The deadline for the Chicago United for Equity 2024 Fellowship application is approaching soon. Now in its sixth year, the CUE Fellowship focuses on enhancing local leaders’ understanding, tools, and skill sets to build equity across Chicago. The program has mobilized nearly 200 leaders across various sectors, harnessing their collective power and civic love to enact transformational change. The CUE Fellowship is a year-long program that brings together 15-20 leaders across identities, neighborhoods, and perspectives in government, media, research, storytelling, organizing, advocacy, and philanthropy, strengthening their racial equity practice. CUE Fellows are leaders, innovators, disruptors, and healers of all different kinds. We look for Fellows to come into this work with: 1. Creativity: The ability to imagine, create and collectively envision a better future. 2. Strength: Possess a strong foundation in racial equity with an understanding that transformation work is rooted in the collective. 3. Commitment: Building relationships by sharing the work and moving at the pace of trust. 4. Courage: Putting values into action to challenge systems that have brought us to this point. 5. Connection: Affiliated with an organization that believes in and is committed to equity work and transformational change. Fellows are expected to define a Racial Equity Project that redesigns a structure, policy or practice through a racial equity lens. The deadline is Monday, Dec. 18. A BETTER CHICAGO TARGETS SUCCESSFUL YOUTH INVESTMENT AND OUTCOMES THROUGH NEWLY RELEASED YOUTH OPPORTUNITY DASHBOARD
A Better Chicago released the Youth Opportunity Dashboard, a first of its kind tool in Chicago, that will provide city leaders, philanthropists, and youth advocates with a comprehensive and easy to use data tool that provides guidance on how young people are faring – and what resources are needed to ensure they are on a the right track for a bright future. Using information that is publicly available from multiple city, state and national resources, A Better Chicago then compiled the data sets and organized them against six key cradle to career milestones that are among the most determinative in projecting a child’s future. The dashboard provides a district-level snapshot of how young people are measuring up to a series of 26 indicators that indicate progress toward the six life milestones. Including the district-level specificity was particularly important to policymakers and hyper local advocacy organizations who focus on specific neighborhoods. The six milestones included in the dashboard align with the Obama Foundation’s My Brother’s Keeper Alliance which uses a well-researched framework of six milestones, which are: 1. Entering school ready to learn 2. Meeting benchmarks in reading and math 3. Graduating from high school ready for college and career 4. Completing postsecondary education or training 5. Successfully entering the workforce 6. Keeping youth on track and giving them second chances The Youth Opportunity Dashboard is being launched at a critical time for local youth, on the heels of a pandemic that erased important educational gains Chicago youth experienced before the pandemic, and amid significant changes within the education landscape in Chicago including: new leadership in the City, a move to an elected, 21-person school board and significant enrollment declines at CPS. A Better Chicago reviewed similar models across the country to help shape the dashboard, looking for models that resulted in deeper collaboration across policy, philanthropy, nonprofit and academia

One of the lessons Muhammad taught the children was about food, and in it she told them about the importance of the navy bean to Nation of Islam followers. In the beginning, she made bean pies, bean soup and bean salad. She found the pies and the soup were a hit. People recommended that Muhammad start a business making the pies. At the time, she wasn’t really thinking of it that way, but she was selling the pies as a fundraiser for the daycare, Your Childcare, NFP. The pies were sold at vendor events and in restaurants. Imani’s Original Bean Pies also has a brick-andmortar space at 2423 E. 75th St., inside Quarry Event Space. Selling the bean pies was a great way to show the children how to make and manufacture their own products. In 2014, Imani’s Original Bean Pies became available in Pete’s Fresh Market stores. Eventually, it was sold in Whole Foods and Treasure Island grocery stores. Now, those same children who were learning about the navy bean and how to make bean pies are young adults and they still help with the making and selling of the pies. Muhammad’s oldest daughter is the Vice President of Finance for Imani’s Original Bean Pies. Muhammad’s daughter has been able to see the ups and downs of running a business, but she has also learned how to be a problem solver and other things that are important in running a business.
