Anne Arundel County Declares Suicide a Public Health Crisis

O

n January 21, 2020 the Anne Arundel County Council unanimously voted to declare suicide a public health crisis.

First introduced by Council member Nathan Volke, the resolution calls for suicide to be declared a public health crisis and requested that the department of health take appropriate action.

In a December op-ed piece for the Capital Gazette Volke disclosed that he had lost a close family member to suicide by firearm. He stated that suicide has been on the rise, and that suicide is in the top 10 causes of death in Anne Arundel County.

Among those present to speak where county residents including Celeste Anderson, who lost her 14-year-old son Noah to suicide on September 28, 2019. Her words gripped all who listened. “I am here to remind you that suicide does not discriminate.” She said. “The system is flawed and broken.”

Some of those speaking in support of the resolution cited access to guns and gun violence as part of the issue, while others were argued that suicide is a mental health issue and not a gun issue.

Representatives from Moms for Mental Health, a local group offering support for those affected by mental health issues, as well as members of the National Alliance on Mental Illness Anne Arundel County (NAMIAAC) were also present. Mental health issues, including long wait times for appointments and high cost of

care were brought up by several speakers. Dr. Robert Herman, an Annapolis-based psychiatrist, stated that “treatment is effective and suicide is preventable, but access to effective treatment remains a problem to many who suffer from psychiatric illness.”

While it was voted unanimously by council members to declare suicide a public health crisis, not all in attendance agreed with the resolution’s passing.

Anne Arundel County Health Officer Dr. Nilesh Kalyanaraman stated that suicide, while defined as a mental health issue, did not warrant a ‘crisis’ declaration.

Councilwoman Amanda Fiedler spoke at length about her support for this resolution and even took the opportunity to tearfully finish reading Mrs. Anderson’s remarks. The show of emotion and display of support from council members and the public humanized the legislative process.

So, what does it mean now that the resolution has passed?

According to Councilwoman Fiedler, “The resolution passing, and the specific language means that it is the council’s position that suicide is a public health crisis and our will is that the health department will move forward with the initiatives in the language of the resolution like reducing stigma and ensuring resources.”

Maryland Hall ArtFest, a 40th Anniversary Celebration

or four decades, Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts (MHCA) has sought to serve as the region’s cultural hub, convening and engaging all people in arts experiences, strengthening individuals and communities through art.

“Kids from all backgrounds benefit from the arts,” says Laura Brino, MHCA outreach coordinator. “Our programming provides mentorship, arts experiences, and exhibition opportunities to youth in a safe space where they can be themselves.”

Maryland Hall has been honoring its 40 years of supporting “Arts for All” by stretching the celebration over the course of its entire 40th anniversary season, which began last fall. But the biggest single celebration is taking place on March 22, at ArtFest, Maryland Hall’s annual open house. ArtFest will be held in conjunction with a 40th Birthday Party, which staff have affectionately dubbed both “pArtyFest” and “the Final 40th Hurrah.”

As it does each spring, the event will coincide with Maryland Day and showcase all of the diverse programs that exist under one roof. “If you’ve never been to Maryland Hall before, ArtFest is the perfect way to discover all that we offer in one single day,” says Katie Redmiles, digital marketing and communications specialist at MD Hall.

TIME IN THE LIMELIGHT HIGH SCHOOL THEATER PROGRAMS IMPART VALUABLE LESSONS

D

uring most hours of the day, drama students live the lives of ordinary teenagers. But for a few hours after school when they’re in rehearsal, they might suddenly become pirates, gangsters, historical figures, mothers, fathers, witches, or any other colorful character living a life much different from their own.

Don’t let the escapism fool you—for these teens, what they learn in rehearsal is very relevant and applicable to the real world. “It builds confidence, character, friendships and helps those students who may be lost find their place,” says Lauren Schene, director of theater at Archbishop Spalding High School. “It’s more than an extracurricular activity,”

she says, “It’s a place to call home.”

