When Geri Harston was in grammar school, she would watch the electricians install lights on the streets. She looked at it and believed it was something she could do. She had an opportunity to sign up for the journeyman apprenticeship program. She went through the program and worked in the field for 11 years then was called back to teach at the apprenticeship program.

Thousands of Runners Will Race Through Lakeview and Onto the Warning Track at Wrigley Field

CHICAGO—On Saturday, September 30, Cubs Charities will host the 18th Annual Race to Wrigley 5K Charity Run starting at 8 a.m. with participants running through the Lakeview neighborhood and onto the Wrigley Field warning track before finishing steps away from the iconic Wrigley Field Marquee.

Proceeds from the race will benefit Cubs Charities and their mission to mobilize the power of sport to champion youth, families and communities through sports-based youth development and academic programming, investments in safe places to play and strategic grantmaking. Proceeds from personal fundraising will be donated specifically to children and adolescents in need of behavioral health care services at Advocate Children’s Hospital.

In-person registration is open and will close on Friday, September 29, at noon CDT or until registration reaches full capacity. Virtual registration will close Sunday, October 1, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. CDT. Fans interested in participating can register at www. racetowrigley.com.

The Black Professional Entrepreneurs Resurgence® Program is looking for Chicago-based entrepreneurs in the growth stage of business to join its Chicago cohort. The program has impacted more than 1,200 entrepreneurs in the Houston area before heading to the Windy City.

MCA CHICAGO ANNOUNCES NEW EXHIBITION

FAITH RINGGOLD: AMERICAN PEOPLE

CHICAGO—The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago is pleased to announce Faith Ringgold: American People, a career-spanning survey of artist Faith Ringgold (b. 1930, Harlem, NY; lives and works in Englewood, New Jersey), opening in the Griffin Galleries of Contemporary Art on November 18, 2023, and running through February 25, 2024. This exhibition will be Ringgold’s first solo presentation in Chicago.

With a career that spans six decades, artist, author, educator, and organizer Ringgold is one of the most influential cultural figures of her generation. This major retrospective presents a comprehensive assessment of the artist’s impactful vision, which bears witness to the complexity of the American experience.

The exhibition will also further contextualize Ringgold’s continuing impact on art history through the inclusion of works from the MCA Collection by artists who were influenced by Ringgold or explore similar themes in their work.

“I just love the industry, I love the work, I love seeing what I do matter and just seeing the results of my work every day as you drive through the city,” she said.

Harston is the Project Coordinator for Taylor Electric Co. and a former IBEW Local 134 Journeyman. Taylor Electric Co. is Black-owned, family-owned, and was founded in 1922. Harston has been tasked with expanding the company’s service and maintenance department.

Harston recently graduated from the 2023 ComEd Energy Efficiency Service Provider (EESP) Incubator Program. She found it very helpful because it helped Taylor Electric Co. with networking and allowed them to learn about the ComEd incentives, which they will pass on to their customers.

Taylor Electric Co. was one of 27 businesses that participated in this year’s ComEd’s Energy Efficiency Service Provider (EESP) Incubator Program. The program was created in 2019. The goal of the program is to support the development of diverse contractors, while offering them training and education on ComEd’s Energy Efficiency Program offerings.

The program is geared toward minority-owned, women-owned and veteran-owned businesses. Participants in the program received one-on-one assistance with certification applications, building relationships with project financing lenders and creating business growth plans. They also received support in identifying, addressing and resolving barriers to developing a successful business in the energy efficiency industry.

Harston was assigned Merrick Trossman, owner of Windy City Lighting, as a mentor. He gave her a good plan of attack to service Taylor Electric Co.’s current customers. That insight from him was an encouragement that she could offer Taylor’s customer the same incentives.

“It was great because he knew where we were coming from, even though our company is a lot larger than his. Knowing that in the future that we can possibly do some work together, it was encouraging,” Harston said.

Harston is trying to expand Taylor’s service and maintenance department to have more diverse funding coming into the company, as well as the desire to offer the customers a lot more precise services and energy efficiencies. Taylor Electric Co. is retrofitting lightings and installing electric vehicle chargers around the city.

Harston was grateful for the opportunity to go through the ComEd Energy Efficiency Service Provider (EESP) Incubator Program. She encourages other minority and women-owned businesses in the energy field to participate.

