Pets on the Brain
M
y kids have put in some staunch arguments for getting a pet lately. I keep reminding them that we have two hermit crabs, but somehow that has not swayed them from asking for a dog or cat on a near daily basis. Audrey, who is not one to back down from an argument has her list nailed down to wanting a dog, cat, puppy, hamster, guinea pig, or kitten. I’ve also tried rebutting that their dad is allergic, and that they have their very own bunnies (see above) who live at their grandparents, but they are still persistent. That said, it has been quite difficult while putting this issue together to not head straight to the SPCA and pick out a family dog. Not only was I taunted by some seriously adorable entries into our pet photo contest (see page 14), but we also feature a story with great tips on adopting your families’ first pet, what kind of pet to get, and how to keep the kids involved with a pet’s care (see page 28). The good news (at least for me and John) is that we resisted a pet for now and I could
focus on the rest of our great articles this month, including several on Black History Month activities (see New & Notable, updates on the new Anne Arundel County Public Library on West Street (see page 8), and thought provoking articles on the new Global Community Citizenship course given to freshmen in Anne Arundel schools (page 18), and another on helping kids who are stressed about climate change. Finally, it’s camp season! Yes, we know it’s still freezing out, but camps are already filling up, so head to our Overnight Camp Directory on page 22 to get a jump on picking the perfect place for your sleepaway campers this summer. Maybe by then we’ll have a dog.

Sneak Peek Reveals New Annapolis Library a Real Page-Turner
T
hough permitting issues delayed its groundbreaking and a bit of political drama slowed its official naming, the much-anticipated new Annapolis Library on West Street is expected to open with a ribbon cutting ceremony on April 29. While the public will get its first chance to see and learn about all that the facility offers during an all-ages Community Day on May 2, Chesapeake Family was lucky enough to get a behind-the-scenes tour of a building that, according to Skip Auld, Anne Arundel County Public Library CEO, “truly demonstrates the changing nature of how people use libraries.” “Libraries have a history going back many centuries as a storehouse for books, with the emphasis on preservation rather than use,” Auld says. “However, in our modern era libraries have become places that function to serve ever-changing community needs, and every square foot of the new Annapolis Library is devoted to doing so.”

FEBRUARY 2020
Here are just a few of the features that will help the $24,342,541 facility meet this mission:
Its Size
The library is roughly 1.5 times as large as its predecessor in terms of square footage (32,500 square feet), but it feels larger thanks to high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the open floor plan with tons of natural light. In terms of contents, it will house approximately 60,000 print books as well as hundreds of magazines, newspapers, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, Launchpads, and Playaways. The big step up in size is a necessity. Christine Feldmann, Anne Arundel County Public Libraries’ marketing and communications director, expects the new library to inspire plenty of new card signups and to welcome roughly 1,500 visitors a day (up from the old library’s average of 1,000).
Its Awesome Design
Along with many modern, unique elements such as an exposed-wood ceiling and multicolored shapes embedded in the floor, the library will incorporate regionally inspired features such as a “river” of blue stone embedded in the main sidewalk, a large wall panel depicting George Washington resigning as General in the State Capitol and a huge digitized map of the entire Chesapeake Bay region.
Meeting Spaces
In an effort to make the library a true “community hub,” it contains a 3,000 squarefoot, subdividable meeting room that can host nearly 400 people for everything from business meetings to movie nights and yoga; two smaller private meeting rooms, complete with snazzy glass whiteboards for things like entrepreneurial brainstorming or SAT prep sessions; and five more collaboration spaces.
new & notable Age- & Service-Specific Areas
Seeking to provide “pathways for all members of the community,” the library contains: • A “babies in bloom” section, where toddlers can crawl around and engage in fun programs such as kindergarten readiness. • A large indoor children’s space where kids can experience programs and activities from the compass carpet in front of the Discovery Dock—a staging area that Rudy Rodela, chief of support services, names as his most favorite place. There is also a fenced-in outdoor turf area where they can play. • The Teen Zone, where pre-teens and teens can hang out, mess around, “geek out,” study, and pursue college prep. • The Tech Zone, where 32 public computer stations (laptop checkout will also be coming!) will support research, professional development, and career advancement. • A Tinker/Maker Space where people of all ages can learn about, explore, and practice all-things STEM by using high-tech tools and toys including sewing and coding equipment, a 3D printer, VHS-to-DVD and Vinyl-to-USB converters, and a LEGO wall. • The Gold Star Collection, a wellprotected yet accessible collection of books and materials, some one-of-akind, pertaining to Maryland history. • A Vending Café where visitors will be able to not only purchase from vending machines but also prepare their own snacks or warm up coffee or tea. “Bringing this library to life has been a labor of love for everyone involved, from the architect to the interior designers to the library staff,” Rodela says. “It’s also been very special to see the community’s interest and excitement grow, and we can’t wait for it to see and enjoy this truly spectacular place.” To stay up-to-date on the ribbon cutting and Community Day, see a full album of construction photos, or take a virtual tour of the library, visit aacpl.net/new-annapolis.
By the Way…
In more library news, Discoveries: The Library at the Mall is moving into a larger storefront in the former Charlotte Russe and American Eagle stores near Crate and Barrel. The nearly 13,000 square-foot-facility will hold a kid’s preview day on Monday, February 17 and host a ribbon cutting on Tuesday, February 18 at 11:30 a.m.
Seal it up!
T
he use of dental sealants is becoming more prevalent in family dentistry. So, what is a dental sealant, and should you use it on your kids’ teeth? To start, dental sealant is a thin protective coating that is essentially painted on tooth surfaces, most often targeting the rocky tops of back molars, where, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service, “food and germs can get stuck in the pits and grooves and stay there a long time because toothbrush bristles cannot brush them away.” The American Dental Association says that “children and adults can benefit from sealants, but the earlier you get them, the better,” adding that “sealing
these teeth as soon as they come through can keep them cavity-free from the start.” According to the CDC’s 2019 Oral Health Surveillance Report, prevalence of sealants has increased by more than 10 percent, from 31 percent during 1999–2004 to 42 percent during 2011–2016.” The organization also boasts the use of sealant, noting that “School-age children (ages 6–11) without sealants have almost 3 times more 1st molar cavities than those with sealants.” While sealants are not a substitute for basic brushing and flossing habits the barrier can both prevent cavities from forming as well as from getting worse. Some dentists will recommend FEBRUARY 2020
putting sealants on baby teeth, especially if the child is prone to cavities or has particularly deep grooves in their molars. It’s good to check with your dentist when your child’s big teeth start coming in to see if he or she recommends it for your child. Costs for dental sealants range from $30 to $40 per tooth and are often covered by dental insurance. Sealants can last up to 10 years, though dentists will check at each checkup to see if they’re still intact. Ultimately whether you use dental sealants as part of your family’s oral health care plan is up to you and your dentist. But it’s one more simple tool to keep your family’s teeth healthy. —Ann Levelle

