“I was raised on music mostly that had a sense of soul and a lot of personality in it,” he said.
Wilkes gravitated to music, because it touched him. As he got older, he tried to play the keyboard and guitar and eventually, he found the trumpet. He took to it immediately, because of his exposure to live music. Wilkes went to Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he said his involvement in music really took off. He never looked back. He started working professionally, recording and touring with groups.
Wilkes is featured in the Flyover Experience Believe Chicago and Legendary Iceland. The immersive attraction takes visitors on a journey through Chicago, with sights and sounds, as well as smells and multisensory special effects. The immersive attraction also features the Soul Children of Chicago.
Wilkes became involved with the Flyover because of his connection with the Music Union of Chicago. Wilkes said the immersive experience is different than anything else he’s ever done. Usually, as a musician, he’s in a studio, which is a controlled environment.
“We were dealing with the elements. We’re on top of a building,” he said.
of drone most people see or use. He said even the sound from the drone was intense. Wilkes said he was amazed by the finished product. Even though he was able to see it before it came out, it was amazing for him to see it in person.
In the Flyover Chicago, Wilkes is playing the trumpet atop the Tribune Tower building in Downtown Chicago. He said he had a tight grip on the trumpet, as he stood on a platform and mimed to the track that was playing. He said the drone used to film was more like a mini jet than the kind
“You still don’t get the feeling that you get when you’re in the immersive experience, it engages all of your senses. You’re not just sitting down watching a film,” he said.
Prior to appearing in the Flyover, Wilkes worked on “Empire” for six seasons, on and off screen, “The Playboy Club” and “The Chi.”
Wilkes recently returned from a 30day stint on tour. For the last 20 years, he has been working with the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, an avant garde ensemble, which has been touring all over the East Coast.
Next up for Wilkes is the release of his album, Soundculture, on Spirit Muse Records. He is currently finishing that up, with an anticipated release in September of this year.
Soundculture includes a collaboration of the groups he is involved with and the music that has influenced him. He said he has been able to collaborate with a lot of great Chicago artists, who will be featured on the album. Wilkes will also be part of Tuesdays on the Terrace at the Museum of Contemporary Art in August.

As a result of the unprecedented demand for REAL ID services, the Illinois Secretary of State’s office announced its Chinatown DMV will transition from accepting walk-ins to an appointment-only model to better serve customers and protect public safety.
The facility, located at 2250 S. Canal St. in Chicago, will serve customers with appointments from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Illinoisans can make an appointment for a visit to the Chinatown facility at www.ilsos.gov.
“After personally visiting this facility today and witnessing the dangerously long lines, mainly due to REAL ID confusion and misinformation, we’ve made the decision to switch our Chinatown facility to an appointment-only DMV. Our Chinatown DMV is our smallest facility in the Chicago area, and an appointment-based system will better protect and serve our customers. We will continue our efforts to inform the public on whether or not they need a REAL ID.”
Earlier this week, the office introduced a new designated “Get A REAL ID” portal
on the homepage of its website – www. ilsos.gov – so Illinoisans can determine: 1) if they need a REAL ID before the May 7 federal enforcement period begins; and 2) how to find a walk-in location or schedule an appointment near them.
The office has also announced new Saturday hours at 12 DMV facilities exclusively for REAL ID services and expanded Saturday hours at six DMVs beginning March 1 through May 10.
The ‘REAL ID Saturday’ facilities that will accommodate exclusively REAL ID requests will be open on Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Chicago West (5301 W. Lexington Ave.) and the following suburban facilities: Addison, Aurora, Des Plaines, Elgin, Joliet, Lake Zurich, Melrose Park, Plano, St. Charles, Waukegan and Woodstock.
In addition, six DMV appointment-only locations currently open on Saturdays will expand their operations for an additional five hours from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Chicago North (5401 N. Elston Ave.), Deerfield, Lombard, Naperville, Schaumburg and Springfield (Wabash Avenue). Appointments at these facilities must be made in advance.

“We are overjoyed to be working with Bob and Nick on What they said,” shares Arts of Life Co-Founder and Executive Director Denny Fisher. “For 25 years, Arts of Life has worked to support the careers of our artists with disabilities. Collaborating with internationally recognized artists like Bob and Nick plays an essential role in increasing our artists’ opportunities for professional development and increased visibility.”
Prolific artist and designer Bob Faust was inspired by the formal qualities of Arts of Life artists’ recent work. Faust said, “For What they said, Nick and I are making artwork selections based on the feelings that come up when we experience them. Whether it’s a clash of color, build-up of material or an intensity coming through repetitive mark-making, each has a way of getting under the skin.”
Nick Cave (b. 1959, Fulton, MO; lives and works in Chicago, IL) is an artist, educator and foremost a messenger, working between the visual and performing arts through a wide range of mediums including sculpture, installation, video, sound and performance. Cave is well known for his Soundsuits, sculptural forms based on the scale of his body, initially created in direct response to the police beating of Rodney King in 1991. Soundsuits camouflage the body, masking and creating a second skin that conceals race, gender and class, forcing the viewer to look without judgment. They serve as a visual embodiment of social justice that represent both brutality and empowerment.
Arts of Life advances the creative arts community by providing artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities a collective space to expand their practice and strengthen their leadership.