“I think it’s very helpful, not only for business growth, but also to serve the communities that we are in. Because we are a minority business, we can offer these types of incentives to our own community,” Harston said.

Guarneri Hall presents Reflections: Voices of the Underrepresented

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The nonprofit Guarneri Hall, a custom-built classical music venue in the heart of downtown Chicago at 11 E. Adams St.), continues its 5th Anniversary Season Tuesday, October 3 at 6:30 p.m. with Reflections: Voices of the Underrepresented featuring internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Chrystal E. Williams and pianist Natalia Kazaryan. This uniquely curated program celebrates art songs created by artists of color and female artists underrepresented in music history.

The evening will feature a progressive integration of thematic content and musical texture, including American composer and baritone H.T. Burleigh’s Five Songs of Laurence Hope; Trois Mélodies by 19th-century French mezzo-soprano, composer and pedagogue Pauline Viardot; a pairing of Troubled Water and The Negro Speaks of Rivers by Chicago’s own Margaret Bonds with original text by Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes; as well as spirituals by Margaret Bonds, Chicago based music educator and composer Rev. Dr. Lena J. McLin, and Undine Smith Moore known

as “the Dean of Black Women Composers.”

A Q&A with the artists will follow the performance and allow audience members to interact directly with the musicians. The Strong Communities Program is designed to support local revitalization efforts and attract further investment in communities that may lack the resources needed to tackle vacant, abandoned and deteriorated properties.

A total of $19 million was approved by IHDA to support these revitalization efforts across Illinois. The grants are funded by the Rebuild Illinois capital plan and will leverage IHDA’s existing funding to increase property values, create jobs, help reduce crime, generate additional tax revenue and attract further community investment in underserved communities around the state. The following communities in the district Joyce represents are set to receive funding:

· Kankakee County: $487,000

“Vacant and abandoned properties continue to be a strain on local budgets and resources in communities throughout Illinois, which is why IHDA created the Strong Communities Program to assist local governments with their neighborhood revitalization efforts,” IHDA Executive Director Kristin Faust said. “Through the Strong Communities Program, IHDA seeks to help communities transform these properties back into positive, revenue-generating assets for neighborhoods.”

HARRIS PLEASED TO SEE MORE THAN $850,000 IN LOCAL BACK TO BUSINESS GRANTS

HARVEY – Restaurants and hotels in the 15th District are set to receive more than $850,000 in grants, thanks to the support of State Senator Napoleon Harris, III.

“Our businesses and hotels drive our local economy,” said Harris (D-Harvey). “We are all still in the process of recovering from the pandemic. The Back to Business grant program is an effective way for us to uplift and support our business community as they rebuild and recover.”

The Back to Business grant program provides recovery grants for small businesses throughout the state with an emphasis on businesses in the hardest-hit industries, like restaurants and hotels. Through the Back to Business and Business Interruption Grant programs, DCEO has provided more than $535 million to more than 15,000 businesses since the start of the pandemic.

A total of $851,713 has been awarded to 23 businesses in Harris’ district that are part of the restaurant and hotel industry.

“As a business owner, I can empathize with the challenges our community is still struggling with,” said Harris. “My hope is this grant program will assist businesses and help ensure they are on a path toward success.”

Calumet City flooding statement

With more than six inches of rain falling on Calumet City and neighboring south suburban communities, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) urges continued collaboration, investment and attention to stormwater management and infrastructure.

Few local sewers have capacity to handle these rain totals and convey this flow to the MWRD’s intercepting sewers and Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) infrastructure. The MWRD’s Thornton Composite Reservoir, which is part of TARP and serves Chicago south of 87th Street and 13 south suburban communities, including Calumet City, was only at 15 percent capacity after the weekend rainstorm. This means that despite the heavy rains, most of the flow was not reaching the reservoir.

“It is imperative that we work together to continue to find ways to improve Cook County local community’s stormwater systems,” said MWRD President Kari K. Steele. “The MWRD works around the clock to manage excess water coming from communities within

our 882-square-mile service area. I encourage local officials to reach out to my office to discuss stormwater improvement opportunities with green infrastructure. Together we accomplish more.”

The TARP system continues to maintain capacity and operate as designed. Since becoming operational in 2015, the Thornton Reservoir has captured more than 53 billion gallons of combined sewage. This is water that would otherwise be discharged to the waterways or flood basements.

