he ‘Coalition 2 Build the Lucas Museum’ in a recent press conference announced their support for the Lucas Museum. In 2014, Star Wars creator George Lucas announced plans to bring his museum to Chicago after San Francisco rejected his initial proposed location. Plans for the lakefront museum were quickly halted when the advocacy group Friends of the Park filed a lawsuit preventing Mayor Rahm Emmanuel from gifting Lucas with 17 acres of park land near Soldier Field.

Chicago Urban League Works to Combat High Youth Unemployment By Monique Smith

Summer in Chicago means outdoor festivals, al fresco dining, roof top bars and loads of fun for the entire family. It also means more youth on the streets with no opportunity who become victims or perpetrators of crime. Nationally, the unemployment rate remains steady at around 5 percent but rate for Chicago is above average at 6.5 percent. The Chicago Urban League is very concerned about the consequences of surging youth unemployment. According to a 2016 published report by The Great Cities Institute at the University of Illinois at Chicago in comparison to their white and Latino counterparts, 47 percent of young black men ages 20-24 are both out of work and out of school. This is compared to 17.7 percent of Latinos and 9.1 percent of white youth. The Workplace Development Director for the Chicago Urban League, Andrew Wells is very concerned about the high unemployment numbers. “As summer approaches, the focus must be on providing jobs for our young people.

If there were jobs available in Chicago there would be less violence,” he said. Long term unemployment disproportionately affects African-American youth ages 16-24 more than any other racial group of their peers. The question then becomes what is behind these staggering numbers and why are the numbers much higher than that of white and Latino youth? The racial dynamic often plays a significant factor but so does work ethic. “The issue is very complex, you have the issue of individuals being ready for the job market, and it’s also middle age people who are competing for the same jobs. You go into stores like Walmart and who do you see? You see a lot of older individuals in those jobs,” said Wells. Corporations tend to favor older candidates because they are more reliable and have a better work ethic. “A lot of youth come from generations of poverty and don’t have a work ethic because they haven’t seen anyone go to work,” said Wells. Established in 1916, the Chicago Urban League works for economic, educational and social progress for African Americans. One of

the ways they work to combat this issue is by entering into a partnership with Mayor Rahm Emmanuel’s One Summer Chicago, a youth jobs program. Wells stresses how important it is to form these types of partnerships. One Summer Chicago brings together government institutions, community based organizations and companies that will offer 25,000 employment and internship opportunities to youth and young adults. The Chicago Urban League recognizes the need to help these young people beyond the time the summer programs end. One of the latest initiatives that will accompany their year-round Job Readiness, Career Exploration, Job Placement and Retention Services, is a new program called Opportunity Works. This program provides exposure to career pathways to in-demand job sectors and the project serves 150 disadvantaged youth with limited skills. Wells said, ““Private-sector engagement and investments are critical to improving youth employability by providing training, workplace internships and entry-level jobs to African American youth,” he said.

Briefly Study warns juvenile expungement system is not working

Laws and policies governing the treatment of court and arrest records of youth “threaten public safety, produce substantial unnecessary costs, and impede young people’s ability to transition to productive adulthood,” according to a comprehensive study released recently by the Illinois Juvenile Justice Commission. Although state law long has emphasized the principle that a youth’s mistakes should not brand that child for life, Illinois youth have been harmed by the erosion of confidentiality protections and the extreme difficulty and expense of erasing a record through the expungement process, according to the report, “Burdened for Life: The Myth of Juvenile Record Confidentiality and Expungement in Illinois.” “While many believe juvenile records are kept confidential, they are not,” the report states. “The erosion of record confidentiality protections over the past 40 years calls into question whether the word confidential can be used in good faith anymore. Through broad lawful record sharing and the widespread incidence of unlawful sharing, the potential for accessing and sharing juvenile information has never been greater. “In light of this expanded access, juvenile record expungement is a crucial mechanism to ensure that a person’s youthful mistakes do not limit future access to employment, housing, and education,” the report continues. “Unfortunately, Illinois’ juvenile expungement system is not working.” In Illinois, tens of thousands of juveniles are arrested each year, and the largest majority of those arrests by far are for non-violent offenses. Over the last decade, only three of every 1,000 arrests were expunged in Illinois, the study determined. The report recommends enhancement of the confidentiality of juvenile records and increased access to juvenile expungement consistent with recommendations of the American Bar Association.

