Finding Your Favorite Doc

y first daughter’s birth was rough. While nothing truly problematic occured, I was in labor for nearly 24 hours before reluctantly opting for a C-section. Needless to say, I was exhausted, angry, hungry and scared by the time I went under the knife. Then I was handed my infant, and I added confused, terrified and in a great deal of pain to the already long list of feels. Many of my memories of those first few hours are happy. But many more are upsetting because of how utterly tired I was, and how very afraid that because her birth hadn’t gone according to plan, that I had somehow failed at my first task of motherhood. Then in came Dr. Parmele. He was simply making rounds for Annapolis Pediatrics the morning Penny arrived, a normal day at work for him. But his gentle and loving nature with the baby and kindness and concern for us took an enormous weight from my shoulders. And though all of my fears of having an infant didn’t disappear, I felt at ease at least for the moment, knowing that we had a perfectly

healthy, beautiful baby, and a doctor who was in our corner. It’s that trust in a health care provider that sticks with you. And from what I see in this year’s Favorite Docs section (see page 14), I’m not the only one who has been impacted by a great care provider. Hundreds of you submitted nominations for your Favorite Docs—from the pediatricians who’ve put our minds at ease to the general practitioners who truly listen to us— you’ve shared which health care providers you trust. So keep this issue on hand (and remember it’s always available at ChesapeakeFamily.com/ favoritedocs) and when you need a new doctor for any reason, you’ll have the recommendations of your fellow readers to guide you. Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Fun

n July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon. It had been a mere eight years since President John F. Kennedy announced his goal to get a man to the moon. The landing captivated the world and was a culmination of the efforts of untold numbers of scientists, mathematicians, engineers, aviators and astronauts. This summer marks the 50th anniversary of the historic moon landing with celebrations across the country, including NASA hotspots like Houston, Tex., the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla., and of course, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum campuses in Washington, D.C. and Dulles, Va. During a celebration on the National Mall July 18 to 20, visitors can interact one-on-one with museum scientists to learn about lunar exploration, research and missions. Over the course of the weekend, you can see high-

resolution images from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, view the moon in 3D, and “retrace” the astronauts’ steps from the lunar module, visiting stations along a route approximately equivalent to the distances the astronauts walked on the moon. Here’s how to celebrate the anniversary with your family at official celebrations and at home.

By the Light of the Moon: A Century of Lunar Photographs: This exhibit opens on July 14, and will celebrate Apollo 11’s 50th anniversary with “a collection of lunar photographs made over the century preceding the Apollo 11 mission, as well as photographs taken by Armstrong and Aldrin during their lunar excursion.” nga.gov

She’s an African-American mathematician who was integral in analyzing data and calculating the complex equations that would send astronauts to the moon. Now, at 100 years old, she shares her story, from her days as a young girl exceptionally gifted in math to her work at NASA. Her journey was not an easy one; as a black woman in an era of brutal racism and sexism, Johnson faced daily challenges to establish herself as a member of the workforce in a competitive environment. In the early 1950s, she joined the organization that would one day become NASA to work as a “computer,” analyzing data and calculating the complex equations needed for successful spaceflights. While the book is aimed at young readers, it should appeal and inspire any book lover. We’ll be giving away a few copies of “Reaching for the Moon;” keep an eye on our Facebook page for details!

HAVE POTTY, WILL TRAVEL

Whether your child is just beginning toilet training or has it nearly mastered, it’s always a good idea to have a small, portable potty in the trunk for use during road trips. Sometimes kids just can’t wait, and public rest stops are either gross or miles away from your current location, so a potty on board offers a welcome solution. We have a Baby Bjorn with a removable “bowl,” which makes for relatively easy clean up. Better yet, popping in a disposable potty bag makes things even easier. We’ve also used an OXO foldable potty, which is always used with a disposable bag. Whichever potty you choose, it can be used at your final destination, especially if tiny bottoms won’t comfortably fit on the toilets at the hotel or grandma’s house.

3

Travel Tips: Small Hacks That Make a Big Difference

I

f the thought of traveling with young ones in tow is intimidating, you’re not alone. Between your little’s constant need to eat, go to the potty, and get those extra wiggles out, traveling any distance in excess of your daily mileage can be daunting. But fear not! As they say, it takes a village, and thanks a bevvy of advice I’ve gathered from seasoned travelers, experts, and trial and error, I’m a bit more confident when it comes to buckling up with the kids in tow. Here are some of the top travel hacks I have in my back pocket (or trunk).

