Beating the January blues away

dmittedly, January is not my favorite month. The cold dark mornings make it really hard to get out of bed, and even harder to walk out the front door. Over the years I’ve developed a strategy that helps me get through the winter. It seems counterintuitive, but I focus on the things that I like to do outside. Ice skating and walking on nearly empty beaches looking for treasures are two great winter activities that will get you out of your house and help you enjoy the winter months. You’ll find expert advice from beachcomber Mary McCarthy on page XXX, and a surprisingly long list of places where families can go to ice skate. You may have heard about SEL, but have no idea what it is. This month we explore Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and why schools are focusing on helping kids develop self-regulation of emotions and behaviors, and how to participate cooperatively in groups. It’s not just preschoolers that need to learn SEL, but with over a year of online learning, older kids need to be

reminded how to work with others too. Along with SEL, young kids also need to learn the difference between pretending and lying. There’s a handy article with tips on how to teach truth telling including the recommendation of three different books you can read to your children that teach the importance of telling the truth. And finally, we’ve pulled together a comprehensive list of preschools. It’s not easy deciding where to send your kids to preschool. Your family should feel comfortable with the school you choose. Many of those kids and parents, and even teachers will be a part of your daily life for many years. The school philosophy should match how you feel. The preschool directory is a great place to start your search. For even more information about each school go online to ChesapeakeFamiliy.com/preschools

Save Birds, Turn Off Your Lights Doing this small task nightly can save our feathered friends

O

ne billion birds die every year in window collisions. Migratory species are often lost prior to reproduction during spring migration, while fledglings may be lost in addition while attempting their first migration in the fall. Populations of neotropical migrants can not sustain these losses indefinitely. Artificial light at night is something many of us can quickly and easily control. Night time lighting causes birds to deviate from their flight path. They become disoriented and often end up trapped in areas that are increasingly inhospitable to them. What once was a successful survival strategy to attempt long flights during a time when navigation is supported by the nighttime stars and sky, absent additional predators, has become confusing and dangerous to them. The night sky is losing it’s darkness and many believe this is not good for any living thing, including people. What You Can Do • Avoid any unnecessary lighting • Put motion sensors on all interior lights to reduce the amount of lighting left on at night, manually turn off remaining lights during critical migration periods such as architectural lighting, interior upper story lights, and lobby or atrium lights • Ensure the lighting is “fully shielded” prevent light from spilling upwards, installing dark sky compliant zero up lighting • Install window coverings to prevent the spilling of light

from areas where turning lights off is not a viable option • Choose blue/green spectrum lighting rather than red/ white spectrum lighting which is more attractive to birds • Spread the word to others who may not know how significant this step can be towards protecting the environment for all living things In an event that drew national attention from the media, a building in Galveston killed almost 400 birds, mostly warblers, in a single evening. Many buildings kill that number during a year, though not usually all at once. The case highlighted the need for building managers and members of the community to work together to prevent catastrophic events like this. National coverage of this terrible event finally persuaded the building manager to turn off the architectural uplighting during migration seasons. “The lights are what drew the birds to the building, but it was glass windows that ultimately killed them, said Sarah Flournoy, program manager for Houston Audubon, a conservation organization in Texas.” “What we’re trying to get people to understand is that it isn’t one particular building,” Flournoy said. “This is something that the community needs to come together and work on. It’s more of a widespread challenge. It’s our hope that … [this incident] will create awareness of the problem, and how to generate a great solution.” Information from Safe Skies Maryland safeskiesmaryland.org JANUARY 2022

Park Spotlight

inder Farm Park, located in Millersville, is the perfect place to spend a January day outdoors. It’s easy to get to, parking is plentiful, the trails are easy to access and there are places to explore out of the weather if your kids get cold. The 288-acre park allows for plenty of hiking, biking, bird watching, fishing and picnicking. Kids of all ages will surely love the large playground and tot-lot at the park as well. Take a Walk Take a walk on the 2.8-mile paved perimeter trail or on the several miles of natural trails the park offers. If it gets too cold you can duck into a barn and see some of the animals that are cared for by 4-H members and volunteers. The park is a farm that is home to chickens, turkeys, ducks, cows, pigs, goats, and sheep. If you are lucky you will meet some of the people who care for the animals and your kids might have the chance to brush a critter or hold a baby. Buildings to Explore The Visitors Center Exhibit Hall displays a variety of farming artifacts, from the smallest implements to an enormous tobacco press. It is open during normal business hours.