The nonprofit has been renamed Imani Cares and the young people who participate learn entrepreneurship and life skills during their time in the program. “I’m just happy that many of the young people that helped to build Imani’s Original Bean Pies are now giving back and helping to grow the company and helping the youth that are up and coming now,” Muhammad said. Imani’s Original Bean Pies have become very popular and have been named some of the best pies in the city. Muhammad is happy and thankful that people like the pies so much. “We’ve made it a comfort, homemade food. We put a lot of love into what we’re doing. We love the root of where the bean pie even came from. It’s just been a pure walk of faith and love for us. We put our all behind this,” she said. Since Imani’s Original Bean Pies moved to its 75th St. location, it also has started to sell soups. Muhammad wants to make comfort, homemade food for the people. Currently, there are five young people working who are part of the Imani Cares program. Muhammad is also shining a spotlight on the young people who have come through the program. She wants it to be a project that lets young people see they can contribute to something positive to the community. She called those hard working young people an asset to their community. McDonald’s Relaunches Grant Program to Benefit Chicago-Based Youth Organizations McDonald’s has served up special moments that feed and foster communities all across the world for decades. Amidst a global footprint, the community of Chicago will always hold a special place, with our roots in the community dating back to 1955. It’s why now, as one of the largest employers headquartered in the Second City, we’re continuing to support Chicago’s neighborhood organizations. In 2022, we introduced a Chicago Community Impact Grants Program in partnership with The Chicago Community Trust, investing in grants to neighborhood organizations advancing youth opportunities. Take a look at the impact made through McDonald’s grants to-date across youth-serving organizations over the past year: Grant partners across Chicago reached 54,087 youth ages 16-24, with 13,464 youth participating in programming through the funding support. Youth pursued career and educational pathways while receiving counseling, mentoring and financial literacy education. Grant partners provided 21,415 hours of coaching and mentoring, building 1,493 young people’s confidence, skills, and networks. McDonald’s grants also funded organizations connecting 6,834 youth to workforce development and training in fields, such as green energy, banking, healthcare, and culinary arts. To further the impact of McDonald’s grantmaking in
communities, 1,430 McDonald’s volunteers engaged with youth at the funded organizations through 4,995 hours of service. CHICAGO – Lifeline Theatre’s 3rd annual adaptation workshop is accepting submissions from writers of color through December 17. The workshop offers Lifeline’s expertise in literary adaptation to support playwrights/writers of color (BIPOC) seeking to adapt for the stage. The workshops will culminate in public readings and the potential to be included in future Lifeline seasons.
SUBMISSIONS
Submissions should outline the writer’s intent to develop a stage adaptation of a book or other literary work (e.g., short story, article, memoir, tale, poem, etc.). Proposals can be for traditional adaptations or “inspired by” approaches where the literature serves as a jumping off point, but the source material should be in the public domain. Only one proposal per writer will be accepted. Interested individuals are asked to complete the submission form and upload their script by the submission deadline of December 17. If chosen, writers will receive: A $500 stipend; A process-oriented, writer-focused, developmental experience; A director and a dramaturg; Regular readings of new or rewritten material with feedback from experienced Lifeline ensemble members and playwright-invited artists; Administrative and casting support; A final reading for an invited audience. “We are looking forward to supporting and serving the desires and needs of our selected playwrights,” shares Lifeline Artistic Director Ilesa Duncan. “Our
ensemble members will be available to actively coach, guide, and facilitate writers. Playwrights will also have the freedom to choose the frequency, level, and style of feedback they prefer from our team as well. HUNTER APPOINTED TO MEDICAID MANAGED CARE OVERSIGHT COMMISSION
SPRINGFIELD — State Senator Mattie Hunter has been appointed co-chair of the state’s Medicaid Managed Care Oversight Commission to ensure Medicaid beneficiaries receive high-quality and affordable care. “Medicaid is a vital lifeline for many Illinoisans that provides access to essential health care services,” said Hunter (D-Chicago). “This commission will play a critical role in addressing systemic challenges, upholding the integrity of the program and promoting equitable health care access for all Medicaid beneficiaries.” With Hunter’s leadership, the Medicaid Managed Care Oversight Commission was established through the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus’ Health and Human Services Pillar in 2021. The commission is tasked with evaluating the effectiveness of the state’s Medicaid program including reviewing health outcome data and diversity contracting goals, expanding care coordination with a focus on social determinants of health, and assessing culturally competent services. The panel will submit an annual report of its findings and recommendations to the General Assembly.
