Ahead of the Game
L
ast spring my four-year-old started playing soccer. It was, of course, adorable, and I loved watching the little kids travel in a pack around the ball. While I wondered how on earth a coach can combat that phenomenon, it occurred to me that many of these kids haven’t seen a real soccer game, so it’s no wonder they just head straight for the ball (or for the opposite end of the field where they’ve found a good patch of dandelions to pick). Given my revelation, I thought it would be a perfect time to take the family to a professional game. Having spent my own youth playing year-round soccer, I’d wanted to do this anyway, but I was trying my best not to push them into my sport. Sadly, we didn’t go. It was too much money to spend given the girls weren’t that interested, anyway. What I should have done, yet forgot about by fall, was to take them to a Navy women’s soccer game, or even a high school game. It would’ve shown them what the sport is all about and not cost us a ton of money. I mention this as a reminder to everyone that whatever sports you and your family already enjoy, or just want to
check out, you live in the right place. According to Steve Adams, in his article on page 12, there’s an amateur level team in just about every major sport you can think of between Baltimore and Washingotn, D.C., and they’re all familyfriendly and fun to watch. So while you’re looking for something fun to do as a family this spring, put a game or two on your calendar. And since we’re on the topic of calendars, I would also like to remind you to add to our Camp fairs to your March calendars. Our first Camp Fair will be March 2 at Annapolis Area Christian School; and our second on March 23 at the Chesapeake Arts Center in Brooklyn Park. If you haven’t been before, they’re great for getting to know what camps are out there and what they have to offer. Plus the kids have fun! We hope to see you there!

P
i Day probably isn’t on your Google calendar. But if there’s ever a time to celebrate a math holiday, this is it. Pi Day is March 14, or 3.14, the number representing pi, aka the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Even if you scarcely remember the symbol from 8th grade geometry, the best part about Pi Day is there’s an obvious way to celebrate: pie. We’ve rounded up 3.14 ways to celebrate Pi Day using easy pie recipes that you can make with the kids. They might even earn some bonus credit with their math teacher! —Ann Levelle

Facing Addiction, Together Local advocacy groups join to help solve the crisis in their community. BY JOYCE HEID

hen Denise Williams’s children were younger, the Pasadena mother did everything she could for them. She went to concerts, track meets and did all the things good moms do. She had two amazing sons and never thought she would lose one, much less both, to addiction. Ryan was a star athlete in high school and according to her, “He put Northeast on the map for his outstanding running ability.” His twin brother, Matthew,
was a talented musician. Typical teenagers, they experimented with alcohol at parties, but there were no major indicators of the nightmare that would follow. After college, failed relationships and financial situations drove Ryan to seek an escape from his problems. His brother, who was already dabbling in drugs to deal with his own mental health issues, introduced him to heroin as a coping mechanism. Recent headlines often highlight an opioid crisis. But Debi Keane says that the tragedy of addiction in our community is nothing new. Keane is chair of Facing Addiction Anne Arundel, the local chapter of the national nonprofit committed to bringing together resources to reduce the human and social costs of addiction. “Addiction has had a strong hold on Anne Arundel County for a long time,” she says, “manifesting as alcoholism, cocaine/crack addiction, and prescription abuse/addiction. The current opioid crisis has spotlighted the crisis due to the fatal overdoses from fentanyl opioids.” Although addiction is nothing new, Keane notes that “the age of the user has progressively gotten younger. The potency of the drugs has gotten much stronger, i.e. the introduction of fentanyl has changed the game of addiction.” That game changer extends to treatment as well. “Where in the past addicts would hit ‘bottom’ and seek treatment,” Keane says, “the fentanyl is actually killing people before they have a chance to hit that bottom. However, I believe that the tide may start to change with the new awareness that people are dying and that addiction knows no boundaries.” Addiction does not limit its destruction to the user. Keane describes it as a “generational trauma” due to the record number of children impacted by it. “Those with fatal overdoses are leaving children behind in record numbers. Some of those children are lucky enough to have extended family take them in, the rest are going into the foster system and taxing an already overburdened Child Protective Services division of the Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services.” Another organization, Recovery Anne Arundel, was established in 2008 as a small group of stakeholders in the community interested in becoming change agents for individuals in or seeking recovery. Today the organization has grown to over 40 active