years and a varied amount of processes to make it happen. First, a non-profit foundation is organized, that organization is dedicated to raising awareness, rally support and raises funds for the project. The foundation was formally incorporated in January 2014 and several organizations submitted proposals for the honor of hosting the institution. Among them were the University of Hawaii, Columbia University, the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Chicago. The University of Chicago was ultimately selected as the site where the Obama Foundation would be housed. The Obama Foundation laid out the mission for the Obama Presidential Center and it is to connect people from different backgrounds, inspire and empower people to take action on the big civil and political challenges of our time by educating them on their civil rights and responsibilities as citizens. The center will include a library, museum and office space for the foundation. Once the Obama Presidential Center is completed, it will be the 14th site in the National Archives and Records Administration’s presidential library systems. The next phase of this project includes the selection process for an architect and there are currently seven that are submitting proposals for this project. The site where the library is to be located on the south side of Chicago has yet to be determined, but the choices are Jackson Park or Washington Park. South Side residents will be able to benefit greatly from having the center built in this part of the city. Like the Lucas Museum, Finney said, the money that is slated to be infused in developing the land and creating jobs will bring a needed economic stimulus to the south side. “The Obama Presidential Center and the Lucas Museum will complement each other and be powerful generators of tourism,” he said.

w Rod Robinson, ConnXus CEO and founder Robinson founded ConnXus in 2010 as a result of his personal experience and frustration with the complexities associated with locating qualified diverse suppliers, tracking spending, maintaining diversity certifications, and reporting reliable results in accordance with corporate and government mandates. ConnXus now solves this problem with a user-friendly and cloud-based technology platform. “During my tenure as a procurement executive with responsibility for supplier diversity,” he said, “I thought it was expensive and inefficient to pay for access to separate databases to search for minority-, women- , veteran-, and other classifications of diverse-owned businesses. ConnXus now makes it simple, with a single database of 1.7 million+ suppliers that combines all diversity classifications. Bid opportunities disseminated through the ConnXus platform have led to millions of dollars spent with diverse suppliers.” While minority- and woman-owned businesses represent more than 50 percent of all U.S. businesses, they only account for 6 percent of the $30 trillion in total annual revenue generated. Because small businesses provide 65 percent of net new jobs, it is imperative to foster an economic environment that supports the growth of small and diverse businesses. ConnXus is proud that 29 percent of its own employees are minority and 38 percent are women. This includes the hiring of COO and early investor Daryl Hammett, previously the highest-ranking African-American executive at the global retail giant Luxottica Retail, where he was a senior vice president & general manager running a $900-million brand. In support of young business leaders, Hammett has been a member of the prestigious, Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO) international Cincinnati Chapter since 2012.

onnXus, a supplier diversity technology platform, today announced that it has closed $5 million in Series “A” funding, led by Techstars Ventures, Serious Change L.P. and Impact America Fund. “This round of funding will significantly accelerate ConnXus’ long-term impact on generating sustainable and diverse supply chains,” said Rod Robinson, CEO and founder of ConnXus. “To date we’ve raised $10 million in investments, including participation from Techstars Ventures, CincyTech, Serious Change L.P., Impact America Fund, and several private angel investors.” ConnXus’ cloud-based, supplier diversity sustainability dashboards open the door for procurement, supplier diversity, and supply chain professionals to access a wealth of global supply chain analytics. Robinson believes Techstars and the other investors are the right investors for the company to disrupt and add imperative value to the $10-billion supply chain and procurement software market.

w Daryl Hammett, COO and early investor of ConnXus “Not only does ConnXus align with our initiatives to serve high-performing, emerging technology companies, but they have created innovative software that directly improves diversity in the supply chain for startups and corporations,” said David Cohen, Techstars’ co-founder and managing partner. “Our investment in ConnXus is the latest investment from Techstars Ventures, our third fund, which is focused on seed and Series ‘A’ investments.”

money matters Memo to Congress: Americans Want Financial Advice in Their Best Interest Results of an AARP survey shows 9 in 10 Americans agree with the recently announced US Department of Labor (DOL) rule that will require professional retirement plan advice to be in a client’s best interest. The survey comes as the US House of Representatives voted at the end of April to stop protections for retirement investors that require best interest advice. The rule, finalized at the beginning of April, is expected to save middle-class families billions of dollars per year. “Americans have been losing billions of dollars every year receiving retirement savings advice from financial advisors not committed to giving recommendations in their clients’ own best interest,” said AARP Executive Vice President Nancy LeaMond. “It’s telling that while all seem to publicly agree with this standard, many still want to stop this rule from going in to effect next year.