FEBRUARY 2020
E
ach year my son (currently in 8th grade) comes home in the month of February and tells me that they learned about Harriet Tubman to celebrate Black History month. We have had this talk several years in a row on what can the school do different other than read a book about Harriet Tubman to celebrate Black History month, which led to a bigger conversation on why isn’t Black History celebrated year-round in schools? With minority teachers making up only 18 percent of America’s educators, representation in the classroom is not high. Racial diversity is important in any field, but it is especially significant when the lack of it affects young people in schools. Imagine going through your entire day without ever seeing part of yourself in another person, without ever being able to identify or connect with someone like yourself. For most of people, it’s difficult to imagine, but there are students who experience this on a daily basis in school. So my son and I took this information and came up with ways the school could celebrate Black History year-round and emailed it to his principal offering a solution to help with change. Below are the ways we came up with for educators to teach black history all year long: • Because of Them We Can is a subscription box that delivers black history lessons to your front door including props, learning tools and lesson plans. becauseofthemwecan.com • Change an area/bulletin board of your classroom at least monthly to celebrate a specific person in black history, highlighting their accomplishments. • Set aside the last Friday of the month to watch an important documentary about a person or moment in black history. • Schedule a field trip to a museum, like the Banneker-Douglass Museum in Annapolis. • Read books that are about people who aren’t as heard of as Harriet Tubman, or books written by black authors. • Support black art by visiting a black artist’s gallery or supporting black artists’ visual art, photography, music, writing, which have the power to inspire and provoke powerful emotions, as well as chronicle history in a unique and sometimes underappreciated way. • Work with HBCU’s and their students. Expose them to black role models in your local community. • Discuss black history, past and present. Black history isn’t a thing of the past. There are huge movements and achievements being made on a daily basis that we should be discussing and celebrating. Don’t be afraid to talk about hard topics. —Jenny Cardoza

