American History in Annapolis

T

wo important parts of American History are on display now in Annapolis for a limited time, and they are within walking distance of one another.

T

A look at how sports encourage confidence and teamwork

here is one thing that women CEOs of Fortune 500 companies have in common. They played sports. 54% of them at the university level. Not all kids want to play sports and that’s okay, but a survey done by the consulting firm Ernst & Young found that women CEOs say they learned the following essential skills by participating in sports. • • •

Founding Freedoms: The Essential American Documents Sept.10 - Nov.14, 9am - 5pm This exhibition offers the opportunity to view rare historic copies of the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights alongside an original, handwritten 1783 speech by George Washington. A photo ID is required and masks are mandatory inside. Maryland State House.

Teamwork Defeat and setbacks are part of the game Confidence

Those same skills have proven essential in positions of leadership at top companies. And as jobs become more dependent on teamwork it is especially important that kids learn how to work together to problem solve. Do your kids need to earn an athletic scholarship or be on a time-consuming travel team? No. Should kids be pushed to play a sport that they don’t enjoy? No. But it’s important that kids who want to play have the opportunity to play. Aside from learning important off-field skills, youth athletes are more likely to go to college and not drink, smoke or use drugs. If you are worried about college scholarships, as pointed

out in our article this month on Equity in Youth Sports, “If you are good enough, we will find you,” said Paul Thornton, Assistant Track and Field Coach at the Division I University of Kansas. More and more schools and athletic associations are realizing the benefits to kids of fielding a team where everyone gets the chance to play regardless of their athletic skills and their ability to pay for equipment and expensive coaching. As Bruce Hunter, one of the Highsteppers’ head coaches says, “We measure in elevation of self-esteem, in elevation of confidence — and that goes a long way.” I was fortunate enough to play sports throughout college, as did my kids. The team forms an immediate community with a common goal as soon as athletes become part of it. Team dinners coming home from away games was always something I looked forward to. And now I'm looking forward to sharing this article with you as we shine the light on youth athletes and equity in all sports.

Freedom Bound Sept.18,- March 1, 10am - 4pm. Closed on Sunday and Monday. After researching 1000 Runaway Slave ads historians created stories for nine of the people described in the ads. To share these stories, the Freedom Bound Exhibit was created. This powerful exhibit tells the stories of resistance to bondage and servitude in the Chesapeake Region from the Colonial Period to the American Civil War (1728-1864).

Choosing the Right Skincare Products

Test skincare products before use

W

ith so many skin care products available, including cleansers, moisturizers and cosmetics, it can be difficult to know which products to choose. While understanding your skin type can help you choose products formulated for your skin, it’s still possible that you’ll end up with a product that irritates your skin. Sometimes, a skin care ingredient, such as one of the preservatives, can trigger a condition called allergic contact dermatitis, which can cause your skin to become red, itchy and swollen. Fortunately, board-certified dermatologists from the American

8

chesapeakefamily.com OCTOBER 2021

Academy of Dermatology say testing skin care products on several small areas of your skin first can help predict whether you’ll experience a negative skin reaction. “There are more than 15,000 allergens that can cause allergic contact dermatitis, and skin care products are a common cause,” says board-certified dermatologist Bruce A. Brod, MD, FAAD. “Even products labeled ‘hypoallergenic’, ‘natural’ or ‘clean’ can cause a skin reaction, so it’s helpful to test skin care products before using them as you would normally.” To test a skin care product, Dr. Brod recommends the following tips: Apply the product to a test spot twice daily for seven to 10 days. Choose a