Most theater programs at public and independent high schools put on at least one full-scale production a year, sometimes as many as three or four. The educators who head up these programs concur that these productions take a lot of work, but they offer valuable lessons for the teenagers. “I think that students learn a great deal from doing theatre, essential skills like time management and quick thinking,” says Ron Giddings, drama director at Severn School. “They learn to be empathetic and how to literally put themselves into someone else’s shoes. These are all life skills that will serve them in whatever pursuit they choose.”

At any given school, a theatrical production will provide opportunities

for dozens of students both onstage and behind the scenes, bringing together actors, singers, dancers, musicians, designers, technicians and other talented artists. “Between tech, actors and pit performers, our current production has over 100 students involved,” says Kevin Reagan, drama director at Kent Island High School, which is currently working on a production of The Wizard of Oz. “For the musical, we audition in November, begin rehearsing in December, and our productions go up the first and second weekends in March.”

With rehearsal schedules that sometimes go for six, eight or even 10 weeks, many theater programs are faced with the challenge of working around the dizzying schedules of so

new & notable many busy students. That means it’s important to make efficient use of time in rehearsal, and encouraging students to work on their homework during their downtime.

“With a cast of 33, not everyone is going to be in every scene, so what do I do with them when we are not working their scene?” says Kristen Bishoff, director of Chesapeake High School’s theater company, which is currently working on High School Musical. “My rehearsals are mapped out where everyone is doing something. Some are with music, choreography, scene work, costumes, hair and makeup. Students struggle with using any downtime to complete homework. They spend up to 12 to 15 hours a week at rehearsal, so they need to balance rehearsal with school.”

During a typical rehearsal, students might spend several hours working on scenes, songs or dance numbers, but they are also required to put in extra effort at home to reinforce everything they learned that day and be prepared the next time they run it in rehearsal.

After working on different parts of the production in pieces, they will start doing run-throughs of the show several weeks before opening. Then they spend the week leading up to the performances in tech rehearsals, adding elements like sets, costumes, lights and sound effects.

At some schools, such as Chesapeake, these production elements are put together by hard working parent volunteers. “Some of my volunteers do not have any children in the production but continue to help out because they love working with the students,” says Bishoff.

At other schools, such as Severn, everything is handled by students.

“We have students who build the set, design and implement makeup, design, program and run lights and sound,” Giddings says. “They can do whatever they are willing. It’s great to

have them involved in that way and take ownership, because that’s more learning to be done.”

Those involved with theater, both educators and students, agree that putting together a production is a combination of working hard, learning new things and having fun along the way. Angelica Brooks, drama club director at Bowie High School, says, “Students learn to work as a team, develop leadership skills, exhibit hard work and motivation, and in the end they are very proud of their work and grateful for the experience and the friends they have made in the process.”

Maybe it’s because they love it so much, or maybe they’re used to keeping busy, but the theater students don’t seem fazed by how much work theater requires. “It’s really all about scheduling efficiently,” explains Emily Allgair, a Severna Park High School

student who participates in the theater program and is currently in the cast of Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival, the annual music revue that draws crowds from all over the area. “We are given our rehearsal schedules ahead of time, so it honestly just comes down to checking what I put in my calendar. Most of our rehearsals are around 3 o’clock if not later, so we are still able to stay after school for academic and extracurricular activities.”

Angela Germanos, the Severna Park High theater company’s director, acknowledges that Rock ‘n’ Roll has widespread appeal, but she sees students put just as much work into the winter one-act play night and the fall musical. “I’m proud when [students] take initiative to help make the show better and help others succeed,” she says.

culminates in only a weekend of shows, sometimes two. Students and teachers encourage the community to come check out an upcoming performance so they can see all the talent involved firsthand—who knows, they might even see the next new rising star?

But whether they plan to pursue theater professionally or not, the young performances perceive theater as something they are proud to be part of and something they’re pleased to share with others. “Overall, theater has taught me incredible discipline that I value in all aspects of my life,” says Zarah Meek from Severn School. “With the whole cast and everyone else involved relying on each person, there is no slacking off at the end of the day. Sports may build teamwork for some, but for me, theater is what has inspired the most ‘united action’ and desire to do my job so I can be there for others.”