Outbuildings The Ice House and Outhouse are located near the Farm House. You can open the doors to take a peek inside. Museum Tobacco was a primary cash crop in Maryland until 1999 when the state offered tobacco farmers a buyout with money from the national tobacco settlement with cigarette manufacturers. The Tobacco Barn Museum contains many large pieces of farm equipment, including a tobacco planter, grain cleaner, and an antique chicken brooder. Smaller pieces of equipment are shown in display cabinets. The barn is open daily. Picnics If it’s warm enough, pack a lunch and enjoy a meal on one of the picnic tables located throughout the park. But mostly your kids can get outside and run and jump, and get their wiggles out during the coldest month of the year. Kinder Farm has a daily entry fee of $6 or you purchase an annual entry permit for $30 that can be used at all the Anne Arundel County parks.

Social-Em tional Learning 101: The A’s to Z’s of Focusing on the Whole Student

A

sk any teacher or parent what they hope for their student, and you’d be hard pressed to find one who doesn’t just wish for academic success but also the development of healthy relationships, confidence, and personal responsibility. This is where Social-Emotional Learning, better known as SEL, comes in.

What is SEL?

The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) defines SEL as “the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others,

10

chesapeakefamily.com JANUARY 2022

By Laura Boycourt establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.” Many SEL models include an emphasis on what the collaborative calls the “CASEL 5”: self-awareness, social awareness, responsible decision making, selfmanagement, and relationship skills. The development and strengthening of these social-emotional skills can come through many means. Working with a partner to build a creation out of blocks. Saying “good morning!” to teachers and other students. Playing games. Discussing emotions and how to process them. These are all examples of what SEL might look like. Although SEL curriculum and practice can vary state, school, and even classroom, the goal remains the sameto help students develop their whole

selves, not just their academic prowess. At its heart, SEL is about a student’s “well being socially, emotionally, academically, and all the in-betweens,” says Shana Brickner, Student Services Team Lead at Patuxent River High School in Lusby. At Calvary Center School in Annapolis, Director Claire Zarrilli says the preschool’s goal is “help our students develop self-regulation of emotions and behaviors, participate cooperatively in groups, and build positive relationships with others.” And SEL isn’t just for young ones who may be navigating new feelings and peers; it’s for all of us. “Who doesn’t need to focus on areas such as social awareness, self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, and

relationship skills?” Brickner says. “These are areas we continuously work to develop, even as adults. How we teach these in schools varies based on age, but at all grade levels, some lessons are more explicit and others are an integral part of everyday lessons.” Samantha Straub, Chair of Upper School Counseling at the Severn School, says that SEL is critical across all grades. “The same skill needs to be revisited again and again to account for kids’ developmental readiness and the social framework within which they are operating,” she explains. “In kindergarten, for example, it would be appropriate for teachers to explicitly teach communication tools for sharing playground equipment or for expressing one’s emotions with words. By high school, these same students STILL need lessons in communication, only now the focus might be on the development of refusal skills to resist negative peer pressure or to obtain consent.”

SEL in Action

SEL may come in the form of a planned lesson, or it might take place naturally when an opportunity presents itself. No matter when and how it occurs, Straub says it’s beneficial for both guidance counselors and teachers to be able to work SEL into the day. “Ideally, SEL ought not be a oneoff on some curricular check-list, nor should it be handed over exclusively to school counselors to deliver in dropin classroom visits,” she says. “SEL works best when classroom teachers are trained in the learning benefits of SEL and in how to best incorporate SEL initiatives into their existing curricula.” At Patuxent High, Brickner says that in the past, the school has used an advisory period dedicated to SEL, “focusing on building community and connections among staff and students, helping students discover the importance of diversity and being true to oneself, building self-awareness and regulation skills, and so on.” Currently PHS teachers regularly weave SEL

into their classroom content, and counselors lead individual and group SEL meetings. Groups, clubs, and other types of school opportunities also provide the setting for social-emotional learning. While its curriculum includes lessons specifically dedicated to developing SEL skills, teachers at Calvary Center School find that SEL occurs at many times, Zarrilli says. “Our school staff all understand that SEL takes place at all times and during all types of activities at preschool. The staff are attentive to student interactions during circle time, craft projects, centers, free play, recess, lunch, etc., and offer immediate guidance when a child is not using words to communicate his/her feelings, is having trouble following rules, or is behaving unkindly. The opportunities for teaching SEL skills informally occur often, and each situation has immediate relevance to the child(ren) involved, so they are much more likely to be remembered.”

