THE 40TH ANNUAL UNCF CHICAGO WALK FOR EDUCATION RAISES $104,857
CHICAGO – The 40th Annual UNCF Chicago Walk for Education held at Burnham Park recently raised more than $104K in funds that will help deserving students go to college. More than 500 supporters came out to the event, which had an atmosphere of camaraderie filled with unity, purpose, and hope.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle returned this year to serve as the Honorary Chair of the walk. Popular radio personalities, Ramonski Luv from OmniChannel and Trey White from WGCI-FM, kept the crowd engaged and uplifted as the event’s co-emcees.
The occasion’s significance was highlighted by Fred Mitchell, Vice President, Development Mid-Atlantic/Midwest Divisions UNCF, who spoke of the “profound impact of UNCF over the past 79 years.” He emphasized the organization’s “vital role in making possible a quality education for thousands of students,” thereby giving them the foundation and paving the way for their success in life and in their future careers.
The event allowed participants to select a 5K walk/run or a 10K bike/skate course, all while enjoying the scenic beauty of Burnham Park on the city’s South Side. Special moments included an inspiring program featuring guest speakers, incredible performances by the Jesse White Tumblers, and an energizing warm-up session led by Chicago native Miss Illinois 2022, Monica Niá Jones. Jones became the first black woman in 20 years to hold the title.

Broderick Johnson, Executive Vice President of Public Policy and Digital Equity for Comcast, said the contribution was made because it ties into the company’s overall commitment to digital equity and closing the digital divide. It is something Comcast has been doing for more than a decade.
“What we’ve learned over the course of that decade is the importance of providing resources to community-based organizations, to organizations and entities like the Chicago Public Library, that are fundamental to the trust that is built in communities across the country,” Johnson said.
Johnson added, it is important to have individuals and organizations that are trusted in the local communities that are able to spread the word about the importance of signing onto the internet and how to use the internet effectively.
Digital navigators are professionals who will connect people to resources and help them build digital skills. Those skills include help with school projects and connecting them to programs that can help them pay for internet services at home.
“It’s extremely important to be able to get people to sign up for the internet, to sign up to the Affordable Connectivity Program, for example, to sign up to a product we’ve been offering for a decade, Internet Essentials,” Johnson said.

“It’s not just access to the internet that is important, but it’s also having a device. Laptops are among the most important devices for folks to have to use the internet effectively,” Johnson said.

Grubhub Marks Hunger Action Month with New Chicago Initiatives and Expands Existing Programs
At the start of this year, Grubhub outlined three areas of focus for its philanthropic giving model, including an emphasis on helping to close the hunger gap. During Hunger Action Month this September, we are making an impact with new partnerships and efforts in Chicago, New York and in other key cities.
According to this year’s August Consumer Food Insights Report, the U.S. continues to confront food insecurity, with 14 percent of the population considered food insecure. In addition to our year-long programs and partnerships that help bridge the hunger gap, this month we are rolling out several new efforts. These include a new Grubhub microgrant program that will support Chicago nonprofits, a partnership with the Greater Chicago Food Depository (Food Depository) that will significantly increase meal distribution in areas of the city with high levels of food insecurity,
serving as the official Hunger Action Month sponsor of Food Bank for NYC’s (FBNYC) activities and hosting a series of Serving the City (STC) events.
Here’s how Grubhub is showing up in communities across the country.
In our hometown of Chicago we’re introducing two new initiatives.
New $1 million microgrant program to support local nonprofits tackling food insecurity. Grubhub is introducing a microgrant program, with operational support from the Food Depository and Nourishing Hope, benefiting Chicago-based nonprofits. The program, made possible by the Grubhub Community Fund*, will direct up to $1 million in grant funding to organizations providing access to food and meal services. We’ll open up the application period for interested nonprofits in early October.
More nutritious, made-from-scratch meals distributed through the Food Depository’s expanded prepared meal programs. We are partnering with the Food Depository to aid in the expansion of their prepared meals program. These meals support Chicago families, older adults, people with disabilities and individuals with medically tailored diets. In early 2024, the Food Depository will open an expanded facility with eventual plans to prepare, source and distribute up to 10,000 meals per day. The partnership will also support the Food Depository’s work with food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters as they meet elevated demand for food assistance.

