THE 40TH ANNUAL UNCF CHICAGO WALK FOR EDUCATION RAISES

$104,857

CHICAGO – The 40th Annual UNCF Chicago Walk for Education held at Burnham Park recently raised more than $104K in funds that will help deserving students go to college. More than 500 supporters came out to the event, which had an atmosphere of camaraderie filled with unity, purpose, and hope.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle returned this year to serve as the Honorary Chair of the walk. Popular radio personalities, Ramonski Luv from OmniChannel and Trey White from WGCI-FM, kept the crowd engaged and uplifted as the event’s co-emcees.

The occasion’s significance was highlighted by Fred Mitchell, Vice President, Development Mid-Atlantic/Midwest Divisions UNCF, who spoke of the “profound impact of UNCF over the past 79 years.” He emphasized the organization’s “vital role in making possible a quality education for thousands of students,” thereby giving them the foundation and paving the way for their success in life and in their future careers.

The event allowed participants to select a 5K walk/run or a 10K bike/skate course, all while enjoying the scenic beauty of Burnham Park on the city’s South Side. Special moments included an inspiring program featuring guest speakers, incredible performances by the Jesse White Tumblers, and an energizing warm-up session led by Chicago native Miss Illinois 2022, Monica Niá Jones. Jones became the first black woman in 20 years to hold the title.

TeResa Gaddis, UNCF Chicago Development Director, in expressing her gratitude, said, “It was a privilege to have Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle return to helm the walk. Her commitment to fostering higher education for our future generations is commendable. A big thank you to every individual and organization that came out to show their support.”

The 2023 walk was supported by national sponsors Colgate and Lowe’s, with local sponsors and donations from Aetna, ALDI, American Airlines, BMO Harris, Chicago Defender, Comcast, Gift of Hope, Huntington Bank, Marquee Sports Network, McDonald’s, NBC 5 Chicago, PepsiCo, Telemundo, Top Ladies of Distinction, Urban Prep Academies, WGN-TV 9 and Wyn-Win Communications.

UNCF’s mission is to build a robust and nationally-recognized pipeline of underrepresented students who, because of UNCF support, become highly-qualified college graduates and to ensure that our network of member institutions is a respected model of best practice in moving students to and through college.

ILBCF awards Brain Trust on Health grants to medical professionals

Continued from page 1

The Brain Trust on Health is an interdisciplinary approach, with Black medical professionals, to take an in depth look at health policy and ways to transform health policy to improve health outcomes for Black Illinoisans.

Tiffany Hightower, Executive Director of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Foundation, said the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus’ Four Pillars to End Systemic Racism in Illinois inspired the programs ILBCF launched.

“When you look at the fourth pillar, which is Healthcare and Human Services, which was approved in January 2021, I started to dissect that pillar and look at it from the Foundation standpoint of what type of tangible initiatives could we create to really show how critically important the items in that pillar actually were,” Hightower said.

The Healthcare Pillar was introduced by State Senator Mattie Hunter and State Representative Camille Lilly. The Brain Trust on Health meets quarterly to look at how to ensure true transformation in the improvement of health outcomes for Black Illinoisans can really be accomplished through policy.

Zooming in further to Black representation in the medical field, the Foundation wanted to give 11 doctors across the state of Illinois who worked in marginalized communities $5,000 to pay down their medical school debt.

Hightower said there is an impediment to generational wealth in the healthcare sector because Black doctors do

not graduate at the same financial footing as other affinity groups.

“Although we know that $5,000 is not a lot, we looked at it as a way to bring light to this issue, but to also help, just a little bit,” she said, adding that when there is Black representation in the medical field, there should also be efforts made to support it and sustain it.

In 2022, ILBCF launched the application process for the grant awards for the medical professionals. And in September 2023, five Black medical professionals were awarded $5,000. Those medical professionals were Dr. Leslie Amonoo, MD, Dr. Annette Grotheer, MD, MPH, Dr. Carl Lambert, MD, FAAFP, Dr. Christopher Smyre, MD, MA and Dr. James Stinson MD, MS.

“They’re doing the work and they’re doing the work in Black communities,” Hightower said. “They’re really awesome.”

