I
am all about holiday experiences. While we do splurge on one or two outings, like going to a drive-through lights display and cutting down our own tree (see above), I do my best to celebrate with free (or almost free) things at home like baking and decorating cookies and watching holiday movies together. Fortunately, there are also quite a few free events in Annapolis that we take advantage of each year, including the Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade and Midnight Madness festivities. What I love about Midnight Madness (see page 24) is that it brings the community together, urges local residents to shop in local stores, and it’s just plain fun. It’s also one of the best opportunities to get out and buy from local businesses, which are working hard to stay afloat in the era of Amazon. This December, we have chosen to feature local artisans (including an eight-year-old entrepreneur and jeweler who is making name for herself at local craft shows) because
supporting local businesses is important. Check out our annual Buy Local gift guide on page 10 for local shops and businesses offering fun experiential gifts and locally crafted items. 1. Ice and Fire: A Winter Wonderland
Saturdays, Sundays through Dec. 22. This brand-new holiday festival in Columbia’s Symphony Woods lets families stroll through the Light Forest, get lost in the Light Maze, and be enthralled by the Ice Fairy and her friends as they transform Symphony Woods into a Winter Wonderland. Then wander to the Chrysalis, where you will find a lighted dragon, fire pits, and a make-your-own s’mores station. Plus, you can visit Santa on the Chrysalis stage and marvel at the 30-foot Tree of Light. 2. Eastport Yacht Club Parade of Lights
December 14. A true Annapolis tradition, the Parade of Lights sends delightfully decorated boats parading around Annapolis Harbor, where onlookers line the shores of downtown Annapolis and Eastport. So grab your hats and mittens and find a spot along the water to watch as twinkling boats line the horizon in holiday cheer. 3. Enchant Christmas
Through December 29. Nationals Park will transform into the “World’s Largest Christmas Light Maze and Market,” featuring “largerthan-life light sculptures that take guests on a journey to find Santa’s missing reindeer.” You can also glide along the lighted ice skating trail, stroll through a Christmas Market of more than 60 local artisan vendors, visit with Santa, take the kids to the Kid Zone, and even catch a holiday movie. Dancing with Sugarplums: Unraveling the History of a Holiday Treat
othing welcomes the festive holiday season more than images conjured up by Clement Moore’s c.1823 poem, A Visit from St. Nicholas, especially the line that reads, “the children were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of sugarplums danced in their heads.” A Christmas music playlist is not complete without Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker. Images of sugarplums conjured by these deep-rooted references embedded within the traditions of the festive season lead most people to make the logical assumption that sugarplums were exactly what they sound like they should be, sugar-coated plums; however, they are not. Clearly sugar is needed to make sugarplums. A history of sugar reveals that sugar-based confections did not become popular in the Great Britain or America until the cost of sugar began to decline in the late 16th century, a result of the establishment of sugar-plantations worked by enslaved laborers. Once the cost of sugar was no longer an impediment to people on the lower rungs of the socio-economic ladder, it was
no longer considered to be a luxury item just for the wealthy and became a common ingredient in recipes. As a result, cookery books began to be filled with a variety of recipes for sugar-laden baked goods, main courses, confections, and fruits preserved with sugar. However, in those days neither plums nor any other fruits preserved with sugar were actually referred to as sugarplums. Until the mid 19th century, the term sugarplum usually referred to something completely different: small sugar-coated confections made with boiled sugar that came in a variety of colors and flavors. For example, confections known as comfits were often labeled as sugarplums. Comfits are seeds, spices, and nuts (Jordan almonds) coated in several layers of sugar and finished in a crisp sugar coating dyed in assorted colors or even coated with gold or silver leaf. Moreover, skilled confectioners knew how to alter comfit recipes to achieve a variety of textures yielding smooth pearled comfits or more coarsely finished ragged comfits. Clearly, no plums are used in making these
confections; so, why are they referred to as plums? According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, a plum is defined as “something superior or very desirable; especially something desirable given in return for a favor.” A plum is often understood to be something particularly desirable, such as an advantageous prize, or a sought-after job. Obviously, a lot of people thought that adding a coating of sugar to sugarless snacks made them exceedingly desirable. If you ever find yourself dreaming of sugarplums, now you know what to imagine in those dreams. To make those dreams a reality, try creating your very own gift bags of 21st century-era sugarplums: simply fill a bag with assorted multi-colored Jordan almonds, licorice candies such as Good & Plenty, sugar-coated fennel seeds (available in Indian markets), chocolate-covered nuts, yogurt-covered nuts, sugar-coated sunflower seeds, caramelized nuts, Boston Baked Beans candy, peanut M&Ms, and chocolatecovered raisins, just to name a few. If a Victorian-era Christmas has always been on your wish list, head to Cape May, N.J., where the entire town is transformed into a Dickens’ village. Grand hotels like Congress Hall and the Southern Mansion are draped in their best finery, with candles, greenery and fairy lights decorating the property, while multiple Christmas trees adorn each lobby. On weekends in December, take a candlelight house tour of homes or take a Ghosts of Christmas Past trolley tour. Christmas tours abound as the many historic B&Bs of Cape May open their doors during weekday afternoons for tours. The popular Lamplighter Christmas tour visits four private homes and inns and includes the exhibit “An Old Fashioned Christmas” on display at the historic Emlen Physick Estate. Named ‘Christmas City USA,’ Bethlehem lives up to its moniker. Downtown Bethlehem kicks off the celebration before Thanksgiving with more than 800 lighted Christmas trees, greenery, lights, and a candle in every window—a tradition that is carried throughout the town. Take a Christmas City Stroll with a costumed guide and learn about the history of Bethlehem’s Victorian and colonial architecture, hear the tale of a ‘candle in every window,’ and learn about the Bethlehem star, set high atop South Mountain. A horsedrawn carriage tour will highlight the landmarks of the town or visitors can take an evening bus tour to see the lights, hear about the town’s traditions and visit the Bethlehem star by night. Bethlehem is also home to the nation’s only live Advent calendar, where each day visitors can gather at the historic Goundie House to hear a special guest address a different Christmas topic. Pennsylvania Dutch country knows how to do Christmas right, with dozens of events held during the season in Lancaster. On November 29, the mayor lights the town tree with live music from Tuba Christmas. Santa arrives on a fire truck, and evening hours begin at the Lancaster Central Market. Take a carriage ride through downtown Lancaster or watch the “Miracle of Christmas” show at the Sight and Sounds Theatres. Tour the area’s authentic B&Bs on the ‘Find Your Belsnickle Tour,’ which visits 15 inns decked in their holiday finest. A must-do for families is the historic Strasburg Railroad, which runs special holiday themed train rides throughout the season, such as The Night Before Christmas Train and the Christmas Feast Train. St. Michaels, Md. Known for it’s nautical appeal, St. Michaels is a charming town any time of year, but it really lights up at Christmastime when the streets and shops are bedecked in greenery and twinkling white lights. For 33 years, ‘Christmas is St. Michaels’ has been an annual event that includes a gingerbread house competition, visits with Santa, a tour of homes and holiday music. Enjoy a classic Christmas parade on Talbot Street with a marching band, fire trucks, antique cars and boats, llamas and a horse-drawn carriage. Families can also don a Santa hat and participate in the Santa Dash, a one-mile run that kicks off the parade.