This past year, the Grubhub Government Relations team has continued efforts to advance the implementation of the Food Donation Improvement Act and specific policy recommendations to address food insecurity within the Farm Bill.
FOSTER ANNOUNCES $1 MILLION USDA FOREST SERVICE AWARD FOR AURORA
Aurora, IL – Recently, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) announced that the City of Aurora will receive a funding award through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service’s Urban and Community Forestry Program totaling $1,000,000. Made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act passed by Congress last year, the funding is designed to provide direct federal support to local communities for urban tree-planting and management. It will support the City of Aurora’s Urban Forest project, which includes development and implementation of an urban forest management plan, the planting of high-quality trees throughout the city, and enhanced workforce development to maintain the health of Aurora’s trees.

For several years, we have partnered with organizations like MEANS Database, Rescuing Leftover Cuisine, Tacombi Foundation, Union League Boys and Girls Club in Chicago to support various food rescue and hunger relief programs that directly support communities across the country. In 2022, we partnered to distribute over 500,00 meals and rescued over 2.8 million pounds of food through partnerships funded by the Grubhub Community Fund, and we are on track to grow our impact helping more individuals and families get access to the food and additional program services.

GIANNOULIAS ANNOUNCES ADDITIONS TO SKIP-THE-LINE PROGRAM

Additional appointment capacity added to accommodate driver’s license services Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced his office is implementing a number of additions to the Skip-the-Line program, which launched just three weeks ago.
From September 1 to September 21, Illinois Driver and Motor Vehicle facilities (DMVs) have seen more than 165,000 customers by appointment throughout the state. Customers with appointments are experiencing little to no wait times upon arrival at DMVs, which is a vast improvement compared to the hour-plus waits that Illinoisans had come to expect when visiting DMVs before adopting the Skip-the-Line program.
“The Skip-the-Line program has been functioning at a high level in the few weeks since its official launch,” Giannoulias said. “But we can still make improvements with targeted adjustments, and I am focused on implementing these to benefit all of our customers, especially our seniors.”
Giannoulias announced his office will implement the following additions, many of which are tailored specifically toward seniors:
Opening two “Senior Only” walk-in centers in the Chicago area. The two locations include the Evanston Civic Center, 2100 N. Ridge Road in Evanston and Seat Geek Stadium, 7000 S. Harlem Ave. in Bridgeview. Seniors at these locations will not need appointments, as these walk-in centers are specifically designed to meet their needs. By offering this targeted option, the office is prioritizing seniors without impacting customers at DMVs who have made appointments. Seniors still have the option to make a standard appointment at these and other locations.
Increasing the number of available appointments. Expanding scheduling availability will increase the number of in-car/road test appointments at Chicagoland DMVs by over 40%, or nearly 1,300 more per day.
Adding additional call center features to serve seniors aged 70 and older who require a road exam. These callers will be routed directly to operators who will provide on-the-spot information, schedule appointments or assist with online renewals. Seniors may call 800-2528980.

NYC designer Renee Cafaro presents plus size couture runway show at London Fashion Week
LONDON, PRNewswire -- This season at London Fashion Week, Renee Cafaro Atelier opened the day of shows for Oxford Fashion Studio’s Emerge show. Cafaro debuted her Spring/Summer 2024 collection, The Love Parade, named after a legendary music festival. It is a whimsical display of heart patterns, bright colors, and fun textures. The whole glamour of the outfit evokes 60s movie star style, but I gave it a psychedelic paint job and crystal-embellished it with a statement about self love. I then brought markers to the fitting and asked all of the models to add their own words to it…whatever statement they wish the world would know about being a woman in the plus size community because these models are all incredible activists and influencers in their own right and shouldn’t be treated like just hangers. Most were messages about ‘being enough’ or notes to
their younger selves and that made me cry!” the designer elaborated.
The 18-look collection progressed from daywear separates with surprising touches like matching a neon houndstooth slip dress with raincoat lining, heart cutouts and reversible skirts and maxi vests – and it transitioned all the way through to floral and sequined eveningwear. The psychedelic tee-shirt artwork was done by LA-based artist, Subconscious Junkyard and featured a beautiful curvy Lady Godiva-like figure, paired on the runway with her moto/miniskirt sets.
Plus supermodel of Project Runway fame, Liris Crosse, strutted down the runway to open the show in an acrylic raincloud-embellished raincoat to open the show, and once again in a jaw-dropping minidress that Cafaro dubbed, The Porcupine, for its thousands of Barbie pink sequin “spines” and crystals. Trinidadian-born model and influencer Sarah Hamel-Smith wore a groundbreaking creation by Cafaro, long gloves connected by a silk-flowered lattice shawl. “In all my years of obsessing over fashion history, I have yet to see a shawl with attached gloves and thought that would be so cool. CHIEF LARRY SNELLING CONFIRMED BY CITY COUNCIL AS CHICAGO POLICE DEPARTMENT SUPERINTENDENT
CHICAGO – Chief of the Bureau of Counterterrorism Larry Snelling was confirmed as the Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department by a unanimous vote from the Chicago City Council.
“I’m grateful for the City Council’s confirmation of Superintendent Larry Snelling today, marking a step forward in our journey to create a better, stronger, safer Chicago,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “Superintendent Snelling is a proven leader who has the experience and the respect of his peers to help ensure the safety and well-being of all city residents, and address the complex challenges we all face related to community safety.”

