Unfortunately kids are now learning the horrors of school violence. My lesson learned - we have to do everything in our power to keep our kids safe - all kids, not just our own. The time for talking is past, Now it is time for action. Counselors were generous enough with their time to let us know the effect that violence is having on kids. Please take the time to read the article “The Impact of Violence at Maryland Schools” starting on page 17. Skinned knees from bike riding is nothing compared to the mental trauma violence is taking on kids.

Echoes of Enslavedthe

n my walk this morning I watched a kid, clad only in gym shorts and a big pair of crocs, practice riding his skateboard. He was in the street on a small incline when his skateboard kicked up and he flew off, followed by his crocs spinning in the air. He wasn’t hurt but it seemed like some roadburn would soon follow if he didn’t at least put on long pants and a shirt, not to mention protective gear.

You’ll want to hold the hands of little kids who have a hard time staying on the boardwalk. The water isn’t deep here but it would not be fun to fish someone out of the water if they accidentally took a tumble in.

Jug Bay is all about observing the critters who live there. Even the Nature Play Space has an element that looks like a giant bird’s nest. The Otter and Railroad Bed Trails each have an observation blind for those who like to bird watch.

ou survived potty training and the terrible twos; you’ve reclaimed your bed, and your child is now somewhat self-sufficient. Life ought to be smooth sailing from here on, right? Perhaps. That is if you don’t take into account the elementary school-age battles that lie just ahead. But don’t sweat it. The following tips will help you ride out this adventuresome yet trying stage.

SURVIVAL GUIDEE L E M E N T A R Y S C H O O L 8 P A R E N T I N G T I P S F O R A G E S 6 T O 1 0 B Y K I M B E R L Y B L A K E R Y

Lying. Every child tells a lie at some point or another. Even most adults are guilty of occasional white lies. Still, teaching kids to be honest is vital to developing into trustworthy adults and their ability to form intimate relationships.

Tattletales. Does your child tattle every time a sibling or playmate breaks a rule? Kids tattle for many reasons. Sometimes they don’t understand the difference between tattling and telling about something important. Other times, kids are looking to get another into trouble. So explain the difference between tattling and telling. Tattling is when someone breaks a rule (or when there is no rule), and breaking the rule is relatively harmless. Telling, on the other hand, is when another child does something that could cause harm to oneself or others. Make a rule that you don’t want to hear any tattling, but that telling is okay and even necessary.

Talk to your child about how lying diminishes yours and others’ ability to trust your child. Explain how it can impact your child’s relationships. Then, if you catch your kid in a lie, explain how his or her future freedom and privileges are dependent on

Also, find a distraction-free location in your home that is always for homework. Then require your kids to put their phones on the charger, away from the area when doing homework.

Name-calling and teasing. Sometimes when kids call each other names, they’re just playing. If they’re going back and forth at each other, both laughing and having a good time, it probably isn’t a big deal. As long as it’s play, balanced, and no one’s feelings are getting hurt, you can let it go. But if it’s one-sided, mean-spirited, or the child on the receiving end seems angry, upset, scared, or hurt by it, it’s usually best to intervene. First, try to empower the teased child, and encourage him or her to tell the other to stop. If necessary, take a more direct approach, and make clear to the child doing the teasing how hurtful the behavior is and that it isn’t acceptable.

The birds and the bees. The question of where babies come from, and discussions of puberty can leave even the most open-minded parents fumbling. So, prepare in advance for the inevitable discussions so you can answer questions in the best way possible and without showing discomfort. Your comfort is essential to making your kid feel comfortable and will lead to more openness from your child as he or she matures.

Kimberly Blaker is a freelance writer. She also owns an online bookshop, Sage Rare & Collectible Books, specializing in out-of-print, scarce, signed, and first editions; fine bindings; ephemera and more at sagerarebooks.com

In the later elementary years, discuss puberty and sex more completely. Many kids reach puberty by the age of 10. So make sure your pre-teen is fully prepared for the changes that’ll take place. By late elementary, some kids are already talking about it among each other and are full of misinformation. So having this discussion is crucial to ensure your child is accurately informed about sex Defiance. As kids grow, they become more independent – and with independence comes defiance. To deal with defiance, lay out the rules ahead of time, so you and your kids know the consequences.

