Property Tax Exemptions Are Available For Eligible Homeowners
Continued from page 1
BY TIA CAROL JONES
According to the Cook County Assessor’s Office, the most common exemption is the Homeowner Exemption, which saves a Cook County property owner an average of approximately $950 dollars each year.
“Every homeowner should take full advantage of the exemptions they are entitled to. When I am in the community talking to residents about their property taxes, the first thing I tell them is to check for missing exemptions,” Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi said in a press release. “If you own and live in your home you are most likely eligible for the Homeowner Exemption, regardless of citizenship status. If you live in your home and don’t claim this and other exemptions, you’re missing out on hundreds of dollars in property tax savings.”
During a press conference on Wednesday, March 5th, Kaegi was joined by key community stakeholders that talked about the benefit of residents’ applying for the property tax exemptions. Kaegi also noted that the Homeowner, Senior, and Persons with Disabilities Exemptions are automatically renewed, while homeowners who previously received the Veterans with Disabilities and the “Senior Freeze” Exemptions would need to re-apply.

“AARP Illinois is committed to helping older adults remain in their homes, homes they worked for their entire lives,” Largent said.
Largent strongly encouraged all homeowners aged 65 and older to apply for the Senior exemption, and if eligible, the Senior Freeze, which is for seniors whose total annual household income is $65,000 or less. AARP Illinois is furthering assisting seniors by hosting virtual and in-person events. Upcoming events will take place on April 1st and April 4th. For more information, visit www.aarp.org/il.
“AARP is dedicated to empowering older adults to live their best lives. We believe that everyone deserves an opportunity to age, with financial security,” Largent said.
Elizabeth Soto, Superintendent for the Veterans Assistance Commission of Cook County (VACCC), said having exemptions for returning and disabled veterans is a crucial step in ensuring they receive the homeownership support they deserve, by easing their financial burden.
Danielle Matthews, Director of Homeownership Services at Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago (NHS), said the staff at NHS is available to assist homeowners in person and virtually with understanding exemption options and applying for tax exemptions. For more information about NHS, visit nhschicago.org.
Philippe Largent, State Director of AARP Illinois, said seniors want the ability to stay in their homes and age in place. He said AARP Illinois has heard stories of seniors having to sell their

You are the “where’d you go to high school” question every Chicagoan asks when meeting another anywhere in the world, that immediately places the responder within the comforting landscape of community, family, faith, and other touchpoints, like the “where your people from?” question in the times of the Great Migration - even now relevant, even now connecting. Chicago, I love you through thick, thin, and in between. I love our people, the city’s greatest asset of all. We are a very proud city, and rightfully so! We have attitude, and when we feel a certain way, we say so. Do not expect this town to bow or capitulate, especially when our people or our values are at stake. That’s not us. The expansion of SIP follows the first year of programming in 2023, which was made possible through a partnership between SFI, Stackwell, and Prudential Financial. The program’s initial cohort achieved promising results as noted by the Financial Health Network, a nonprofit and leading voice on financial health serving as an impact evaluator, in the recently released study: “Closing the Racial Wealth Gap With Financial Asset Ownership.”
This expansion is made possible due to new philanthropic grants from The Prudential Foundation, The Institute for Consumer Money Management, and other philanthropic sponsors totaling $1.65M of funding for the program. This groundbreaking initiative is aimed at helping students attending Minority Serving Institutions, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), within SFI’s network. The program will provide opportunities for students to gain critical financial education and investment skills, empowering them to overcome traditional barriers to investing and build a foundation for long-term financial security.
“Stackwell’s work is an essential part of addressing the financial challenges faced by our students,” said Keith B. Shoates, President and CEO of Student Freedom Initiative. “Our partnership is a powerful example of how we can leverage technology and philanthropy to build sustainable and scalable financial futures. The impact of the Student Investment Program is clear: increased financial education
Of the students who were evaluated in this study, there was a 167% increase in students reporting high levels of knowledge about investing, comfort with investing increased by 88%, confidence in reaching longterm financial goals increased by 63%, and 99% of participating students who began investing on the Stackwell platform remain in the markets. Additionally, the program had an even greater impact on women participants, who reported a 127% increase in feeling like investing was for them, a 257% increase in comfort with investment decisions, and a 338% increase in high-level investing knowledge.
“We are excited to expand the Student Investment Program to reach even more students, equipping them with the tools they need to succeed financially,” said Trevor Rozier-Byrd, Founder and CEO of Stackwell. “Through SIP, we are breaking down barriers to wealth, equity, economic mobility, and our shared prosperity with increased stock market investment and enhanced financial wellness education. We could not be prouder of the outcomes we share today, and the work we will continue to do alongside SFI and their funding partners.”
The SIP is part of SFI and Stackwell’s broader strategies to close the wealth gap and build a foundation of financial independence within underrepresented communities. Like SFI, through data-driven initiatives and a commitment to increasing financial wellness, Stackwell
is pioneering efforts to ensure that the next generation of investors from these communities are more financially educated and empowered to succeed.