The Urban League Movement and Walgreens have partnered to support the youth of Flint, Michigan, amid the city’s water crisis. More than 80 volunteers from the National Urban League’s affiliate groups, the Young Professionals, and the Guild, along with a group of staff from the National Urban League’s New York headquarters, arrived recently in Flint to help distribute supplies donated by Walgreens and to mentor children and teens. “The core of the Young Professionals is service, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to have a positive impact on the Flint community and the young people struggling to meet this challenge,” said Carlos J. Clanton, President of the National Urban League Young Professionals and a member of the National Urban League’s Board of Trustees. “I’m proud that so many of our members were able to join us in Flint and so willing to devote their time and talent to supporting this resilient community.”

Walgreens has donated two truckloads of bottled water to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, along with 2,500 units of hand sanitizer and 800 packets of cleansing wipes. In partnership with Comcast Cares Day, an annual service project by Comcast NBCUniversal employees, the Urban League volunteers distributed supplies and food, assembled school supply kits, and conducted creative and educational activities for students at the Boys and Girls Club. Volunteers met recently at the Boys and Girls Club with 100 students ages 7 to 17 for a town hall to discuss the water crisis and its impact, and to introduce the students to the National Urban League signature program, Project Ready STEM. Project Ready STEM prepares students for success in college and careers, with a special focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics. At a recent news conference at the Food Bank, Cynthia Stokes-Murray, President of the National Urban League Council of Guilds, said, “It’s

important to remember that Flint needs much more than just safe drinking water. Deindustrialization here has left the community to struggle with high unemployment, drive, and a desperate lack of public resources. These challenges cannot be resolved simply by installing new water pipes.” Marriott Hotels and Resorts donated several dozen hotel rooms to house the volunteers during their stay in Flint. The volunteers are working with community members to form a Flint chapter of the Young Professionals to remain engaged with the work that has already begun. Urban League of Flint Board Chair Reggie Smith, said, “We, the trustees of the Urban League of Flint, are both proud and honored that our national office -- as well as Walgreen and Comcast -- are here in Flint to assist us with this water crisis. The Flint affiliate stands ready to help members of our community through this difficult time.” Follow the volunteers’ progress on social media with the hashtag #StandWithFlint.

In 1994, there were 54 black-owned banks in this country, according the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) and just 22 years later, there are only 21 remaining. These 21 banks have a total of $4.7 billion dollars in assets, but only count as 0.43 % of the $1.1 trillion in black buying power. Illinois Service Federal Savings and Loans, 4619 S. King Dr., has served the African American community since the 1934. ISF was established in the Bronzeville community during the Great Migration, a time in history where blacks from the South moved to north to Chicago and other northern regions in an effort to escape segregation. Being north didn’t rid blacks of their limited economic opportunities, so community members and leaders at that time decided to join together and establish their own banks. Banks that would serve their interest and years later like so many other black owned banks, ISF faced the possibility of closure until an invest group came in and acquired it. Many Americans can recall the 2008 economic downturn and the threat of the country being on the brink of financial collapse, the housing marketing in the tank and banks on the brink of ruin creating the unforgettable term ‘too big to fail’. Banking institutions like ISF are CDFI’s. The term stands for Community Development Financial Institute. CDFI’s are mission-driven financial institutions that create economic opportunity for individuals and small businesses, quality affordable housing, and essential community services throughout the United States. Monica Thomas, Vice President and Community Banking Officer at ISF said the bank started experiencing difficulty in late 2007 going into 2008. “That’s when we began to see the effect on our balance sheets,” she said. Winning prestigious banking awards like the Bank Enterprise award which is a monetary award given to banks for their exceptional lending practices wasn’t enough to secure its financial standing and keep the doors open. Towards the end of the collapse, ISF was given the directive to start raising capital and seek out potential investors. What about the big government bailout? ISF did receive some assistance