members and over 100 supporters working together to educate and empower others on the experience and process of recovery, through advocacy and special events. Facing Addiction is under the umbrella of Recovery Anne Arundel. Both focus on the Community by advocating and engaging family and loved ones impacted by addiction. Our power is in our experience,” says Keane. “We had to navigate the labyrinth of seeking help for a loved one and are trying to ease that path for others similarly affected. We want to streamline the process.” Recovery Anne Arundel is also affiliated with Serenity Sistas, an Annapolis nonprofit that offers supportive housing to individuals in recovery from substance misuse. Angel Traynor, director of Serenity Sistas and coordinator of Recovery Anne Arundel, saw an opportunity in late 2016 to partner with the national arm of Facing Addiction on its new initiative concerning community engagement. Anne Arundel County was chosen as one of the first 15 communities nationwide to start the pilot “Community Project.” The Community Project will bring together resources to combat the addiction crisis, including securing increased localized funding, training advocates, working with elected officials, providing media guidance to highlight solutions, and working with those in the community directly affected by addiction. As part of this outreach, they are inviting community members to attend open meetings to learn more. “The sessions are designed to provide an opportunity for people who have loved ones in active addiction or in recovery to share what obstacles they’ve encountered, what supports they most need, and what has worked well for them,” according to Keane. The meetings will include information about local resources that can be helpful, but organizers are also hoping attendees will contribute information that might be helpful to others. Keane says based on what is shared at the meetings, organizers will then develop
resource guides and seek new ways to get the best information available to the people who need it. By informing public officials the specific needs of the communities, Keane hopes that programs can be tailored to meet them head on. In addition to the open forum, each session will begin with a free NARCAN training class, which will teach the use of intranasal naloxone, a prescription medicine that when used properly, can reverse an opioid overdose and prevent death. The training is recommended for at-risk individuals, family members, friends and the associates of any individual who is using and at risk of overdosing not just on heroin, but prescription opioid pain medications as well. After completing the training, participants will receive a free naloxone kit to administer to victims of an opioid overdose. No one likes to think addiction can strike their family. Today, Denise Williams is an active member of Recovery Anne Arundel. She urges parents, families and friends to attend the Community Listening Sessions. “Knowing what I know today, addiction is not something that is chosen. The only way for it to stop is for there to be no new users,“ says Keane. “Come to the meetings to learn what you can do now. Even if your child is in elementary school, you have to start the discussion. Most middle schoolers are already testing the waters—they have tried alcohol, pot, Juuls. [With my kids] I thought, ‘It’s just a phase.’ No one told me drugs today are more potent, more addictive. This is real. Come to the meetings to get educated and understand how addiction works. Maryland offers virtually limitless spring sporting events for families to enjoy. By Steve Adams
G
rowing up in Annapolis as a sports-loving kid, it was always a treat to make the trip to D.C. or Baltimore to watch a major league sports game. There aren’t many areas of the country with so many professional teams within an hour’s drive, and I undoubtedly took it for granted when I got to watch one play. Once I was old enough to start buying my own tickets and figuring out my own transportation, however, I quickly discovered that there aren’t many areas in the country with so many high-quality yet budget-friendly options on the semi-pro and collegiate level to choose from as well. In fact, Maryland’s virtual embarrassment of sports riches means that there’s not only a good chance that you can find an upcoming game to attend in whatever sport strikes your fancy, but also that you can avoid spending an arm and leg on it. Plus, there’s more going on in the local sports world in the spring than at any other time of year!

BASEBALL You’re surely familiar with the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles, whose home openers are on March 28 and April 4, respectively, and whose many promotions include: • Impressive kids’ membership clubs. The $20 Jr. Nationals Kids Club offers a bunch of swag to its 4- to 12-yearold members, while the $25 Junior Orioles Dugout Club includes swag and tickets to 6 pre-selected home games. • Discounted pricing on package, group, and kids’ tickets, hopefully including a repeat of the O’s Kids Cheer Free program, an initiative that allowed adults in the Upper Deck to bring up to two children 9 and under with them for free. • Giveaways, theme nights and Friday night fireworks. And you’ve probably heard of, or maybe even seen, at least one of the many minor league teams that offer affordable, family-friendly entertainment, including giveaways and
theme nights that most definitely rival the pros, at unique ballparks scattered throughout the state: • The Aberdeen IronBirds, who play 38 homes games beginning June 14. • The Delmarva Shorebirds, Frederick Keys, and Hagerstown Suns, each open on April 4, which we may safely deem “the biggest day in Maryland AA baseball.” • The Bowie Baysox, whose first of 12 home stands begins on April 11. There are also many great under-theradar non-professional options as well, including: • Navy Men’s Baseball, which began its season in mid-February but will play a whopping 25 home games—all of which have mid-afternoon start times and offer free sit-wherever-youwant admission—at beautiful Max Bishop Stadium in March and April. • University of Maryland Baseball, which hosted its first homestand in late February and has 21 total home games left to play at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.