STICKERS

While not quite as ubiquitous and impossible to fully clean up as glitter, stickers do have a bad rap for ending up places they shouldn’t (on furniture or in the laundry). However, they are fantastic to have on the go. A girlfriend once recommended them and although they’re simplistic, they are an attention grabber. Give your kiddo stickers and a small notepad and ask him or her to create a cool design. Get the reusable stickers and an accompanying activity book for lots of time-consuming fun.

4

SURPRISE GRAB BAG

I can’t remember if this was the recommendation of a friend, a mom I’ve never met on a Facebook page, or a parenting site (or perhaps all three!) but it’s ingenious: fill a Ziplock or similarly sized bag with stuff your kid has never seen before. A small game, a book, a mini Lego set . . . the list goes on. The point is to engage your small travel companion with novel stuff so it’s not predictable and boring. An enthralled kid is a win for everyone.

1

BYOB (BEVERAGE)

“If there’s a chance you’ll be gone longer than you think, always bring an extra drink” is our on-the-road motto. Whether we’re traveling across state lines or to a restaurant or theme park, we’re always sure to throw a couple kid drinks in our tote. Not only will this keep the kids hydrated, but it will save you a buck or two at the rest stop or restaurant. If you’ve got babies on the bottle, pre-measure formula in its own Ziploc baggy. When your little gets hungry, mix fresh bottled water and the powder in a bottle, and shake away.

WIPES AND HAND SANITIZER

This is almost a no-brainer, but wipes can get you out of a sticky situation in more ways that one. In addition to cleaning up diaperrelated messes, wipes and hand spray are key for those times when hygiene may fall to the wayside. Did the traveler before you leave a mess in a seat or on a handle? Wipe it down. Flying during flu season? Bust out that hand sanitizer before digging into the snacks. We like the Honest brand—good cleaning power, fewer icky chemicals.

A CHANGE OF EVERYTHING

Throw a full change of clothes (even socks!) in a large Ziploc bag for all lengthy trips. Potty accidents and juice spills can happen anywhere, so be prepared. An extra towel is also good to have on hand if you need to make an impromptu diaper change on a

questionable surface.

7

DO YOUR CAR SEAT HOMEWORK

You can probably install your child’s car seat with your eyes closed (don’t do that) and know the safety manual by heart. Flying, though, can present a bit of confusion when it comes the safest seating option for your kid. Prior to your trip, familiarize yourself with FAA guidelines and requirements as well as the air travel section in your manual to determine what’s best for your kiddo in the air and once you’ve arrived at your destination. I’ve relied on advice from the safety technicians on the Car Seats for the Littles Facebook page (you can also visit csftl.org). CSFTL describes itself as “community driven, education oriented organization, staffed by Child Passenger Safety Technicians from the United States and Canada, and EU Advocates.” Its guidance has answered many of my car seat-related questions, and I’m often surprised to learn what’s actually okay and what’s not. For example, we recently purchased a RideSafer Travel Vest for my older daughter to use in the rental car after a cross-country flight (she’s not old enough for a travel booster, and the vest is an approved option for our trip and her height and weight). I would never have found this option without CSFTL. Whatever your mode of transportation for this summer’s travels, remember to take deep breaths, stay safe, and (try to) enjoy the ride! —Laura Boycourt

A First Visit to the Gynecologist

T

aking your daughter to the gynecologist for the first time can be scary for mother and daughter, but it doesn’t have to be. Whether she has heavy periods, painful periods, mood-altering PMS, wants to get on birth control, or her primary care doctor suggests it’s time to go, eventually your daughter will need to visit the gynecologist. Before you or she gets too worried, here’s what you need to know to get the most out of her first visit. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommended that girls have their first visit between 13 and 15 years old. The main purpose is to begin a meaningful conversation that will continue for years to come. “If a young woman is planning on being sexually active it would be a good idea to have a gynecologic checkup and talk about prevention from sexually transmitted infections, contraception, and birth control,” says Joanne Hasman, certified nurse midwife at Special Beginnings Birth & Women’s Center. The sooner a provider gets to know your daughter, the more comfortable she will feel going forward. “For young girls, heavy periods and cramps are the 2 largest issues we see,” Hasman says. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists reports that many girls share the same health concerns—like cramps and problems with menstrual periods; acne; weight; sex and