The doctors who received the grants will serve on the Brain Trust on Health, so they can be part of the solution making. They will help with the health initiative work for the Foundation.

ILBCF also visited Accra, Ghana in January 2023. During that visit, members of the delegation were told about the need for incubators. ILBCF partnered with Project C.U.R.E., a Chicago-based nonprofit organization, and were able to donate medical supplies to hospitals in Ghana.

APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN FOR GOLDEN APPLE’S SCHOLARS TEACHER PREPARATION PROGRAM

ILLINOIS -- Golden Apple, a non-profit committed to preparing, supporting and mentoring aspiring teachers, is now accepting applications for its Scholars program. Golden Apple seeks to provide a pathway for aspiring educators to enter the profession through this program to build the teacher pipeline that will fill crucial open teaching positions across the state.

Illinois faces an ongoing teacher shortage crisis, leading to classrooms lacking the highly-effective, well-qualified educators our students deserve. According to the 2022 - 2023 Educator Shortage Report from the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents, 79% of school districts statewide reported having a teacher shortage problem in 2022, with more than 2700 open teacher, special education, and support staff positions remaining unfilled or filled with someone less than qualified. The teacher shortage crisis leads to teacher burnout, overcrowded classrooms, and a lack of educators in areas such as bilingual and special education and STEM.

“Opening applications for our Scholars program is always an exciting time for Golden Apple, but it’s particularly meaningful this year as we look to welcome the largest class of

Scholars in the program’s decades-long history,” said Golden Apple President Alan Mather. “There are so many looking for a way to make a difference in the lives of future generations who just need the support to get into the classroom. Providing that support is exactly what the Golden Apple’s Scholars program does, and we encourage all of those interested in teaching to apply. We look forward to hearing from inspiring future educators from all across our state!”

The Scholars program focuses on teacher preparation and tuition assistance for high school seniors as well as freshman and sophomore college students in Illinois who have the determination and drive to teach. Scholars receive up to $23,000 in financial assistance, extensive classroom teaching experience, academic and social-emotional support, job placement assistance and mentoring from Golden Apple’s award-winning teachers. Throughout the history of the program, 53% of Golden Apple Scholars have been Scholars of color and 97% of Scholars find employment within 90 days of graduation.

To learn more and apply, interested parties can visit www.goldenapple.org/scholars.

Illinois Secure Choice Helps Address Retirement Savings Crisis as Key Deadline for Small Businesses Approaches

Businesses with 5-15 employees must act by Nov. 1

SPRINGFIELD – Nearly 129,000 Illinois workers already are saving for retirement courtesy of the Illinois Secure Choice program, and now a key deadline is approaching for small employers to help even more employees do the same.

Under state law, businesses that had between 5 and 15 employees last year have until Nov. 1 to help their workers access a retirement savings option by either signing up for Illinois Secure Choice or offering a private retirement plan.

“There is a growing recognition

that many workers understand that Social Security alone will not be enough to make ends meet after their working days are over,” said State Treasurer Michael Frerichs, whose office administers the program. “Illinois Secure Choice helps workers retire with dignity and confidence.”

The Illinois General Assembly created Secure Choice in 2015 and assigned the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office to help set up the program. Lawmakers assured employers they would not be responsible for investment decisions and barred them from contributing to a worker’s account. Lawmakers also assured workers their accounts would travel with them if they changed employers, and that they could opt out of participating in the program.

How Illinois Secure Choice works: The default option for program participants is to enroll in a target-date Roth IRA with a 5 percent contribution rate. Participants can choose to change their contribution level or fund option at any time. Participants contribute a portion of their paycheck to their IRA through a payroll deduction facilitated by their employer. Accounts are owned by individual participants and are portable from job-to-job. Investments are held in a separate trust outside the Illinois Treasury and managed by professional investment managers.

The law phased in employer onboarding by employer size, starting with companies of 500 or more employees when the program launched in 2018. The deadline for the final onboarding group, Wave 5, employers with five or more employees, is Nov. 1, 2023.

