EDITORIAL Here at Chew, we have a lot to be thankful for. We are truly thankful for our advertisers and for the wonderful reception we’ve had from our readers so far. And I bet you have a lot to be thankful for too. The real reason you live in Richmond is that you love Richmond. You and I love the fact that it’s so easy to pick on as well. Despite the oppressive environment surrounding the art/music/bar scene, we always manage to have a good time. Our city council gives us great scandalous gossip to keep us occupied and angst breeds inspiration. Where else can you live where the city is like a small town. Traffic could not be easier and chances are there’s always an empty bar stool within a few blocks radius. Most of all, we want to thank everyone who cares about making Richmond a better place. The ones who may complain about our city, but then find a solution by supporting the existing culture and adding to our future. Thanks. - JM

We would like to thank... WHAT WERE YOU SAYING? a look into the lyrics of our heros...

There’s a game you wanna play There’s a risk you would like to take But words can’t change what you feel inside There’ll be no going back from here I’m scared it’ll lead to tears Patience, boy, and I will decide If your kiss is sweet enough If I wanna feel your touch You should know I can read your mind If the deal is worth the pain If you just won’t die of shame I am tempted to try If you taste this fruit forbidden to eat You can drink this wine from a love so deep I dance for you Let you come within If you swear to me that it ain’t no sin There’s a world you wanna know There’s a place you wanna go Take your time and love will delight There’re wonders everywhere Their mysteries to share Be gentle, boy, and it will be alright

Can you name the band? And, what year did it come out? Win free stuff... If you know the answer email local@alocalmarket.com

last month’s song was “swingin” by low

I would like to give thanks for all the incredible friends I have here in RVA! They have never failed me or this band. It doesn’t seem to matter how many times we ask for help or even how big a favor we ask, somebody always steps up to deliver [and usually above and beyond what was requested]. The support has been nothing short of mind-blowing. I could go on for hours about all the other things I am thankful for but somehow they all seem to pale in comparison to the people who have helped us get to this point.

I am thankful for many things. First of all, I’m thankful that my family and I are in good health. I’m thankful for joy, and for being in a position (Broadcast Meteorologist) where I can spread that joy to others through my weather forecast. I’m thankful that, this year we only received one hurricane in central Virginia, and with all the widespread damage, not a lot of people were hurt. I am thankful for life and love, and the ability to service and worship freely. I’m thankful that the Philadelphia Eagles are getting back on track. There are so many things I’m thankful for...like my wife and kids for putting up with a dreamer like me.

BRANDY

I’m thankful for my South Side upbringing, motorcyles, and shotguns. I’m very, very thankful for my big bosoms and the non-cuddling, g-spot finding men.

ALISON OF TABOO

“I thank him for handcuffs and Hustler and make your own dildo. Phone sex and fetish and the hookers on Broad.”

Sex. Well what did you expect? It’s fun, it’s great exercise, it passes the time, and it makes me money. So every Thanksgiving when I sit down in front of my turkey and bow my head to thank the good lord for everything he’s provided, I never forget to give sex a mention. Sometimes I even get more specific with it, thanking him for certain sexual experiences, partners, or toys. For example, I thank him for the first person I had sex with. He was a great boyfriend and positive that he knew everything about sex since he had had it once before. He helped me out with comments such as “you’re moving around too much.” Good times. I thank him for the last person I had sex with. Nice sweaty heart-attack inducing sex before nice cuddly post-sex. I thank him for the platinum vibe. Solid metal, whisper quiet, and almost too powerful to handle. Almost. I thank him for that position where I’m on my back with my legs together over a boy’s shoulder. because, come on, that’s just good. i thank him for porn and for such heros and heroines as chloe, bobby vitale, and tera patrick. I thank him for strippers. God understands what a good beer, a good friend, and a good-looking naked girl dancing for dollars means to me. I thank him for Taboo. Spending my working hours helping soon to be cross-dressers pick out the perfect stockings is just part of the most rewarding career I could have chosen. I thank him for handcuffs and Hustler and Make Your Own Dildo. Phone sex and fetish and the hookers on broad. And finally, I thank him for the orgasm. Remember sex when you say your prayers this Thanksgiving. Let god know you appreciate it as much as you do. And then after your dinner, go have some. He’ll appreciate that extra effort to prove your sincerity and you’ll enjoy it too. Just remember to be thankful for condoms.