quarter-sized spot on your skin where the product won’t be rubbed or washed away, such as the underside of your arm or the bend of your elbow. Use the normal amount and thickness you would use as if you were applying the product regularly. Leave the product on your skin for as long as you would normally. If you’re testing something that you would usually wash off, like a cleanser, keep it on your skin for five minutes or as long as the instructions say. If after seven to 10 days you don’t have a skin reaction, such as red, itchy, or swollen skin, go ahead and use the product. Keep in mind that some ingredients, such as retinol and glycolic acid, can irritate your skin, particularly if your skin is sensitive. This is normal and temporary. If you develop a skin reaction, gently wash the product off as soon as possible, and don’t use it again. Apply a cool compress or petroleum jelly to relieve your skin, if needed. If your reaction to a product is severe and not relieved with cool compresses or petroleum jelly, you may need to see a dermatologist to help manage your symptoms. “Sometimes, discovering the cause of skin irritation is easier said than done,” says Dr. Brod. “If it is difficult to pinpoint the exact ingredient causing your skin to react, talk to a board-certified dermatologist, who can help. You may need a medical test called patch testing to help find out what is causing your irritation.” Once the cause has been identified, says Dr. Brod, it’s important to avoid it. For example, if fragrance in skin care products is causing your skin to react, he says, opt for products that are labeled “fragrance free.” Remain cautious with certain skin care products that are labeled “unscented” or have plantbased botanical ingredients, as these products may still have fragrance-related ingredients. These tips are demonstrated in “How to Test Skin Care Products,” a video posted to the AAD website and YouTube channel. This video is part of the AAD’s “Video of the Month” series, which offers tips people can use to properly care for their skin, hair and nails.

Local Young Chef Making A Big Impact One-for-One Business Model Empowers Michael Platt to Pay It Forward

C

all it a pretty sweet accomplishment — 15-year-old Michael Platt of Bowie, founder of Michael’s Desserts, has received the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes in recognition of his business and philanthropy endeavors. Good citizenship is something the teen learned from his family as he was growing up. “I feel like everyone in my family is very involved in the community,” he says. “My grandmother was on the school board, my mom gave out soup to people experiencing homelessness, my grandfather was in Boy Scouts. If there’s a problem that needs to be solved, you need to do what you can to solve it.” Platt got the idea for Michael’s Desserts when he was 11 years old and received a pair of TOMS shoes. The brand’s “One for One” model — in which, for every pair of TOMS sold, the company donates a pair to a child in a third-world country —impressed him. “I decided to use that model for my business,” he says. “If somebody buys a dessert, I give one away to someone in need.” He accomplishes this by donating either the product itself or money to No Kid Hungry. Running a business has come with many lessons along the way. Platt already knew his way around the

kitchen, having learned many basic baking techniques from his mom while he was growing up, but he grew as a baker by turning to cookbooks and YouTube. He also had to master practical business matters like pricing and time management. Platt furthered his influence in his community by establishing a nonprofit organization, PLLATE, on behalf of Michael’s Desserts in 2018. Representing Power, Love, Learning, and Access for Everyone, PLLATE addresses the problem of food insecurity by distributing nonperishable healthy snacks to kids and establishing a pay-what-you-can grocery store. From a parent’s perspective, mom Danita Platt says she loves seeing her son realize his ability to have a positive impact about the issues that matter most to him. “There are kids his age, they have so much energy and so many ideas and they’re very passionate about challenges they see in the world, but they also haven’t had as much life experience that can sometimes, unfortunately, leave people jaded,” she says. “We’re incredibly proud of him for still believing that if you see a problem and you can do anything, you should try to solve it.” Find more information about Michael’s Desserts and PLLATE online at michaelsdesserts.com. — By Dylan Roche

M

any parents will do whatever it takes to make their homes safer for their children. A safer home may lead to fewer accidents. However, no one knows every safety hazard in their home. Each October we recognize National Window Covering Safety Month to raise the profile of the hazards of corded window covering and make sure as many parents as possible know that ‎“What’s Best for Kids? Go Cordless.”‎ As one of the top 5 hidden hazards in American homes, corded window coverings pose a potential strangulation hazard to infants and young children. For many new parents, and experienced ones too, this safety risk is often overlooked even though it’s in plain sight every day. The Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) urges parents and caregivers to check their window coverings for potential hazards and to replace any corded window coverings with safer, cordless products. Below are several guidelines that WCSC and safety experts recommend parents and caregivers follow: • Install only cordless window coverings or those with inaccessible cords in homes with young children. Replace window blinds with products that are cordless or have inaccessible cords. • These products have packages that are marked with the Best for Kids™ certification label. The label enables you to easily identify products best suited for homes with young children. • In instances where window cords are present, ensure that all window cords are out of sight and reach by shortening or moving them up and away so that they are inaccessible. Move all cribs, beds, furniture, and toys away from windows and cords, preferably to another wall.

