Multiple gang shootings and homicides, social economic disparities and failing schools continue to plague this South Side neighborhood, but like a Phoenix rising from the ashes Englewood, native Arnett Faulkner is proof there is still good coming out of and going back into this community. n

After the recession of 2008, FCHN began to see an overflow of men, women and children and now feeds and clothes more than 1,000 people a week through

Crack Down on Drug-Impaired Drivers
SPRINGFIELD-The Governor’s Highway Safety Association and the Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility has awarded the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) a special grant to conduct ten Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) classes statewide. The ARIDE program trains law enforcement officers to detect impairment caused by more than just alcohol. “This funding will greatly increase law enforcement’s ability to spot drug-impaired driving and, in turn, reduce instances of crashes and fatalities caused by impaired driving on our roads,” said Priscilla Tobias, director of IDOT’s Office of Program Development and the Governor’s Highway Safety Representative from Illinois.

The Spirit of Entrepreneurship Comes Alive in Hyde Park... Continued from Page 1
Now residing in Hyde Park, the 52-yearold cancer survivor left her corporate career in medical device sales to take on life as an entrepreneur. “It’s hard to quit something you’re used to, to do something you believe in,” she said. That which was born out of necessity, has become a burgeoning skin care company that will have products on the shelves this summer in two of the newest Whole Foods locations, Englewood and Hyde Park. Faulkner is the president and CEO of AHF Body Chemistry which was started as a solution to a problem. Her now 10-year-old son was born with severe eczema, she too has the condition, but as an infant his skin was more sensitive. She searched for lotions and creams that could bring him some relief and she wanted to avoid chemical based products. “I was afraid of putting things on his skin that would cause inflammation,” she said. COMMENTARY
High-Performing Schools are the Best Gateway to Success By Brian L. Pauling
As the school year winds down, one can’t help but think of graduations and where and how students will embark upon the next phase of their lives. Unfortunately, the opportunities for far too many will be limited because of disparities in graduation rates and in opportunities for students at high-performing schools compared with their counterparts at low-performing schools. Although U.S. high school graduation rates have significantly improved, U.S. Department of Education statistics show that African-American and Hispanic/Latino students are still graduating 5 to 10 points behind the national average. Further, students from low-income families are graduating at a rate that’s 14.4 percentage points below that of their Brian L. Pauling peers from wealthier backgrounds. For students to be competitive in post-secondary education and career, they have to be properly prepared. Whether competing for admission to college or entering a career, the student graduating from the highperforming school invariably has the advantage over the one from the low-performing school. And although each may have a diploma in hand, the student from a low-performing school will more times than not require remedial courses and start behind the curve when trying to achieve longterm success. 100 Black Men of America, Inc. strongly believes the remedy to this situation is advocating for and demanding high-performing schools for all students – and particularly African-American and poor students. We feel that high-performing public schools, whether traditional or charter, are the best gateway to higher education. Coupled with strong parental involvement, quality education options – ones that ensure every child has access to the high-performing school best suited for him or her – will help them achieve long-term career success. Sadly, many of the nation’s low-performing schools are in minority and
low-income neighborhoods. Far too many of these public schools have inadequate resources and their classrooms are overcrowded. They often lack the things higher-performing schools take for granted – experienced teachers, counselors, special education services, current-edition textbooks, and access to technology, to name a few – and their students suffer. When those conditions are allowed to continue, students’ paths can deviate from higher education and career to paths of overwhelming struggle, economic challenge and potentially prison. This is why we must implore our school administrators on the neighborhood, district, city, state and national levels to do their level best to make public education more equitable in every school. In a Washington Post article, former Education Secretary Arne Duncan called on cities and states to rethink their current incarceration practices and proposed funneling an estimated $15 billion in savings from incarcerations to substantially raise teacher pay in high-poverty schools. He reasoned that higher salaries could attract better teachers to low-performing schools where the help is most needed. “With a move like this, we’d not just make a bet on education over incarceration, we’d signal the beginning of a long-range effort to pay our nation’s teachers what they are worth,” Duncan said. “That sort of investment wouldn’t just make teachers and struggling communities feel more valued. It would have ripple effects on our economy and on our civic life.” He gets it. We want to make sure everybody else gets it as well. Highperforming schools are the best gateway to success. When our children have access to high-performing schools, it exponentially increases their chances to achieve their full potential. Brian L. Pauling is president and CEO of 100 Black Men of America, Inc., a global nonprofit mentoring organization with more than 100 chapters reaching 125,000 youth in the United States, the United Kingdom and the Caribbean. Radio Shack Surrenders Uncashed Rebates Worth $140,000 SPRINGFIELD – Radio Shack will surrender $140,000 in uncashed rebates owed to more than 5,000 Illinois residents, state Treasurer Michael Frerichs said in a released statement. Frerichs pursued Radio Shack because rebates checks are unclaimed property if not paid out within five years. Returning unclaimed property is a role of the Treasurer’s Office. “Big Corporations should not use rebate promotions as a bait-and-switch scheme,” Frerichs said. “This settlement allows us to actively locate the people who were wronged and return their money to them.” Radio Shack agreed to the settlement after the Treasurer’s auditors determined that the electronics store chain and its rebate fulfillment provider, Global Fulfillment Services, a subsidiary of Minnesota’s Young America Corp., failed to report unclaimed rebate checks. Radio Shack had a contract with Global Fulfillment Services to process the rebate checks. In the event that an individual did not receive the rebate check or did not cash the check, Global Fulfillment Services kept the proceeds as revenue. That “leakage” was considered part of Global Fulfillment Services payment for processing the rebates on behalf of Radio Shack. Therefore, Radio Shack and Global Fulfillment Services retained the value of unclaimed rebates owed to Illinois residents. Doing so violates the Illinois Uniform Disposition of Unclaimed Property Act (765 ILCS 1025 et seq.) The amount of these Radio Shack unclaimed property rebates typically range from $20-$100. However, it could take weeks for the information to be properly recorded and entered into the unclaimed property records database. The database can be found at www. illinoistreasurer.gov under the I-Cash program.