Wave 5 represents a huge opportunity to get more Illinois workers saving for retirement because the retirement savings gap is biggest among employees of small businesses. It’s the segment of employers that typically has the most difficulty in offering a private plan.

aren’t covered by a workplace retirement plan, and for businesses with fewer than 10 employees, that figure is nearly 73 percent, according to the AARP.

The employer component is key because workers are 15 times more likely to save for retirement if they can do so through payroll deductions, according to an AARP study. And there’s a need to save --- 23 percent of retirees rely upon Social Security for 90 percent of their retirement income, though Social Security was never intended to be the sole source of income in retirement.

Today, more than 128,760 workers, many of whom never thought they could save for retirement, have set aside more than $132.7 million through Illinois Secure Choice.

Lagomarcino’s, a Moline confectionary, is one of the thousands of businesses facilitating employee participation in the program.

“Illinois Secure Choice providers an opportunity for our employees to save for retirement, which we love to see!” said Lisa Ambrose, whose family has run the business since 1908. “The setup of the program was fairly simple, especially given the excellent support I received throughout the process.”

Illinois Secure Choice has sent out several rounds of notification emails and letters to Wave 5 employers, with more to come in October. The outreach effort has paid off, with a 37% increase in employer registrations since outreach efforts ramped up in July. Businesses that don’t take action eventually could face the prospect of penalties assessed by the Illinois Department of Revenue.

What employers are required to do: Offer employees access to Illinois Secure Choice or another retirement program. Employers that are contacted by the program must either start the process of getting Illinois Secure Choice in place or request an exemption (for instance, if they already offer a qualified retirement plan for their workers).

FOSTER ANNOUNCES $1 MILLION USDA

FOREST SERVICE AWARD FOR AURORA

Aurora, IL – Recently, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) announced that the City of Aurora will receive a funding award through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service’s Urban and Community Forestry Program totaling $1,000,000.

Made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act passed by Congress last year, the funding is designed to provide direct federal support to local communities for urban tree-planting and management. It will support the City of Aurora’s Urban Forest project, which includes development and implementation of an urban forest management plan, the planting of high-quality trees throughout the city, and enhanced workforce development to maintain the health of Aurora’s trees.

“This is great news for Aurora,” said Congressman Foster. “Improving the environment has been such an important part of Aurora’s growth in the decades I’ve known it, and this funding will go a long way to expanding the urban forest in Aurora, making it easier for people to get outside and enjoy nature without having to leave the city. I’m proud of the work the city is doing to plant more trees and maintain their health so that future generations can also benefit from expanded green spaces. I will continue advocating for federal resources for IL-11 communities to protect our local environment and its natural beauty.”

“Needless to say, we have a million reason to be excited about this news and the future of forestry in Aurora,” said Aurora Mayor Richard C. Irvin. “Thanks to the USDA Forest Service and the integral local work led by the Aurora Tree Board and City staff, Aurorans will literally breathe easier well into the future because of the improved plans, maintenance, and health of our urban forest in the City of Lights.”

More information on the USDA Forest Service’s Urban and Community Forestry program is available here.

GIANNOULIAS ANNOUNCES ADDITIONS TO SKIP-THE-LINE PROGRAM

Plan includes opening two “Senior Only” centers in Chicago metro area

Additional appointment capacity added to accommodate driver’s license services Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced his office is implementing a number of additions to the Skip-the-Line program, which launched just three weeks ago.

From September 1 to September 21, Illinois Driver and Motor Vehicle facilities (DMVs) have seen more than 165,000 customers by appointment throughout the state. Customers with appointments are experiencing little to no wait times upon arrival at DMVs, which is a vast improvement compared to the hour-plus waits that Illinoisans had come to expect when visiting DMVs before adopting the Skip-the-Line program.

“The Skip-the-Line program has been functioning at a high level in the few weeks since its official launch,” Giannoulias said. “But we can still make improvements with targeted adjustments, and I am focused on implementing these to benefit all of our customers, especially our seniors.”

