Take Control of Your Health Care

There’s a lot to do in October, and the pages of this month’s Chesapeake Family Life are full of options to choose from. With all of the Pumpkin Patches, Corn Mazes, and Halloween events, it will be hard to choose. We’ll update ChesapeakeFamily.com as we learn about new events and places to discover. We couldn’t fit everything into the magazine, but you can find it all on ChesapeakeFamily.com. We also snuck in some fun and inexpensive activities for learning at home.

On a more serious note, our writer Jillian Amodio talked to health care professionals to learn how to change our mindsets from dreading annual checkups to becoming empowered by them. I’m on the dreading end of the spectrum, especially regarding skin care. I’m fair-skinned, have blue eyes, and love spending time outside. All of my favorite things to do are outside. Tiny Kindness Standout Student celebrates the power of small acts of kindness in her new book

Sixteen-year-old Rachel Spitzer, a junior at Broadneck High School, has unveiled her latest creation, a charming children's book titled "Tiny Kindness." This delightful book is not only filled with humor and clever puns but also carries a profound message about the significance of small acts of kindness.

Get ready to embark on a journey with Tiny, the endearing protagonist, as he guides you through his picturesque town, introducing you to its delightful animal residents. Regardless of your age, Tiny's adventures will have you chuckling heartily as you uncover the profound impact of seemingly minor acts of kindness. Along the way, Tiny will demonstrate the incredible power of friendship and the ripple effect of good deeds.

Spitzer created the character of Tiny in middle school when she started the Tiny Kindness Campaign while working on her Silver Award for Girl Scouts. She illustrated brochures to distribute to community groups and schools to promote kindness towards others in the hopes of positively affecting children's mental health. Rachel says, “During and after the pandemic, the mental health crisis feels even worse, and I have watched many friends

struggle. The very least we can do is show kindness towards each other. I want to spread that positivity.”

Since middle school, she has expanded the world around Tiny. Rachel explains, "While I took on the project of writing, illustrating, and promoting this book as my Gold Award project, I have come to love Tiny so much and plan to write more books to showcase his adventures in kindness. The most exciting part for me (besides thinking up puns for the characters!) is that I am contributing a portion of the proceeds to Mental Health America. We are not alone, and together, we can spread kindness.”

In her free time, Rachel is a rower for Annapolis Junior Rowing, Vice President of Interact Club, a member of various other amazing clubs, and on both the Varsity Golf Team and Senior Dance Company at Broadneck. She enjoys working with the community and has a passion for animal welfare issues and environmental issues. She is unsure what she will study in college but looks forward to finding a way to help her community in the process.

Purchase it at amazon.com/Tiny-Kindness-RachelSpitzer. Tiny Kindness is published by Happy Words Publishing, Paperback $12.99, ISBN 979-8986312033

Discover Pickering Creek Destination Spotlight

Pickering Creek

Audubon Center is a hidden gem on the Eastern Shore, spanning 450 acres of a former working farm. This nature sanctuary provides the perfect escape to reconnect with nature, featuring public trails and a strong focus on educating hikers about the environment. It offers a delightful blend of wild adventure and the comfort of familiarity, making you feel like you're exploring your own backyard.

History: Over 40 years ago, Pickering Creek Audubon Center began as a typical farm, mostly cultivating corn. However, it held a special place in the hearts of a few. In the early 1980s, siblings George Olds and Margaret Strahl inherited the land. Instead of selling it for development, they transformed it into a nature sanctuary for the Talbot County community. They established strict guidelines, preserving it solely for environmental experiences and education, a commitment that continues today.

Trails: The sanctuary boasts over four miles of unpaved trails, thoughtfully equipped with

benches for rest and reflection. Familiar paths often lead to exciting new ones, providing endless exploration opportunities. As you explore, listen to the cicadas' chorus, observe the rustling of wild grasses, and delight in the calls of birds in tall cedars. Pavilions offer ideal spots for rest and observing the creek and meadows. Viewing blinds provide opportunities to observe bluebirds and deer, while informative nature guides educate visitors, emphasizing the sanctuary's commitment to learning.