WASHINGTON – For the third year, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is launching a Growth Accelerator Fund competition for accelerators and other entrepreneurial ecosystem models to compete for monetary prizes of $50,000 each, totaling $3.95 million. The application period is going on now until June 3. Information about the application process can be found at: www.sba.gov/accelerators or www.challenge.gov. “As we celebrate National Small Business Week this week, it is only fitting that we launch our third annual Growth Accelerator Fund competition to empower more of America’s small businesses,” said Mark Walsh, Associate Administrator for the Office of Investment and Innovation. “Accelerators provide valuable resources to potential startups: a physical infrastructure to work in their infancy, mentoring, business-plan assistance, networking, opportunities to obtain venture capital, and introductions to potential customers, partners and suppliers—all critical elements to ensuring that small businesses flourish and succeed. Last year’s competition was so successful, we’ve added more federal partners including our very own Office
of Native American Affairs and Office of Veterans Business Development to help bring more Native-American-owned, veteran-owned, women-owned and minority-owned small businesses into the fold.” New to this year’s competition, SBA is partnering with several other federal agencies -- National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Education (DoED) and Department of Agriculture (USDA) -- to provide additional prizes to accelerators that assist entrepreneurs with submitting proposals for the Small Business Innovation (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. SBA’s Office of Investment and Innovation (OII), with support from the Office of International Trade (OIT), is also partnering with the Inter-American Development Bank to provide prizes to U.S. accelerators that assist the African descendant start-up community in Latin America and the Caribbean. Special consideration will be given to these accelerator models which support womenowned or minority-owned small businesses. Similar to last year’s competition, several panels containing expert judges from the private and public sector with
collective experience in early stage investing, entrepreneurship, academia, start-ups and economic development will select the winners. The competition includes accelerators, incubators, co-working startup communities, shared tinker-spaces or other models. The panel will give particular attention to applicants that fill geographic gaps in the accelerator and entrepreneurial ecosystem space. Through this competition, the SBA is looking to support the development of accelerators and their support of startups in parts of the country where there are fewer conventional sources of access to capital (i.e., venture capital and other investors). In addition, the SBA is also seeking accelerators headed by women and those who support them or other underrepresented groups, 44 percent of last year’s accelerator winners were run by women and 41 percent were classified as underrepresented groups. Special consideration will be given to manufacturing accelerator models and models which support the White House Power Initiative during this year’s competition, because they are critical to job growth and strengthening the nation’s economy.
Florida Memorial University (FMU) and the National Black MBA Association® (NBMBAA) recently entered into a groundbreaking agreement that will develop and strengthen career pathways for undergraduate and graduate business students. The partnership also aims to enhance the quality of the educational experiences, internship placements and job opportunities for deserving students enrolled at FMU. This innovative collaboration was launched following a panel discussion hosted by both FMU and NBMBAA called, Access to the Dream: Celebrating the Past: Preparing for the Future. Students learned valuable tips and takeaways to help guide their transition from school to work as entrepreneurs and global leaders. FMU alumni also shared their career success secrets on how they have excelled in their respective fields. The partnership will allow for FMU students to apply for NBMBAA scholarships, that will be matched by FMU. Students will also have access to NBMBAA internships opportunities and their annual conference.