I awake each morning thankful to be alive...thankful that I am healthy (as far as I know) and thankful for my family. I am thankful for the people with whom I work, and that our efforts have been so well received in Richmond. It is the luck of the draw, no doubt, because I know of no reason that I am entitled to any of this good fortune. I am also keenly aware that it can all change on a moments notice, or perhaps with no notice at all. Each year when Thanksgiving comes we are so fortunate to have good times together and perhaps we, more than most, are aware of the many who do not have much to be thankful for. They are on our news every day. I hope that if my life changes for the worse, and there are no guarantees that it won’t, I will have the grace to accept it and remain thankful for all the good years that went before. If God blesses some more than others (and that is more a matter of philosophy than fact) then I have been the beneficiary of exceeding mercy. So there!

“I am thankful for the people with whom I work, and that our efforts have been so well received in Richmond.

“I’m most grateful that I eat food on a regular basis and that I have a decent band to play with.”

ON JAS ON AND

OF JAS NS THE VACATIO

For over 2 years people have been going to Out Of Bounds every Thursday night to listen to this Elvis Costello / David Bowie inspired musician play through the clanging of glasses and plates. Jason, one of the former members of SuperComp, can be seen solo with nothing but a microphone and an acoustic guitar, or with his new band Jason and the Vacations, on any given night of the week. Raised by a music-teaching mother and a guitar strumming father, it was inevitable that this very talented young man would find solace through music. “I just picked up the guitar one day and started playing,“ remembers Jason. By age sixteen note and chord exploration became a serious devotion to the craft totally self taught. “I’m most grateful that I eat food on a regular basis and that I have a decent band to play with.” Unfortunately, as funny as that might sound, thousands of musicians give up music because meals become less frequent the more they pursue their career. Luckily for Jason there are enough people who recognize his talent and reward him with paying gigs.

“The sauce was my way to cope with the trials and tribulations of youth.”

Harold, owner of the Corner Café and founder of the The Heat Seekers, a club for hot sauce lovers. By joining the club you get one bottle of imported hot sauce a month and a “We Seek The Heat” tee shirt with the logo. Plus, they meet every month at the Corner Café to cleanse their palates with peppers instead of wine. I am thankful for this club, it shows my love for the spicy side of life. Richmond has a lot of people who share this feeling.

I am thankful for just being Harold and being allowed to be doing the things that I enjoy. No one could do what I do alone, so I am very thankful for the people around me, you know who you are. Also, I am thankful for my wife Dee, who lets me be me, thanks pumpkin.

“I’m most thankful that Richmond has the ability to surprise me all the time.” Don Harrison I’m thankful that so many people have responded and signed our ‘open letter’. They’ve put their names on the line in the hopes that things can somehow get better around here. It’s easy to be cynical and to disengage yourself from your community in a quest to be ‘cool’. It’s much harder to stand up and fight for a larger purpose and to do it in a positive way that tries to engage others. Andrew Beaujon I’m thankful for Brunswick stew, Roy’s Big Burgers, Hanover tomatoes, and Buzz and Ned’s. I’m thankful for people like Don Harrison and my wife, Ewa, who’ve given most of their spare time since this past June to try and help the local music scene just because they care. I’m thankful for free Wi-Fi at RIC and Duckpin bowling at Plaza. And finally, I’m thankful I live in a town where Jimmy Blackford is a pillar of the community. Eva Beaujon I’m most thankful that Richmond has the ability to surprise me all the time. From the incredible buildings I’ve never noticed before, to the great bars and restaurants, to the galleries, to the neat events and creative people who are working to bring out the best in this city. Thank you.

“I am most grateful for life, love, libido, and ability to finally relate with others through my words.”