• Navy Women’s Club Softball, which won the National Club Softball Association National Championship last year and will play eight more home games (also free!) at its just-offthe-yard field. Looking at this list, it’s clear that you could easily consume a nearly infinite amount of “the national pastime” this spring. But if you’re more into what many consider Maryland’s national pastime, you're covered there, too. LACROSSE You likely know about the Chesapeake Bayhawks, the most successful team in the 15-year history of Major League Lacrosse. They first played in Baltimore (2001–2005), then Washington (2007– 2009), and now call Annapolis home. They play eight home games at Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium each season, and feature a family-friendly and lively environment. Plus there’s never a lack of goals and they end each game with fireworks! If you don’t want to wait until June 29 when the Bayhawks host their first home faceoff, you can catch some high-quality lacrosse with some of the best college lacrosse teams, both men’s and women’s, in the country. • University of Maryland—The Terps men’s and women’s teams regularly rank among the nation’s top ten, and have 5 and 6 remaining home games, respectively, at Capital One Field. Tickets range from $5 to $20. Baltimore also happens to be hosting the women’s Big Ten Tournament in May. • U.S. Naval Academy—Admission to men’s and women’s home games, played at Navy Stadium, is $10 and $0, respectively. The men have 6 games remaining; the women, 8. • Johns Hopkins—The men’s and women’s teams have 6 and 8 home games left, respectively, at Homewood Field. Women’s games are free, men’s are $10–$15. • Loyola—Admission to the 5 remaining men’s games and 7
women’s games, played at Ridgely Athletic Complex, ranges $7 to $15. Finally, if you’re hoping to watch some sports that are a bit less historic—at least in the U.S.—our region won’t leave you wanting. HOCKEY Not much compares to the start-tofinish excitement and energy of a Washington Capitals home game, and there are just 8 remaining in March and early April—plus, hopefully, some playoff games. Maryland is also the home to the North American Hockey League’s newest team, the Black Bears, who have 6 remaining home games at Piney Orchard Ice Arena in Odenton. The Bears offer a military discount on all tickets, which range from $8 to $15. BASKETBALL The Washington Wizards haven’t had the greatest season, but an NBA game is a high-energy experience, regardless of who’s playing, and ticket prices to the Wiz’s 12 remaining home games should be nice and cheap. Plus the Washington Mystics host their first home tipoff, on June 1. Of course there are other options:
• The Capital City Go Go, of the NBA G League, will play 4 more games this season. The first is on March 3 and tickets start at $49. Another great option is our local indoor soccer team, the Baltimore Blast, who have three home games remaining at SECU Arena at Towson University this season. The Washington Spirit, of the National Women's Soccer League will play 12 home games at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds starting in late spring. Preseason games start March 30. Building Birding Kids Getting your kids into birding can create a lifelong passion, an interest in science, and a great chance to get outside together. by Melanie Lynch
I
t’s spring and the birds are on their way back to our yards, parks and skies. Birding can be a very spontaneous pastime, requiring very little financial investment, and it’s a great hobby to share with your children. A field guide, some binoculars, a notebook (if you don’t want to mark up a field guide like I do), and a little patience are all you need. GETTING STARTED For beginning birders, there is one book in particular that I highly recommend, “Stokes Beginner’s Guide to Birds: Eastern Region” by Donald and Lillian Stokes. National Geographic also has a good field guide, along with the well-known Roger Tory Petersen guides, but if you really want to go for the gold, “Sibley’s Guide to Birds” has become the birders bible. As for binoculars, finding some that fit your kids is key. For the toddler set, any sturdy set from a toy store will do. As children get older, weight is an important factor to consider, as kids won’t enjoy lugging around heavy binoculars. Have kids try out the binoculars to make sure they’re comfortable.