Fossil Hunting at Purse and Mallows Bay Park Spotlight

B

eginner fossil hunters will find success at Purse, a section of the Nanjemoy Wildlife Management Area (WMA) on the Potomac in Charles County about 20 miles southwest of LaPlata. An undeveloped area of forest, Purse is used for bird watching, hunting, fishing and fossil collecting. Purse is in an isolated location. There are no close facilities or places to stop for food so plan accordingly. As you get close the road narrows and is surrounded by trees on both sides. Keep an eye out for a small gravel parking lot on the left side of the road. There is a sign but you could miss it and have to turn around. Once you have parked, look for the trailhead on the opposite side of the road. It’s less than half a mile to the beach and the walk is easy. When the path splits you can go in either direction to reach the beach, but the left-hand walking trail will lead to a larger sandy area. The beach isn’t wide so it’s best to plan most of your trip around low tide. You will find gentle waves and shallow water suitable for wading and swimming. The sand is littered with small shells, stones and shark’s teeth. You can bring some sort of strainer, but it also works to let a handful of sand shift through your fingers and pull out the shark’s

teeth. Most of the teeth you will find are under an inch long, but the quantity and ease of finding them make up for the size, especially for beginners. Most your finds will be Paleocene Fossil Shark Teeth. Make sure you bring a bag for your finds, bug spray and drinking water.

Mallows Bay

1440 Wilson Landing Rd, Nanjemoy, MD. visitmaryland.org/ listing/attraction/mallows-bay-park Your crew may be content spending the entire day looking for shark’s teeth, or they may feel like exploring Mallows Bay, a National Marine Sanctuary and the home to over 100 WWI era wooden steamships, known as the “Ghost Fleet.” Mallows Bay is only a few miles from your fossil collecting location and you have to pass by it on your way home. The best way to see the ships is by kayak. REI does weekend tours. But if you don’t have time for kayaking there is a trail overlooking the bay where it is possible to see several of the partially submerged ships. A big map by the boat launch identifies each boat. Bird watching is another great pastime at Mallows Bay since both Eagles and Osprey have made their homes among the wreckage of the ships.

Spooky Maryland Hikes Rumors and Legends Add Big Scare Factor to Hikes By Donna Jefferson

F

all is a great time to get outside and have some fun on spooky Maryland hikes. Urban legends that range from young girls with red eyes haunting a staircase, to disease-ravaged soldiers wandering a Civil War site, Maryland has plenty of history from which to draw stories. Forests, swamps and deserted towns provide imaginative places for spirits to live in.

H A U N T E D

Pocomoke Forest

There are enough legends and folklore about the Pocomoke Forest to fill an entire book. Hangings, UFOs and a man with a hook instead of a hand are just a few of the rumors. Hiking paths around Furnace Town, the site of the old Nassawango Iron Furnace, seem to be where most of these stories take place, so park your car and begin your hike from the Furnace Town parking lot and take the red, yellow or orange trails from there. The forest consists of over 18,000 acres of pine and hardwood forest and bald-cypress swamp. Take note that the trails are closed at night although several times a month there are guided tours through the woods. Paw Paw Tunnel

Located at mile 155.2 on the C & O Canal, on the edge of the Green Ridge State Forest, in Oldtown, MD. It took 14 years and 6 million bricks to build the Paw Paw tunnel along the C & O Canal. Although construction of the tunnel was an engineering marvel it almost bankrupted the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company. There was fighting among the workers of different ethnicities and many after-hours bar room brawls. The burning down of a lockhouse resulted in the death of the lockkeeper who is now rumored to walk the tunnel. Sometimes boatmen would light fires in the tunnel to “smoke” out competing boats that would refuse to give right of way. Bring your flashlight to use as you walk through the tunnel, not only is it very dark, but if you look closely you

can see the weep holes, brass plates and rope burns. There is a two mile trail over the ridge that the tunnel is built underneath, giving spectacular views of the area. Closed at night. nps.gov/experiences/paw-paw-tunnel-and-trail.htm

Alberton Road Trail - Daniels

Daniels is the ruin of what was once a mill town complete with a school and two churches. It is located in the Patapsco Valley State Park. The trail follows the old road that led to the town of Daniels which has been completely abandoned since the 1960s. A fire road, a little more than a mile along the trail, leads away from the river and uphill to the St. Stanislaus Kostka Roman Catholic Church. It’s a stone gothic church, with graveyard in the back, that burned and was abandoned in 1926. This is an out and back trail. If you just go to the church and back it is about 3.5 miles. Round trip to the end of the trail and back is just over 5 miles. The trail is on the old road, so is mostly flat and easy to walk. The trailhead is off of Dogwood Road near the intersection with Hollifield Road. goo.gl/maps/fgwiqLNmnpaxPmrq9