Conservation: Pickering Creek aims to connect the public with the wonders of nature through exploration. The deeper you venture into the sanctuary, the more diverse the landscape becomes. Educational programs cater to students and families, fostering an appreciation for nature's importance, a core mission of the sanctuary.

Pickering Creek is a one-of-akind destination, with a rich history of passionate preservation that inspires generations to engage more with the natural world.

Turtle and Dolphin Fossils Found New Species Discovered by Amateur Paleontologists at Calvert Cliffs

Calvert Cliffs extend intermittently for about 30 miles along the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, from southernmost Anne Arundel County to the southern tip of Calvert County, Maryland. If you are a lover of turtles and/ or dolphins, specifically fossilized ones found along the famous fossilrich Calvert Cliffs, this free online Smithsonian Institution publication will be of interest to you. What is amazing is that all nine of the new fossil dolphin skulls were found by amateur paleontologists.

The new publication is entitled “Geology and Vertebrate Paleontology of Calvert Cliffs, Maryland, USA - Volume 2, Turtles and Toothed Whales” and is available as a searchable PDF here: https://doi.org/10.5479/ si.23847438

This scholarly work describes 19 kinds of extinct turtles that have been found locally and over 30 kinds of dolphins! One new species of turtle is reported, as well as nine new kinds of dolphins. The new turtle species is based on a small portion of its fossilized shell. The new scientific names given to these dolphins honor those who found the skulls, including additional individuals who have significantly contributed to the science of paleontology.

All nine new dolphin species were based on single skulls, which highlights how incomplete the fossil record is to date. Of the millions of individuals of each of those species that existed on Earth millions of years ago, at present, we only know of the existence of each of those species based on single incomplete skulls that were serendipitously preserved in the fossil record. There is, indeed, much to be learned from future fossil finds.

This publication was an international collaboration between the Royal Institute of Natural Sciences in Belgium (Dr. Olivier Lambert) and the Calvert Marine Museum (Dr. Robert E. Weems, Research Associate in the Department of Paleontology and Dr. Stephen J. Godfrey, Curator of Paleontology).

Unfortunately, there are very few places where the public can see the cliffs. Locations from north to south are: Matoaka Beach Cabins, Flag Ponds Nature Park, and Calvert Cliffs State Park. Please check location’s websites for fees, hours, and to plan your visit. Keep in mind that digging in the cliffs is not permitted without permission. However, fossils on the beach, below the high tide line, can be collected and kept.

Explore how the prehistoric past, natural environments, and maritime heritage come to life and tell a unique story of the Chesapeake Bay. The Calvert Marine Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $11.00 for adults; $9.00 for seniors, military, and veterans with valid I.D, AAA and AARP members; $6.00 for children ages 5 - 12; children under 5 and museum members are admitted free. Proud participant in Museums for ALL. For more information about the museum, upcoming events, or membership, visit the website at www.calvertmarinemuseum. com or call 410-326-2042. Crafting College-Themed Cornhole Sets

A DIY Outdoor Game Adventure

What takes tailgates, picnics, outdoor parties and gatherings up a notch? Competitive games like cornhole, of course. Learn how you can make your own cornhole sets, plus show your pride for your college alma matter from this Family Home of the Month project.

The Backstory

When the pandemic hit, outdoor games surged in popularity. Remember those “social distancing” days? Cornhole was a safe way to gather with loved ones while still having fun and connecting.

So, when my husband finished our basement renovation — and we had leftover plywood and 2x4s — we thought cornhole sets would make for creative Christmas gifts for some of our relatives. But not just any regular cornhole sets. College-themed cornhole sets.

My sister-in-laws both attended American University, while their husbands attended the United States Naval Academy and Wake Forest University. Each couple got their own set with one board repping their college.

Materials

Wood Putty

Paint

Polyurethane

Primer

The Project

You could easily complete a cornhole project of your own in one weekend.