Giannoulias announced his office will implement the following additions, many of which are tailored specifically toward seniors:

Opening two “Senior Only” walk-in centers in the Chicago area. The two locations include the Evanston Civic Center, 2100 N. Ridge Road in Evanston and Seat Geek Stadium, 7000 S. Harlem Ave. in Bridgeview. Seniors at these locations will not need appointments, as these walk-in centers are specifically designed to meet their needs. By offering this targeted option, the office is prioritizing seniors without impacting customers at DMVs who have made appointments. Seniors still have the option to make a standard appointment at these and other locations.

About 40 percent of the state’s private-sector workers do not have access to an employer-sponsored retirement plan. Those numbers are even higher for those at small businesses. Among businesses with 10-24 employees, nearly 59 percent of workers

Wave 5 has the largest number of employers at nearly 77,000 employers. More than 35,000 already are marked as exempt, according to the program administrator.

Eligible employers can register or request an exemption at www. ilsecurechoice.com.

Increasing the number of available appointments. Expanding scheduling availability will increase the number of in-car/road test appointments at Chicagoland DMVs by over 40%, or nearly 1,300 more per day.

Adding additional call center features to serve seniors aged 70 and older who require a road exam. These callers will be routed directly to operators who will provide on-the-spot information, schedule appointments or assist with online renewals. Seniors may call 800-2528980.

Adding new features to the appointment website. Customers can now filter DMVs by ZIP code, highlighting appointment openings at DMVs closest to them.

Toyota Returns with Follow-up to its ‘Need a Nudge’ Program

PLANO, Texas – After honoring an inspiring group of deserving, noteworthy local grassroots organizations from across the U.S. last year with $10,000 grants in the first-ever Toyota “Need a Nudge” program, the carmaker returns for 2023 with an enticing follow-up campaign conceived to benefit America’s 106 Historically Black Colleges and Universities, intent upon complementing the total $300,000 in micro-grants recipients were awarded in 2022.

The new campaign is aptly titled “After the Nudge,” and like its predecessor, it stands as a nod to the ways in which small gestures to some, can mean the world to someone who needs it most, and why paying it forward is a concept that should be continued and expanded upon—with the added component of individuals empowered to help drive that impact. A companion national podcast series, co-hosted by noted, award-winning Black journalist Soledad O’Brien and former NBA athlete J.R. Smith will also nationally debut early this month documenting in an engaging format how Toyota “nudged” grassroots community organizations with the micro-grants, and how site visitors now have a unique opportunity to join in Toyota’s efforts to support HBCU’s across the higher education ecosystem.

While Toyota last year focused on the founders of community-based organizations, achieving a resounding program success by garnering an impressive 4.5 million votes and underscoring the far-reaching engagement and enthusiasm of the community, this year the brand will seek to benefit HBCUs with the introduction of the “Nudge Button,” an online tab that when activated prompts the company to contribute one dollar to America’s Black colleges. Even better, the sky’s the limit in fueling this emotional connection as the button, accessible at AftertheNudge.com, can be depressed as often as ten times per day, per individual, toward Toyota’s goal of donating $300,000 to these storied

institutions in 2023.

Toyota has proudly extended the role of doing the nudging itself this year, instead pulling in consumers to encourage them to do even more at the push of the Nudge button. And, limiting participation to ten presses per day ensures that the online interaction is with real people, rather than a program or virus.

“At Toyota, our vision and invitation is for the allies, friends, and alumni of HBCUs to join us in helping these colleges and universities continue to make a difference as they serve their students. This new national initiative will enable us to uplift and prepare students for impactful careers as the workforce of the future,” said Mike Tripp, VP of Marketing and Communications, Toyota Motor North America. “We are gratified to be able to play a role in supporting HBCUs with this innovative program, empowering them to continue the legacy work they’re known for.”

“Grassroots community organizations do incredible work day in and day out. What an honor to have the chance to elevate their inspiring stories,” states Soledad O’Brien, one of America’s most recognized and accomplished broadcast journalists. “I’m thrilled to partner with Pod Digital Media and Toyota as we celebrate these true heroes.”

“As an HBCUer myself, it’s a win-win for me to be able to align with Toyota, as well as to be paired with a media legend like Soledad O’Brien, all to amplify the hard work, unique culture and success that our HBCUs are known for,” says co-host J.R. Smith. “I encourage people to tune-in regularly to the ‘After the Nudge’ podcast, as well as to interact daily with the Nudge button— and then tell someone about it, as it empowers us all to be engaged and to make a positive difference.”