Point Lookout State Park

Located on a peninsula with the Potomac River on one side and the Chesapeake Bay on the other, Point Lookout offers a 3.6 mile walking loop on the edge of the water. The views are beautiful, the creepy stories and history of the peninsula will have you looking over your shoulder as you walk the trail. A Civil War Union hospital and prisoner of war camp was located on Point Lookout. The hospital was built to house 10,000 soldiers and at times had over 50,000. Nearly 4,000 soldiers died there during the Civil War. Some say the spirits of soldiers still walk the peninsula. But spirits from the hospital have nothing on the ones said to inhabit the Lighthouse built in 1830. Unusual sounds, smells and sights have been reported in the Lighthouse, including unexplained visions in photographs. The main trail is mostly flat and in open terrain without much shade. Camping is available. dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/ Pages/southern/pointlookout.aspx

NOTES State parks are open from dawn to dusk. Obey those times. Some destinations have limited parking, make sure you park in designated spaces. The AllTrails app can come in very handy when venturing onto trails that aren’t well marked.

t can start young. You sign your four-year-old up for soccer in the hopes that he can run out some of his extra energy. You notice he’s not only the fastest on the field — he’s the fastest on the field by a lot. He’s still the fastest at five, and at six the gap between him and his teammates seems to be getting even larger. Now you’re thinking maybe you’ve got a prodigy on your hands; the next Roy Kent from “Ted Lasso,” the kid who’s clearly going to get a full ride to college in 12 short years. You know the odds are long; NCAA Division I and Division II schools combined give out a maximum of just over 100,000 athletic scholarships. But how do you make sure your child is one of those 100,000? The answer isn’t what you think.

Travel Teams, Private Coaches, and Camps

It seems that the prevailing wisdom is to sink as much money as possible into your child’s athletic endeavors:

hundreds of dollars and even more hours on interstate tournaments, summer camps, winter workouts, professional video editors to create highlight reels to send to colleges. However, the shortest, easiest thing to remember is that if your child is an athlete gifted enough to get any athletic scholarship at the college level, the colleges already know about him or her by the 8th or 9th grade. “It varies from sport to sport, but I say this a lot: If you are good enough, we will find you,” said Paul Thornton, Assistant Track and Field Coach at the Division I University of Kansas. “Some runners do these travel tournaments in the summer, but can be a big pill for a family to swallow to pay $4,000 on a vacation so their kid can run in a track meet. We usually find athletes at their respective state track and field championships.” “Track and field is a sport where you can look at the athlete’s timed events, you can look at the distances they’re throwing in field events,” said Tamara

Dunlap-Elkins, Assistant Head Coach for the Severn Highsteppers, a track and field team associated with the Severn Athletic Club. “The parents can look exactly at what their child is doing, and sometimes it melts them down, honestly. But it’s easy to compare their child’s times to the times you want to see” if a student has higher ambitions. Coach Dunlap-Elkins should know what success looks like — the Highsteppers sent 24 athletes to the AAU Junior Olympics this past summer, with several athletes landing podium spots. Yes, there are recruitment services that can connect players with college coaches, shoot professional-style highlight reels, and make you feel like you’re giving your kid that little extra edge that might get them on the field. It remains to be seen, though, how helpful such services actually are. If your child

is getting varsity-level playing time early in his high school career, is making AllState or All-Region teams (even “just” at the public school level), and is achieving other athletic successes, they’ll be on college coaches’ radars. A highlight reel is a good idea, but with every parent carrying a camera in their pocket and every high schooler being well-versed in video editing (see? TikTok does come in handy), that can be handled at home for free. And since a student must be in good academic standing to get a college athletics scholarship —and the fact that there are more academic scholarships than athletic ones out there— spending time hitting the books might help more than hitting the weight room. The choice of sports matters tremendously when it comes to cost. A 2019 survey from Project Play,

sponsored by the Aspen Institute, found that on average ice hockey parents reported spending the most in a season, with skiing, field hockey, gymnastics, and lacrosse rounding out the top five. On average, sports families reported paying $693 per child, per sport in a year, with the greatest expense of all being travel. Some sports are cheaper — for example, skateboarding, crosscountry, and basketball — but all of those require safe places to play, practice, and compete, which can be difficult in lower-income communities. And while 46% of kids from homes with incomes greater than $100,000 a year, only 28% of children from homes with incomes under $25,000 a year play sports. So the question remains: Do you have to pay to play?