sexuality; birth control; sexually transmitted infections; alcohol, drugs and smoking; and emotional ups and downs. They also tend to be interested in tips on making good lifestyle choices. As a parent it is essential that you take the time to ensure your daughter knows what to expect before her first visit to help foster this relationship with her provider. The first visit is basically a time to find out how to best take care of your body and learn what you can expect at visits down the road. First is the physical aspect. “We listen to the heart and lungs, check the thyroid, order bloodwork as needed and if someone has an issue we discuss it like long, heavy menstrual periods that need to be managed with medication, homeopathic remedies or herbal supplements,” says Hasman. Next up is the pelvic exam. You can explain this to your daughter beforehand, noting that the gynecologist will examine the vulva, vagina and cervix, then perhaps perform a pap smear (doctors won’t often recommend this until age 21 unless the patient is sexually active), and check internal organs with a gloved hand. The pap smear checks for abnormal changes in the cervix that could lead to cancer. “We used to tell women to get a pap smear every year but the recommendations have changed based on age and whether they have a history of HPV infection,” says Hasman. This may be an uncomfortable conversation to have with your daughter,

but the more you share with her, the better prepared she will be, and will help her form a good relationship with her doctor, and you. Here are some other tips to think about with your daughter. Get her Input • Does she want to see a male or female doctor? • Does she want to see your doctor or someone new? • Does she want you in the room with her? What will the Doctor Ask? • Medical history • When did you start your last period? • Are you sexually active? • Could you be pregnant? • Your period particulars—Heavy flow? Pain? Bits of Wisdom Be honest! Your gynecologist needs to know as much about your body as you do to help you care for it properly. Don’t worry about what your vagina looks like. Gynecologists have seen it all, and don’t care what you look like down there. It may be embarrassing at first, but once you get over it, it’s great to have a good doctor in your corner to help with any problems that arise down the road. —Jamie Lober

Narcan Training Saves Lives BY JOYCE HEID

O

pioid overdoses have reached a crisis level in Anne Arundel county. They occur in every zip code and in every income bracket. Fortunately, many people who could have been lost to overdose have been given a second chance because someone—whether a first responder, family member, friend or bystander—was able to administer Narcan. Naloxone (aka Narcan) is a drug that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose and can prevent death. Naloxone was administered in over 80 percent of all opioid overdoses that Anne Arundel County and City of Annapolis police have responded to since 2017. The Anne Arundel County

Department of Health recognized early on that there was the potential to save lives if naloxone was readily available to trained community members. In 2014 the department began offering community training on the use of intranasal naloxone, Since the training started, more than 6,000 naloxone kits have been distributed throughout the county. According to statistics provided by the Anne Arundel County Police Department Overdose Line, from January 2017 to May 14, 2019, there were 2,013 opioid-related overdoses in Anne Arundel County in which Narcan was administered. 214 of those were administered by a family member or friend, and 58 by a bystander. According to the Department of Health’s overdose response coordinator, Jasmine Pierce, the naloxone training prepares participants to respond effectively to an opioid overdose emergency: “An opioid overdose can be life-threatening and requires immediate emergency attention,” she says. “Recognizing the signs of opioid overdose is essential for saving lives. This training consists of defining what an opioid is; what naloxone is; how to identify signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose; and when to administer naloxone.” Through demonstrations, participants learn the five steps for responding to an opioid overdose, and are also instructed about Maryland’s Good Samaritan Law, which protects those who assist others in need of medical assistance in a drug or alcohol related emergency from criminal prosecution.

Naloxone is available at local pharmacies without a prescription. There is currently a statewide naloxone standing order that allows all Maryland-licensed pharmacists to dispense naloxone to anyone who may be at risk for opioid overdose or is in a position to assist someone believed to be experiencing an opioid overdose. Those who are interested in registering for naloxone training can find information on the Department of Health’s website, aahealth. org/events/oort, or on its Facebook page, facebook.com/aahealth. Community training sessions are free and typically scheduled in high risk areas where opioid overdoses are more prevalent. Pierce encourages groups to host a class, noting they can be scheduled at any local business or organization (for instance schools, churches, treatment centers, government organizations) that may want to have its employees or members trained. Dr. Judy Yu, dentist and mother of a teenage son, recently hosted a naloxone class at her practice for local members of the community, the NAACCC Health/Wellness Committee, and her Dental FX team in Pasadena. “Naloxone Training is imperative during opioid abuse epidemic,” she says. The training is also for anyone who works with the public, and it is recommended for treatment, recovery and transitional housing staff. To register and for more information, call the Naloxone Training Line at 410-222-1937, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

othing beats a doctor that you trust. For the more you enjoy seeing your doctor, the more you’re likely to go when you need to. When we look for a health care provider, regardless of the type of care we need, we all

look for the same attributes: someone who is knowledgeable, caring, patient and attentive. Which is why each year we poll our readers for input on the best health care providers in town, from dentists to chiropractors, pediatricians to physical therapists. We received hundreds of nominations recommending local practitioners and you took the time to comment on what makes them great providers. It’s easy to tell someone’s enthusiasm for a doctor when they praise: “He takes his time with my sons no matter how crowded the office is and really takes the time to get to know them and their needs.” Or this about a family dentist: “My dentist, and the whole practice, work hard to see each person as an individual. And they give back to the community.” This is an extensive list of doctors highly recommended by their patients. Those in large practices are listed under their practice name. Comments are included for providers who advertise. To see the complete list and more categories and comments, visit ChesapeakeFamily.com/favoritedocs. Eat Like A Local FOUR TASTY FOOD TOURS