When your child is defiant, remember the following. Consistency is crucial to being effective. Also, don’t argue.

If your child tries to debate you after you’ve already stated the issue and laid down the consequence, calmly say you’ve already made up your mind, and you’re done discussing it. Then leave the room, so you’re not tempted to argue or give in to badgering.

how well you can trust your child. Also, to build your kid’s trust in you, practice being open and nonjudgmental. This will go a long way toward your child’s openness with you. Media overload. With the overwhelming variety of media available to kids, it’s hard to know where to draw the line. But the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommends kids be limited to no more than two hours of entertainment-based screen time per day. To gain cooperation, invite your child to help you establish media use rules. List the various forms of media used by your child, including tv, video games, computer, and cell phone. Establish a total number of hours per day your kid can use media. Then ask your child to help you break down how much of that time can be spent on specific forms. Also, discuss the measures you’ll take if rules are violated. Chore wars. As your child grows, so should his or her responsibilities. In the elementary years, kids can pick up their rooms, set and clear off the table, sort their laundry, fold laundry, put away their clean clothes, bring in the mail, rake leaves, and dust, among other simple tasks. So have your child choose a small number of simple chores. As your kid grows, increase the amount or level of difficulty. To gain cooperation, set a regular schedule for each task, and offer daily or weekly rewards or an allowance. Homework hassles. This is a routine challenge for many parents. So hold a meeting with your child to discuss homework. Explain you’re going to set some rules. Then give your kid a couple of choices to increase cooperation. One option might be 30 minutes of free time or media time after school before having to begin homework. Another option could be to do chores and free time right after school. Then homework will start immediately following dinner. But avoid saving homework until late in the evening.

To get started, during the early elementary years, read Where Did I Come From? or another ageappropriate book to your child. This takes the guesswork out of what to say and how to say it.

What Parents and Students Need To Know

BULLYING IN SCHOOLS

When concerning incidents do arise and parents or students learn of bullying (whether isolated or repeated) Voegtlin says that it is important for parents and students to know where to go for assistance in addressing these issues. The AACPS website has a specific form where both parents and students can report each incident that occurs. This Bullying, Harassment or Intimidation Reporting Form can be found at aacps.org/antibullying, and is available in both Spanish and English. Once the report is submitted Voegtlin explains that the principal of the school at which the incident occurred is notified and must open an investigation. “The bullying report is a way to make sure that each incident is handled in the appropriate way. With the form comes an accountability piece, administrators have a timeline where they must complete documentation and an investigation of each incident.” He says. If students are not comfortable or do not wish to fill out the form, they can also go see their school counselor for assistance in addressing the matter. Voegtlin says that when incidents of bullying or conflict between students arise, the counselor will often meet with both the victim and the aggressor, but will never force the two to be in the same room together to discuss the incident.

What is Bullying?

Ryan Voegtlin is the Director of Student Services for Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS). In broad terms he says that bullying can be described as behaviors that are intentional and repeated over time. While repetitive and targeted behaviors directed toward one student, or group of students can be the hallmark of bullying, he is careful to note that some isolated incidents may also be classified as bullying behavior. “Bullying comes with intent.” He says. “We also look for the power differential and behaviors that create a hostile learning environment.”

While we hope that more often than not, school is a positive environment for youth, the reality is that bullying is something that our children may have to contend with. Starting the new year with a plan for addressing bullying, should the need arise, can help families feel more prepared if something does happen.

Advice from the Experts

Proper reporting is an important part of documenting incidents and ensuring that appropriate actions are taken. There are also strategies that parents and students can utilize in the home to be proactive when it comes to preventing bullying, and to address any instances that arise.

Cyberbullying

Procedures and Reporting When Bullying Occurs

Each school has a code of conduct and student handbook. It is highly encouraged that parents and students familiarize themselves with these standards. This will help families have a good understanding of what constitutes bullying behaviors, how bullying is to be addressed in the schools, the people in the school system who are there to help, and what the expectations are for students in terms of attitudes and behaviors toward faculty and peers.

“Administrators and counselors will work with the victim to provide support and offer appropriate skills and strategies, and will also work with the bully to identify what is causing the behaviors and to address any underlying causes and factors.” Voegtlin also emphasizes the importance of reminding students that while it can be scary to speak up, it is an important step in protecting themselves, and protecting others from similar behaviors.