Why SEL Matters

“If all schools focused on was academics, we would be doing a disservice to our students and our community,” says Brickner. She says that because SEL places so much emphasis on the development and growth of healthy social and emotional interactions and habits, students are adding important skills to their toolboxes that will serve them well in the present and well into the future. “We are helping students learn to self-regulate their emotions, develop empathy, build relationships, collaborate with a team, respond to conflict in a healthy manner, adjust to transitions, and more. Arguably, these are the skills that are most desired after high school,” Brickner says. Pointing to guidance and research from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Straub offers that SEL is effective in its power to protect students

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING Self-Awareness Self-Management Social Awareness Relationship Skills Responsible Decision Making Future Self from making poor choices, such as substance abuse or breaking rules. “When students feel confident about their ability to tackle challenges, they are more likely to take the good kind of risks that result in personal and academic growth,” she says. “SEL is foundational in making brains and bodies ready for learning.” While SEL is critical for the well-being of individual students, the power of its positive domino effect can’t be understated. “Not only are they (students) ready to learn themselves,” says Zarrilli of children engaged in SEL, “they are also ready to be a positive member of their class rather than require additional nonacademic attention from the teacher. In this way, they are also contributing to every other classmate’s learning.”

Lying or Pretending? Teaching Kids to Tell the Truth Jan Pierce, M.Ed.

S

omewhere around the age of three, when children begin to understand parents may not know what they actually did or didn’t do, your precious little angel may begin to tell big whoppers. “Baby Jack made that mess,” or “I played with a dinosaur today and rode on his back.” Before you panic, thinking your child is destined for a life of crime, let’s take a look at when children lie, why they lie, and how to teach them to tell the truth.

Why

Children tell lies for a variety of reasons. They’re afraid of getting in

trouble, they want attention, they’re testing boundaries, or quite often with the very young, they just enjoy a good story and haven’t yet learned the distinction between fantasy and real life. If a child breaks a family rule, or makes a big mess, he may be afraid of the consequences. Parents need to first discern whether the infraction was intentional or a normal childhood accident such as spilling milk. When parents see the lie was meant to cover a normal child “accident,” it’s best to reassure that we all make mistakes and work together to clean it up. When the lie was

meant to cover breaking a family rule, it’s best to set a consequence in line with the infraction---perhaps forgoing play with a favorite toy for a period of time. Setting reasonable consequences builds trust yet reinforces the family value of both the rule and truth-telling. When consequences involve physical punishment, children are much more likely to lie in an effort to avoid the pain. Some “lies” are merely pretending. Wouldn’t it be fun to have an imaginary friend, or be able to fly to the moon and back? This is absolutely normal behavior and part of a child’s growth and development. Young children are learning right and wrong and need experience to tell the difference between truthfulness and lying. Plus we adults read them stories filled with creativity, pretending and magical acts. So children need experience and practice in separating fun, creative fantasy from everyday real life.

When

Children begin to experiment with telling fibs at about age three when language is developed enough to

express their thoughts clearly. They are experimenting with the lines between fact and fantasy. They understand they may displease adults with some behaviors and want to avoid being in trouble. As children grow older they learn they can tell a lie and not get caught. They’ve learned more about how other people think, and know when their fabrication is believable. That’s why it’s so important as parents to take the time to teach honesty as a family value from babyhood on up. Whenever your child tells an untruth, you have the opportunity to teach. If they share a creative idea as fact, “My doll says she is hungry now.” You have the opportunity to teach, “It would be fun if your doll could talk, wouldn’t it?” If a mess is made and a fib told, “The dog spilled the juice.” You can say, “It’s okay if you accidently spilled. We all spill sometimes. Let’s clean up the mess.” And when lies are blatantly told to cover up a broken rule, “I didn’t hit my brother.” Then a fair and reasonable consequence is imposed to set the boundary. “We don’t hit and our family tells the truth.”

How to Teach Truth-telling

We all want our children to be honest, upright citizens. Here are some ways to teach our children to be truth-tellers: • You can talk all day about being honest, but if your children hear

you tell a lie, they’ll know you don’t really mean it. Even small fibs told by parents are confusing to children trying to navigate the rules of the home. Notice and encourage whenever truth is told. Both in real-life situations and when watching television or videos, there are opportunities to notice who is telling the truth and who is not. “Oh, dear, that character is telling a lie. What will happen now?” Or, when your child does tell the truth, make a point of complimenting him or patting her on the back. Help children understand the difference between truth and fantasy. Enjoy fantasy tales with your children, but talk about reality. “It would be fun if animals could really talk, but it’s just pretend.” Tell your children you know they can do the right thing.“I know you can do the right thing.” And “I know you can make the right choices.” Talk about the importance of being honest. “When people don’t tell the truth they feel bad. They may be worried or feel guilty. It’s so much better to tell the truth.” Play a game in which you draw a card with a sentence written on it. Read it aloud for everyone to hear. Is it real-life or fantasy? Or role-play with puppets that either tell the truth or lie. Avoid tempting your child to lie.