BELT HIGHLIGHTS JARROT MANSION STATE HISTORIC SITE TOURS
CAHOKIA – State Senator Christopher Belt is encouraging families to take a tour of the Jarrot Mansion State Historic Site on Saturday to see the home decorated for the holidays and learn the story of St. Nicholas. “The Jarrot Mansion is a beautiful home, and there’s no better way to see it than when it’s decorated for the holidays,” said Belt (D-Swansea). “This is a great chance to visit the historic site and help children get excited for Christmas.” St. Nicholas will visit Jarrot Mansion to greet families and share treats with children amid candlelight and traditional holiday decorations. The site is usually open by appointment only, but it will be open for free tours from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 2. Visitors are encouraged to donate a nonperishable food item for families in need. All donations will be distributed to Cahokia food pantries. The mansion, located at 124 E. First St. in Cahokia, was built around 1810 by merchant Nicholas Jarrot, one of many French settlers who prospered in early Illinois. His home is one of the oldest brick buildings in Illinois. JOYCE ENCOURAGES RESIDENTS TO WRITE HOLIDAY LETTERS FOR ILLINOIS VETERANS
KANKAKEE — During this holiday season, State Senator Patrick Joyce is encouraging people to write uplifting notes to veterans as part of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs 2023 Operation Rising Spirit campaign. “It is the little notes and gestures like this that help uplift our veterans during the holiday season,” said Joyce (D-Essex). “This campaign continues to provide our former service members with comfort and a sense of appreciation this time of year.” Operation Rising Spirit launched in 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic to support residents who were unable to visit friends and family. The campaign was successful in encouraging veterans and facilitated their connection with the community. During the 2022 holiday season, IDVA distributed over 5,000 letters to veterans in the state’s care. “I encourage all individuals and organizations to participate in this year’s campaign so we can provide our veterans with joy and support,” said Joyce. To participate, people can mail letters directly to IDVA, or submit on the IDVA website. Letters will be divided equally between the state’s five veterans’ homes. Gov. Pritzker Celebrates Completion of I-280 Over Mississippi River in Quad Cities ROCK ISLAND— Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) were joined by local officials and community leaders to announce the completion of a multiyear project to install a new deck on the Interstate 280 Sgt. John F. Baker Jr. Mississippi River Bridge in Rock Island County, an improvement that will result in a smoother, safer ride on one of the state’s key travel corridors. Made possible by Gov. Pritzker’s historic, bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital program and a partnership with Iowa, the project included patching and resurfacing east of the bridge for a combined investment of $65.7 million. “This is exactly what Rebuild Illinois, our state’s massive infrastructure modernization program, is all about: to make life better and easier for our people,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “When we make smart investments in the roadways that working families and businesses rely on, we’re constructing a better future for the entire region — one where parents and their children can commute with confidence and where new factories and distribution centers are choosing to locate in Illinois, so they can reliably ship their products across the nation.” The Baker Bridge opened in 1973 and today carries more than 28,000 vehicles a day, almost 20% of which are trucks. The new deck is the first replacement since the bridge opened. A $49.7 million project began in 2021 with the demolition and replacement of the westbound bridge deck, followed by the eastbound bridge deck in 2022. The final stage of the project, which patched and resurfaced I-280 from the bridge to the Illinois 92 interchange, was combined with another $16 million improvement that
extended the work from the Illinois 92 interchange to east of the Milan Beltway. Additional work included bridge painting and lighting upgrades at Illinois 92. The Iowa Department of Transportation contributed $18.9 million to the bridge improvements. The combined projects improved more than 6.5 miles of I-280 through the Illinois communities of Coal Valley, Moline, Milan, and Rock Island. The interstate also serves the Quad City International Airport, which is estimated to generate almost $650 million in economic impact annually and supports nearly 4,400 jobs, according to an IDOT analysis of the state’s airports. “These investments in I-280 will extend the life of another critical border bridge and strengthen the robust multimodal infrastructure system in the Quad Cities,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “I’m proud that we could make these improvements with our partners in Iowa. Working together, we have improved safety, mobility, and commerce between our two states and throughout the Midwest.” “I am grateful for the leaders that prioritized this funding and helped make this bridge a reality,” said State Sen. Mike Halpin (D-Rock Island). “But I want to offer a special ‘thank you’ to the skilled tradesmen and women that built this bridge from the riverbed up. I’m pleased that this project not only creates jobs and makes the roadway safer, but also helps our economy grow,” said Mike Thoms, Rock Island Mayor. “Moline is thankful for each and every investment in its critical infrastructure as well as investments in our regional infrastructure,” said Mayor Sangeetha Rayapati of