A common question among parents is how instances of cyberbullying or bullying off school grounds are handled. Voegtlin says that anything that happens outside of school that has a direct connection to the school environment including buses, bus stops, and school sponsored activities can be addressed through the administrators. While not all offschool incidents will fit the criteria to be handled by the school directly, Voegtlin encourages parents and students to still reach out to the counselor as they can provide the resources, referrals, and information necessary to help connect you with the right people to help address the situation.

he new school year has arrived and with it the possibility of bullying in school. Transition periods can be tough for students and families, and while there very well might be an air of excitement that accompanies the back to school transition, there might also be worries, concerns, and anxieties that pop up about different aspects of being back in the school building. In a perfect world, bullying would not exist and school would be a place of joy, learning, fun, and friendship.

Finding the courage to report an incident can be difficult and kids can benefit from that validation. Beyond school provided resources, Stackhouse says that if needed, parents can also get help from providers outside of the school system to offer additional support. “It’s normal to have an outside clinician help children therapeutically and work collaboratively with school counselors to help your child transfer the skills into the school environment.” SheSamanthasays.

One tough and less frequently talked about aspect of bullying is how parents can address the issue when it is their child that is doing the bullying. Straub suggests the following steps:

She says “Adults have an obligation to use their power to create safe environments for kids.” She suggests things like helping kids develop a rich emotional vocabulary. “Using feelings words often with younger children helps them develop their own feelings vocabulary. Use feelings words to describe your own day and your own emotional state.” And above all, she says adults should model kind and inclusive behaviors.

• Ask the child, “What will you do to make this situation right? I’m here to support you along the way.”

• Get the Whole Picture Kimberly Palmiotto is a local LCPC and Educational Psychologist. She says that when it comes to bullying, it is important for parents to get the full story. She says parents need to understand what happened from their child’s perspective, as well as gain insight from a teacher or other adult who may have been present. Once they have the full picture, she encourages parents to seek assistance and involvement from the counselor and to continue to create a bridge in communication between school staff, parent, and child. One more piece of advice that is often overlooked has to do with how a parent might feel personally when it comes to their own experiences with bullying. Palmiotto explains that for parents who may have experienced their own bullying, these types of situations can be triggering and bring up old traumas. She has the following advice for how parents can contend with issues surrounding bullying when it brings up their own past in a difficult or intense way.“When you are triggered, take a moment to identify what your own experiences and triggers are. Ask yourself, What was it like for me at this age? What were the experiences I had growing up with bullying? What lessons have I learned that I can pass on to my children? What do I wish would have been handled for me differently and how can I use that to support my child? If you are feeling impacted by the events that your child is dealing with or past traumas are resurfacing, it is a good idea to seek out professional help for yourself as well and to see a therapist or mental health professional.”

• State how this situation makes YOU feel. (Disappointed, shocked, sad, angry.)

Cyber Bullying

Verbal bullying is coming out with painful words nick Verbal Bullying works closely with the school system. She believes that bullying is preventable. “I try to stay away from extremes. However, I think with a strong tier 1 system in place, it can be drastically reduced and possibly avoided entirely.” She says that when it comes to supporting a child once a bullying incident does occur, parents can help by letting their child know that they did the right thing by reporting it.

Straub is a local LCPC.

What was meant to be a more relaxed year, three years after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, has been just the opposite. This year, dozens of total school shootings have been accounted for across the country. Maryland has significantly contributed to this number in the past 50+ years, ranking in the top ten states with the most school shootings, according to World Population Review -and this rise in crime doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon.

SEPTEMBER 2022 | chesapeakefamily.com 17

During the 2019–20 school year, about 939,000 violent incidents and 487,000 nonviolent incidents occurred in U.S. public schools. Seventy percent of schools reported having at least one violent incident, and 62 percent reported having at least one nonviolent incident.*

T The

he impact of violence at Maryland schools reaches much further than the people directly affected. It seems that nearly every week, a crime resulting in serious injuries, or even death, occurs. While most of these crimes involve guns and are targeted toward adults, some have another intended targetunsuspecting students.