Explosive anger or asking “Who did that?” will tempt a child to lie to avoid trouble. Whenever possible, stay calm and get to the bottom of the problem. Additionally we want children to trust us enough to tell the truth in the event of any kind of dangerous or abusive situations. Children have to know it’s safe to admit a problem. • Share childhood memories that help teach honesty. Kids love to hear stories of their parents as young children. Share hard lessons learned. Read books that lead to discussion about truth and lies. We want our children to thrive as responsible citizens. We want them to be people of character and moral goodness. Honesty is one of those character traits that take some work to instill. It needs to be held up and valued in our everyday lives. The value of creativity and fantasy has its place in our lives, but children need to be taught the difference between fantasy and reality. So remember, an occasional fib is a normal part of a child’s life, and for most kids it doesn’t become a habit. With patient teaching and understanding your child will master truthfulness. Jan Pierce, M.Ed., is a retired teacher and author of Homegrown Readers and Homegrown Family Fun. Find Jan at janpierce.net.

W Bundle up, little beachcombrrrs! Winter Beachcombing for Kids! By Mary McCarthy

hen most people think of going to the beach, they picture swimsuits, colorful umbrellas and barefoot walks in the sand. But for diehard beachcombers, it’s not Memorial Day we celebrate, it’s Labor Day, when the “traditional” beachgoers head home, the coast is literally clear, tides are lower and beachcombing is at its best.

Choose a Spot

As beachcombers we are often asked for our hunting spots, and like surfers and fishermen, we guard them very carefully. Debates rage on in Facebook JANUARY 2022

family fun groups about whether beaches should be shared publicly. As for finding your own beach for discovering shoreline treasures, you can take a two-pronged approach. First, search online for local beaches. This will reveal area public parks that contain shorelines. The “off-season” is always a better time to walk the beach in search of sea glass, shells, and other fun finds. Don’t forget to bring a bag to remove trash! It’s a great learning opportunity for kids to learn about the effects of marine debris on sea life. Next, use Google Earth and Google maps to search for shorelines that might be a bit more off the beaten path. Needless to say, don’t trespass, but in Maryland and most other states, no one owns the coastline up to the high tide line, so if you arrive by kayak you can often find areas to explore on large shorelines by doing a little investigating. Kayaking is a little bit of a tougher experience in the winter, and should only be attempted by experienced paddlers.

All Tide Up

Choosing a time of day to go exploring with kids of all ages is key. Download a tide app onto your phone; most likely it will search the closest tide station or you can choose any tide station/ geographical area. Go to a beach or coastline at least 1-2 hours before low tide to allow time to search before the tide starts coming in. Search the low tide line where the water meets the shore first, then work your way up and across the high tide line when the tide starts to come in. Be sure to check the midline between the low and high tide lines as many treasures are often “hiding in plain sight.” Keep in mind that it isn’t just large bodies of water where treasures can be found: the shorelines of lakes, rivers and streams are also very interesting to explore.

22

chesapeakefamily.com JANUARY 2022

Gear Up

When the weather is cold, gear is important, especially for kids. Waterproof boots and gloves are a must— check out the fingerless waterproof gloves that are available, making beachcombing easier when you need to pick up items from the beach. Hand warmers are available at many pharmacies and convenience stores, and can be tucked into the palm of gloves or into boots to keep winter beachcombers warm. Wool socks, wearing plenty of layers, and especially choosing a warm headband or hat are all good ideas when venturing out for a cold weather beachcomb.

Enjoy the Scenery

The advantage of heading out in cold weather to the shoreline is that with less people on the beaches, there is a better chance of finding beach treasures. Kids and parents alike can search not only for sea glass, but for interesting sea shells, shark teeth (in the right places), and other interesting finds that might show up. Knowing the history of the area where you’re strolling may help identify finds. Even old beach toys that wash ashore can be a wonderful discovery for a child and also serve in a beach cleanup capacity to keep plastic out of the waterway. Make it fun! You can play an alphabet game of searching for things that begin with the letters of the alphabet in order, or make a little treasure hunt list before you leave of things you might hope to see or discover. Beachcombing isn’t as much about what we find; the joy is in the search. Enjoy the surroundings- the beautiful rosy rainbow of sunset colors over the Chesapeake on a late winter afternoon or the radiant reds and oranges of a

What is Visionary Art? Like love, you know it when you see it. "Visionary art as defined for the purposes of the American Visionary Art Museum refers to art produced by self-taught individuals, usually without formal training, whose works arise from an innate personal vision that revels foremost in the creative act itself." In short, visionary art begins by listening to the inner voices of the soul, and often may not even be thought of as 'art' by its creator.