but like the community it serves it was still strained. “When your intent on serving your customers, their struggle is your struggle,” said Thomas. Groupe Nduom is a Ghanaian family-run investment group with personal and professional ties the Midwest. Dr. Kwesi Nduom, who was born in Ghana West Africa, received his Bachelors, Masters and PhD from the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Nduom and his family lived in the Midwest for several years before moving to the Washington, DC area. In the early 1990’s they moved back to Ghana. He and his wife, Mrs. Yvonne Nduom along with two of their four children, N. Kweku Nduom, Vice president, Business Development and Finance and P.W. Chiefy Nduom, Vice President and General Counsel for the company make up Groupe Nduom. Their investment portfolio consists of various business enterprises including tourism, media, financial services, sports and real estate. “We were looking to get into banking in the U.S. when the opportunity with ISF presented itself and though it was a great opportunity to preserve a great institution,” Kweku Nduom went on to say, “Chicago also has a great Ghanaian community.” He has said the investment group will manage ISF Bank from afar, but he along with the other family members that make up Groupe Nduom, will be in Chicago on a regular basis to check on their investment. Both the banks vice president and the Nduom family have said they have no plans to make changes in the personnel at ISF and want to help continue serving the community in the most professional and courteous manner possible. On the partnerships, both parties are enthused about what the opportunity can bring. “Our family is really excited about the opportunity to extend and expand the influence of such a historic institution in the community it was designed to serve” said Nduom. Ms. Thomas, who is also excited about the partnership said, “ISF has had a long standing legacy of being on the right side of history and I think this partnership with the Nduom Family is history in the making.” ISF currently has two locations, the original branch in Bronzeville and one on 8700 S. King Drive in the Chatham community.

LIVING

Why It's Important to Carve Your Own Identity but not participating in labeling.

(StatePoint) As a society, we sometimes tend to put people in boxes and narrow an individual's character to a single label especially if he or she is dif ferent from us. While accepting the labels people apply to us seems only natural at times; doing so can be limit ing. However, when you defy labels, you can set the tone for your own life, say experts. Here are a few things to consider: Labels Start Early As early as kindergarten, labels are used at school to define children. Teachers label students according to skills, abilities and behavior. Children label

other students according to social status. At such a young age, children often inter nalize these general ideas about themselves; and over coming the idea that one is a “slow learner” or a “dork” can be an uphill battle. Without a bit of will, a label can be a selffulfilling prophecy. Descriptions vs. Labels Describing people, places and things is a big part of how we communicate. But there’s a differ ence between providing valuable or specific informa tion about someone, and simply labeling them. Evaluate your words and see if you can stick to facts and insights. You can help others define themselves

Defying Labels Most everyone has been labeled at some point. However, labels are not only applied to people, but also to the cars we drive and the homes we live in. For example, ever since the first MINI car was built in 1959, it has been called many things. “People have put labels on the MINI brand for years. We`ve been called the ‘small car’ or the ‘cute car,’” says Tom Noble, department head, MINI Brand communications. Noble says that while the brand has acknowledged those labels, they’ve also sought to innovate and have defied them in certain ways and this has led to product innovation. In that spirit of selfdefinition, MINI has launched the Defy Labels contest. Anyone can nomi nate himself or others who have defied labels in a bold and powerful way. After the nomination period, there will be a series of votes to determine finalists and a winner. The winner gets a twoyear lease on the new MINI Clubman. “The contest isn’t about rebellion, but rather about creating your own path regardless of the labels you’ve been given; a concept the MINI brand understands and embodies ,” says Noble. To learn more about the contest, visit minidefylabels.com or follow the conversation at #DefyLabels. Shedding Labels

Whether you’re with friends or foes, family or strangers, you’ll likely have to deal with being labeled by others. And the longer you’ve known someone, the harder it can be to shed the oneword conceptions they have about you. In the face of having others define you, being true to oneself isn’t always easy, but it can be done. Consider the labels assigned to you. If you don’t agree with them, defy them. It may take others time to notice the change, but it can be worth the effort. PHOTO SOURCE: (c) Rawpixel.com Fotolia.com