“This is to say that a school shooting ANYWHERE puts me and counselors/ educators EVERYWHERE into crisis response mode. And that is because our communities internalize these types of tragedies, regardless of physical proximity, on a personal level. School shootings are not just a crisis for the communities that are directly affected. They are a crisis by proxy for all schools, educators, and students. And we know that repeated exposure to trauma can take a toll on a body and a brain, causing spikes in cortisol that can lead to chronic inflammation and physical ailments, brain fog that can make learning difficult if not impossible, and difficulties with self-regulation.”

total of 27 school shootings have taken place across the country since May 25, 2022. School faculty is painfully aware of the danger this imposes: “Almost every day there’s a new news story about a mass shooting, whether in a school or not,” says Sabrina Elshafei, a teacher at Folly Quarter Middle School. “As teachers, we have a lot more training dedicated to this area, which is scary, but necessary.”

Processing Big Emotions

“Certainly, students experiencing grief or anxiety in the aftermath of a shooting--even a shooting they simply heard about on the news or social media-- do not function at their best.

Increased Student Anxiety

“I have noticed an increase in anxiety surrounding students feeling safe when they go to school. We can help decrease their anxiety by talking to them and offering therapeutic services in school and at home,” says Dr. Shadonna Harris from PsychExperts & Associates, Inc. “Yes, we’re seeing kids who are very anxious about upsetting events, including violence in schools. Kids are under significant amounts of stress-from the pandemic to concerns about school safety and academic performance--so it’s important to pay attention to how your child is handling stress and anxiety as they return to school,” reports Dr. Abena BrownElhillali, clinical psychologist with Kennedy Krieger Institute’s Center for Child and Family Traumatic Stress.

And the same is true for educators, which means that, in the aftermath of a shooting, in order for schools to fully serve their students, it’s critical for all community members to take time and space necessary to process big emotions when they come up. But time is a finite resource and one that is notoriously hard to come by in schools, not to mention the resource of qualified mental health professionals to guide suchFurther, dialogues.evenif there IS space and time available, that doesn’t eliminate the looming fear of “’could this happen in my school?’” for anyone. And thus the threat of a school shooting becomes another background worry for students (and their adults) to carry around--taking up mental real estate that could otherwise be used for learning, positive risk taking, or forging important social connections.”

Counselors’ Fears About School Violence Samantha Straub, MS, LCPC, Chair of Upper School Counseling and Wellness at Severn School explains, “Whenever I hear of another school shooting on the news, my fight or flight response kicks in, even if the event took place hundreds of miles from my own school building. My heart breaks for the victims, their families, their community, the first responders, and, of course, their teachers, administrators, and fellow-students. I go right to, “That could have been my school.” And I know that students and educators all over the country go to that same place in their heads. I know that, in the days and weeks after a school shooting, I’m going to have some of my own students in my counseling office needing a safe space to process their fears and confusion. I know that my school is going to look to my fellow counselors and me for guidance in the aftermath.”

What if kids don’t want to go to school? “It is recommended that parents encourage children to attend school rather than avoid school. Avoiding school typically makes the fear and anxiety more intense.” “If there are in fact safety concerns at or around the school, parents should take the time to listen to their child’s concerns and take steps to address them. Parents and children can also review the school’s safety precautions and procedures, noting for example how front doors remain locked and visitors are required to check in. It’s also helpful to have your child identify the fun and exciting things they are looking forward to as school starts. Focusing on the fun aspects of school can help children to manage their anxiety levels.”

Talking about scary or disturbing events with your child

“When anxiety is impacting daily functioning and children are unable to engage in their regular routines and activities, additional help may be needed. Parents should offer support and stability and encourage children to continue with regular routines, especially regular school attendance. If this approach is ineffective and anxiety persists for more than two weeks, I would encourage checking in with a mental health professional. Anxiety that persists for more than four weeks can indicate an anxiety disorder.”

SEPTEMBER 2022 | chesapeakefamily.com 19 notable changes in physical functioning, including changes in their sleeping habits and appetite. Trouble falling asleep and increased sleep disturbance (nightmares, sleep walking) can also be a sign of anxiety. It’s also important to note that children who are anxious often complain of headaches and stomach pain. These signs should prompt a conversation with your child rather than be brushed off.”

“It is definitely a good idea to only share potentially upsetting information in ageappropriate ways, on a “need-to-know” basis. If your child needs to be informed of an upsetting situation to stay safe, then share the information in a sensitive, age-appropriate way. Especially for younger children, it is not necessary to discuss scary events in the news if the events are not directly affecting them, or if they have no other awareness of the event.”