Most local sports leagues do have fees; uniforms, field upkeep, and referees all cost money. But out of the eight Anne Arundel-area sports leagues, both public and private, that were contacted for this article, none would turn a student athlete away based on their inability to pay. “We’re blessed with a great parent base, and a lot of them say ‘I’m paying for my kid; if you get another kid who can’t pay, I can cover them,’” said Paul Tue, Commissioner of the Kent County Spartans Football and Cheer. “We know we’re going to have kids who are going to play for free every year, and we want to find donors where we can make it completely free for any kid who wants to play — that’s our goal for 2022.” Other organizations use fundraisers, grants, sponsorships, and anything else it takes so that every athlete can take the field. One barrier to access in Anne Arundel County, ironically, lies in public school sports teams. Even before the pandemic created a bus driver shortage, not all local schools offered regular “activity buses,” which can take students home after an athletics practice (or a theater rehearsal or club meeting). If a student can’t yet drive, doesn’t have a car, or doesn’t have parents who can pick them up, that student has no way home. And without a robust public transportation system, access to county-sponsored recreational teams or even facilities can prove difficult for youth athletes who simply can’t find a ride.

What are You Playing For?

If a college scholarship is the only reason—or even a major reason—why your child is playing sports, take a deep breath, a step back, and look at the big picture. The statistics are clear: Playing sports at any level is good at any age, and especially for young people. Youth athletes, especially those who continue past age 15, are more likely to go to college, are more likely to maintain a

healthy weight into early adulthood, and are less likely to smoke, drink, or use drugs. There’s more to it, though. “The social interaction they get from working with other kids is one of the best things about sports,” said Tue. “A kid can grow up in a neighborhood where everyone looks like him, and then he comes to practice and half his team is Black, or half his team is white—now he thinks ‘I have to learn about these kids.’” “Our organization is one of equity,” said Stephen Lloyd, Severn Athletic Club’s track and field commissioner. “We are inclusive. All of these kids are approaching important milestones not only in their physical development, but in their emotional development, and we like to address those issues.

Young athletes can spot the benefits for themselves. “I remember a game where we had no subs, so it was nine girls playing the entire game,” said Elizabeth Quintero, a 13-year-old soccer player who plays in the South County Youth Association. “It was like 90 degrees outside, we were getting so hot, I had an asthma attack, and everything was crazy. But afterwards, we got named ‘Team No-Quit.’ We put it on headbands and made shirts and everything, and it made me feel really good.” “Wins are nice, but success can be measured in many ways,” said Bruce Hunter, one of the Highsteppers’ head coaches. “We measure in elevation of self-esteem, in elevation of confidence — and that goes a long way.”

Offering Support and Removing the Stigma How Mental Health Resources in K-12 Schools Are Making a Difference By Laura Adams Boycourt

N

ow, perhaps more than ever, access to mental health care is critical for children, and this includes providing them with support within the educational environment. We spoke with schools in the area to learn what they’re doing to make sure students are receiving the helping hand they need. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), “one in six U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year, and half of all mental health conditions begin by age 14.” NAMI reports that attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depression, and behavioral problems are among the most diagnosed issues in children, and many kids aren’t getting the assistance they require. Fortunately, resources at schools have the potential to offer much-needed support. “Undiagnosed, untreated or inadequately treated mental illnesses can significantly interfere with a student’s ability to learn, grow and develop,” the Alliance explains. “Since children spend much of their productive at school, they offer a unique opportunity for early identification, prevention, and interventions.