5 Ways to Save on Summer Camps

Is your child ready for overnight camp?

T

hat’s a question many parents are wondering around this time of year. Here are some tips from the American Camp Association and some input from our Facebook followers on what age is best to start sending kids to sleep-away camp.

• What is your child’s age? Children under age 7 may not adjust easily to being away from home. Consider the day camp experience to prepare them for future overnight camp.

• How did your child become interested in camp? Does your child talk about camp and camp activities on a sustained basis? How much persuasion is necessary from you?

• Has your child had positive overnight experiences away from home? Visiting relatives or friends?

Were these separations easy or difficult?

• What does your child expect to do at camp? Learning about the camp experience ahead of time allows you to create positive expectations.

• Are you able to share consistent and positive messages about camp? Your confidence in a positive experience will be contagious.

County recreation departments can be a one-stop shop for affordable summer camp. Counties often offer everything from specialty camps to full-day, all-purpose camps perfect for working parents.

Call your church or place of worship A day camp at a local church can be a nurturing environment for kids—and most of them are lowcost or even free.

Apply for scholarships and financial assistance

Most national organizations, like the Boy Scouts of America or the Foundation for Jewish Camp, offer partial or full scholarships for qualifying campers.

New toiletries and incidentals are one thing, but new clothes, towels and linens are another. In fact, when it comes to these items, camp staff members agree—the older, the better.

appy birthday to the Old Line State! March 25 officially marks Maryland’s birthday, the day settlers disembarked from the sailing ships the Ark and the Dove in 1634. No one knew what lacrosse or steamed crabs were yet. But one thing is for sure, those early colonists knew they had found a special place to call home.

Maryland Day 2020 will be commemorated in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County with a weekendlong celebration from March 20 to 22. Over the weekend there will be more than forty cultural, historical and environmental locations hosting events in the Four Rivers Heritage Area (Annapolis, Eastport, Edgewater, Deale and Galesville). All events are free or just $1, making this the perfect opportunity to explore our capital and surrounding area. The city is sponsoring free shuttle transportation on March 21 on two routes through town, between City Dock, Calvert St., West St., and the historic sites. Most of the sites bring on extra staff for tours, demonstrations and other special events that are unique to Maryland Day weekend. “This is an opportunity to experience a wide range of historical and cultural sites that fit in every family’s budget,” says Erik Evans, marketing director for Maryland Day. “The participating sites want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to come out and experience the heritage and culture of their community.”

In addition to the Annapolis area events, you can also head to St. Mary’s County, where the settlers first arrived at St. Clements Island. Each year the island’s historical center hosts a ceremony with a tour of the island and museum. At nearby Historic St. Mary’s City, you can have free access to all museum sites, as well as attend a Maryland Day ceremony.

Historic St. Mary’s City celebrates Maryland’s anniversary with ceremony, pageantry, speeches, and free admission to living history and museum exhibits. The official program at 1 p.m. at the reconstructed State House of 1676 includes the presentation of HSMC’s highest honor, the Cross Bottony Award, a flag ceremony featuring students from across Maryland representing their home counties, and music from local groups. The outdoor living history sites will be open from 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

St. Clements Island is the birthplace of Maryland, where the Ark and the Dove first came ashore. You can celebrate with free admission to the island’s museum from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with tours of the museum and the island, as well as fun activities a Maryland Day ceremony from 2 to 3 p.m., and free water taxi rides to the island.

hether it’s the simple reflection of a boat hull on the water, the worn face of a lifelong waterman

on a Chesapeake island, or a family of nesting brown pelicans captured down to the detail of their eye color, Jay Fleming’s photos illustrate life on the Chesapeake Bay like no other photographer past or present. Like the watermen that often surround him and are depicted in his book Working the Water, Jay works the water by spending countless hours on it himself. He rises with the sun and often spends full days in its rays until it sets.