Students Speak Maryland high schoolers' POV on violence in school

JK, 17 The school just told us to run if we can, or to hide.

FK, 17 There was a threat on social media and many kids left. I was not super panicked cause my mother who was part of the staff was in the building. Did the school have anything in place to protect you or prevent the threats from coming true?

A

By Keegan Cardoza, 16 year old student

JK, 17 I have only ever been in 1 school shooting threat, and I panicked like many of my peers, but we came together to calm each other.

EP, 19 I have had three school shooting threats. I was scared for one, but the other two ended up being jokes.

As you read these interviews, think about your own answers and what we can do to change things. If you don't have ideas, what about a kid, relative, or friend? What would you, or they change about the school's reaction and protocol?

Have you ever experienced a school shooting or a threat?

VH, 16 No, the school had nothing in place. I didn’t feel any safer, especially as the staff acted as if there was no threat.

LM, 16 I have experienced at least two school shooting threats, if not more. They filled me with overwhelming uncertainty. There was a lack of reassurance.

20 chesapeakefamily.com SEPTEMBER 2022 s parents are sending their kids back to school, not only must we worry about finding the right school supplies, but the right protection.

LM, 16 My school had a lockdown drill to prevent people getting in, but it also prevented them from getting out. They have police at my school at least two that alternate, but they don’t make me necessarily feel safer.

VH, 16 I've experienced three or more school shooting threats and 1 bomb threat. There have been so many that some are forgotten and pushed out of my memories. I remember being petrified. Seeing the people panic and rush to leave fills you with so much fear.

Yes protection, school shootings have increased significantly in America since COVID. Although school should be fun, interesting, and informative it has proven to be dangerous in both the cities and rural parts of America.

In these interviews we talk to students about threats made, how the school dealt with it, and what they should change to keep their students safe.

KC, 16 My school has always had police presence, but they never made me feel safer. They seemed to come randomly as they wished. How did the school and staff react, what would you have

KC, 16

I have experienced at least four school shooting threats and 2 bomb threats. I was petrified like anyone would be, the staff and other students only made it worse.

The staff downplayed the situation because nothing had been confirmed. School shootings have increased significantly since COVID. How do you think COVID played a part in the increase? If you don't think it affected the school shootings, explain why.

VH, 16 As a community we should protest gun rights, for guns are so easy to attain at any age. Either at home or in a store.

VH, 16

JK, 17 We should work on stopping bullying, and help students get the resources they need, when it comes to mental health.

FK, 17 Vote for people in congress who will make better gun laws. What do you believe the reason for school shootings is? VH, 16

EP, 19 I think mental illness, loose gun laws, racism, and misogyny play a part. Most shooters are white males that come from difficult backgrounds and aren't taught to handle their emotions due to toxic masculinity.

The school told me that everything was fine while all the students panicked and some teachers left. I think that I would change the way people get information in the situation.

The first time didn’t even make it to the schools radar because it was a social media post that had been deleted before they ever saw it. The third one was handled poorly by the staff. The staff spread so much misinformation about the threat that it made the students panic more, although a select few were able to calm some of the students.

SEPTEMBER 2022 | chesapeakefamily.com 21 changed to improve the school's protocol?

LM, 16 The staff didn’t react, but the kids did, they called their parents in a panic. I would improve upon the situation by educating kids about these events, guns, and how law enforcement handles these situations.

Thank you for taking the time to read this article. As you send your kids back to school, ask your school and your politicians questions on their protocols such as ‘how do you prevent these situations?’ Do your research and see how many threats your county has had and how does it compare to other counties. Research what others think we should do to prevent future violence in school. This is a draining topic that is uncomfortable but it cannot be ignored and should be an ongoing conversation in your household.

LM, 16 I think that mental health and paranoia may have been affected by COVID. People overtime being alone with their thoughts has created a lack of security, which results in the purchase of firearms.

I believe that one reason school shootings happen may be because of the easy accessibility to guns. LM, 16 They may be caused by a lack of information and too much miseducation, and ignoring one's mental health. I also think the trauma and place children grow up may affect them as well later in life.

