minimum of 1,500 hours of flying. “It’s going to be a while. I want to fly long hauls and go places.”

The Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program is a “year-round program where
Cadets fly, learn to lead, hike, camp, get in shape, and push themselves
to new limits.” Civil Air Patrol cadets typically participate in a 2-hour
squadron meeting each week, plus one “Saturday” event monthly and one week-long encampment in summer. mdwg.cap.gov
Nick Novak is a junior at Glen Burnie High School and well on his path to a career in aviation, following in his father’s footsteps as a member of the Civil Air Patrol. “My father has been involved in CAP ever since he was my age. By the time I joined at age sixteen I had a lot of useful prior knowledge,” Nick says. The Civil Air Patrol serves as the official U.S. Air Force Auxiliary and is tasked by with the three main missions: aerospace education, cadet programs, and emergency services, such as search and rescue. Cadets range in age from 12 to 21. Those over 18 have the options such as to fly aircraft on Air Force-assigned missions. Younger cadets can participate in ground search-and-rescue missions. “The cadet Program is based around military drill and discipline and gives cadets many opportunities most other kids don’t have,” Nick says, “such as flying aircraft at the age of twelve. We wear Air Force uniforms and have a rank and promotion structure that is based off of achievements. After high school, Nick hopes to attend the U.S. Naval Academy to study aerospace engineering. “Then my goal is to hopefully receive my commission in the Marine Corps as a fighter pilot or infantry officer,” he says. If he attends a service academy, Nick will remain a cadet until he is 21, striving to attain the highest cadet achievement possible. DECEMBER 2018

It Takes a Sugar Plum Village Students and professional dancers work side by side in Ballet Theatre of Maryland’s annual Nutcracker. By Katrina Atsinger 22

DECEMBER 2018
E
very May, when most thoughts are trained on summer, Ballet Theatre of Maryland and its older students are already thinking about Nutcracker auditions. BTM, Maryland’s premier professional ballet company, pours months of preparation into its annual Nutcracker performance. What makes this production distinctive is the sheer number of children who perform. This year, 52 students, ages 6 to 18, have rehearsed with the company since September so that the professionals and kids can work seamlessly together on stage. What does it take to be one of these kids? Ballet Theatre of Maryland’s older students start rehearsing over the summer.Artistic Director Dianna Cuatto likes to teach the steps to the kids before she brings in her professional dancers. The opening party scene and the fight scene between the mice and soldiers are visual spectacles for the sheer number of children and adults on stage all moving according to precise choreography.
family fun
Early in September, the youngest dancers can audition for smaller roles, including princesses, fairy princesses, cavaliers, and cookies. Rehearsals with the company members begin by mid-September and these rehearsals are scheduled for every weekend. Older students can rehearse up to 12 hours a week and the youngest kids just a few hours before going to the theatre in December for technical and dress rehearsals. Costume fittings also take place in September. Old mouse costumes are aired and stitched up and for a few lucky princesses, new costumes are brought in to refresh supplies. Parents learn how to style dancers’ hair, and get stage makeup tips like how to draw the perfect mouse whiskers. They also commit to volunteering back stage or in the front of house. After rehearsals throughout October and November and a well-earned break for Thanksgiving, it’s all systems go! Dress rehearsals for up to 4 different casts give kids and professionals the opportunity to dance different roles and
even the youngest dancers can be in the theatre until 10 at night. It all sounds exhausting in amongst the holiday rush but if ask any of them if they would rather be doing something else and the answer is “No!” It’s a long Nutcracker season for these kids (and their parents), but their eyes light up when they talk about it, because they are so excited to share what they love with the public and to bring a timeless tradition to life year after year. Trent David, 10, and his sister, Parker, 7, are local kids who auditioned for the first time this year. Trent just went to the audition to keep his sister company and ended up with three roles! Trent says he likes that Cuatto, BTM’s artistic director, works with the children herself and that his role as a cookie strengthens his core and his arms! Trent and Parker’s family has made a trip to the Nutcracker a family tradition for years. They can hardly believe that this year they actually get to be in it. Keep your eye out for Trent as the young cavalier escorting Clara into the
land of sweets, and for Parker—the littlest of the children—beating the complicated rhythm of the Chinese Dance with sticks. The Ballet Theatre of Maryland kicks off its Nutcracker performances December 6 and 13 with two Thursday morning Mini-Shows—performances especially staged for school groups and senior centers held at Maryland Hall For the Creative Arts. At only $10 a ticket, the goal is to introduce Ballet to young children from as many elementary schools in the area as possible. Saturday and Sunday performances (December 8–9; 15–16) bring patrons flooding in to see the full-length ballet. Sunday Matinee patrons are even invited to a Sugar Plum party with holiday treats, crafts, a holiday sing-along and a visit with Santa. For more information about the ballet and to buy tickets, visit balletmaryland.org. For a list of other Nutcracker performances in the area, head to page 29 for a list of local productions.