allows for more informed student investors empowered with the necessary skills to create and sustain wealth.”
The expansion of SIP follows the first year of programming in 2023, which was made possible through a partnership between SFI, Stackwell, and Prudential Financial. The program’s initial cohort achieved promising results as noted by the Financial Health Network, a nonprofit and leading voice on financial health serving as an impact evaluator, in the recently released study: “Closing the Racial Wealth Gap With Financial Asset Ownership.”
This expansion is made possible due to new philanthropic grants from The Prudential Foundation, The Institute for Consumer Money Management, and other philanthropic sponsors totaling $1.65M of funding for the program. This groundbreaking initiative is aimed at helping students attending Minority Serving Institutions, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), within SFI’s network. The program will provide opportunities for students to gain critical financial education and investment skills, empowering them to overcome traditional barriers to investing and build a foundation for long-term financial security.
“Stackwell’s work is an essential part of addressing the financial challenges faced by our students,” said Keith B. Shoates, President and CEO of Student Freedom Initiative. “Our partnership is a powerful example of how we can leverage technology and philanthropy to build sustainable and scalable financial futures. The impact of the Student Investment Program is clear: increased financial education
Of the students who were evaluated in this study, there was a 167% increase in students reporting high levels of knowledge about investing, comfort with investing increased by 88%, confidence in reaching longterm financial goals increased by 63%, and 99% of participating students who began investing on the Stackwell platform remain in the markets. Additionally, the program had an even greater impact on women participants, who reported a 127% increase in feeling like investing was for them, a 257% increase in comfort with investment decisions, and a 338% increase in high-level investing knowledge.
“We are excited to expand the Student Investment Program to reach even more students, equipping them with the tools they need to succeed financially,” said Trevor Rozier-Byrd, Founder and CEO of Stackwell. “Through SIP, we are breaking down barriers to wealth, equity, economic mobility, and our shared prosperity with increased stock market investment and enhanced financial wellness education. We could not be prouder of the outcomes we share today, and the work we will continue to do alongside SFI and their funding partners.”
The SIP is part of SFI and Stackwell’s broader strategies to close the wealth gap and build a foundation of financial independence within underrepresented communities. Like SFI, through data-driven initiatives and a commitment to increasing financial wellness, Stackwell
is pioneering efforts to ensure that the next generation of investors from these communities are more financially educated and empowered to succeed.
With additional support, SFl and Stackwell are eager to continue the SIP expansion. To learn more about becoming a SIP funding partner, please contact SFI at sip@studentfreedominitiative.org or Stackwell at partnerships@stackwellcapital.com.
A single purpose nonprofit organization, Student Freedom Initiative aims to reduce the wealth gap through the lens of education. Initially focused on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Student Freedom Initiative enables mobility through four transformational components: (1) Student Freedom Fund as a private education loan alternative to Parent PLUS loans, (2) Internships and industry-driven certifications, (3) Comprehensive Supports, and (4) Institutional Transformation (e.g., access to affordable broadband, strengthening endowment governance and risk adjusted returns, workforce development in clean energy and living spaces). NEW YORK, PRNewswire -- Inspired by the sundrenched glamour and glitz of a luxury resort vacation, H&M debuts a new womenswear collection inspired by the HBO® Original Series The White Lotus. The collection was made in collaboration with Alex Bovaird, Costume Designer of the series, and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products.
Full of vivid colors, dynamic prints, and powerful silhouettes, the 25-piece resort-themed collection draws from the carefully curated vacation wardrobes of season three’s cast. Blended with a cinematic mood, the eye-catching collection is designed to be layered and adapted for relaxed poolside days and summer nights.
“The White Lotus collection taps into a real cultural moment – it also meant we could create a glamorous and dreamy resort collection. I believe that as a person, you are more daring on vacation; you can have a different persona, and you communicate that in the way you dress. There’s that versatility, too, so you can pack light. It works for the beach, but you can easily style it for the evening if you want to. It’s the perfect summer vacation wardrobe,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, Creative Advisor at H&M.
The collection boasts something for every moment and mood. Key pieces include 1960s-influenced babydoll dresses, boho crochet sets, and short-and-sweet lace looks to romantic long dresses and cover-ups. A long, billowing, high-neck burgundy dress with ruffles capture the high-drama spirit of the collection alongside an orange kaftan and black-and-white halter-neck dress with a flounced hem.
An array of accessories are featured in the vacation inspired collection including woven hats, tote bags and necklaces. The collection also includes swimwear, sunglasses, and slides evoking a high-summer look.
“I loved working with the team at H&M on the designs for the collection. We always have this little catchphrase on the show: ‘Nothing’s too much for The White Lotus!’ So, I’m drawn more to the bold patterns and the more sumptuous, billowing pieces. I love that the collection can be worn all day – something you could just throw on to go to breakfast or the pool, or you could add jewellery and wear it to dinner. There’s something for everyone. The collection incorporates the jungle, the show’s bright iconic colours, and some gold and glitz that signify a stylish and luxurious resort vacation,” says Alex Bovaird, Costume Designer of The White Lotus.