I would have them tell us the truth as they know it. Two out of the four times they lied to us and said there was no threat even though we could see them on social media. ‑—KC, 16

Schools should be more inclusive and care more about their students mental health, not just seeing them as grades, numbers, and statistics LM, 16 I say politicians should increase the bans and laws surrounding firearms. People should get a long mental health evaluation before they are allowed to own a gun or weapon.

FK, 17

KC, 16 I would have them tell us the truth as they know it. Two out of the four times they lied to us and said there was no threat even though we could see them on social media.

KC, 16

EP, 19 We should have more mental health access for children and lobby to enforce stricter gun laws. We should have counselors trained to give mental health guidance to students and actually train teachers to recognize a child in crisis.

I believe that they start because of the lack of mental health care in school and young childhood.

VH, 16 I think that it might be because of the mental health crisis. During COVID I could see many people's mental health deteriorate due to being alone so long.

KC, 16 We should fight for stricter gun laws and more availability to mental health care Schools should teach students about guns and what may happen in the case of a school shooting.

JK, 17 I feel like they stem from stress, and bullying.

EP, 19

EP, 19 COVID had a part in school shootings since many people lost a year or two of socialization and for someone who is mentally ill that kind of isolation can worsen their mental stability. Additionally social media took a rise during this time and there was a lot of media romanticizing shooters so it may have influenced this behavior. What can we do as a community to prevent school shootings?

American Visionary Art Museum, Baltimore

Art museum curators and educators work hard to connect their communities, including children, to art. During the pandemic, programs and events for children went virtual, but things are slowly returning to normal. Museum educators are finding ways to safely hold some in-person classes and events for kids, making this the perfect time to take your children to an art museum. Here’s a roundup of kid-friendly art museums in Maryland.

y first real memory of a visit to an art museum is from a third grade field trip to the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, California. The collection included sculptures made of chocolate and several Andy Warhol depictions of soup cans. At the end of the field trip, we were invited to create art from found objects such as colorful cardboard and pompoms, and I was hooked. Art museums were great.

The American Visionary Art Museum is the official national museum for works created by self-taught artists — and kids really connect to the art on display here. Some works of art are created from unusual materials, such as wooden matches, while others are so large that they have to be displayed in a special building. Still others are small kinetic sculptures, and children can push buttons to make the sculptures move. Kids will enjoy viewing artworks that are quirky, insightful, playful, and thought-provoking. Don’t be surprised if your children want

As you drive up to the American Visionary Art Museum, you will instantly realize that this is a different kind of art museum.

Throughout the year, the Center offers a variety of art classes for children and families. Free Family Arts Days take place on summer Saturdays; led by an art teacher, families work together on a creative art project. Advance registration and payment are required for pottery, painting, and other visual arts classes for kids, which are held year-round. Visiting families are always welcome.

The Baltimore Museum of Art’s collection is large and diverse, so your kids are sure to find a gallery that intrigues them. Highlights include ancient mosaics from Antioch, Syria; African and Asian art; Native American art; the Cone Collection, which features contemporary art by Henri Matisse, Picasso, and more; American art, including a gallery of artworks and furniture created by Maryland artists; and medieval and Renaissance European art. Temporary exhibitions showcase items from the BMA’s collections as well as works by a diverse group of contemporary artists.

• Keep it short, especially for younger children. You don’t have to see every work of art to make your museum visit worthwhile. Focus on a theme, such as animals or boats, and invite your children to look for art that incorporates that theme.

The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore

The Walters Art Museum began as a gift of two buildings, an endowment and the Walters family’s extensive art collection to the city of Baltimore. The museum continues to expand its collection to include art from around the world and from humankind’s ancient past through the modern day.

• Sculpture gardens are great places for children to stretch their legs and use outside voices.

The BMA is working toward restarting on-site art activities for families. For now, families can participate in Free Family Sundays at Home art projects and other virtual events in addition to visiting the museum in person. Admission is free.

Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center, Solomons Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center’s mission is to connect people with art and nature. Helping children make those connections is front and center at Annmarie. The sculpture garden features kid-friendly activities such as paths that invite you to walk (or hop) like various animals, tiny fairy houses for children to find, and a playground with kid-sized buildings for imaginative play. The sculpture garden’s art is all around children as they explore and discover. In the Arts Center building, you’ll find two floors of art gallery space. You’ll also find the artLAB inside the Arts Center. artLAb, a space where children, teens, and adults can transform ordinary items into art, is packed with art and craft supplies for all to use. Annmarie offers classes for children and families as well as special events and kid-themed festivals throughout the year. (Tip: Buy festival tickets early, as they typically sell out.) SNA card holders can buy festival tickets at a reduced rate; contact Annmarie for more information. As of this writing, Annmarie requires masks in the artLAB and during indoor Kids and Families classes.

