The team at Chesapeake Family Life put together this guide that will point you in the direction of local summer fun. We are fortunate to live in an area with lots of outdoor opportunities as well as museums and historical sites. You could spend all summer just exploring locally and part of the fun is that you can drive, walk, go by boat, bus or train. While you are out on your adventures, join us for a summer scavenger hunt. You could win prizes. You will discover some little known destinations and some favorites. Just snap a photo while you are there and tag us #CFLSummer22. Go to ChesapeakeFamily.com/ SummerFun22 for more details. Dana Dino, pictured here, will be out and about over the summer. Every week starting June 13 you will see a photo of Dana and have the chance to guess where she is. Correct guesses will be entered to win prizes. Some of the prizes include tickets to: • Watermark Cruises • Eastport A Rockin • Main Event • Monster Mini Golf

Here are three things that will keep you informed over the summer:

itizen science volunteers are often essential participants in monitoring and collecting scientific data. They are observers of many of the different habitats and species that Maryland scientists are studying. No previous background skills are required, only an interest in the natural world. Participation in scientific studies allows volunteers to become involved in the data collecting process. Plus volunteers have the opportunity to learn more about ongoing scientific studies and the long term impacts revealed in the studies being done.

Would you like to participate?

study turtles, butterflies, birds, forests, and vernal pools. Vitali says that all that is necessary to become a Citizen Scientist “is the desire to further human understanding of the world around us.” For the Bluebird study the Citizen Scientists visit nesting boxes on a regular basis to count eggs, then hatchlings and then until the birds are fledglings. This has been an ongoing study lasting over many years. The turtle monitoring program, now in its 32 year, is one of the oldest in the United States. Volunteers track turtle movement via tiny radio transmitters attached to the turtles, on a weekly basis April through hibernation season around November. Citizen scientists help provide the data needed to monitor changes to animal and bug populations across the Jug Bay environment. In the case of the turtles that includes home range size,

Students interested in careers in science should consider volunteering as a citizen scientist. The experience is invaluable. Some training is usually required, but more than anything, these organizations need to depend on you to show up and do the work you have been assigned. Read the requirements carefully before volunteering for any position. Other groups looking for volunteers include: •Severn River Association (SRA) and their “floating classroom.” Students get a chance to learn about conditions in the water as they use water quality monitoring equipment to check on oxygen levels, pH, temperature, salinity and clarity. severnriver.org/sra-floatingclassroom •Hawk Watch (part of the Maryland BioDiversity Project) hawkcount.org/ siteinfo.php?rsite=272 •Jug Bay Citizen Science Opportunities jugbay.org/volunteer •Maryland BioDiversity Project - an organization focused on cataloging the living things of Maryland. Flag Ponds Nature Park Park Spotlight

F

lag Ponds Nature Park has a variety of terrain on over 500 acres that is great for family exploration. From the parking lot it is an easy stroller and wheelchair accessible half-mile walk through the woods to a wide, sandy beach. Trails on either side of the beach wander past two different ponds, a patch of paw paw trees and a historic fishing shack that helps tell the story of an industry long gone.

Beach

You might spot people walking along the shoreline with strange scooper looking contraptions with very long handles. They are looking for sharks’ teeth and other Miocene fossils. There are bits of shells all along the beach that are fun to look through. Your patience could be rewarded with a nice find, or wade into the water a bit and try your hand at shifting through the sand. The beach is also a very beautiful place to sit, relax and enjoy being near the water. Bonus points for the restrooms and outdoor shower on the boardwalk near the beach. Wash off the sand, grime and sweat before getting back into your car.

History

During the first half of the 1900s Flag Ponds was a major “pound-net” fishery. Pound nets are a series of fences in the water that funnel fish towards the shore so that they can be more easily caught. Croaker, trout and herring were caught there and shipped to markets all the way to Baltimore. The little shack you see is a replica of one of three houses that fishermen lived in during the fishing season. It was known as “Buoy Hotel,'' and you can take a peek in the windows to see how the fishermen lived while they stayed there. Various artifacts line the perimeter of the shack and will give you an idea of the tools and methods that fishermen used.

Trails

Accessed from the path to the beach, the Duncan’s Pond Trail leads to an observation blind and deck where many different bird species can often be observed. From the observation blind you can take the North Ridge Trail which wraps through the woods away from the beach. This path is not stroller accessible and has a completely different feel than the beach area. Keep your eyes out for turtles and other wildlife who eat the pawpaws that ripen in the early fall.

