Cook County Department of Public Health Urges Suburban Cook County to Take COVID Precautions During the Holiday Season BRIDGEVIEW – Although COVID-19 hospital admissions in suburban Cook County continue to be low, they have almost doubled since the beginning of November; and emergency room visits associated with COVID have been trending upward since early October. That is why Cook County Department of Public Health is urging residents to take precautions when gathering with their families and friends for the holidays. “We want to encourage Cook County residents to remain vigilant during this holiday season,” said Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck, chief operating officer of Cook County Department of Public Health. “The single most important way to protect yourself and your families from COVID, flu, and RSV is to stay up to date with recommended vaccinations. It’s science at work. It’s safe. It’s proven. And it works.” According to Cook County Department of Public Health data for the week ending Nov. 25, there are seven COVID-19 hospital admissions for every 100,000 residents of suburban Cook County. Most admissions are among those age 65 and older.

The presence of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater is an early indicator of COVID-19 activity. Wastewater viral concentrations are currently at the highest levels seen so far this year, indicating ongoing community transmission. As of Dec. 1, 10% of Cook County residents have received the 2023-2024 updated annual COVID-19 vaccine. Everyone 6 months and older should get updated COVID-19 and flu vaccines each year. Immunization for RSV is recommended for infants; and the RSV vaccine is recommended for pregnant women and adults 60 years and older. Adults can receive the RSV, COVID-19, and flu vaccines at the same time. In addition to staying up to date on all recommended vaccinations, Cook County Department of Public Health recommends residents take the following precautions when gathering during the holidays: Test for COVID-19 before attending a family or public event. Currently, services are housed in three separate agencies—the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), the Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS), and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). The Transition Advisory Committee will help inform and provide feedback to the State as it prepares for the transition to a new single agency. This work builds on Governor Pritzker’s commitment to make Illinois the best state in the nation for families raising young children, with the nation’s best early childhood education and care system. Education expert Ann Whalen serves as Early Childhood Transition Director, working out of ISBE, and in close collaboration with state agencies and the Governor’s office. Prior to taking on this role, Ann served as the Director of Policy for Advance Illinois, where she worked on education advocacy issues including addressing Illinois’ teacher shortage, the improved use of data to drive decision-making, social-and-emotional learning, education funding, and more. She has an extensive background in education policy and implementation at the local, state, and federal levels. Previously, Ann was Deputy Chief Education Officer at Chicago Public Schools. She holds a BA in Political Science from Stanford University. The committee will be chaired by Bela Moté, who will work closely with Director Whalen to lead the transition. SHERIFF DART, ILLINOIS SECRETARY OF STATE GIANNOULIAS PARTNER TO PROVIDE STATE ID CARDS TO INDIVIDUALS LEAVING COOK COUNTY JAIL Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart and Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced today a partnership to provide State Identification Cards for individuals leaving Cook County Jail. The partnership is the first of its kind for a county jail. Government issued IDs are critical for enrolling in educational programs, onboarding for jobs as well as obtaining housing and government benefits. Individuals in custody may have lost their ID cards or they may have expired while in custody, and they may face challenges in attempting to renew them after returning to the community. “We know that people who have a safe place to live, are receiving services they need, and are employed are less likely to reoffend,” Sheriff Dart said. “Having a government-issued ID is the first step to obtaining those things. So, this initiative not only helps people with their individual needs but also helps public safety.” The program is initially working with individuals who either have previously applied for a State ID card or driver’s license, or have access to documents, such as birth certificates and social security cards, to apply for the first time. The program will gradually expand to provide IDs to everyone in Cook County Jail custody. “Providing individuals who have completed their sentences with essential resources and tools upon their release increases their chances to successfully re-enter society, become self-sufficient and rebuild their lives,” Secretary Giannoulias said. “A valid state ID will help them with basic needs like locating housing, securing a job, opening a bank account, enrolling in assistance programs, and attaining reliable transportation. Fulfilling these basic needs reduces recidivism, saves taxpayer money, and makes our communities stronger.” Sheriff ’s Office staff will work with the interested participants to complete the application forms and take photographs. If necessary, Sheriff ’s Office staff can also help first-time applicants with accessing vital documents they already have such as birth certificates or social security cards. The collected information will be sent electronically via a secure transfer to the Secretary of State’s Office. After the Secretary of State’s Office staff determines applicants have met the requirements for an ID card, they will be mailed to their residences. Prior to the partnership with the Secretary of State’s Office, Cook County Jail worked with the Chicago City Clerk’s Office to provide municipal ID cards for individuals in custody who were Chicago residents. The Secretary of State’s Office launched a similar program in 2021 for returning residents released from Illinois Department of Corrections custody, issuing more than 2,100 ID cards to program participants to date.

Winter Woes! New Survey Finds Most Americans Dread Heating Bills

(StatePoint) From using a hairdryer to warm up their sheets to cuddling with their pet, Americans will do some crafty things to stay warm in the winter—especially if it means they can avoid turning up their thermostat. A new survey conducted by Duck brand, which offers products that provide simple, imaginative and helpful solutions for a variety of tasks around the home, finds out why people go to such lengths. According to the research, 61% of people dread receiving their heating bill in the winter. While the average monthly heating bill hovers between $100 to $200, respondents say the highest bill they’ve received in recent years ranges from $200 to $300, and 76% of people say they have experienced an increase in their bill over the past five years.

“It may seem like the first thing people would do if they’re cold is to turn up their thermostat, but that’s not always the case,” says Randi Bujnovsky, product manager for Weatherization at Shurtape Technologies, LLC, the company that markets the Duck brand. “As it turns out, 80% of Americans say they have turned down their thermostat to save money in the winter.” The chilly temperatures this time of year clearly have an impact on people’s daily habits and even their sleep.