The Art League of Ocean City Center for the Arts, Ocean City Whether you live in the Ocean City area or are vacationing there, stop by the Art League of Ocean City Center for the Arts to discover local artists’ work. Local artists-in-residence create and show their work in the Center’s Resident Artist Studios. Visitors can interact with the artists and learn how art is created. The Center sponsors several special events each year, including the Artists Paint OC plein air event, ArtX, and the Ocean City Film Festival. Admission to the Art Center is free.

The Walters offers free drop-in community art making sessions on Saturdays and Sundays. After exploring all or part of the museum, families can sit together to create art inspired by items they have viewed or take supplies home to use later.

Children will be drawn to the Chamber of Wonders, an eclectic collection of art, furnishings, taxidermy animals, and other fascinating objects; the Arms and Armor exhibit; and the Collector’s Study, which is designed to showcase art that the museum’s founders would have displayed in their private studies. Admission is free.

Tips for Visiting Art Museums with Children

There’s plenty to see inside the museum but be sure to save time to visit the sculpture gardens. These terraced green spaces feature modern and contemporary sculptures and offer places to sit and relax or sketch.

• Remind your children to respect rules concerning running on paths and touching the sculptures.

Five minutes from downtown Annapolis, Great Frogs Winery is a working vineyard producing a variety of red and white wines, Muscats and Rosés. Red wine drinkers will love the award-winning Meritage or Great Frogs Red, while white drinkers may enjoy the Vintners White or Great Frogs Chardonnay. Owners Nathanael and Andrea O’Shea pride themselves on their hands-on approach in this small vineyard that consistently attracts a crowd with its relaxed atmosphere and accessible tasting flights. Stroll the vines, play cornhole with friends, or simply relax in the indoor tasting room. The winery’s popular Friday night music series hosts local artists, with no cover charges and no reservations required. Great Frogs allows outside food to be brought in and enjoyed on their patio, and they also serve cheese and charcuterie platters that pairs perfectly with a tasting flight.

Known for their award-winning complex reds and crisp white wines, Boordy Vineyards has been producing wine since 1945. On Thursday evenings, the vineyard hosts a local farmers market where visitors can sip, shop and explore. Saturday evenings feature live music from local bands. Outside food and drink are not permitted, but the winery sells plenty of tasty fare, including cheese and charcuterie boards. Open daily, Boordy Vineyards offers public tours at 3pm daily and private tours by reservation that offer an in-depth look at the winemaking process, as well as a guided tasting paired with local cheese and charcuterie.

Located on eight acres in St. Leonard, Perigeaux Estate’s relaxed and pastoral atmosphere offers a casual spot to sip and unwind. The vineyard hosts local artists for live music every Saturday from 2-6pm and often partners with locally-produced Gypsy Brewery to offer a selection of microbrews as well. Tours are offered every Saturday and Sunday at 1pm and 3pm and visitors are allowed to bring it outside food and picnic on the property.

Located in Calvert County, Perigeaux Estate Vineyards is producing awardwinning Reisling, Montepulciano and Chardonnays, in addition to Cabernet Franc, Merlot and sweet Muscato.

Maryland’s first winery, Boordy Vineyards is located north of Baltimore and is one of the area’s most beautiful vineyards. With tastings held in a nineteenth-century barn, the charm and beauty of the vineyard’s vast acreage offers an unbeatable romantic setting for a date night.

On thirteen acres in Harwood, Thanksgiving Farm was the first commercial winery established in Anne Arundel County. The vineyard grows only Bordeaux varieties—Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all which are blended to produce the vineyard’s award-winning Meritage. All the wine at Thanksgiving Farm is aged in French oak barrels, lending complex layers to their handcrafted wines. With garden seating, a patio and small tasting room, Thanksgiving Farm offers a peaceful and pastoral setting just a few miles from Annapolis. Open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, the vineyard encourages reservations and allows visitors to bring picnics and outside food for their visit.