Meet the Animals and Learn about Farming

A

by Donna Jefferson

family visit to a farm to meet the animals is the perfect place for kids to blow off a little steam and see some critters up close and personal. Maryland has over two million acres of farmland, which amounts to 32% of the total land in the state. If you haven’t taken your littles to a farm, it’s time to see what’s going on with all that farmland. Leave your dogs at home and remember to dress appropriately. There’s a good chance that you will get dirty. BAUGHER’S

Baugher’s Petting Zoo started with a few farm animals in 1987. Now visitors

can walk in the pasture where the most friendly farm animals roam around at will. Small bags of feed are available for purchase so that kids can enjoy sharing with barnyard friends. A few animals are behind fences with educational signs where you can learn more about their behavior. Two playground sets are nearby so that human kids can get their wiggles out before visiting the animals. There is no admission fee. Baugher’s Orchards, on over 200 acres, grows strawberries, cherries, peaches, plums, nectarines, apples and pumpkins for u-pick customers. A – Alpha B – Bravo C – Charlie D – Delta E – Echo F – Foxtrot G – Golf

When he was a boy over 130 years ago, before the airplane was invented, aviation pioneer Glenn Martin made a wind wagon using his wood wagon, broom stick and sheet. The sheet captured wind and his invention “flew” down dirt roads with wind power. Imagine and draw future flying machines.

Summer Playground Crawl The most Summer friendly playgrounds in Maryland

S

by Katrina Kessler

ummertime is a prime season to be outside and playing. But as the temps rise, sometimes it’s almost too hot to play outside, especially in areas with little-to-no shade or metal playground equipment. No worries, with this list of the Top 10 Summer Playgrounds, we’ve got you (and the playgrounds) covered! Check out our favorite spots to play in the shade or water to keep you cool all summer long.

Shaded Spots Kiwanis Wallace Park

3300 Norberts Way Ellicott City MD 21043 This is one of the best playgrounds to go to if you have a toddler and want shade. This playground is fenced and smaller so it is a really great option for caregivers who want to be able to keep an eye on their child no matter where they stand. Although the playground is small, it is fully covered with a large sunshade. There are also shaded picnic tables under trees next to the playground. This playground is not crowded on the weekdays but there are sports fields next to it so it could possibly be more crowded on the weekends.

Tire Park

1101 Hilton Avenue, Catonsville Tire Park is a large area of the Patapsco State Park containing 2 playgrounds. During the summer the trees are in bloom and provide a lot of natural shade which is why this is a summer favorite!

26

High Ridge

10100 Superior Avenue, Laurel Very large shade covering almost the whole structure so it is perfect for a summer visit. This playground also is relatively quiet with nearby trails and fields to explore. There is a shaded pavilion and bathroom nearby.

Cabin John

7400 Tuckerman Lane, Bethesda Surrounded by trees, it is a popular spot but there are 7 different playgrounds sections so it is extremely easy to spread out and have space. There are also trails to explore nearby.

M A RY L A ND SU MMER F U N GU I DE MARYLAND EART H DAY G UI DE chesapeakefamily.com M ARYL AND SUMMER FUN GUIDE 2022

Granville Gude Park

8300 Mulberry Street, Laurel Major shade alert! Plopped in the middle of the woods makes it the perfect spot for a sunny afternoon. There are also pretty lake views. There's a bathroom in a building right next to the playground.

Water Features Glenn Dale Splash Pad 11901 Glenn Dale Blvd, Glenn Dale There is a pool with a mushroom waterfall and shallow beach area and a regular splash pad with fountains in the ground squirting water up for children to run over. The coolest area is the toddler water park with a wading area, splash fountains, a boat to climb through and slides! Prices are free for 2 and under, $6/ child and $7/adult. Don’t forget it is closed on Mondays!

Millard Park

7872 Cooper Drive, Sykesville This splash pad has multiple fountains shooting water from the ground for the children to run on. It also has various standing structures with a waterfall feature where children can run under to stay cool. What makes this playground worth the trip is the fact that there are 3 other playgrounds all within walking distance of the splash pad.

Bailey Park near Colorburst Park Splash Pad

Walker Mill Regional Park

8840 Walker Mill Road Capitol Heights This playground is filled with endless climbing, jumping and exploring opportunities for kids of all ages. It has a woodland theme with animal structures throughout the park. A cool feature is the water misters in the ground. If you press the misting pads, water will squirt out. This is a great option to cool down in the summer and keep the children entertained.

