100 Days of Summer ChesapeakeFamily. com/100daysofsummer

Summer is On!

W

hat a wild ride the last few months have been! From hunkering down at home, helping our kids learn remotely, a social upheaval long overdue, to a reopening of the world around us, these last few months have been anything but easy. Now summer is here and we’re all figuring out how to enjoy it best. While family favorite spots like the National Aquarium and the Maryland Zoo are opening, families may not be comfortable with the crowds, even at reduced capacity. Which makes this the perfect summer for getting outside. Fortunately for all of us, Maryland has a plethora of wonderful places to explore the outdoors—from state parks with waterfalls, camping spots and endless miles of hiking trails, to local parks where kids can explore pocket beaches and ride bikes, to getting out on the water on kayaks, canoes and paddleboards. You can find information about fun spots for such family adventures starting on page 22. For more fun summer excursions and outdoor adventures, follow along on with our 100 Days of Summer campaign online at

ChesapeakeFamily.com/100days. As you explore the outdoors (or the indoor activities opening up), take extra precautions to stay healthy this summer! That includes extra hand washing and wearing masks in public of course, but also keeping your kids up to date on their vaccinations (see page 11), and getting your family back to regular doctor, dentist, and orthodontist visits. If you are in need of new provider, you can find one in just about any area of health care in our Favorite Docs section, which starts on page 14. All of these practitioners have been nominated by members of the community who have been positively impacted by these providers. Have a wonderful summer, stay safe and healthy, and get outside!

Not So Different

riting has always been a part of Cyana Riley’s life. As a child growing up in Washington, D.C., she wrote poetry and later for her school’s newsletter. After attending George Washington University, Riley moved on to teach at a private preschool where she taught for six years before having her first son and becoming a stay-at-home mom. Her son, Hunter, is almost four now, and was her motivation to write “Not So Different.” “Children learn so much from reading books and I wanted to create a book where he could see his family structure in it,” says Riley. “I looked for books with biracial children and I didn’t find many, so I created my own. I knew we would have conversations about the differences of our skin tone and

hair and I wanted a tool that I could use as a visual when we had those conversations. “Not so Different” is geared toward kids from preschool to second grade. It’s a beautifully illustrated picture book that kids as young as two will enjoy. But, says Riley, “Depending where you are in having this conversation with your children, it can be used as a conversation starter for older children as well.” In the book, the main character talks about his differences. “He’s self-aware and confident about those differences, so throughout the story he points them out to his friends,” Riley says. “He also acknowledges the importance of being different and people learning from each other’s differences.” When Riley first showed her son the book, she says he identified

and named every character based on a person in his life. “It goes beyond skin color. One character has glasses, another has freckles, and someone in the book is in a wheelchair. So while the book focuses a lot on diversity, it also talks about inclusion and being friends with people who are different than you.” Riley says she has some other book ideas and is committed to creating books that represent black and brown children as the main character. She lives in Gambrills with her husband and two children, ages almost 4 and 9 months. “Not So Different” is currently available at notsodifferntbook.com, or at store.bookbaby.com. You can also find it locally at The Petal Pushers/Wild Flower shops in Arnold and Linthicum. JULY 2020

Post Covid Education

Monarch Academy Opens permanent eSchool program

M

onarch Academy in Annapolis has announced that it will offer a blended distance learning option for the 2020–2021 school year and continuing as a permanent program. The new eSchool @ Monarch Academy Annapolis will be 80% virtual and up to 20% in-classroom. It intends to “provide the same rigorous programs and services in a blended distance learning environment.” According to Kathy Lane, chief of educational services for The Children’s Guild Alliance, which operates Monarch Academy Annapolis, “We learned with

the COVID-19 school closures that some students truly excelled and thrived in a distance learning model.” She added that “This innovative option for families in the Annapolis area provides a new, parallel approach to our academic programming rooted in International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, arts integration and social-emotional skill building.” Monarch Academy Annapolis, which opened in 2017, is a primary performing visual arts school and follows the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, which challenges students to think critically and take responsibility for

their learning as they explore local and global issues. Registration is now open on a first-come, first-served basis for the new eSchool option. Additionally, students who apply for the 2020–2021 school year are eligible to attend the school’s Transformation Theatre Company, a performing arts summer camp. To apply to the existing or eSchool program, visit MonarchAcademy.org/ Annapolis/admissions/. For more information, call 443-678-3407 or email info@monarchacademyannapolis.org.