By Katie Riley

F

ood tours have long been a staple of tourism in cities like New York and Philadelphia, but now you can find several tasty tours in the Baltimore/ Washington area that offer more than just a bite to eat. “Food tours have only been around for about twenty years, but there’s a lot of people in the world that love food and love to eat,” says David Saxe, Chief Eating Officer and founder of Mangia DC food tours. “Once people experience a food tour, they realize what a fun way it can be to explore a city,” Saxe says. On a food tour, one may visit several different restaurants or food merchants, try local specialties, and learn about the history of a particular neighborhood. The tastings are usually enough to make up an entire meal, all ages can participate, and it’s a unique way to

experience your city or hometown. In Frederick, people are discovering the city’s rich history and vibrant culinary scene through Taste Frederick’s popular three-hour tours. “In the past twenty years, Frederick’s culinary scene has exploded,” says Taste Frederick founder, Sarah Kurtanich. “Our distillery and craft brewing scene is growing, there are so many different food options, and best of all—it’s all within walking distance.” Food tours are not just for tourists either. “You don’t have to be a foodie or even a tourist to take a food tour. All you need is a sense of adventure and a love of food,” Kurtanich says. Hungry for more? Read on for four tasty tours that promise great food, interesting history and a fun afternoon.

Mangia DC Food Tours mangiadc.com Tickets: Adults: $68, Children: $49 Wednesday through Sunday

Scenes from Mangia DC Food Tours include wine tasting, prosciutto, pizza, kid-friendly treats, and corned beef with homemade pickles.

Voted one of the 15 Best D.C. tours by U.S. News and World Report in 2019, Mangia Food Tours consistently delivers top-notch food tours to hungry tourists and locals alike. The group’s original Mangia Italian food tour explores Dupont Circle’s Italian roots, when the neighborhood was home to the city’s Italian immigrant population. You’ll visit four different local Italian eateries, tasting treats like homemade pasta and cannoli. Mangia’s very popular Georgetown Foodie Tour explores Georgetown’s 1800’s history, highlighting when the neighborhood served as the city’s food commerce district, importing and exporting food via the C&O Canal. The tour goes off the beaten path of busy M street to sample food at more than five local eateries and hidden gems in the neighborhood. Taste local specialties like an award-winning half smoke or visit a bakery making scratch made treats that benefit our country’s military vets. The tour also stops in front of the former homes of John and Jackie Kennedy and Julia Child. Mangia DC Food Tours offers culinary events and experiences throughout the year, like wine and yoga evenings, and can coordinate private food tours for small groups. Founder David Saxe promises that the tours will satisfy even the hungriest traveler or local, “Mangia in Italian means ‘to eat’, and what better way to experience the flavor of a city than by doing just that?”

DATE NI G HT & MORE

stay inspired Will It Grill? The answers may surprise you… BY STEVE ADAMS

A

lthough Memorial Day—the second most popular grilling day of the year according to the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association—is behind us,

chances are pretty great that you’ve already thrown some hot dogs, hamburgers, or chicken on the grill at least once or twice this summer. If not, you’ll surely be marking July Fourth, Americans’ top day to grill, by hosting or attending a barbecue where you’ll most likely eat more of the same. Who knows, maybe you’ll even get a little wild with some shish kebabs or shiitakes. But if you’re already hot-dogged out and are ready to truly liven up your grilling game, here are some foods that you might not have thought of, answering the question of “Will it grill?” with a delicious and resounding, “Yes!”

GRAINS The USDA’s MyPlate recommends that the average adult consume six to seven servings of grains—half of them whole—per day (take that, Keto, Atkins and fad diets). Furthermore, one of the most recently published studies on carb consumption, published in the May issue of

Just slice, whether in halves or thinner, and place on a greased, preheated medium-heat grill for 2–3 minutes, rotating 90 degrees once if you’re looking for some nice checkerboard grill marks.

MAINS The USDA concluded that the average American consumed a record amount of red meat and poultry, a whopping 222.2 pounds, in 2018. So it’s safe to assume that American meat eaters are going to enjoy a lot of grilled meat this summer.