New York, NY -- Internationally renowned equestrian jeweler Karina Brez introduces new additions to her iconic Lucky Horseshoe Collection, a tribute to the enduring spirit of the horse and the power of luck. Drawing inspiration from equestrian culture, a lifestyle that blends freedom and grace, these new horseshoe designs reflect the deep connection between rider and horse while embodying Western fashion, a style that continues to captivate pop culture and the world.
For centuries, the beloved horseshoe has been a symbol of protection and good fortune. Karina Brez reinterprets this emblem in a collection that blends luxury with meaning, offering handcrafted jewels designed to celebrate the power, resilience, and confidence of those who wear them. Whether in 18K yellow, white or rose gold, adorned with diamonds, or featuring high-quality colored gemstones, each new addition to the Lucky Horseshoe Collection captures the essence of equestrian heritage, transformed into wearable art.
As the world embraces Western-inspired fashion with enthusiasm, cowgirl culture is no longer just a nostalgic nod to the past—it’s a movement. The modern cowgirl represents independence, fearlessness, and a deep appreciation for the land and the animals she cherishes. From the rodeo to the runway, equestrian influences have taken center stage, making bold belt buckles, cowboy boots, and horseshoe motifs a defining trend in high fashion. More than ever, women are embracing the carefree yet powerful symbolism of the cowgirl, reclaiming feminine strength through rugged, yet refined style. The Lucky Horseshoe Collection reflects this shift, celebrating both the beauty and the boldness of the modern woman, whether she’s in the saddle or stepping into a boardroom.
“I have always believed that jewelry should tell a story, carry meaning, and inspire confidence,” says Karina Brez, whose deep connection to the equestrian world informs every piece she designs. “The horseshoe is a symbol that
has been passed down for centuries, carrying with it luck, protection, and resilience. As Cowgirl culture continues to influence luxury jewelry, I wanted to create pieces that honor this heritage while remaining timeless for today’s women.”
Among the highlights is the Pearl and Diamond Horseshoe Necklace, a piece that blends femininity with powerful symbolism. The luminous pearls add a touch of softness, while diamonds enhance the brilliance of the horseshoe motif, making it a perfect standalone statement or an elegant layering piece. The Turquoise and Diamond Horseshoe Necklace is another standout design, with 0.43 ct. of shimmering diamonds surrounding 0.99 ct. of round turquoise cabochons in a horseshoe shape—an eye-catching jewel for on and off the track. Brez’s Mini Plain Horseshoe Necklace, Ring, and Earrings offer a subtle nod to luck, with their understated gold silhouette serving as a versatile staple for any jewelry collection.
For those who prefer bolder statements, the Large Sapphire and Diamond Baguette Horseshoe Necklace and the Large Baguette Lucky Horseshoe Diamond Necklace bring an element of opulence. The deep blue sapphires, meticulously cut into baguettes, contrast beautifully against the diamonds, creating a vivid, eye-catching effect. Meanwhile, the Lucky Horseshoe Jumbo Baguette Diamond Necklace, with over 2.3 carats of diamonds, embodies luxury, making it the perfect addition to an evening ensemble. Adding a pop of color, the Topaz and Diamond Lucky Horseshoe Necklace features vibrant blue topaz stones complemented by brilliant diamonds, an ensemble that exudes Western refinement.
Coinciding with the expansion of the Lucky Horseshoe Collection, Karina Brez has launched a fresh new look for her website, offering a dynamic and immersive shopping experience. Designed with the equestrian lifestyle in mind, the updated website reflects her signature aesthetic—blending
Western charm with modern sophistication.
Visitors will discover stunning visuals, including vibrant imagery showcasing layering options, equestrian-inspired styling, and the essence of cowgirl couture. With streamlined navigation and a focus on storytelling, the new website invites customers to explore collections, discover styling inspiration, and locate retail partners with ease. Bespoke services are also featured, allowing collectors to commission Brez for one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect their connection to horses and fine jewelry.
With Western and equestrian fashion maintaining a strong presence in luxury styling, the Lucky Horseshoe Collection remains an on-trend expression of independence and charm. Whether gifted as a meaningful token or worn as a personal talisman, each jewel offers elevated elegance with a touch of luck for every day.
Karina Brez’s Lucky Horseshoe Collection is available online at https://karinabrez.com/, and at select retail partners, offering a stunning array of necklaces that celebrate the connection between equestrian culture and fine jewelry. On Instagram, follow Karina Brez @karinabrezjewelry and The Jeweled Barn @thejeweledbarn.
A first-generation Ukrainian American, Karina Brez earned the title of Miss Florida USA in 2012, and was inspired to design a jewelry collection after fellow contestants were impressed by the design she created for her own pageant dress. A horse enthusiast with a passion for gemstones, Brez completed the GIA Graduate Gemologist program, is an appraiser, and advocates for non-profits introducing children to the healing power of horses. Her signature fine jewelry collections are Huggable Hooves, Horse LUV, Bit of LUV, Lucky Horseshoe, Horsea, The Garden Collection, Cowgirl LUV, and Stirr It Up. Karina Brez opened a retail flagship in Palm Beach, Florida in 2021, and is available in retailers throughout the USA.