DIY BACKYARD FUN

L

et the kids stay cool in the backyard slip n slide and water blobs—which make for cool summer fun at home.

DIY SLIP N SLIDE

The summer backyard toy of our youth is pretty simple to make if you can't find one in stores or just feel like getting creative and thrifty! Here's a great tutorial from allthingsthrifty.com.

Maryland Interscholastic Cycling League Registration Opens July 1

T

he Maryland Interscholastic Cycling League (MICL) is a fun, safe and high-quality mountain biking program for students in grades 6 to 12. In 2017 Maryland joined the growing National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA), a youth development organization governing interscholastic mountain biking in the United States. “NICA teaches kids a lot of responsibility, it makes them stronger physically. Emotionally, they learn to overcome obstacles,” says Steve Harper, field course manager and director of the Anne Arundel Blur team. “And they develop this grit that teaches them that . . . you know, maybe you don’t get over the obstacle today. But if you try, maybe in a couple of days, you’ll be able to get over that obstacle.” Since racing in Maryland started in the fall of 2018, the league has grown to nearly 20 teams, including the Anne Arundel Blur and Eastern Shore Composite

Club. In addition, MICL also features the Girls Riding Together (GRiT) program, which gets middle school girls involved in racing and is “working to increase female participation through numerous outreach events throughout the state.” This year’s season will open for registration on July 1, and races will likely begin in September. Last year’s season consisted of four races around the state. “The team atmosphere, not just your individual team, but like the whole league is so cool,” says GRiT coach and mom Rachel Varn. “Everybody cheers so hard for kids that they don’t even know, from other teams.” You can see the league in action at ChesapeakeFamily.com/miclracing. For more information about the Maryland Interscholastic Cycling League, visit marylandmtb.org or follow them on Facebook (@MDinterscholasticMTB) and Instagram: @mdmtb_org.

In short, you'll need: • A Roll of clear plastic sheeting (clear is nicer than black, which can get very hot in the sun) • pool noodles • a hose • landscape pins or tent stakes • liquid soap

DIY WATER BLOB

What's a water blob, you ask? Water blobs are like an old school water bed, but for lounging on outside, or as kids will inevitably do, slipping and sliding about! You can make a giant water pillow for kids to slide and slop around on, or make personal mini blobs for each kid. What you'll need: • 4mil Plastic Sheeting (at least, the heavier the better), available at your local hardware store • Duct tape • Or, for better results and fewer leaks, an iron and some parchment paper. • Essentially, fold the plastic sheeting in half, to the size you want. Duct tape the sides together well. Tape the last side together, leaving a small opening for the hose. Fill with water, and then duct tape the hold closed. You can add food coloring to make it look more like the pool.

new & notable were new to her and on topics that invited self-discovery.” Symmes found that she was drawn to poetry, particularly free verse. When she courageously delivered a spoken slam poem in front of her class, she realized just how powerful her compositions were. She later shared them on social media and submitted them to Stigma Fighters, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people with mental illness share their stories. She eventually collected all of her poetry together and pursued publication, a process that took about a year and a half. When “The Path Towards Sunshine” debuted in spring 2020, Symmes instantly heard positive feedback. She’s happy to know her message of hope and selfacceptance resonates with readers. “You

don’t need to change yourself,” she says. “I want people to know that kind of lifestyle isn’t worth it. I want to show those in recovery and about to enter recovery they can come out of it.” Hill says she’s proud of Symmes but not at all surprised by her achievement of

Young Poet Chronicles Recovery from Anorexia in The Path Towards Sunshine

O

n her way to the hospital, Lorelai Symmes resigned she was going to die. At only 14 years old but 40 pounds underweight, she couldn’t foresee the recovery from anorexia nervosa that she would eventually make.

“I had pretty much told myself this was going to be it for me,” recalls Symmes, now 15 and a rising junior at Severna Park High School. She’s also the newly published

author of “The Path Towards Sunshine,” a collection of poems inspired by her recovery.