For my husband’s board side, James Madison University. The Pennsylvania State University for me. Since I can’t help myself and all Nittany Lions will understand… “We are! Penn State!”

1. To begin, the plywood for one set is half of a full sheet of plywood. If you don’t have a circular saw or table saw at home, ask the Home Depot employees to cut the plywood for you. My husband cut it with our Kreg circular saw guide to get straight cuts.

Project Details

Measuring Tape

2. For the 2x4s you’ll need four 8’ long pieces that you’ll then cut to size. Cut them with a miter saw to 2x4 x 48” and 2x4 x 21” for the frames. Tip: when buying 2x4s, look for the straightest pieces with the fewest knots.

(2) 24” x 48” pieces of 1/2”

(4) 2x4 x 48” for the frame

3. Next, attach the 48” pieces and the 21” pieces to make a rectangle. The 21” piece should be used inset of the 48” pieces. The thickness of the 48” pieces, plus the 21” piece will make your frames a full 24” wide. Use the 2 1/2” deck screws for these attachments.

4. The plywood pieces should fit directly over the two frames you built. Attach the plywood faces to the frames using the 1-5/8” deck screws. Put one in each corner and then two additional in the top and bottom of the plywood and four additional deck screws on each side for 16 total screws in the face of each board. We used a counter sunk drill bit, so the head of the screw is below the wood. Then go over the screw heads with wood filler.

5. After the wood filler has dried, use an orbital sander

12 chesapeakefamily.com | OCTOBER 2023 new & notable

to sand the wood fill, as well as the rest of the boards smooth.

6. Once sanding is completed, it’s time to make the hole for the board.

7. Start by marking the center point of the hole. The center will be 9” down from the top edge of the board and centered on the width (12” off the side). Using that center point, take out your compass and make a 6” diameter hole. Once the hole is drawn, drill a hole into the marked out area with a drill bit big enough to insert your jigsaw blade. Grab your jigsaw and cut out the 6” diameter hole that you drew. We did a 6” circle and a 7” circle because we painted a ring around the hole.

8. For the legs, cut a 2x4 into four 11-1/2” long pieces. Make a full 3-1/2” radius cut on one end of each leg. To make the cut, measure 1-3/4” down the length of the 2x4 and draw a line across it. Place a compass point centered on that line, then draw the arc.

9. Afterwards, place the leg inside the frame of the board with the radius piece up against the vertical piece. Clamp the leg in place. Find the middle of the line used to make the radius and drill a 1/2” hole through the leg and the side of the frame.

10. Next up: installing the legs with the carriage bolts. Push the carriage bolt through the new hole on the exterior and attach two washers. Then attach the new leg, another washer and the wing nut. You may need to remove the leg and sand down the radius top if they’re contacting the frame. The washers between the frame and the leg are intended to keep the leg from rubbing the inside of the frame.

11. To cut the angle on bottom of the leg, turn the box rightside up and set it on an elevated surface with the legs tucked underneath. Place a block or anything that’ll hold it up under the box, so the back of the platform is 12 inches off the table. Following, slide the box to the edge of the table and pull down the leg closest to the edge, so that it hangs just past the edge. Using the tabletop as a guide, draw a straight line across the bottom of the 2x4.

Repeat for the opposite side.

12. Then cut along the mark with your circular saw. Once this is complete, the box is fully constructed.

13. Now, it’s time to paint. No matter your design, you’ll need to prime the entire board with one coat of primer. Sand it afterwards. Next, use a pencil to draw your design. In the photos below, you can see how to use painters tape to protect your design from the main board color for the USNA board. After the main board color dries, pull off tape and paint the remaining white section.

14. If you don’t have artistic skills, stencils can assist with drawing and available online. I wasn’t able to find a stencil the right size, so I bought a smaller one and used a light trick to increase it in size.

15. Set the board up vertically in a dark room. Then, a few feet away, set up the stencil vertically. Tape the stencil down to hold it still. Put a light source like a flashlight behind the stencil and aim toward the board. The stencil will cast a shadow on the board. Adjust the size of the shadow by moving the board closer or further from the light source for the desired stencil size.