Through the MWRD’s Stormwater Management Program, the MWRD has partnered or is partnering with several south suburban communities on green infrastructure and other stormwater management projects to help alleviate flooding. The MWRD has also distributed more than 2,000 free rain barrels to Calumet City and Dolton residents.

The MWRD has also worked with these communities through its Watershed Planning Councils, which exist to provide a forum for municipalities to learn about available resources. Meeting locations and dates are listed on the MWRD’s website at mwrd.org/ watershed-planning-council-meetings-1.

Harper Law Steps Up State’s Response to SNAP Theft

CHICAGO – State Rep. Sonya M. Harper, D-Chicago, is promoting a stepped-up response to the pervasive and growing issue of SNAP theft by passing a new law which will require the state agency in charge of the SNAP program to collect data on SNAP theft and to create reports to enable the General Assembly to better craft effective legislation around the problem.

“The theft of SNAP benefits is a serious problem that, cruelly, impacts some of our most vulnerable people and families,” Harper said. “When you need your benefits to afford adequate nutrition for yourself and your family, the loss of those benefits can be catastrophic. That’s why it’s critical that lawmakers have the best possible information about this problem, so we can act to put an end to it.”

Food stamps are typically issued to recipients using a debit-card system. Thieves have become adept at using devices called “skimmers” to steal recipients’ SNAP account information, either by hiding the skimmer into payment machines or by swiping it near a victim’s pocket

or purse.

Harper’s House Bill 2214 requires the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) to track and collect data on the theft of SNAP benefits, which are also known as “food stamps,” and, beginning in 2024, report its findings to the General Assembly every three months.

Harper’s original bill would have required IDHS to replace stolen SNAP funds, but this provision was removed by a Senate amendment. The final bill was unanimously passed by both House and Senate and has been signed into law by Gov. J.B. Pritzker. It goes into effect Jan. 1, 2024.

“As I’ve said before, we’ll have to do more going forward in terms of making victims of SNAP theft whole again, but this legislation does represent a positive first step in solving this critical problem,” Harper said. “With better access to more comprehensive information about the problem, my colleagues and I can work to craft more effective legislation targeting SNAP theft and, hopefully, to bring this problem to an end.”

Secretaries of Education, Agriculture Call on Governors to Equitably Fund Land-Grant HBCUs

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack sent letters to 16 governors emphasizing the over $12 billion disparity in funding between land-grant Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and their non-HBCU land-grant peers in their states. There are HBCU land-grant institutions in 18 states; however, Delaware and Ohio have equitably funded their respective universities.

The Biden-Harris Administration is proud to have made record investments in our HBCUs, but to compete in the 21st century we need state leaders to step up and live up to their legally required obligations to our historically Black land-grant institutions.”

Failing to do so will have severe and lasting consequences to the agriculture and food industry at a time when it must remain resilient and competitive.”

Under the Second Morrill Act of 1890, states choosing to open a second land-grant university to serve Black students were required to provide an eq-

uitable distribution of state funds between their 1862 and 1890 land-grant institutions. 1862 land-grant universities were founded through the First Morrill Act of 1862 which provided states with federal land that could be sold to support the colleges.

Using data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Integrated Postsecondary Education Survey (IPEDS) that ranges from 1987 to 2020, the departments were able to calculate the amount that these institutions would have received if their state funding per student was equal to that of 1862 institutions. Unequitable appropriated funding of the 1890 institutions in the states ranges from $172 million to $2.1 billion, causing severe financial gaps. In the last 30 years alone, these funds could have supported vital and much-needed infrastructure and student services and would have better positioned the recipient universities to compete for grants to increase educational opportunity for students.

Noting that it is more important than ever to compete at a high level and remain the world’s top producer of talent and innovation, the Departments of Education and Agriculture have offered to work with each state’s budget office to examine the funding data to bring balance to investments in 1890 HBCUs that have been severely underfunded.

Each letter outlined the amount each state’s 1890 HBCU has been underfunded per student in state appropriated funds between 1987 and 2020 and offers a suggestion on possible remedies. To view the letters, click here.

The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation Launches ‘Outdoors for Everyone’

SHORT HILLS, N.J., PRNewswire -- In observance of Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation launched the ‘Outdoors for Everyone Campaign,’ an initiative to ensure the great outdoors is equally accessible and inclusive for all people – including those living with paralysis, their families, and caregivers.