“It took a long time for my mindset to

change even after I got out of the hospital,” she continues. “My mind slowly started to change because I started to recognize all

the great things in my life.” During the three months she spent at The Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt, she took solace and strength from journaling, a practice she

continued even after she returned home and started school again.

“I’d never been the best at expressing my feelings,” she recalls. “I was very

perfectionistic, thinking I had to be perfect at everything. That played a lot into my overall mental health. By writing, it was expressing how I felt without putting pressure on myself. If I couldn’t say it to people, I could at least write it out so it wasn’t inside me.” The idea for her book started to take shape when she took a creative writing class at SPHS. Her teacher, Sabra Hill, took notice of the way writing affected her. “She never backed away from writing about her experiences with anorexia nervosa,” Hill

says. “She was still recovering, but she was becoming more self-aware, reflective and honest in her writing. I think many of the assignments pushed her to write in ways that

publication. “I think her book of poetry will help many other young people who struggle with body issues,” she says. “It really is ‘a

path towards sunshine’ for her and others.” Symmes acknowledged that her book has helped others understand not only her struggle but also the struggle faced by others with eating disorders. “A lot of people didn’t know what I was going through because I hid it so well,” she says. “When I went to the hospital, only a handful of people knew. Even my best friends didn’t understand. People with eating disorders are told to just eat, because people think it’s a choice. But really, it’s like any other disease: It’s controlling you and you don’t have a choice.” It’s not just a message that her peers need to hear—the 15-year-old poet recognizes that adults benefit from it, too. “Even adults these days, especially with diet culture, need to know that their weight doesn’t define them,” she says. “Everyone has value. You don’t

need to change yourself.” She knows her experience can be an inspiration for others—and that means a lot to her. “It’s the greatest thing to be able to direct people and see them do well because of your own help,”

“The Path Towards Sunshine” is available on Amazon and those who want to learn more about Symmes’ journey can follow her on Instagram. @lorelaisymmes —Dylan Roche

The Importance of Immunizations

W

e have stayed home to keep ourselves, our neighbors, and our hardworking doctors and nurses safe for so long now. Yet even as the world is opening its doors again, it’s difficult to think of taking your kids to the one place that we have been told to avoid at all costs—the doctor’s office. But maintaining routine health care is important during this time, especially regarding immunizations and your child’s vaccine schedule. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have long mandated a recommended immunization schedule. According to the World Health Organization, vaccines are “widely recognized as one of the world’s most successful and cost-effective interventions” when it comes to diseases. In fact, the WHO recognizes the importance of immunizations every year by celebrating the last week in April as World Immunization Week as a way to promote the use of vaccines and to acknowledge that vaccines save millions of lives every year. Dr. Katherine S.K. Edwards of Annapolis Pediatrics stresses the importance of vaccines. “If nothing else, this pandemic has brought into sharp focus the value of ongoing preventive medicine, something that has been mission central for pediatricians forever. Of all public health interventions that have been introduced over the past century, vaccination has made the most impact in saving lives. Sadly, pandemics in the past have often affected children more than other age groups, and the value of vaccinations cannot be overstated.” Keeping you and your child safe from exposure of COVID-19 while maintaining routine health care can be done safely and effectively with the new measures that all reopened medical offices have enacted during this pandemic. Many medical health practices are still offering TeleMedicine visits as well. For in-person visits, including immunizations, offices like Annapolis Pediatrics will ensure that proper social distancing from other patients is observed as well as making your time in the office over as quickly as possible. —Claire Dougherty Kovacs

Exercises

Ooh, My Back!

Try these tips to stretch it out while working from home.