“Pod Digital Media is thrilled to serve as Toyota’s exclusive media and podcast production partner, collaborating to craft this dynamic and influential custom

podcast series,” says Gary Coichy, Pod Digital Media founder & CEO.

At the campaign’s conclusion, the final “After the Nudge” donations from Toyota will be made to the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO), the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) and the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). In collaboration with NAFEO, TMCF and UNCF, the donations will be dispersed across HBCUs large and small, and spanning all degrees of renown.

Visitors are actively encouraged to participate by visiting Toyota’s AftertheNudge.com website often, press the “Need A Nudge” button daily and then be sure to tune in to the inspiring “After the Nudge” podcast series for the latest program news, profiles, information and updates.

NYC designer Renee Cafaro presents plus size couture runway show at London Fashion Week

LONDON, PRNewswire -- This season at London Fashion Week, Renee Cafaro Atelier opened the day of shows for Oxford Fashion Studio’s Emerge show. Cafaro debuted her Spring/Summer 2024 collection, The Love Parade, named after a legendary music festival. It is a whimsical display of heart patterns, bright colors, and fun textures. Renee Cafaro is a designer from New York who creates luxurious and unique couture exclusively for plus sizes, and draws inspiration from many eras. “This collection is Carnaby Street meets Coachella. I wanted to blend modern, neon festivalwear with psychedelic patterns and mod silhouettes,” Cafaro explains.

The heart theme was not just about bold patterns but also about bold statements. The finale look included a hand-painted satin bubble cape jacket for what Cafaro calls a “collective art piece.” “I wanted to synthesize all of the themes of the collection and mission of my brand into [the final look]. The whole glamour of the outfit evokes 60s movie star style, but I gave it a psychedelic paint job and crystal-embellished it with a statement about self love. I then brought markers to the fitting and asked all of the models to add their own words to it…whatever statement they wish the world would know about being a woman in the plus size community because these models are all incredible activists and influencers in their own right and shouldn’t be treated like just hangers. Most were messages about ‘being enough’ or notes to

their younger selves and that made me cry!” the designer elaborated.

The 18-look collection progressed from daywear separates with surprising touches like matching a neon houndstooth slip dress with raincoat lining, heart cutouts and reversible skirts and maxi vests – and it transitioned all the way through to floral and sequined eveningwear. The psychedelic tee-shirt artwork was done by LA-based artist, Subconscious Junkyard and featured a beautiful curvy Lady Godiva-like figure, paired on the runway with her moto/miniskirt sets.

Plus supermodel of Project Runway fame, Liris Crosse, strutted down the runway to open the show in an acrylic raincloud-embellished raincoat to open the show, and once again in a jaw-dropping minidress that Cafaro dubbed, The Porcupine, for its thousands of Barbie pink sequin “spines” and crystals. Trinidadian-born model and influencer Sarah Hamel-Smith wore a groundbreaking creation by Cafaro, long gloves connected by a silk-flowered lattice shawl. “In all my years of obsessing over fashion history, I have yet to see a shawl with attached gloves and thought that would be so cool. I did an attached glove gown a few years ago so I guess I have a thing for gloves!”

Renee Cafaro Atelier is a fair-wage, ethical haute couture design house based in NYC. Dedicated to bolstering the local economy of the Garment District, all garments are created and sourced locally, including

JEMS by PENSOLE launch the FIRST JEM

COLUMBUS, Ohio, PRNewswire -- Designer Brands Inc. (NYSE: DBI) (the “Company” and “Designer Brands”), one of the world’s largest designers, producers and retailers of footwear and accessories, today unveiled the FIRST JEM, the inaugural shoe from the JEMS by PENSOLE brand. This momentous occasion marks the first shoe to roll off the assembly line at one of the first Black-owned footwear factories in the U.S. Based in Somersworth, NH, the factory opened earlier this year as part of a partnership between Designer Brands and JEMS by PENSOLE focused on creating opportunity for underrepresented Black designers in the footwear industry.