Connecticut is the hometown for this Chew writer and photographer. After living in Los Angeles, South Florida, and studying in Brasil and Belize, she has found a comfort zone in Richmond. “As young as I can remember I never quite fit in,” recalls Rebekah. “My parents always referred to me as the little dancer because my approach to life and wardrobe never quite fit the norm of society.” Although being raised in an artistic home was familiar to her, Rebekah had a hard time meeting others that she could relate to. She attended a magnet school for high school, where she majored in the arts, both fine and performance, and was finally able to express herself freely without and without hesitation. “I remember my first kiss. My first boyfriend was in eighth grade. I didn’t have another boyfriend until I was 19,” chuckles Rebekah who now writes a monthly column on sex and dating. “In college I finally grew breasts and my face discovered homeostasis with my exaggerated lips and eyes. Boys eventually noticed something that I hadn’t ever noticed before.” She began taking writing classes from incredible professors and sex lessons from less incredible suiters around the same time. “I just love being able to find the humor in this strange and often awkward ritual of dating. There are a thousands things she is grateful for, but for Rebekah, when it comes to life right now, “I am most grateful for life, love, libido, and ability to finally relate with others through my words.”

- Rebekah Trachtenburg, Sex and the Sexes Columnist

I am thankful for jobless beer enthusiasts, my copy of fletch, prank calls, late night cinemax, lottery lines at 7-11, smart alecks, sweet valley high novels, the cougar, bettin’ your sweet ass, and being every girls worst nightmare. I am thankful for an overrated sense of humor, a modicum of hopeless romanticism. I am also thankful for my winning smile and cheese...and crazy bitches.

WADI “I am just grateful to have had the opportunity to contribute to my own city.” Wadi (wad’.i.) n. any channel, river, or stream that only exists for a certain period of time during intense rainfall. Finally, a definition for a rather undefinable publication. The man behind the newsprint is Matthew Hunter, a 24 year old Minnesota born civil libertarian. Matt, who describes himself as the “all purpose cleaner” at Wadi does a little bit of everything to ensure that the paper hits the readers hands twice a month. As a hopeful creative writing/ English graduate from VCU, pending a credit dispute, Matt created Wadi to provide Richmond with an alternative to The Times-Dispatch and Style Weekly. Within two weeks of conception, the first issue was delivered. The publication has come a tremendous way from April 15th, 2003. The layout and design is stronger, and after downsizing from a staff of 57 to 10, the writing and organization improved as well. Unfortunately, according to a press release dated Monday October 20th, 2003 Wadi is ceasing its distribution. People from Charlottesville to Richmond to Virginia Beach will be unable to pick up a Wadi anywhere. If the magazine accrued no debt, the staff was reliable and efficient, and advertising was flourishing, why no more Wadi? Matt’s only response is, “I am just grateful to have had the opportunity to contribute to my own city.”

- Matt Hunter, 24, owner of Wadi

Playas Advice I desperately want my friend’s girlfriend. It’s not that I am looking for a relationship, just a discreet hook-up. I think she has been flirting with me and I want it so bad. -No Relief in Richmond (a) Love is a four-letter word. Chicks do not dig this coming from a guy that they’re not already bent into knots about. Getting that word out of you should be a battle for her, and it’s the battle that holds her interest. If you say the four letter word, then she’s won without even fighting, and you’re a sissy pushover, and she’s on to the next challenge. You’re in the power seat because you’re forbidden fruit. (b) If you tell her she’s beautiful, you should frame it in a subtle way, and make the comment that you want to tell her this, but you’re sure she hears it from her boyfriend all the time. (c) If you make moves around the boyfriend, be prepared for a rabbit punch, and/or making a scene which will disturb her. A true girlfriend stealer is a fisherman... put out the bait, and lure them in. If you force the matter in front of the boyfriend, it’s an all or nothing ploy, and she may not like it. Lure her into making the choices that you want, don’t push her into things. -The Playa

I am proud of the fact that the City’s financial health has improved during my time on the Council. I have been fortunate enough to serve at a time of huge economic growth and development. The City is experiencing a rebirth economically, and I have enjoyed participating in that. I am excited about the developments on the waterfront. I believe that in the long term, the economic vitality of the downtown area is connected to how we exploit this resource. The river and its beauty in many ways sells itself. The Brown’s Island project has great promise for additional office, residential and retail space. More and more people are moving back to the City, it is an exciting time.

I am thankful for all of the paranormal encounters I have been fortunate enough to experience. This is what first made me start researching the paranormal. As a result of my experiences as a child I began to question everything and look at the world in a different light.