W

orking from home has had it adjustments but I like to think I’m doing okay with it. I have turned my kitchen table into a work desk for me and a school station for the kids. When all three of us are on Zoom calls at the same time (Alex, I’ll take ‘Quarantine Catchphrases’ for $200, please), I’ll take my computer to the couch and sit there to do my work. Over these last few months, the go-between of the couch and the kitchen table have become a constant. Unfortunately, another constant has been back pain. It’s a new and persistent back pain that I’ve never experienced before. And even if it’s been a good, productive work day, my neck still feels tense and stressed. So like any good millennial, I turned to the internet to figure out why. And there I learned that words like ergonomic and lumbar support aren’t just fancy buzzwords to sell you a chair or desk or mattress. It all has to do with posture and the muscles that give you the ability to sit, stand, and lie down. Fun fact from the American Chiropractic Association: Without posture and the muscles that support it, you would simply fall to the ground. So while I’m not falling to the ground, thankfully, I am straining my muscles by sitting on my squeaky, wooden, straightbacked, antique dining room chair with little cushioning (oh swivel rolling office chair with adjustable lumbar support, how I miss thee) and overworking my back muscles to maintain upright or I’m doing the opposite by lounging on the couch and allowing the couch cushions to do the support work my own muscles are supposed to be doing. Our posture helps us with simple, yet incredibly important things like walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. The postural muscles align our bodies in ways and positions that put the least amount of strain on other muscle and ligament groups. Good posture aids us in healthy movement, weight-bearing activity and balance whereas poor posture can lead to muscle strain, weakening of the muscles, back and neck pain, and injury. So what you can do if you are experiencing pain related to poor posture or you simply want to improve it? Here are some tips for good posture, whether you’re working from home at your kitchen table or just enjoying binge watching your favorite show from the couch. —Claire Dougherty Kovacs

There are several simple exercises that will help strengthen your core muscles like isometric rows, forward fold, and planks. You can start here: https://backintelligence. com/exercises-to-strengthen-lower-back/ Resources like the American Chiropractic Association (acatoday.org) have checklists and questions to help determine if you are sitting/standing/lying down properly

In Your Office

While there is hope for the light at the end of the quarantine tunnel, this might be a good time to invest in a proper office chair. Though many jobs require several hours sitting at a desk, other jobs require lengthy time in which you are constantly standing or walking. In this case, starting off with proper equipment like good footwear is highly recommended. Wearing shoes with proper arch support and cushioning will help your body’s entire alignment. Studies have shown that wearing high heels for prolonged periods of time can put strain on your muscles, even as far up as your back, and can lead to improper posture.

Extra Support

The internet is rife with all sorts of back braces and posture supports, ranging from medical grade to DIY tutorials. Check out braceability.com If you think you need to see a medical provider for your back pain, a chiropractor is a good doctor to contact.

Bonus

It’s been said that having good posture makes you appear taller and slimmer, so I don’t think I need any more encouragement than that!

SIX TOP PICKS FOR SUMMER EXCURSIONS By Dylan Roche

A

h, summer—a season of warm weather, long days, sunny skies, green trees and endless opportunities to explore. It’s the perfect time for your family to leave the house and enjoy some exercise together outside. After all, the ongoing pandemic means there are still a lot of restrictions on this year’s social activities, so there’s no better time for your family to undertake an outdoor adventure, whether that’s hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking or maybe even nature watching. The best part is that you don’t have to travel too far when there are plenty of spots within a 30-minute drive of Annapolis to explore. What’s more, they all have plenty of space to roam so you can safely keep your social distance. While some of the amenities, such as visitor centers, may be closed (Check websites before you go), the parks themselves are still open.

JULY 2020

On that note, it’s probably worth going over a few reminders for health and safety: • Yes, you want to keep your social distance, but being outdoors is one of the healthiest activities you can do. In fact, the Rails to Trails Conservancy, a national organization dedicated to creating community around use of trails, reports that many people have turned to the outdoors during the pandemic for physical activity and mental respite. In March 2020, the use of trails was up by nearly 200 percent compared with the same time in 2019. • Keep your groups small. Ideally, it’s going to be just the people within your household, but if you choose to include a friend or two, make sure your group doesn’t exceed five or six people. When you’re in large groups, it becomes harder for you to keep your distance in public places, especially on trails where others

might be trying to pass you. • If you are passing someone on a trail, announce yourself by saying, “On your left.” Then pass them on their left-hand side. If you hear someone announce that they’re passing, keep as far to the right as you can. If you are walking or cycling as a large group, it’s best to go single file or two at a time so that there’s plenty of room for someone to pass you. • Carry hand sanitizer and moist wipes with you in case you need to touch a potentially germy surface. • It’s also important to observe other health and safety practices you should observe even when you aren’t in the middle of a pandemic: wear your helmet when cycling, wear sunscreen and insect repellant, and carry cold water to stay hydrated (especially on hot days). If you’re observing wildlife, remember that you can take photos, but don’t interact with or feed the wild animals.

