The Art of Upcycling Turning Trash into Treasure

I

t takes a special something to look at a pile of trash and see treasures — but if you can do it, you just might be an upcycler. Upcycling is similar to recycling in that items are reused to keep them out of trash cans and landfills. But, instead of creating a completely new product — like, paper or bottles — upcyclers use their hands and their minds to create fun, interesting and beautiful items from found pieces. Artist and Baltimore resident Kirsten Lapointe says she uses found objects in her home and her work. She has upcycled desks, vanities and tables — all from things she or her husband found on the street. "I'm a born trash picker. Every time I see something that's shiny or interesting," Lapointe says. "It must be part of my creativity." Lapointe and her husband teamed up to create a mosaic table from a

table base she found on the street. Even the floor of her house has been repurposed. They took up carpet and found that the floor beneath didn't look so nice, so they painted it. Lapointe frequents stores like Goodwill looking for interesting objects for her artwork. "Kitchy stuff, earrings, old books," she says. The found piece can be an inspiration in itself or it can help flesh out an idea she has already been working on. Upcycled pieces are what Shannon Haddaway sells at her Annapolis store, Twisted Sister. The store specializes in home décor treasures that Haddaway and other artists create — mostly from found pieces. It all started when she was a stay-at-home mom, looking to use ideas that she found online, on websites like Pinterest. "I love using my hands to make something. There's something in me that makes

Refuge is a great nature adventure on your way to the shore. Blackwater was established in 1933 as a waterfowl sanctuary for birds migrating along the Atlantic Flyway, and lies just a few miles outside of Cambridge. Blackwater has been called the “Everglades of the North,”

and one of the “Last Great Places” by the Nature Conservancy. It is well off the beaten path, but also well worth the drive. The refuge comprises more than 28,000 acres of marshland, streams and forests, and offers numerous opportunities for recreation and natural beauty.

WHAT TO DO A slow drive around the loop

This trek usually affords close-up encounters with eagles, turtles, waterfowl, songbirds, fish and herons.

A visit to the Visitor Center

Downstairs features several exhibits, but go upstairs for a look through four powerful telescopes. You might just spot a falcon, eagle, deer or fox.

hotspots around the Wildlife Drive.

The Eagle Festival

In 2022 the festival is scheduled for March 5 & 6 and March 12 & 13. At the festival you’ll find great birding talks (that are quite captivating, even for kids), bird-watching hikes, refuge tours, and hands-on activities for kids like making your own birdhouse or identifying owl poop!

Hiking and Biking

There are several well marked paddling trails throughout the refuge, and two major biking routes (20- and 25-miles long) beyond the loop road.

A picnic in the gardens

Beautifully landscaped to make the most of indigenous plants and flowers, the garden is perfect for sitting in the sun.

Blackwater has beautiful light, especially at sunrise and sunset, gorgeous vistas found nowhere else, and plenty of indigenous creatures. While you can stop along the popular loop drive, don’t be afraid to practice your skills while heading further into the refuge.

Birding

GETTING THERE

Blackwater offers regular birding outings for adults. Harry Armistead, a seasoned birder who has volunteered at the refuge for 30 years, will drive participants well beyond the Visitor Center to look for song birds, neotrops, birds of prey and other marsh and river creatures. 2022 outings are scheduled for March 27, April 24, October 30, November 20 and December 4. Guiding birding tours Bring your binoculars and dress appropriately for the weather. The birding party will caravan via car to birding

Blackwater is about an hour from Annapolis via Route 50 East. If you are using GPS, you must enter the physical address of the refuge. Follow four simple rules when storing wine at home

M

ore people are drinking wine than ever before. In fact, the United States has surpassed France as the world's leading consumer of wine, with the average American drinking more than three gallons of wine annually. Even without the budget and capacity for a specially designed cellar, it's easy to dedicate a space in your home for attractive and functional wine storage. At Bin 201 in Annapolis, Chris Paige, Assistant Manager of Bin 201, says that location is everything when selecting a space to store wine. "Ideally you want a cool, dark place with a stable environment," he says. Frills and fancy accessories are not necessary, but a wine rack is recommended to store wine on its side, so that the cork remains moistened and never dries out. "Temperature, light, humidity and stability all play a key role for optimum wine storage," Paige notes. Consider these factors when storing your wine at home:

Temperature: Wine enthusiasts

often choose to store their wine in a basement setting, due to the cooler temperatures. Heat and temperature fluctuation can interfere with the chemistry of the wine and 55 Degrees is considered the optimum temperature for perfect wine storage.

Light: Choose a dark place for your

wine space. Like heat, sunlight can break down the wine and create unsavory chemicals.

Humidity: Higher humidity levels keep the cork from drying out and discourage evaporation.

Position: Store wine bottles on their side, so that the cork is continually moistened. Choose a location where there is little movement or vibration, which can affect the wine over time. i

Baked Salmon in Mango Chutney INGREDIENTS

• Salmon- Fresh, doesn't matter the size. Deboned, fillet. • Onion- sliced thinly • Lime/lemon juice • Ginger powder • One jar of Patak's Sweet Mango Chutney- you can find it in most grocery stores in the exotic foods section. • Salt pepper to taste • Jasmine rice- one cup. • A plum

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place salmon in glass or ceramic baking dish with meat facing up. Drizzle lemon or lime juice over top, just enough to cover but not drenching the salmon. Sprinkle ginger powder over fish, against covering but not drenching fish. Take onion slices and lay over tope of fish in single layer, covering the entire fish. Pour entire jar of Patak’s Sweet Mango Chutney over fish. Put fish in oven for 45 minutes or until fish is flakey. 2. While fish is baking, take the plum and peel the skin off. Slice it in half and scoop out seed. Then take remaining pulp, put in bowl and mash it up until it is the consistency of apple sauce. 3. Boil two cups water in a pot. Once boiling, add one cup of Jasmine rice. Reduce heat to medium. Watch rice and when rice has absorbed 75% of water, add mashed plumb and stir. Take off heat. 4. One salmon has finished baking, take out and let cool for 2 minutes. Scoop rice onto plates. Divide salmon and place on top of rice. i M A RCH 2 022 | c h e s a p e a k e f a m i l y . c o m