16. Once the painting is complete, I highly recommend using a polyurethane. It’ll help the corn sacks slide better and increase the durability of the board. I applied seven coats of a water-based polyurethane to our boards. Once dried, the boards were good to go!

17. You can DIY your own sacks using a fabric of your choice and whole kernel corn. To keep it simple, I purchased ours at cornholeworldwide.com and got synthetic fill to help them last longer.

18. Whether it’s a friendly family game or higher stakes tournament, let the games begin!

Boo-tiful Brownies

Simply Scary & Sweet

For an outdoor Halloween get together, I made these delightful brownie bites that were a perfect combination of sweet and scary. Not only that, they were incredibly easy to make and could have been even easier if I purchased store-bought brownies. All you need to put these yummy ghosts together are:

1 Bag Large Marshmallows

Brownies to cut into small squares (you can either make your own or grab pre-made brownies at your local grocery store)

16 oz. tub of white frosting black decorating gel (or dark food coloring to mix with a small reserve of the white frosting)

To assemble the Ghost Brownie:

1. Cut brownies into small bite-sized squares

2. Place one marshmallow on each brownie square

3. Microwave the tub of white frosting until it’s a smooth creamy texture and then spoon over each marshmallow brownie bite

4. Let icing cool and set

5. Create eyes and mouths with the black decorating gel

Tip: I used a cupcake/muffin tin to keep the brownie bites separate and to catch extra icing

Prioritizing Preventative Healthcare

Empowering Women To Put Their Health First

Annual health care visits like physicals, gynecological exams, dental cleanings, and skin care exams might not be on your list of favorite things to do, but their importance should not be underestimated. Our health is not something to take for granted and annual exams are proven to aid in improving overall health and increase lifespan. Many health conditions, when caught early, are easier to manage than if left untreated for lengthy periods of time. Better yet, preventative care can often reverse various health conditions and complications, or avoid them altogether.

Why We Put It Off

For parents, it is second nature to ensure that children are receiving proper preventative care. However, it seems much easier as adults to let our own health care take a seat on the sidelines. Maybe we’re “too busy”. Maybe we let fear and anxiety get the better of us. Whatever the reasons are, none of them are good enough to put our preventative health care on pause. Not only do we need to ensure we are taking care of ourselves, for ourselves, but we should also be taking care of ourselves for those we love.

Dr. Erin Kinney specializes in naturopathic medicine. She says that a common reason people skip out on preventative health care is that they

are busy.

She puts it like this. “Prevention in terms of screenings is easy and takes little time out of your day. Let’s say for example you go for a mammogram as part of your preventative care. If they detect breast cancer while it is stage one, it is very easily treatable. But if you put it off because you don’t want to make the time for it, by the time it is detected it might be stage four. By this point not only will you be taking even more time to go through more rigorous treatment, but it very well could cost you your life. The small amount of time you spend on preventative care now, will save you so much more in the long run.”

Other factors that prohibit people

20 chesapeakefamily.com | OCTOBER 2023

from scheduling regular preventive visits include things like access to quality care, high costs associated with care (especially for those who may be uninsured), and negative past experiences with a medical provider.

Dr. Melissa Ramsey MSN, RN, FNP-C says that if access to care is an issue due to cost, people should look at local community centers such as the University of Maryland. They often offer free screenings and cancer education programs. She also suggests checking local county and Department of Health websites which can help locate options for free or low-cost health care and preventative screenings.

Another contributing factor to not receiving preventative care can be feelings of shame, anxiety, or fear. It can be scary to think about what might be uncovered during preventative care visits and annual screenings. But not knowing does not make the problem go away, it simply robs the patient and providers of opportunities for early intervention.