Resources at the Ready

Shira R. Levy, a Nationally Certified School Psychologist in the Office of Psychological Services at Severna Park High School, says that before a new school year begins, all teachers and staff receive various types of mental health training including how to identify students who may need counseling. The school has six counselors and a psychologist available to all students, who can either self-refer or be referred by parents or teachers, says Levy. SPHS is also proud to offer its S.T.A.R. (short for “Students Taking Action Responsibly”) mental health prevention initiative that helps students recognize the importance of taking care of their minds. Last year, all students at SPHS were given a “Counseling Connection” time, as part of the AACPS schedule, where they could check in with their counselors. Patricia Prosser, Principal of North Dorchester Middle School, says they have two counselors who are available to meet with individual students as well as groups. In addition, a school social worker is on staff. All three have the ability to refer students to outside therapists and child psychologists.

Greta MacGill, Lower and Middle School Counselor at Glenelg Country School, says support is available for students of all ages. “The counselors advocate for students and families within the school and are available to students for individual counseling, group counseling, and life skills development support.” Like SPHS and most schools, students may self-refer or be referred by family or members of the school teaching staff. Counselors can also help families identify other resources outside of school when more intensive support is called for. Dr. Micah L. Beaston, Mental Health Coordinator for Calvert County Public Schools, says the system employs school counselors, school social workers, and school psychologists. Beaston says families typically first connect with school counselors or staff. “The school counselor may address the concern or make a referral to the student service team who meets twice a month to address student needs through a collaborative approach,” she explains. In addition, “community partners including Calvert County Behavioral

Health and Calvert Hospice provide specialized therapeutic services to students who require more intensive therapeutic support,” Beaston says.

A Closer Look at Counseling

Levy says the counseling center at SPHS offers students a variety of calming and mindfulness materials, such as fidgets and sand boxes, should they want to take a break during the school day. The school’s S.T.A.R program “creates school-wide mental health prevention lessons encouraging students to be kind to their mind and to break mental health stigma,” Levy explains. “Different coping strategies are practiced and fun activities and games help students connect, relax and build relationships.” S.T.A.R. also includes speakers who discuss mindfulness, suicide prevention, and breaking mental health stigma. At North Dorchester Middle School, Prosser says counselors meet with students in several ways. “At NDMS, the counselors use group sessions, lunch bunches, mediation sessions and push into the classrooms for lessons.” Giving students choices and keeping them engaged in different ways can make a big difference, says Prosser. “Another way I am trying to address mental health is to provide as many options and choices in school as possible. It is sort of coming at the issue of mental health sideways - but it engages the children and families and having that engagement is a huge step towards mental health.” At Glenelg, MacGill says the school’s counseling program is meant to support students by helping them to develop social skills, resolve conflict, manage stress, and make good decisions. “Throughout the school year, the counselors also provide character education addressing social, emotional, health/wellness, and physical development,” she says. And it’s not just students who can benefit from Glenelg’s mental health resources.

“The school counselors also support ENCOURAGING the community through parent POSITIVE workshops and faculty in-service training.” In Calvert County, public schools offer individual, small group, or whole-school mental health resources. WITH YOUR “We employ a variety of activities KIDS and strategies to meet the diverse needs of our students,” Beaston says. “Each mental health professional possesses individualized areas of expertise and utilizes a variety of COMMUNICATE strategies to address the needs of the TALK TO YOUR students. Many of the mental health CHILD ABOUT HOW professionals have been trained in THEY FEEL OFTEN. therapeutic interventions including ENCOURAGE mindfulness, Solution Focused Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.” TEACH YOUR CHILD COPING MECHANISMS FOR WHEN THEY ARE Counseling in the Midst of COVID At North Dorchester, Prosser says OVERWHELMED the school’s mental health team has been an integral part of taking care of students alongside the pandemic. SLEEP “Mental health has been one of our MAKE SURE YOUR biggest issues for years, and even CHILD GETS more so this past year,” she says. “Our ENOUGH SLEEP two counselors are important to the

school.” Connecting with students has always been at the forefront at Glenelg, says MacGill. This school year, these connections combined with providing students with stability—both physical and mental—will be of the utmost importance. “This year, it’s vital for students to regain normalcy and structure within the school environment,” she explains. “This year has been such a challenging year for families and teenagers,” she says. “Isolation and ambiguous loss and grief over life as we know it has definitely taken a toll on levels of anxiety and depression." For its part, Levy says SPHS will continue to “advocate to break mental health stigma, as our mental health is just as important to take care of as is our physical health. The more the school knows about student mental health outside of school, the better we can help our students with supporting their success from both a wellbeing and an academic perspective.”