Bailey Park Address: 10275 Wincopin Circle, Columbia Colorburst Splash Pad Address: 6100 Merriweather Drive, Columbia Bailey Park is geared toward older toddlers with lots of challenging opportunities to climb. Although this playground is not shaded, there is a slight breeze from the lake that can be felt in the right moment. A walk around the lake would be fun as well but keep in mind the lake does not have a barrier and if you have a small child who likes to run, you may want to bring a stroller. Head over to the new Colorburst Park Splash Pad in Merriweather District which is a 15-20 minute walk or a 5 minute drive from Bailey Park. This splash pad is great for little ones as it has over a dozen water fountains on the ground where children can take their own space and pace as they play.

Chesapeake Sensory Plaza at Rockfield Park 501 E Churchville Road, Bel Air This new 5,000 square foot water play space has many opportunities for children to cool off in the water while learning about the Chesapeake Bay. There are sensory plaza pumps, which can be pumped or pushed by the children to start the water flow.

Awesome Dog-Friendly Destinations in Maryland Take Your Doggie Friends With You by Nancy Parode

M

aryland is an incredibly dog-friendly state. Dog parks abound, and there are plenty of places where your furry pal can swim. If your dog enjoys hanging out with you in breweries or ballparks, we’ve got you

covered there, too. Here’s a glimpse of the many ways you can have fun with your dog in the Old Line State.

Whether you’re in a bustling Maryland city or the quiet countryside, you’re probably near a dog park or beach. Some dog parks are restricted to member dogs and their owners, and others are reserved for city or county residents’ use. However, several of Maryland’s most popular dog parks and beaches are open to all, but charge a daily entry fee to help maintain the park.

Dog Parks and Beaches Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis ($6/vehicle) features a

large, shady space with sections for large and small dogs. There’s a handy seasonal dog washing station near the dog park. Even better, Quiet Waters’ dog beach is a short stroll away. Turn left at the bottom of the trail or steps to reach the dog beach.

Ellicott City’s Worthington Dog Park ($5/day) is just a short

drive from the city’s historic downtown area. The dog park has areas for

28

small and large dogs. Howard County maintains this dog park well, closing off a third section of the park for replanting as needed so that dogs always have a lush lawn to play on.

Downs Park’s dog beach ($6/ vehicle) is one of central Maryland’s best known canine swimming areas. Located in Pasadena, this dog beach offers a lovely view of the Chesapeake Bay and plenty of space for dogs to splash and swim. Although you’ll need to pay a $35 annual membership fee to use Paw Point Dog Park at Lake Roland, it is

money well spent if you live nearby. This large lakeside dog park has just one fenced section, but it’s quite large. This popular, award-winning dog park also features a seasonal dog beach, plenty of open space, and nice views of the lake. It’s a good spot for birdwatching, too. Remember to bring proof of your dog’s rabies vaccination and current dog license. You’ll need some cash to pay the park entry fee, too. Keep in mind that most dog parks do not allow young children to enter, and some restrict use to adults 18 and older.

The Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail, part of Gunpowder Falls

State Park, stretches 19.7 miles from Ashland in Baltimore County to the Pennsylvania state line. This rail trail is extremely popular with hikers, cyclists, horseback riders, and dog lovers. Hike the whole trail or just a section — either way, you’ll enjoy some lovely views and encounter friendly folks. (Tip: There are several parking areas along the trail. If you can’t find space in a parking lot, consider heading to the next one.)

Harford County’s MA and PA Heritage Trail, another

State Parks and Rail Trails Maryland’s state parks and rail trails are very pet friendly. Some even offer swimming opportunities for dogs. Patapsco Valley State Park, which encompasses 16,000 acres in Baltimore, Howard, and Carroll Counties, is a great place to walk and hike with your dog. Several trails offer access to the Patapsco River. Swimming is permitted; use caution near rapids and sharp rocks.

Calvert Cliffs State Park ($5/

in-state vehicle) in Lusby features 13 miles of trails (some trails include boardwalks in marshy areas) and a small but pretty sand beach known for its many seashells and fossils. Visitors of all ages love to hunt for shark’s teeth and shells.

rails-to-trails project, consists of 3.3 miles of trail in Bel Air and 1.7 miles of trail in Forest Hill. The Bel Air section of trail includes the MA & PA Dog Park, a good place to stop if your pup wants to socialize with trail buddies. Check the park’s website before leaving home for up-to-date information. Remember to bring cash to pay the park entry fee. State parks are home to many species of wildlife, including bears, snakes, lizards, frogs, and deer, so state parks require that dogs stay leashed unless they are swimming in designated areas.