The FIRST JEM, available exclusively at DSW.com, is a shoe with a story unlike any other. While many sneakers are designed for or inspired by consumer lifestyle insights, trends, influencers, and professional athletes, the FIRST JEM is inspired by American history through the lens of

a Black man who changed an entire industry over 140 years ago: Jan Ernst Matzeliger.

“The FIRST JEM celebrates Matzeliger’s little-known legacy,” said legendary footwear designer Dr. D’Wayne Edwards, founder of JEMS by PENSOLE and Detroit-based Pensole Lewis College of Business & Design, the only design-focused Historically Black College & University in the country. “His invention of the Lasting Machine in 1883 revolutionized the way shoes are made and is still used today.

We’re celebrating his legacy and embodying that same revolutionary spirit, seeking to bring opportunity to new design talent and influence the face of the footwear industry.”

To truly memorialize Matzeliger’s impact, the FIRST JEM launches on his birthday, Sept. 15. With a hand-crafted leather finish and rich history in every stitch, this one-of-a-kind sneaker is a celebration of the past and a look at the future.

The Lasting Machine is shown on the sock liner, while the JEMS badge logo represents the most valuable gem of all — a diamond — symbolizing the gem that Matzeliger was, and the future gems that JEMS by PENSOLE will foster. Even the acronym, JEMS, stands for Jan Ernst Matzeliger Studio.

“Diversity drives innovation and brings new thinking, designs and products to consumers, yet Black representation sits at less than five percent across all design industries,” said Designer Brands President Bill Jordan. “We’re excited to partner with Dr. Edwards on the JEMS by PENSOLE line. FIRST JEM is just the beginning step in our goal to forge entrepreneurial opportunities for underrepresented footwear designers and make their vision and designs accessible to our customers at DSW stores.”

Designer Brands and JEMS by PENSOLE plan to utilize the new Somersworth factory to roll out future lines of athletic footwear by new brands and underrepresented designers in the coming years. JEMS by PENSOLE will be sold exclusively at DSW.com and future drops will be available at select DSW stores.

“I’m grateful for the City Council’s confirmation of Superintendent Larry Snelling today, marking a step forward in our journey to create a better, stronger, safer Chicago,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “Superintendent Snelling is a proven leader who has the experience and the respect of his peers to help ensure the safety and well-being of all city residents, and address the complex challenges we all face related to community safety.”

“I am confident that by working collaboratively with our new superintendent and all vested stakeholders inside government and beyond, we can develop and implement comprehensive strategies that address the unique needs of each community and improve public safety throughout our great city.”

Snelling joined CPD in 1992 as a patrol officer in his home community of Englewood. This type of community-based policing experience remained core to his values and his experience as he ascended through the department.

After serving as a patrol officer in the 7th (Englewood) District, Superintendent Snelling was promoted to sergeant, serving in the 22nd (Morgan Park) District and Physical Skills and Operations sections for recruit training at the Police Academy. He returned to the 7th District as watch operations lieutenant before being promoted to

commander, and later, deputy chief of Area 2.

“It is a tremendous honor to answer the call to serve my hometown and the people of Chicago as Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department, and I thank the City Council for the overwhelming support,” said Superintendent Larry Snelling. “In order to continue to make progress as a department, we must embrace innovation and partnership, continue to strengthen morale, and go further in strengthening bonds of trust between police and community.

“We will do this in collaboration with Mayor Johnson and the full force of government. I promise to work with and on behalf of every community to strengthen safety and build a stronger city for the people of Chicago.”

Superintendent Snelling was raised on the South Side of Chicago. He is a product of Chicago Public Schools, graduating from Englewood High School, and holds a bachelor’s degree in adult education from DePaul University.

Superintendent Snelling redesigned the Department’s current force training model around national best practices and constitutional policing and has testified as an expert in federal use of force cases. Additionally, he was a lead trainer for field force training for the 2012 Chicago NATO Summit.

“I have seen Superintendent Snelling grow throughout his career and I know he is prepared to lead this Department with a fresh vision and a sincere love for our city,” said Interim Superintendent Fred Waller. “It has been a privilege to lead

CPD during this time and I know I am leaving it in good hands with Superintendent Snelling.”