Find the Right Provider

Dr. Susan Moreland, DNP, CRN says that sometimes people put off health care because they are uncomfortable talking about certain aspects of their health and lifestyle. She gives the example of someone who is unhappy with their weight. She says that some patients might not be ready or feel uncomfortable discussing their weight and the complications associated with being overweight or obese. She says that this is why it is important for patients to have providers whom they feel comfortable with. Doctors are not there to shame patients or make them feel embarrassed about lifestyle or health concerns, they are there to educate and support patients in making the best choices and changes to aid people in being the healthiest versions of themselves. “We look at the whole person to determine the right path for their health journey. Setting attainable goals together to help maximize their health.” She says.

Why Preventative Care Matters

Our bodies are complex systems. There are many internal and external factors that contribute to our overall health. While not all illnesses, diseases, and health complications can be prevented, preventing health issues is always a better option than trying to fix them once they’ve appeared.

Waiting until symptoms arise to get checked out is a dangerous game to play. Dr. Melissa Ramsey says “Some diseases, such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and some cancers, do not have early symptoms that will prompt a person to see a medical provider. Early detection is what saves lives. Once symptoms begin, the damage could have already taken place. Preventative care can be the difference between life and death.”

Dr. Kinney says that a good primary care doctor can help patients make sure they are scheduling all of the preventative care and screenings that are necessary to look at the entirety of the body’s systems. For assigned females, early detection of breast and cervical cancer is imperative for disease prevention and better treatment outcomes. “Cervical and breast cancer are two of the leading causes of cancer amongst those AFAB.” Says Maria Mayzel, MSN, CNM, WHNP-BC.

Regular preventative visits can also include screenings for sexually transmitted diseases, mental health concerns, and cognitive assessments for older adults. Dr. Moreland says that in addition to screening for cancer with mammograms, colonoscopies, skin screenings, prostate exams, and blood work; cardiovascular screenings and blood work to look at the function of a patient’s kidneys, liver, and thyroid, as well as any concerns about diabetes are an important part of ensuring all systems of the body are being assessed. She says that these screenings change by age and phase of life as well. For her Medicare patients, a mental status exam as well as a fall risk assessment is also included in routine preventative care.

Regular dermatology appointments are important for several reasons, including early detection of skin cancer. “Early detection is key as many skin cancers are easily treatable if caught early.” Says Catalina Lehrer, MMS, PA-C. ``If left untreated some skin cancers can progress to cause permanent deformity or mortality such as melanoma.” Even without a family history of skin cancer, Lehrer says that regular skin checks are important for other reasons as well. She says that some skin conditions such as unresolved rashes or lesions can be symptoms of underlying internal issues.

Approach Health Care With An Empowered Mindset

A certain amount of anxiety and uncertainty is understandable when it comes to preventative health care. It can be difficult not to get stuck in the “what if” thought process. By shifting our mindset from “what if they find something wrong” to “these visits help ensure I stay at my healthiest” we can potentially alleviate feelings of fear and anxiety that often accompany health care concerns.

Rather than inspiring fear, knowledge of one's own health should inspire confidence. “Knowledge is power. There are many tests available that can help clients learn their current health status, ultimately allowing them to navigate their long-term health care decisionmaking.” Says Mayzel. “It’s ultimately very empowering to be in charge of your health.”

Helping patients understand what to expect and how to prepare for preventative exams and appointments can create a more empowered mindset toward health care. Dr. Kinney lets all of her patients know that any changes that need to be made will not be an insurmountable task that needs to be completed all at once. With the guidance and support of their health care providers, patients can make small changes over time that can have longlasting and substantial impact on their overall health and longevity. Dr. Kinney suggests that patients come prepared for their annual visits. List out any concerns they have, and any lifestyle changes they would like to make, and have as much of their family history available as possible. For those who might not have access to family history, Dr. Kinney says there is nothing to worry about. Providers might decide to be more proactive in preventative care if family history is not available to use as a guideline.

Doctor-Patient Relationship

A good relationship between patient and provider can make all the difference. Patients should feel comfortable with their care team and feel like they can be open, honest, and vulnerable. Dr. Moreland says a good patient-provider relationship is a collaborative effort designed to help maximize a patient’s health. All five of these providers say that the relationship between a patient and their doctor can make all the difference in how people feel about health care in general. If a

patient does not feel comfortable with their provider or feels like they are not being heard, or can’t open up, it might be time for a switch.