FEED THE BIRDS The easiest way to see birds up close is to bring them to you. Choose a bird feeder that’s small and, most importantly, squirrel-proof. Squirrels will not only eat all the seed but will not allow the birds to come to the feeder. Birds in our neck of the woods all love sunflower and safflower seeds. You can buy hulled sunflower seed if you are concerned about having to sweep up discarded sunflower hulls or live in an apartment where being a good neighbor is important. Woodpeckers and blue jays love peanuts, goldfinches love thistle seed. Bluebirds find mealworms a real treat. Another small and inexpensive feeder option is a suet cake. The suet snaps into a small hanging cage (preferably hung from a post rather than a tree) and attracts birds like nuthatches and woodpeckers. Suet is an important energy source for birds in the winter. It may take a few days for the birds to discover your feeder, but once they do you will find the most activity will be in the mornings or late afternoons or in bad weather.
family fun WHO IS WHO? Now that you are armed with birds, book and binoculars, it’s time to figure out who is visiting you. CRITERIA USED TO ID BIRDS What time of year is it? Many birds are migratory which means they move in large flocks in search of food and refuge from winter cold. During the winter, not only do the Canada geese winter over in the company of millions of tundra swans and snow geese, but we will see a large number of bald eagles come down from the Northeast and Canada. Sometimes there is a large invasion (or irruption) of a specific breed of bird. Most notably we have seen very marked irruptions of snowy owls (think Harry Potter’s Hedwig) although scientists haven’t quite figured out why this happens. Smaller common winter birds include Carolina chickadees and dark eyed juncos. Most well known and anticipated in this area is the return of the osprey, who spend their winter months in South/Central America and start moving back through the Bay in late February to reunite with their mates and raise a new batch of two to four youngsters. How big are they? Use common birds like sparrows, cardinals, robins and crows as a reference when trying to identify a bird you’re unfamiliar with. How do they fly? Some birds fly in swooping patterns (chickadees), some wobble as they soar in circles (vultures). Some birds are champion soarers, while some seem to flap furiously to stay aloft. What do they sound like? If you are keeping score, (and some birders do) identifying a bird by its call counts just as much as ID’ing it visually. Sometimes you simply won’t see them, especially if they are foraging in ground cover. Especially in spring when they are locating a mate, many birds will often do a call and response, meaning they will call out and if you listen carefully, you will hear another one answer in the distance.
Owls are very doing this right now—listen for the low, soft hooting of a great horned owl or the ‘who-cooks-for-you’ call from a barred owl in the early evening as they pair off and establish their territories. Some birdsongs are very distinctive, like the titmouse that sings ‘peter-peter-peter,’ or the Carolina wren’s ‘wichity-witchitywitchety.’ White-throated sparrows sing ‘Oh-sweet-Canada-Canada,’ and robins sing ‘cheerio-cheerio. What do they look like? Observe their overall color. Are there markings on the wings and heads? Do they have eye-stripes, cheek patches or throat patches? The size, shape, and color of their beaks are all helpful identifying marks. You should also notice that the males are generally more brightly and distinctively marked while the females are more subdued. Cardinals, goldfinches and house finches are classic examples of this. Male cardinals are scarlet red while the females are more of an olive drab color. The same applies to the bright yellow male goldfinches whose mates are also an olive drab. Male house finches have a lovely reddish-purple wash on their heads while their mates are unremarkably blah and brown. Trying to ID a female bird can often be challenging, but keep an eye for the male, who will probably not be far away, and it’s likely you will be able to identify the pair. As your kids’ birding skills progress, they are becoming citizen-scientists. These amateur birders can help scientists keep track of trends in bird counts and movements. Cornell Lab of Ornithology (allaboutbirds.org) holds bird counts several times a year that allows backyard birders to report their findings. Birding has also reached the cyber world with the Merlin App (available for free at merlin.allaboutbirds.org). Simply answer a few questions about a bird you’re attempting to identify, and the app will tell you what bird you see. It is eerily accurate. Regardless of how many birds you see, hear or identify, the most important thing is that you can your kids can have fun and enjoy being outside together.

A
ll birds are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. This was passed at a time when birds were being indiscriminately slaughtered by the millions to elaborately decorate women’s hats. Not only is it illegal to kill them, but it also means nests are protected when they are “active” (meaning eggs or chicks are present), nor may you collect their eggs. They do not live in their nests. Nests have one purpose and one purpose only—the nest is the equivalent of a crib; it is not a home. The only time you will see a bird on the nest is if there are eggs or chicks waiting to fledge. Once the chicks fly, they may stay in the vicinity of the nest but they do not return to it. If you find a baby bird and touch it, its parents will NOT reject it. With the exception of vultures, most birds have a very poor sense of smell. It is not unusual for a young chick to wander too close to the edge of the nest and gets caught by a gust of wind. If you find a baby bird on the ground and can safely restore it to its nest, do so. If you can’t see the nest or it is too high to reach, try to get the bird to shelter where it is out of the way of predators. The parents will keep an eye on it, keeping it fed until it is strong enough to make its first flight. Do not feed bread to birds of any kind. Birds do not digest bread well, and if you feed it to ducks, the bread fouls the water and can deform their wing feathers. M ARCH 2019