SCHOOLS’
TO
TEACH
DIVERSITY
Roche
P
rincipal Gina Davenport of Arundel High School in Gambrills always perceived the diverse culture on her campus to be a positive one, in which people of all backgrounds and walks of life got along. But in the winter of 2017, a racially charged incident at the school changed all of that. “When this incident occurred,” she recalls, “it made me realize that our students really didn’t have the skills or depth of understanding to handle racial incidents that were happening not just in our school but in our nation.” Arundel High held a community forum where parents could voice their concerns, and one problem Davenport heard from many of them was that there was nothing in the curriculum to give students the skills they need to overcome their differences. Davenport assembled a group of educators from within her school who all had different backgrounds and encouraged them to develop a course that would equip students for this purpose. The course, which would come to be known as Global Community Citizenship (GCC), was approved by the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Board of Education later that spring, and Arundel started teaching the class later that fall. Within two years, GCC has expanded to be a countywide requirement for all freshmen entering any one of the 12 AACPS high schools. Superintendent Dr. George Arlotto sent a letter to parents after the board voted to expand the course to all high school freshmen, noting that this addition to the curriculum demonstrates the efforts of AACPS in fighting the hostility and bigotry that have increased in recent years. “We have seen an alarming number of incidents in our communities and our schools in the last few years in which hate-filled messages were written, displayed or distributed,” he wrote. “That is why, though some may be opposed, the time is right to move forward with the expansion of this course.”
GCC uses discussion-based classes in which students learn about their community by exploring topics, events and questions. Some days students might read a newspaper article or watch a TED Talk, following it up with conversations on how the material reflects values and diversity. “As [students] became more comfortable, [the class] became that area where they could talk about difficult topics and really learn how to have a respectful conversation and express their opinion and listen for understanding rather than listening to give a response,” Davenport says. Johanna Ricker, who teaches the class at Arundel, sees students develop into community-minded individuals thanks to the class. “We focus on their core values in the beginning and how they impact their decision-making,” she says, “then move to their role in their communities. We also discuss what it means to be a good citizen and how to be changemakers.”
Developing the course required no additional cost to AACPS, as it is taught by teachers who are already on staff, and all material is developed by the teachers without use of extra textbooks or expensive media. And despite what some critics have said about the course, Davenport emphasizes that it’s not about forcing any one set of values on any students. Instead, it’s about finding ways to frame a conversation so that students can express and explain their values— something the students are responding to and adopting. “It’s not uncommon to hear ninth-graders say, ‘While I respect your opinion about the culture in the city versus the county, I really feel that . . .’ ” Davenport explains. “We’re giving kids the language to agree . . . or disagree politely and have a conversation.” As students learn how to express themselves and learn to see the world through the eyes of others, they become more open to other perspectives and less hostile toward

those who are different from them. When Davenport appeared on Larry King Live in December 2017, sociologist Dr. Michael Kimmel of Stony Brook University observed, “If hate can be learned, it can be unlearned, and it can be unlearned through a process of reengagement with the other, those people you think you hate.” What has resulted in the two years since the course was instated at Arundel High is a dramatic change in culture, sometimes in unexpected ways. Discipline data reflects that students are causing less disruption, presumably because they now have the problemsolving skills they need and don’t resort to inappropriate language or action. “We’re really seeing that kids are developing social and emotional skills that help them think before they react,” Davenport says. “They also see there are a lot of different perspectives to a situation, so they’re not being as judgmental. They’re starting to really understand other people’s perspectives.” This also leads to improved academic

achievement because, as Davenport explains, students who feel included and accepted are more likely to take risks, set goals and feel more in tune with the purpose of being in school. Arundel teacher Molly Sinnott sees GCC as a vital part of development. “We talk often in education about the importance of educating the ‘whole child,’ ” she says. “GCC creates an intentional place in a freshman student’s schedule to connect with a teacher and classmates in a relevant, creative way. The skills we build are undeniably foundational for civic participation and social-emotional growth.” Now that GCC has expanded to all public high schools in the county, educators have the opportunity to tailor the class to the unique needs of their school and community at large. “The course is at its best when it taps into the most authentic information about the physical community where our students live,” Sinnott explains, citing that students love to apply the course to their daily lives instead of learning
about it in the abstract. Students agree that the class has been rewarding. For Arundel junior John Cardwell, the class taught him how to assert himself and be a changemaker. “This class contributed to a lot of who I am today,” he says. “It changed my mindset on global issues and taught me how to listen to all sides of stories, not just the ones on the surface.” Junior Elliana Anderson emphasizes that it’s about more than learning tolerance. “Where the world teaches tolerance, this class teaches acceptance and empathy,” she says. “You are not taught to tolerate something or someone; you’re taught to find new perspectives, to put yourself into other people’s shoes and try to understand.” The best part, according to those involved, is that no matter what a student’s academic strength or personal interests, they’ll take something valuable from GCC that they will be able to use in life. As Davenport puts it, “No matter what career they go into, they’re going to need these skills.”