Some people find going to the doctor to be an incredibly stressful event. Letting your doctor know ahead of time that you are nervous, talking through the anxiety with a therapist, or bringing a support person to visit can help alleviate distress. Lehrer says that it is perfectly acceptable to bring a support person to your appointments if that helps you feel more comfortable.

When was the last time you scheduled your annual physical? Are you due for a routine dental check? Have you ever had a full body skin check? Take an inventory of your health and wellness goals and get those preventative visits scheduled for 2024! You have so much to live for and deserve to feel your best.

Learning Activities

Games

and

Adventures for Kids

Not all learning happens at school. Parents can teach kids very important skills while having fun with these fun educational activities. The supplies needed are probably things you have around the house, but if you have to buy anything, it won’t cost much.

Three Educational Activities

1. SHOPPING SPREE

Equipment cost: $5.5 +

Equipment required: Paper, Pen/ pencil, Money, Treats

According to a recent study, almost a third of adults (31%) say they wish they had learned more about managing their money in school, so why not help educate your little ones on the topic at

home by creating a “fake” shop? Turn a section of a room into a makeshift shop using items you know they would love, such as their favorite toys and snacks, and give them some money to play with. This money could be real or fake, it is entirely your choice! Price all the items to encourage the child to engage in simple math to determine if they do or do not have enough money for certain items.

A trip to your local Dollar Store can provide supplies and products for the store.

2. WORD SNAP

Equipment cost: $6.5 + Equipment required: Paper (Index Cards work great), Pen/pencil, Colored Pencils

Everyone loves a game of ‘snap,’ so why not make your own version to help improve memory and vocabulary? Choose a mixture of words depending on the child’s age and vocabulary range and write the words onto DIY cards. Once all the cards are ready, lie each card face down and get the children to pick a card. Encourage each child to read the word from their card out loud and then choose another — if the two cards do not match, put both cards back down again and try until all pairs have been found!

Equipment cost: $5.5 +

Equipment required: Paper, Pen/ pencil

To help improve map-reading and navigation skills, why not hold a treasure hunt in your home or garden? Create a map of your garden or home showing different locations where players can find clues. The clues will eventually lead kids to the treasure. This activity is highly stimulating, and it will improve communication and teamwork skills and encourage ‘out the box’ thinking. It will also result in a sense of achievement, so don’t forget X marks the spot!

This fun activity could take some time, depending on age and ability. but it will only cost $5.

Three Mindfulness Activities

Understanding a child’s emotions and physical needs is crucial, as learning and long school days can often be overwhelming for kids. It has been found that anxiety disorders are estimated to affect 5-19% of all children and adolescents, with around 2-5% of these children being younger than 12 years old.

The ability to be mindful is excellent for lowering tension and can enhance future learning. There are a variety of calming activities that children can engage in to reduce stress and anxiety levels.

24 chesapeakefamily.com | OCTOBER 2023
3. TREASURE HUNT

1. NATURE ART

Equipment cost: $4.0 +

Equipment required: Paper, Glue

Studies have shown that over 80% of teachers say children are more engaged in learning when taking lessons outdoors. With this in mind, why not help to relax your child’s mind by taking them outdoors into the fresh air for a lesson?

We all know how curious kids can be, so combining the outdoors with crafts and making nature art is a great way to stimulate the brain. Let them explore and gather various materials, such as leaves, grass, rocks, sticks, etc., that can be found outdoors and create a piece of art or self-portrait. It keeps them busy from any worries while feeding their curious nature.

2. FIVE SENSES CHALLENGE

Equipment cost: $5.5 +

Equipment required: Paper, Pen/ pencil

This is a common method to help relieve someone from anxious thoughts and is perfect for practicing with children, as they can also put their senses to the test. Take your child for a walk and ask them to hone in on their own senses by observing their surroundings. Get them to record what they see, hear, taste, smell, and touch by either writing or drawing them. This allows them to explore how their body functions in a fun and educational way.