“Someone that hears the voice of God. Throughout the Word, every prophet had a message. I believe that people like Dr. Martin Luther King had a message. He was a prophet in his own right. He had a dream that one day unity would happen, that discrimination would stop. Of course, we are still fighting for that, but he saw a day that is not here yet. Prophets prepare people for a day that is coming. It is in my heart to prepare the people for what God is saying for this time…

Jerome Alley, President of William Howard Taft University, announced recently that the University has received approval from its accrediting agency to commence offering a doctorate program with a concentration in charter school administration. It is believed to presently be the only such program in the United States. The online Doctor of Education (with a concentration in Charter School Administration) Program is a practical, directed independent study program which emphasizes course work in educational leadership and management with a focus on charter school operations. Barry P. Resnick, Dean of Taft’s Graduate School of Education, said “Charter Schools are increasing in number and size. With the growing dissatisfaction of public school education in general, their numbers are expected to exponentially increase in the next decade. The responsibilities of managing a charter school are dramatically different than administering a regular public school. Charter school administrators require many of the same skills as small business owners – skills not taught in traditional Ed.D. Programs.” Alley commented that in setting tuition levels, “the University recognized the fact that most charter schools operate on very tight budgets.” Therefore, for students enrolling on or before August 1, 2016 total tuition for the program can be less than $9,000. All coursework is performed 100% online with no residency requirements.

A special guest at this year’s race is baseball great and two-time World Series champion Ken Griffey Sr., a prostate cancer survivor who is educating men about the symptoms of advanced prostate cancer and the importance of awareness. “When my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I began to truly understand how men and their families were fighting this disease and how the Run/Walk event was just as much about uplifting people as it was about raising awareness,” said Marlon Longid, a long-time ZERO Run/Walk participant in Chicago who lends his musical skills to the race as a performer. “One of my fondest memories is seeing my dad waiting for my sister and I at the finish line. Here was a man suffering through one of the most difficult times in his life and he was inspiring the runners of our group with his smile, charm, and positive attitude.” Marlon Longid has been involved with the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk – Chicago for
six years. After his uncle Frank and father-in-law Jim were diagnosed with the disease, Marlon dedicated himself to getting more involved. In 2012, his father Norman was diagnosed with prostate cancer and in his honor Marlon and his family formed “Stormin’ Norman’s Runners” for the race in 2013. Marlon believes that men like his uncle, father-in-law, and his father are the heart and soul of the Run/Walk. “I’m always reenergized by the stories that I hear from the countless survivors and family members that participate in this amazing event. It’s an opportunity to not only give back to the brave people that are currently affected by this disease, but to also honor those who have gone before us,” said Marlon. “I have since lost my dad, only two years after his initial diagnosis, but I return every year to remember him and his big smile at the finish line.” Funds raised for this year’s Run/Walk event will provide support locally to a ZERO’s partner organization, US Too International, an nonprofit organization that provides education and support to prostate cancer patients and their families in local communities. Additionally, funds will go toward national efforts to provide research for new treatments, patient support resources, and to educate men and families about prostate cancer. Growing Popularity of Black Superheroes Creates Opportunities for Comic Book Investors Marvel Comic’s Black Panther—the first black comic book superhero, born in the 1960s—made his big screen debut this past week in the much-anticipated movie, Captain America: Civil War. It’s culturally significant, but that’s not all. For comic book collectors, the growing interest in black superheroes opens doors for investors, too. “When interest in a character rises, comic book values do, too,” says Vincent Zurzolo, co-owner of Metropolis Collectibles, the world’s largest vintage comic book dealership, and ComicConnect.com, its online auction site. Take The Black Panther’s first appearance in Fantastic Four #52 in 1966. (First appearances are typically the most valuable comics in a series.) In 2012, a 9.8 graded copy of Fantastic Four #52 sold for $19,200. In 2016, a similar copy sold for $83,650—a 435% increase in value. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, The Black Panther character was born as T’Challa, the prince of Wakanda, a technologically-advanced country. He takes on the hero role when his father, the king, is killed. Then there’s Luke Cage, a favorite of actor Nicholas Cage, who adopted his surname. This black superhero, who first appeared in Marvel’s Hero for Hire #1 in 1972, boasts superhuman strength and unbreakable skin. Last year, he was featured on the Netflix series Jessica Jones. This fall, he’ll headline his own series. In 2011, a 9.8 graded copy of Hero for Hire #1 sold for