Now there are some of you that have never purchased a life policy but have life insurance coverage as a benefit from your employer or union. If so, did you know that in most instances you are not able to keep that life insurance coverage if you should leave your job or union?
If the only life insurance coverage that you have is from your job/union, you may want to consider the following:
-How many years of lost income does it provide for my family?
-What happens if my employer goes out of business?
-Am I covered if I become disabled or retire?
-What happens if I change employers?
Billie Holliday once sang, “God bless the child that’s got their own.” This is great advice, remember it is always better to have insurance and not need it, than need it and not have it, which is too often the case. Bye for now, Bren.

(StatePoint) One of the best ways to prioritize your vitality is with an annual health exam. That’s especially true for older adults, who tend to have more health issues to manage, according to Dr. Grant Tarbox, national medical executive with Cigna Healthcare’s Medicare business. Annual exams can vary and go by different names, depending on your coverage. Generally, they are offered at no cost to you through Medicare or Medicare Advantage (MA) and there are a host of reasons to get one, Tarbox said, including the following: Having a health care team leader. It’s important to have a trusted advisor leading your health care team. That is the purpose of a primary care physician (PCP). A PCP knows your family and treatment histories and concerns. They play an important role keeping a broad view of all your care needs and can help you navigate them. By visiting your PCP at least annually, you maintain a critical relationship that will serve you well when you need it. Putting a plan together. Your annual exam is the time to discuss which health screenings and immunizations could be important for you based on your age, gender, and medical and family history. These include such things as a flu shot, a mammogram, or a colorectal screening. Talk to your doctor about what preventive care activities are right for you and put together a plan to get them. Most are covered at no extra cost through Medicare or MA.
Addressing conditions before they worsen. Aging increases the risk of certain chronic illnesses such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes and arthritis. Ignoring these conditions won’t make them go away. Always tell your health care provider about any recent changes you are experiencing. Working with your provider to proactively manage a chronic condition before it worsens helps you to maintain your independence and vitality. Reviewing medications. If you take one or more medications, an annual exam is a good time to review them with your PCP. You may even want

to take your prescriptions to your appointment. Are these medications effective? Are you taking them as prescribed? Are there any undesirable side effects? Are there potential harmful interactions, including with over-thecounter drugs? You also can secure your refills and maybe even shift to home delivery for convenience or to save money. Making lifestyle adjustments. Even small changes can help you live longer and better. Talk honestly with your health care provider about your lifestyle. They may recommend changes, such as exercising, stopping smoking, or eating healthy. Checking on your mental health. Your emotional health impacts your physical health. Depression doesn’t have to be a part of aging. Let your health care provider know if you are feeling sad, anxious or hopeless. They may recommend increasing your social interaction. Additionally, treatments,
such as talk therapy, medication or both, may be covered by Medicare or MA. For more tips on how to make the most of your annual exam, visit https://www.cigna.com/medicare/member-resources/#media-resources. If those aren’t compelling enough reasons to get an annual health exam, then consider the fact that some Medicare Advantage plans will even pay you an incentive to ensure that you get one, said Tarbox. He added that you may also want to see your dentist and eye doctor annually to ensure whole body health. Those visits are among the extra benefits often covered by an MA plan, he said.