Current - Sep. 4, 2022 at the Zanvyl A. Krieger Main Building

AVAM’s 26th original and newest thematic mega-exhibition "Healing & The Art of Compassion (and the Lack Thereof!)" focuses public attention on two sibling essential powers - healing and compassion - twin forces for greater good sorely in need today. Clearly defining compassion, how it operates as a healing force in our own lives, within our own families, our communities, in social welfare, monetary, and justice systems, and in the world, is at the heart of this uplifting and enlightening exhibition’s premise and purpose. avam.org

Womens Circle The Power of Being Present Jillian Amodio

30

chesapeakefamily.com JANUARY 2022

W

omen’s Circles provide a supportive sense of sisterhood and connection that many women have felt lacking in their lives. Women are creators by nature. The feminine energy within us creates boundless opportunities for creativity in various forms. Women create art, music, connections, love, conversation, ideas, change, life, etc. In centuries past when communal living or multigenerational living situations were the norm rather than the outlier, women often relied on a sense of sisterhood to go about not

stay inspired only completing the daily tasks and duties of domestic life, but also for a sense of belonging, and a sense of feeling understood and cared for.

Craving Deeper Connections

While feelings of sisterhood and opportunities for female bonding may still be found in friendships, moms groups, book clubs, or other social organizations, one thing many women express is that sometimes the relationships we have with other women in our lives can feel surface level, and many of us are craving deeper connections and a rich sense of sisterhood and camaraderie. The concept of women’s circles has been discussed in publications like Yoga Journal and Vogue. Simply put, women’s circles are a gathering of women and can be just about anything you design them to be within your desired intentions. More traditionally, women’s circles are a gathering of women during the new moon and the full moon given the perceived synchronicity between the lunar cycle and the female menstrual cycle.

Significance of Lunar Cycle

For centuries many civilizations and cultures have equated the moon to feminine energy and fertility. It makes sense, throughout the lunar cycle, the moon phases emerge more rounded than before, peaking at the full moon. Just as the figure of an expectant mother begins to round as the baby’s birth draws near. A typical menstrual cycle lasts 28 days. The lunar cycle is quite similar. A full lunar cycle from one new moon to the next new moon is 29.5 days in length. For many centuries and for many civilizations the lunar cycle has played a great significance in the gathering of women together to celebrate times of renewal and release both figuratively and literally.

What is a Women’s Circle?

Women’s circles are popping up locally as well. Rachel Graham is the founder of the Baltimore Women’s Circle and

is a life coach and yoga instructor. She says the intention of the Baltimore Women’s Circle is to be “ a supportive, sacred space and community for women to come together, connect, and share. Together we create a grounded setting where everyone feels safe to share their inner world. When women come together in a circle it’s a powerful experience because it allows us to celebrate, grow, and heal as a community.” Rachel says this group meets twice a month during the new moon and the full moon. Each meeting is unique but typically involves some form of meditation, journaling, connection or manifesting by group members desiring to share and support. As far as the goals and intentions for Baltimore Women’s Circle Rachel says “One of our core values is honoring every woman who walks into the circle. We recognize that we all have different backgrounds and upbringings and we’re naturally going to have different beliefs and perspectives because of that. This is a space to practice acceptance and see each other as we truly are: human beings who all crave acceptance & love.” Facilitators of Women’s Groups come from various backgrounds with

no singular religion or career path, but rather a desire to help women come together. The facilitators gather around the ideas of sisterhood, respect for the earth and co-creation. And as the Wild Woman Project says, “We also tend to be a heart-centered bunch, lots of laughter & tears.”

Sources for more information and local groups A great place to start looking for Women’s Circles to join is through social media. Some Facebook groups like the group Women’s Circle cast a wide net with over 44 thousand members and create a virtual social support network of women who are encouraged to uplift each other. Other groups such as the Southern Maryland Full Moon Women’s Circle are more local and cater to building relationships between women who live in a general area. There are numerous Women’s Circle meetups listed through the site meetup as well including the New Moon Goddess Circle through the Wild Woman Project Catonsville. thewildwomanproject.com/find-amoon-circle