A single purpose nonprofit organization, Student Freedom Initiative aims to reduce the wealth gap through the lens of education. This is achieved by providing a catalyst for freedom in professional and life choices for students attending Minority Serving Institutions (“MSIs”) by increasing their social and economic mobility using a student centric, evidence based, holistic, and collaborative approach. Initially focused on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Student Freedom Initiative enables mobility through four transformational components: (1) Student Freedom Fund as a private education loan alternative to Parent PLUS loans, (2) Internships and industry-driven certifications, (3) Comprehensive Supports, and (4) Institutional Transformation (e.g., access to affordable broadband, strengthening endowment governance and risk adjusted returns, workforce development in clean energy and living spaces). Karina Brez Expands Her Lucky Horseshoe Collection, a Symbol of Strength, Luck, and Equestrian Style
New York, NY -- Internationally renowned equestrian jeweler Karina Brez introduces new additions to her iconic Lucky Horseshoe Collection, a tribute to the enduring spirit of the horse and the power of luck. Drawing inspiration from equestrian culture, a lifestyle that blends freedom and grace, these new horseshoe designs reflect the deep connection between rider and horse while embodying Western fashion, a style that continues to captivate pop culture and the world.
For centuries, the beloved horseshoe has been a symbol of protection and good fortune. Karina Brez reinterprets this emblem in a collection that blends luxury with meaning, offering handcrafted jewels designed to celebrate the power, resilience, and confidence of those who wear them. Whether in 18K yellow, white or rose gold, adorned with diamonds, or featuring high-quality colored gemstones, each new addition to the Lucky Horseshoe Collection captures the essence of equestrian heritage, transformed into wearable art.
As the world embraces Western-inspired fashion with enthusiasm, cowgirl culture is no longer just a nostalgic nod to the past—it’s a movement. The modern cowgirl represents independence, fearlessness, and a deep appreciation for the land and the animals she cherishes. From the rodeo to the runway, equestrian influences have taken center stage, making bold belt buckles, cowboy boots, and horseshoe motifs a defining trend in high fashion. More than ever, women are embracing the carefree yet powerful symbolism of the cowgirl, reclaiming feminine strength through rugged, yet refined style. The Lucky Horseshoe Collection reflects this shift, celebrating both the beauty and the boldness of the modern woman, whether she’s in the saddle or stepping into a boardroom.
“I have always believed that jewelry should tell a story, carry meaning, and inspire confidence,” says Karina Brez, whose deep connection to the equestrian world informs every piece she designs. “The horseshoe is a symbol that
has been passed down for centuries, carrying with it luck, protection, and resilience. As Cowgirl culture continues to influence luxury jewelry, I wanted to create pieces that honor this heritage while remaining timeless for today’s women.”
Among the highlights is the Pearl and Diamond Horseshoe Necklace, a piece that blends femininity with powerful symbolism. The luminous pearls add a touch of softness, while diamonds enhance the brilliance of the horseshoe motif, making it a perfect standalone statement or an elegant layering piece. The Turquoise and Diamond Horseshoe Necklace is another standout design, with 0.43 ct. of shimmering diamonds surrounding 0.99 ct. of round turquoise cabochons in a horseshoe shape—an eye-catching jewel for on and off the track. Brez’s Mini Plain Horseshoe Necklace, Ring, and Earrings offer a subtle nod to luck, with their understated gold silhouette serving as a versatile staple for any jewelry collection.
For those who prefer bolder statements, the Large Sapphire and Diamond Baguette Horseshoe Necklace and the Large Baguette Lucky Horseshoe Diamond Necklace bring an element of opulence. The deep blue sapphires, meticulously cut into baguettes, contrast beautifully against the diamonds, creating a vivid, eye-catching effect. Meanwhile, the Lucky Horseshoe Jumbo Baguette Diamond Necklace, with over 2.3 carats of diamonds, embodies luxury, making it the perfect addition to an evening ensemble. Adding a pop of color, the Topaz and Diamond Lucky Horseshoe Necklace features vibrant blue topaz stones complemented by brilliant diamonds, an ensemble that exudes Western refinement.
Coinciding with the expansion of the Lucky Horseshoe Collection, Karina Brez has launched a fresh new look for her website, offering a dynamic and immersive shopping experience. Designed with the equestrian lifestyle in mind, the updated website reflects her signature aesthetic—blending
Western charm with modern sophistication.
Visitors will discover stunning visuals, including vibrant imagery showcasing layering options, equestrian-inspired styling, and the essence of cowgirl couture. With streamlined navigation and a focus on storytelling, the new website invites customers to explore collections, discover styling inspiration, and locate retail partners with ease. Bespoke services are also featured, allowing collectors to commission Brez for one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect their connection to horses and fine jewelry.
With Western and equestrian fashion maintaining a strong presence in luxury styling, the Lucky Horseshoe Collection remains an on-trend expression of independence and charm. Whether gifted as a meaningful token or worn as a personal talisman, each jewel offers elevated elegance with a touch of luck for every day.
Karina Brez’s Lucky Horseshoe Collection is available online at https://karinabrez.com/, and at select retail partners, offering a stunning array of necklaces that celebrate the connection between equestrian culture and fine jewelry. On Instagram, follow Karina Brez @karinabrezjewelry and The Jeweled Barn @thejeweledbarn.