Variety is the (Dog) Spice of Life

Of course, there are times when you and your dog want to do something a little different. Here in Maryland, that’s easily accomplished. You can find 5K races, doga classes (yoga with your dog), and dog-friendly festivals, to name a few. For fun on the water, Whoofs on the Wharf is open at Edgewater’s Pier 7 from late May through October. You can rent kayaks, paddleboards, and canoes that will accommodate you and your dog. Dog life jackets are available, and you can buy Fido a doggie ice cream after your paddle. Whoofs on the Wharf also offers Paint Your Pet events. Reservations for rentals are required,

and a staff member can give you tips on canine kayaking best practices. You are welcome to rent equipment whether or not you have a dog. If your pup is a baseball fan, head to

Woof Wednesdays at Baysox Stadium. Dogs are welcome to cheer (bark?) on the Bowie Baysox at every Wednesday home game. Be sure to bring your dog leash — dogs must be on leashes in the ballpark — and proof of your dog’s vaccination status. Canine Baysox fans and their humans will find water bowls in the stadium concourse and a pet relief area outside the stadium.

Draft doggie beer? That’s right!

Chesepiocc Real Ale Brewery in Crofton offers a family-

friendly atmosphere, specially made dog biscuits, and a non-alcoholic, yeast and hop free beer brewed especially for dogs. Ingredients include barley, bacon, peanut butter, and other flavors dogs love. There’s a grassy area in front of the taproom’s door if you prefer to sit outside. Stop by after a hike or swim and raise a glass to your fourlegged friend.

Camping 101

Tips for a Successful First Camping Trip

A

great camping trip with kids requires lots of advance planning and a go-with-the flow attitude once you are there. Be prepared and you won’t have much to worry about when little things go array.

These tips will help your first camping trip be a success

1

Let your kids help with the planning.

The more they know what to expect, the more excited they will be and more anxious to help. No one likes surprises well almost no one. With some prompting from you, your kids can help decide: • Where to go - pick some place you know for the first time • What to eat - snacks and easy meals to prepare or take pre-packaged • What to do - games, swimming, fishing, exploring • What to take - one lovey

32

2

Packing

Take more clothes for each child than you think you’ll need. Let them carry and be responsible for one backpack each that includes their lovey, a flashlight or headlamp, one snack, one water bottle,

one change of clothes. Do you need to bring a portable toddler potty?

3

Sleeping

Make the tent very cozy. Bring extra blankets if you think it will be cold. Wear the kids out with flashlight tag, sing songs around the campfire, pick up wood,.

4

Play

Plan for play, look for bugs, scavenger hunt, get dirty, hiking - but not too much, sing songs and allow kids time to explore and discover their new outdoor environment. Except for guided suggestions and making sure

chesapeakefamily.com M ARYL AND SUMMER FUN GUIDE 2022

your kids are safe, let your kids be kids. Relax, join in and have fun watching them explore.

5

Stop

This is the hard one. Stop while everyone is still having fun. You will need to get back to your regular routine so whatever it is that you and your kids are enjoying, stop and go home while it is still fun. Nothing worse than clearing out a campsite and picking up with whiny, overtired kids complaining. That way you will have a lot to look forward to on your next adventure.

Places to go camp

Maryland State Parks are great for first time campers. They are inexpensive, have common restroom facilities, a picnic table and fire ring at each campsite and aren’t too far from home. Most of the parks have daily ranger programs for kids. Here are a few parks you might want to explore.

SUMMER

RESOURCE DIRECTOR Y

Elk Neck State Park

If you want to camp near the Chesapeake Bay, Elk Neck is the place for you, offering expansive views of the Elk River and the Bay. There are sandy beaches, a lighthouse, 250 campsites, 16 cabins (nine mini/camper cabins and seven rustic cabins), a youth group camping area, park store, playground and a nature center. https://dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/ Pages/central/elkneck.aspx

Patapsco Valley State Park

Recreational opportunities include hiking, fishing, camping, canoeing, horseback and mountain bike trails. It features a view of the historic Thomas Viaduct, the world’s longest multiplearched stone railroad bridge, located in the park’s Avalon Area. You also can walk across the 300-foot suspension swinging bridge in the Orange Grove Area. There are five different campgrounds for tent camping. https:// dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/pages/ central/patapsco.aspx

Tuckahoe State Park