Quiet Waters Park This 340-acre park along the South River boasts a forested 5.1-mile trail that’s wider than most you’ll see, making it a perfect place for social distancing. You can also switch from the paved path to trails through the woods with ease, and there are plenty of opportunities in the park to find a quiet little beach for the kids to play on. Quiet Waters has has a dog park and a dog beach, and.access to kayaks, paddleboards and canoes through Paddle or Pedal rentals.

Downs Park With a breathtaking view of the Chesapeake Bay, this 236-acre treasure has several piers where you can cast a line. You can also take advantage of other water access points for kayaks and canoes. Although there are no beaches for human swimmers, there are dog beaches were Fido can make a splash. And if hiking or biking is more your speed, there’s a 3.5-mile paved trail around the park’s perimeter, as well as more than a mile of natural trails through the surrounding forested areas.

Waterworks Park Waterworks Park is a hidden gem in Annapolis, featuring miles and miles of trails for hiking and biking through the woods, picnic spots, and three fishing ponds. The easiest spot to enter is on Bestgate Road, across from the parking lot nearest to Pet Smart. Housley loop, a one-mile trail loop up mildly sleep slopes through the woods. About halfway through that loop, you’ll make your way to the reservoir pond. You can hop on other trails to get around the lake or head back from there.

Eastern Neck Wildlife Refuge Located on the Chester River in Kent County, not far from Rock Hall, this 2,000-acre island provides habitat for all kinds of wildlife: 240 species of birds, plus a variety of mammals, amphibians and reptiles. As you walk or bike along the 4 miles of paved roads or walk the 3 miles of natural trails, you might see bald eagles, diamondback turtles, herons, egrets, deer, beaver, foxes or woodchucks. If you’d rather take in the sights by water, there’s a kayak/canoe launch you can take advantage of. Leashed dogs are welcome at all times. Don’t forget your bug spray!

Patapsco Valley State Park With more than 16,000 acres, including 32 miles of shoreline along the Patapsco River, this Maryland icon offers a place for hiking, biking, fishing and canoeing. The park boasts 200 miles of trails, including hiker-only trails and multi-use trails, which can be hilly in places (the park ranges from 52 to 534 feet above sea level). You can also hike over a historic swinging bridge and swim in the river, though be very careful where you swim, the current is very strong in some places. Go early, as the park often reaches capacity and will close for the remainder of the day.

Terrapin Beach Park This 276-acre park is a great place to observe waterfowl and plant life, whether you want to do it while you’re biking, hiking, fishing, kayaking or canoeing. The park boasts 4,000 feet of shoreline and 73 acres of wetlands, and the 3.25-mile oyster chaff walking trail weaves its way through wildflower meadows, wetlands, tidal ponds, woodlands and sandy beaches. The park also connects to the Cross Island Trail, a 6.5-mile paved and boardwalk path that traverses Kent Island. This trail is flat and wide, great for a family bike ride.

CHILL COCKTAILS TO COOL A SUMMER DAY by Ann Levelle

I

f you have been out drinking anywhere in Maryland in the last 20 years you’ll have probably tried an Orange Crush. The drink originated at the Harborside Bar & Grill in Ocean City in the mid-1990s, and has

since made its way around the state and beyond. Now it’s nearly ubiquitous at outdoor events and summer concerts in the state, and for good reason. It’s a simple drink—orange vodka, triple sec, the juice of one crushed orange and a splash of Sierra Mist—which might be exactly why it’s so popular. It’s simple, fresh and delicious Which is exactly what we want in a summer cocktail! Herewith, are four recipes for great summer cocktails that will make even your most socially distant evening memorable. We’ve even added a few non-alcoholic beverages for the nonpartaker, or, you know, the kids.