3. CLOUD CATCHING

Equipment cost: Free

Equipment required: Green space

Lay down outside with kids and look up at the sky. Encourage children to say what they can see “hidden” in the clouds, pointing out any shapes and images that their mind may create. This is a free activity that can be great for harvesting creativity and even developing their story-telling skills. All you need is green space to enjoy this activity. Building Resilient Kids

4 Essential Lessons in Ambition and Determination

In the ever-evolving landscape of parenting and education, one constant remains—our desire to see our children grow into strong, resilient individuals who can overcome life’s challenges. As parents and educators, we’ve always

believed in the importance of ambition and determination. But it’s crucial to recognize their significance in teaching young children.

Picture a lively classroom filled with enthusiastic kids who have all sorts of dreams. However, there’s a

problem in this vibrant mix: many of these students prefer instant gratification over working hard to overcome obstacles.

Teachers often find that the issue isn’t solely related to the students’ desire or ability to succeed; rather, it often pertains to their limited exposure to socio-economic opportunities that can help them cultivate ambition and determination. Ambition and determination are not elusive traits reserved for a fortunate few; they are qualities that can and should be instilled in every young heart.

This realization sparks a series of insights on how to impart these essential life skills to young children. I contacted New Jersey reading and mathematics teacher Susan Ben Abdallah, for her insight and tips.

Stay Focused on Your Goal

Early in life, we learn that setbacks are part of any adventure. It becomes crucial to teach children to stay focused on their goals, even when the going gets tough. By allowing children to encounter challenges and providing them with the time and basic materials to explore their interests, a transformation is witnessed.

“In school, we teach students and families about the importance of productive struggle, that students need opportunities to be challenged and learn how to work through these

26 chesapeakefamily.com | OCTOBER 2023

challenges. It is what helps them develop perseverance. In early childhood, another key principle is allowing kids to have time and basic materials to explore their interests, encounter challenges, and overcome the challenges,” says Ben Abdallah.

During a typical school day, teachers emphasize the significance of constructive challenges to students and their families by conveying the idea that students require the chance to face difficulties and acquire problemsolving skills. This process fosters their resilience. During the early stages of childhood development, another essential principle involves granting children the time and basic resources to explore their interests, confront challenges, and successfully overcome them.

Ben Abdallah shares an example. “Recently, I watched a five-yearold use two shades of construction paper, scissors and a glue stick to create a wearable purse. When she encountered challenges, she didn’t ask for help, cry or give up, she preserved because she had been taught how to.”

Hard Work Pays Off

Ben Abdallah believes hard work and a growth mindset go hand in hand. She shares, “It is important for students to understand that we are not born with fixed intelligence, and while some things may come easier to some people, hard work is the way to make tasks easier for us. Hard work is necessary for success!”

It’s Okay to Be Different

“The uniqueness of each child resonates with us. We see the need to celebrate individuality and help children understand that their dreams can be distinct from others. We need to move away from the idea that academic success is the only important measure in a school. Trades, the arts and technology need to be added so that students have a wide variety of topics to explore,” says Ben Abdallah.

Celebrate Small Victories

The journey also teaches us the importance of celebrating achievements, no matter how small, as we work toward larger goals.

“To make this concept tangible for students, we break down their goals into smaller, achievable steps. Together, we create visual aids like posters and digital documents to track progress. Celebrations need not be grand events; a positive phone call or a note home could work wonders. The crucial message is that hard work and small steps are integral to achieving dreams,” says Ben Abdallah.

As we reflect on our roles as parents and educators, we see a hopeful horizon. Teaching ambition and determination to young children is not just an aspiration; it’s a tangible goal. As we continue to evolve in our approach to education and parenting, let us remember that we have the power to shape ambitious and determined individuals who can navigate life’s challenges with grace.

By staying focused on goals, emphasizing hard work, celebrating uniqueness, and cherishing small victories, we can nurture these qualities in our children. The potential for evolution in our educational systems is vast, and by harnessing it, we can empower the next generation to achieve greatness, one determined step at a time.