Moline. “Support from Springfield is critical in our no-state region and we appreciate it.” The I-280 repairs were one of several made possible by Rebuild Illinois this construction season in the Illinois Quad Cities, including: $7 million to patch and resurface Illinois 5 (John Deere Road) in Moline between 16th and 35th streets as well as a $1.3 million project completed in September to patch and resurface Illinois 92 from Turkey Hollow Road to Illinois 192. Across the state, Rebuild Illinois is investing a total of $33.2 billion over six years, creating jobs and promoting economic growth. Rebuild Illinois is not only the largest capital program in state history, but also the first that touches all modes of transportation: roads and bridges, transit, waterways, freight and passenger rail, aviation, and bicycle and pedestrian accommodations. Conducted and analyzed by Next Street, the research reveals that while midsize businesses generate significant revenue nationally and locally, there is an opportunity to better support them as they face headwinds such as increasing competition, slowing revenue growth and an uncertain economic outlook. The report details the U.S. midsize business: • Market: There are approximately 300,000 midsize businesses across the U.S. that generate $13 trillion in annual revenue and employ more than 40 million people. • Importance: These businesses account for 33% of annual revenue generated and 30% of all private sector employment in the country, despite representing only 5% of the total number of national employer businesses. • Discrepancy: Diverse-owned businesses represent roughly 30% of the middle market, but generate only about 20% of the total market revenue. • Opportunity: Closing this gap could generate an additional $1.3 trillion in annual revenue, presenting a meaningful opportunity to support national economic health and prosperity. “Midsize businesses are critical to the health of our economy and communities,” said Terry Hill, Co-Head of Emerging Middle Market, JPMorgan Chase Commercial Banking. “They create millions of jobs, as well as the products and services that power our day-to-day lives. Tips to Protect Yourself From Text Message Cyberattacks
(StatePoint) Every day, cybercriminals create new methods of obtaining private financial information from unsuspecting individuals, most commonly employing tactics like emailing strangers and convincing them to either share personal information or take an action that compromises their systems and devices. Known as “phishing,” these cybercrime attempts can also come by way of short message service (SMS) or text messaging, and when they do, it’s called “smishing.”

Scammers use smishing to prompt victims to click on internet links or send classified or personal information through texts and other messaging apps, making individuals vulnerable to identity theft and even extortion. However, understanding their methods can help you protect yourself. Here’s what to know: Attacks Are Getting More Sophisticated Cybercriminals often use a tactic called spoofing, where they impersonate a known sender or transmit messages from a legitimate number. Even if you know the sender, it’s still important to verify the message’s legitimacy before responding, opening an attachment, or clicking on a link that could potentially compromise your device. Cybercriminals also share stolen credentials and personal information more readily now and work in gangs, ultimately amplifying the threat. Through social engineering of your publicly available infor-
mation — often gleaned from social media — and private data procured illicitly, scammers are able to craft text messages specifically designed to lower your defenses. This means, communication may look like it’s being sent from a known person or number, possibly making reference to shared knowledge. Fraudsters may apply a sense of urgency or other scare tactic that prompts you to react quickly instead of taking the time to scrutinize a request.

Additionally, the ever-growing capabilities of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools have made it easier for scammers to develop smishing attempts that closely mirror conversation, making it simpler and more affordable to distribute cyberattacks successfully to a large audience.
4. If the message appears to come from a familiar company, contact them on a different channel to confirm legitimacy.
“Whereas previous smishing and phishing messages often didn’t make sense, as generative AI advances, these messages contain fewer grammatical or spelling mistakes. As a result, users are less able to distinguish them from legitimate communications,” says Raina Kanakis, a security specialist with PNC’s Global Security Fusion Center. Simple Precautions Can Mitigate Risk Vigilance is key, especially as attacks become more sophisticated. One way to verify senders’ identities is by cross-checking short codes — the five- or six-digit number used by companies to deliver text messages to your phone. Each of these unique codes is used for certain purposes — to transmit card activity alerts, for instance.
1. If you are not expecting the message, proceed with caution. 2. Do not immediately respond. 3. Do not click on any links within a text message. Navigate to the URL using a different means to validate it.
5. Getting a text and subsequent call does not increase legitimacy. Hang up and call the company or financial institution directly using a known telephone number. 6. Screenshot and send any suspicious messages appearing to come from a company to them to verify and alert. 7. To report smishing to all mobile telecom carriers, screenshot and send the message to 7726. For added protection, use the “Report Junk” feature on your mobile carrier’s system. 8.