The three men appear at the 1st annual Department of Youth and Community Development NYC Youth Comic Con where they reviewed over 100 comic book ideas from NYC youth. $2,766. In 2014, one sold for $6,100. But earlier this year, a similarly graded copy sold for $24,000, a whopping 867% increase in 5 years. “The interest is industry wide,” notes Stephen Fishler, coowner of Metropolis/ComicConnect, pointing out the upcoming reboot of Milestone Comics, a DC imprint created by AfricanAmerican artists and writers in 1993. The best known are Hardware, Icon and Static. In 2014, Hip hop icon Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of Run DMC, launched his own comic book imprint, Darryl Makes Comics. His graphic novel series, DMC, features McDaniels as a contemporary
superhero—complete with trademark Adidas and fedora— confronting evil in 1985 New York City. Darryl Makes Comics is an independent comic book imprint and includes collaborator and Editor-in-Chief Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, and music executive Riggs Morales. Darryl Makes Comics is dedicated to the idea that every walk of life has heroes and stories worth telling. “Hip hop was always based on creativity,” DMC says, “So what we’re trying to do with this comic book is not trying to create anything that’s new; we’re just going to show the world what’s already there… the beauty and the creativity of it.” For more information about McDaniels’ graphic novel series, DMC, visit (http://www.dmc-comics.com),

LIVING Prom 101: Three Fun Facts for the Big Dance (StatePoint) If you remember your own prom like it was yester day, you may be sur prised to learn that kids today are celebrating the big dance differently these days. Here are three major ways the big dance has changed: • Teens are no longer simply asking their dates to attend the dance with them. Elaborate “promposals” include air plane banner flyovers and giant duct tape posters. • Last year, the average household spent $918 on prom, a price tag that’s skyrocketed over the years. Girls are typically spending around $449 between a dress, acces sories, professional hair and nails, etc. And while guys generally spend less, they’re still shelling out an average of $282 on promrelated expens es. • With a look toward col
lege, which has increased in cost by 40 percent in the last decade, many teens are finding creative ways to save on prom expenses, such as wearing Duck Tape. The Duck brand Stuck at Prom Scholarship Contest encourages creative promgoers to design their own Duck Tape prom wear for the chance to win college scholarships. Annually, the contest offers more than $50,000 in scholar ship dollars and has attracted more than 7,000 entrants over the last 15 years. For more information about the contest, visit www.stuck atprom.com. While much has changed about prom, music, dancing and lifelong memories are still essential parts of the fun.

LIVING Tips to Be More Productive (StatePoint) Juggling work, family, friends and everything in between is no easy feat. But there are many ways to increase your productivity without working harder or get ting more stressed. Small business owners are true experts in this art, establishing routines and habits to be more efficient with time, money and resources. Here are some top tips recently shared by several small busi ness owners and bloggers as part of the #MakeMoreHappen campaign from Staples, that can help you become more productive at home and work. Get Tech Savvy Be willing to outsource certain tasks, like technical troubleshooting. If you’re not an IT specialist, solving such problems can be time consuming and headacheinducing. “Even small technical problems can take hours of frustration to fix, and most people don’t think about these issues until they have them, especially when it”s too late,” says Cassie Boorn of Maker Mentors and blogger at Design Aglow. “A smart solution is to set up a monthly sub

scription with a technical support hotline like Staples, so you can have instant access to help any time you need it.” DIY
Whether you’re dealing with pro fessional or personal affairs, doingityour self can often save money and time — from fixing things at home to creating the design elements of a business. “ create and design my own cards and then print them myself. I create a different card for each platform I’m sell ing on — the basic design is the same, but the name of the platform is at the top and I use a different color pallet to distinguish
Simplify Shopping Onestop shopping sprees at large retailers like Staples can help save time and money. These stores often offer lower prices on products, and shopping for many items at once online can help qual ify you for free shipping. Also, these types of retailers tend to fea ture their own store brand products for further savings. “Obviously, rationing pencils is not going to singlehandedly bring your business out of debt, but you’d be surprised at how quickly seem ingly minor expenses can accumulate,” says Nicole Thein of Uniquely Women. While Thein’s advice focuses on business tools, the same rationale applies to household sup plies and personal items. Making savvy consumer purchases can help you stretch your dollar. Use Life-Saving Apps These days, there are apps for everything. So
before hitting the panic button, see if there’s an app that can solve your problem quickly and on a budget. For example, designer and blogger Whitney English, founder of the planner Day Designer rec ommends Makr for those who need a logo fast. “It might be something you need for a wed ding, like a custom crest or a monogram or you might need an actual logo for your business,” says English. “Enter the Makr app. It’s the solution to all of those things, and then some.” Everyone can use more time, energy and money. Finding ways to stretch these precious resources can make you happier, healthier and more productive.