Snelling joined CPD in 1992 as a patrol officer in his home community of Englewood. This type of community-based policing experience remained core to his values and his experience as he ascended through the department.
After serving as a patrol officer in the 7th (Englewood) District, Superintendent Snelling was promoted to sergeant, serving in the 22nd (Morgan Park) District and Physical Skills and Operations sections for recruit training at the Police Academy. He returned to the 7th District as watch operations lieutenant before being promoted to
commander, and later, deputy chief of Area 2.
“It is a tremendous honor to answer the call to serve my hometown and the people of Chicago as Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department, and I thank the City Council for the overwhelming support,” said Superintendent Larry Snelling. “In order to continue to make progress as a department, we must embrace innovation and partnership, continue to strengthen morale, and go further in strengthening bonds of trust between police and community.

Superintendent Snelling was raised on the South Side of Chicago. He is a product of Chicago Public Schools, graduating from Englewood High School, and holds a bachelor’s degree in adult education from DePaul University.
Superintendent Snelling redesigned the Department’s current force training model around national best practices and constitutional policing and has testified as an expert in federal use of force cases. Additionally, he was a lead trainer for field force training for the 2012 Chicago NATO Summit.
“I have seen Superintendent Snelling grow throughout his career and I know he is prepared to lead this Department with a fresh vision and a sincere love for our city,” said Interim Superintendent Fred Waller. “It has been a privilege to lead
CPD during this time and I know I am leaving it in good hands with Superintendent Snelling.”
In 2022, Superintendent Snelling was promoted to Chief of the Department’s Bureau of Counterterrorism, which coordinates with the Office of Emergency Management and Communication and other city agencies, as well as other local, county, state and federal emergency responders, to respond to city emergencies.

Promising Students Benefit From Commitment to Developing Diverse Talent

Event provides for skilled, high-potential MBA candidates from nation’s leading business schools to compete for $50,000 in scholarships
Competition conducted annually at National Black MBA Association’s conference and exposition
Talented MBA candidates from 20 of the country’s top business schools competed for $50,000 in scholarships in the 2023 National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) Graduate Student Case Competition, sponsored by Stellantis.
The NBMBAA/Stellantis Graduate Case Competition is an annual event that gives high-potential graduate students an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and problem-solving skills in a formal competition.
The competition is held each year as part of the NBMBAA’s annual conference and exposition. This year, the Graduate Case Competition was held Sept. 13-14 in Philadelphia, and winning teams were announced Sept. 15.

Stellantis has been the exclusive sponsor of the Graduate Case Competition since 1995, with nearly 5,000 students participating over the years.
During the competition, teams are given a business case from which they develop solutions. Each student team then prepares and presents its case to a panel of experienced business executives. Teams are judged on their analysis of the case, the feasibility of their recommendations and the quality of their presentations.
For the 2023 NBMBAA Business Case, students were tasked to represent a consulting firm that will develop a U.S. marketing strategy that builds awareness, vehicle-buying consideration, long-term brand affinity and loyalty among Black consumers for Dodge, one of the iconic brands in the Stellantis portfolio.
This year, the students from Clark Atlanta University took home the first-place trophy as national champions and $25,000 in scholarships.
The second- and third-place teams represented Vanderbilt University and Auburn University, earning $15,000 and $10,000 in scholarships, respectively.