Life insurance is a crucial financial tool, but many people misunderstand its purpose and use. It is my intent to help bring the truth to light when you examine your policies or consider purchasing a life policy.
If you purchased a life insurance policy for yourself or for others you were probably motivated to do so for one of the following reasons.

Now there are some of you that have never purchased a life policy but have life insurance coverage as a benefit from your employer or union. If so, did you know that in most instances you are not able to keep that life insurance coverage if you should leave your job or union?
If the only life insurance coverage that you have is from your job/union, you may want to consider the following:
-How many years of lost income does it provide for my family?
-What happens if my employer goes out of business?
-Am I covered if I become disabled or retire?
-What happens if I change employers?
Billie Holliday once sang, “God bless the child that’s got their own.” This is great advice, remember it is always better to have insurance and not need it, than need it and not have it, which is too often the case. Bye for now, Bren.
QUIZ: What is the best reason to purchase a term life insurance policy?
Answer to last week’s quiz: Long term disability insurance not only provides protection of income due to illness/accident, but it can also have a rider that allows for the payment of a death benefit.

This eagerly anticipated documentary follows his critically acclaimed works “Ghana: Africa’s Exciting Entry Point? (2022)” and “Nigeria: Can Its Youth Shape Its Future? (2023)”, which have been showcased in the UK, Europe and Miami via Soho House.
“Jamaica: Africa’s Close Cousin?” will explore the intricate historical and cultural ties connecting the Caribbean and Africa. Busigu seeks to unravel the connections between these regions, bridging past and present to offer a fresh perspective on identity, heritage, and global Black Consciousness through these intimate conversations. This Docu-Film is set to be his most ambitious work to date, as he sets out to Jamaica for the first time to understand its resonance to Mother Africa.

Through collaborating with Violet and others, Norman will feature exclusive interviews with renowned individuals and community leaders in Jamaica.

Building on the themes explored in his previous documentaries, this Docu-Film will employ groundbreaking drone photography and archival footage restoration techniques to bring historical sites and modern cultural venues to life. For this project, Busigu is partnering with local production company Cab Concepts to ensure the historical accuracy and cultural sensitivity throughout the picture remain intact.
Busigu and his team are seeking sponsors and partners to support the production and distribution of this groundbreaking project.

That’s especially true for older adults, who tend to have more health issues to manage, according to Dr. Grant Tarbox, national medical executive with Cigna Healthcare’s Medicare business. Annual exams can vary and go by different names, depending on your coverage. Generally, they are offered at no cost to you through Medicare or Medicare Advantage (MA) and there are a host of reasons to get one, Tarbox said, including the following: Having a health care team leader. It’s important to have a trusted advisor leading your health care team. That is the purpose of a primary care physician (PCP). A PCP knows your family and treatment histories and concerns. They play an important role keeping a broad view of all your care needs and can help you navigate them. By visiting your PCP at least annually, you maintain a critical relationship that will serve you well when you need it.
Putting a plan together. Your annual exam is the time to discuss which health screenings and immunizations could be important for you based on your age, gender, and medical and family history. These include such things as a flu shot, a mammogram, or a colorectal screening. Talk to your doctor about what preventive care activities are right for you and put together a plan to get them. Most are covered at no extra cost through Medicare or MA.
Addressing conditions before they worsen. Aging increases the risk of certain chronic illnesses such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes and arthritis. Ignoring these conditions won’t make them go away. Always tell your health care provider about any recent changes you are experiencing. Working with your provider to proactively manage a chronic condition before it worsens helps you to maintain your independence and vitality.
Reviewing medications. If you take one or more medications, an annual exam is a good time to review them with your PCP. You may even want to take your prescriptions to your appointment. Are these medications effective? Are you taking them as prescribed? Are there any undesirable side effects? Are there potential harmful interactions, including with over-the-counter drugs? You also can secure your refills and maybe even shift to home delivery for convenience or to save money.
Making lifestyle adjustments. Even small changes can help you live longer and better. Talk honestly with your health care provider about your lifestyle. They may recommend changes, such as exercising, stopping smoking, or eating healthy.
Checking on your mental health. Your emotional health impacts your physical health. Depression doesn’t have to be a part of aging. Let your health care provider know if you are feeling sad, anxious or hopeless. They may recommend increasing your social interaction. Additionally, treatments, such as talk therapy, medication or both, may be covered by Medicare or MA.

If those aren’t compelling enough reasons to get an annual health exam, then consider the fact that some Medicare Advantage plans will even pay you an incentive to ensure that you get one, said Tarbox. He added that you may also want to see your dentist and eye doctor annually to ensure whole body health. Those visits are among the extra benefits often covered by an MA plan, he said.