A
s of January 1, 2020, Maryland became the second state, after California, to ban the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores. However, there are still plenty of options available to add a furry, feathered, or even scaled member to the family, such as adoption through a local rescue. Nick Crawford is the office manager for the Anne Arundel County SPCA. He offers some insight for those debating adding a new member to the household, and encourages families to take into consideration both the needs of the family as well as the pet before making the commitment.
What are good first pets for preschool age children or toddlers? What type of pet care responsibilities can they share?
There are many great first pets for younger children. With any pet, the adult should be the main caregiver, but there are so many fun responsibilities the children can share with the adult. Guinea Pigs are great beginner companion animals for families with young children. They are relatively docile and don’t require as much in-depth care as some other pets. Responsibilities to share include changing the bedding, filling up the food bowl, changing the water, socializing the animal, and playing gently with them.
How about elementary school age children?
Dogs and cats are good options for children ages 6 to 10. As kids get older, they are able to take on the more nuanced responsibilities that come with taking care of cats and dogs. Dogs need lots of exercise, so a spunky six- to 10-yearold may be a good energy match for an energetic dog! Dogs and cats also provide companionship to the family members. Canines and kitties are often affectionate and like to love on their family members. Having a companion animal who will give them licks and cuddles can be very beneficial to families’ and the children’s happiness! Kids in this age-range tend to be more open to picking up waste and scooping the litter box as well. Before you adopt, make sure everybody in the
family fun home can meet the dog or cat to make sure they seem to get along. It is also a good idea to check with shelter staff and volunteers to see if that particular animal has a history with children.
AAC SPCA ADOPTABLE PETS
What about teenagers?
Teenagers are usually mature and capable enough to greatly assist with most pet care, but one interesting option other than cats, dogs, and rabbits, are reptiles. I have adopted a crested gecko and two bearded dragons from the SPCA of Anne Arundel County. Reptiles are considered “exotic” pets and do require a higher level of care than some other small pets. Proper cages, lighting, heat sources, and diets are all very important to the health of the animal and must be monitored closely. As with any animal, make sure they are ready and committed before rescuing. The bearded dragons I adopted were turned in because the teenager in the home no longer wanted them after several years. Reptiles often have long lifespans and need a dedicated owner!
What are other things all families should consider when choosing a pet?
Charlie, 4 years 11 months
Georgia, 9 years 3 months
Pets should always be a family decision. We recommend steering away from giving animals as surprises or just one person being responsible for the animal. Everybody in the home should be on board with a pet and be willing to pitch in. Even low-maintenance pets require a good amount of time and care, so everyone should be ready to help out. Many people can be allergic to animals, so another good tip would be to come into the shelter and spend time meeting the animals before committing to adoption. That way you have time to see if any symptoms or allergic reactions arise! Fenced yards are very beneficial to dog ownership, but aren’t absolutely necessary. Keep in mind that if you don’t have a fenced yard, you will have to leash walk the dog more often to give them exercise. Home size is also a factor to consider when adopting a pet. If you live in an apartment, you may not want a gigantic 100-pound dog or a breed that is known for howling. Your neighbors will thank you later.

Many families find the process to adopt through a rescue daunting and time consuming. Why does adoption seem complicated? The SPCA of Anne Arundel County has an application process because we want to make sure every animal that is adopted goes to a home who is qualified and prepared to bring a pet in. We get many animals turned into us because landlords won’t allow a pet or the animal is too much to handle. Our Application Process ensures we can match each individual animal to its ideal home. We also like to look for a history of veterinary care for previous pets and make sure the family is equipped to bring a pet home.

Do you have recommendations on the safest way to introduce a child to pet care and respecting the new family member? Safety is super important when having a pet. Parents should always teach their children how to respect animals and handle them appropriately. Even the sweetest animal could bite if it feels scared or threatened. Our shelter offers tours and classes for children of all ages where they can learn more about responsible pet ownership and animal handling. Details on our programs can be found here: aacspca. org/education-outreach

PET FINANCES
E
ven if you adopt a pet through a rescue, there are expenses that come with pet ownership. One must consider the cost of spay or neuter (often covered in your adoption fee), vaccines, preventative medications such as flea/tick and heartworm prevention, food and toys. Small furry friends, such as guinea pigs and rabbits need an enclosure, bedding and food. The ASPCA offers estimates on what you can expect the first year, as well as subsequent years, barring the unexpected trip to the vets. Dog First year $1,471 to $2,000 Each year afterward $737 to $1,040
Cat First year $1,174
Other First year $374 to $802
Each year afterward $809
Each year afterward $304 to $477