While the beauty of nature is a universal right, the great outdoors and accessibility are oftentimes in conflict. The Reeve Foundation is working closely with parks and outdoor-based organizations, outdoor experts and people living with paralysis to provide and inform resources, tools and guiding factors surrounding real-life challenges wheelchair-users face in nature and ways to solve these issues.

As part of this initiative, the Reeve Foundation’s highly trained Information Specialists are educating those in the paralysis community about accessible parks, what to look for, and how to prepare for their journey into nature. The Foundation’s Information Specialists are dedicated to helping anyone, from newly paralyzed individuals and their family members to persons who have lived with paralysis and mobility impairments long-term.

Alongside the Information Specialists and outdoor-based organizations, the Reeve Foundation has also created an ‘Accessible Outdoor Checklist’ for parks,

By working with parks and outdoor recreational organizations on ways to improve accessibility outdoors, we hope this will encourage those in the community and their caregivers to spend more time in nature.”

Youth Suicide Risk Due to Overdose Rises During School Year

CHICAGO – Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States, and the 3rd leading cause of death among youth ages 10-19 in Illinois. September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. With the school year underway for Illinois students, the Illinois Poison Center (IPC) is offering tips to teachers, parents, and caregivers to help prevent suicide attempts.

“Suicide attempts by overdose rise during the back-to-school period and throughout the school year,” said IPC Medical Director Michael Wahl, M.D. “For some students, going back to school appears to trigger stress and anxiety, making it even more important that teachers, parents and caregivers are on the lookout for behavioral changes.”

According to the latest Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) data, 186 Illinois youth and young adults died by suicide in 2022; over 9% of these deaths were from intentional self-poisonings.

A 2023 study published in the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report examined trends in suspected suicide attempts by self-poisoning among persons aged 10-19 before and during the pandemic. Data showed that the rate of suspected suicide attempts by self-poisoning among persons aged 10 - 19 years increased 30% in 2021 as compared with pre-pandemic rates (2019), with a 73% increase among children aged 10 - 12 years. Approximately 49% were among adolescents aged 13 - 15 years, and 37% among females. Middle school and the first two

years of high school showed the largest increases in suicide attempts reported to poison centers.

Studies also show that suicidal overdose attempts in children and teenagers increase while school is in session. A study published in Clinical Toxicology concluded there was a significant increase in the number of suicide attempts by self-poisoning cases in age groups of 10-18 years during the traditional school months of September-May compared with June-August.

“Back to school is an exciting time for many students, but peer pressure, bullying, and academic expectations can lead to symptoms of depression or anxiety,” said IPC Assistant Vice President Carol DesLauriers, Pharm.D. “IPC is here to help and encourages you to access the resources available to keep the loved ones in your life happy and healthy.”

As suicide continues to be a growing public health problem, IPC is sharing the following resources to help prevent suicide and how to look for warning signs:

Take all threats seriously. Signs that children and adolescents may be thinking of suicide could include sadness (with or without crying), anxiety, lack of energy and/or motivation, temper outbursts and/ or violent episode, withdrawal from friends and family, skipping school or classes, increased use of drugs and/or alcohol, comments about death or dying, or even threatening suicide. A list of warning signs can be found here.

Call 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for 24/7, free and confidential support for anyone experiencing thoughts of suicide or experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis, including family, friends, and/or caregivers. Callers will receive specialized, individualized support from certified crisis workers trained in suicide prevention, de-escalation and stabilization, and resources. To specifically address the suicide crisis among young people, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued recommendations in 2022 for pediatric health providers to screen everyone ages 12 and older for suicide risk at least once a year.

IPC’s toxicology specialists provided consultations to hospital staff for almost 12,000 suicidal overdoses (all ages) in 2022. IPC staff serve as toxicology consultants to Illinois healthcare professionals, whose inquiries represent nearly one-third of yearly poisoning cases reported to IPC. Calls to the IPC helpline (1-800-222-1222) are free and confidential. IPC experts are available to provide information and treatment advice 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, including holidays.

Teach Kids Kindness and Gratitude With Thank You Notes

(StatePoint) Nearly 60% of Americans say they send thank you notes at least occasionally to show their appreciation for a gift or favor, according to a recent poll from AmericanGreetings.com.