In 2022, Superintendent Snelling was promoted to Chief of the Department’s Bureau of Counterterrorism, which coordinates with the Office of Emergency Management and Communication and other city agencies, as well as other local, county, state and federal emergency responders, to respond to city emergencies.

“I am thrilled to see Superintendent Snelling take the helm of the Chicago Police Department,” said Deputy Mayor of Community Safety Garien Gatewood. “As a pillar of this community as well as the rank and file of CPD, Snelling offers a vital perspective and unwavering commitment to community safety that will help transition the CPD into a new era of compassionate community policing and building safety for all.”

“I have full confidence in Superintendent Snelling’s ability to navigate the many challenges and champion an era of constitutional reform for the Chicago Police Department,” said Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability (CCPSA) President Anthony Driver. “Superintendent Snelling has spent his 28-year policing career fostering invaluable relationships with the CPD as well as with city residents, community leaders, and public safety organizations. Under his leadership, he will build the bridges necessary for a community-oriented safety strategy.”

The confirmation comes after a monthslong, deliberative search and process led by the CCPSA.

In a new online video, Megan Thee Stallion encourages students who embrace the spicy, rebellious spirit of the brand to attend the university. At the fictitious university that’s motto is “Education is Hot,” they can learn to “Unleash their Flamin’ Hot” through short, snackable courses on food, fashion and lifestyle.

As elevating your drip is one of the easiest ways to embrace confidence, Megan also gave her hottie stamp of approval to an exclusive line of Flamin’ Hot University merchandise created by streetwear designer Melody Ehsani. The collection features six items guaranteed to spice up your on-campus ‘fits, including a Stallion Varsity Jacket, Hot Girl Club Sweater, and more.

Proceeds from the merchandise collection will go towards establishing a scholarship fund, of up to $150,000, at Texas Southern University (TSU), an HBCU based in Houston and Megan’s alma mater. To purchase the exclusive merchandise and support the scholarship fund, visit MelodyEhsani.com while supplies last. TSU Tigers are encouraged to visit tsu.edu/flaminhot to learn more

about the scholarship.

“Every piece in this collection is as spicy as Megan Thee Stallion and the Flamin’ Hot snacks that inspired it,” said Ehsani. “I love that in addition to creating some bold and fun pieces, we were able to give back to the students at Texas Southern University.”

Additionally, Flamin’ Hot will make a separate contribution of $100,000 to the Pete and Thomas Foundation, the non-profit organization that Megan launched in 2022 that focuses on uplifting and assisting women, children, senior citizens, and underserved communities in Houston, Texas and across the world. The organization focuses on three core sectors – education, housing, health and wellness – and is committed to supporting mission-aligned, non-profit organizations, generating awareness around key campaigns and spearheading its owned and operated activities.

“I had an absolute blast bringing Flamin’ Hot University to life and tapping into my love for food and fashion,” Megan Thee Stallion said. “But more than anything, I’m extremely proud that we were able to uplift TSU students, establish an impactful scholarship fund, support the Pete and Thomas Foundation and promote the importance of education.”

In each episode, Stone chats with chefs and shares a wine that complements their meals, including:

Street Somm is the first streaming content premiering as part of the multi-year, multi-million dollar partnership announced earlier this year between Tastemade and Constellation Brands, bringing the stories of their premium wine and spirits portfolio into the homes of millions of monthly viewers. Starting with Street Somm, Tastemade and Constellation Brands are blending global wine and spirits culture with innovative storytelling. Through original series and social content, talent partnerships, media, and experiential partnerships, this partnership brings Constellation’s leading brands into the homes of consumers across the globe.

The series is executive produced by Taye Shuayb, Mike Aho, Joey Lucas and Ben Jehoshua.

PUBLICIST SEAN HOWARD RECEIVED THE PRESIDENTIAL LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Sean Howard- CEO of STH Media LLC- – received the prestigious Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award during church service this past Sunday, witnessed by over 500 residents of Chicago. Various government officials took part in presenting Howard the award signed by the President of the United States of America, Joe Biden. Bishop Larry D. Trotter and a select group of high ranking elected officials were present as Sean Howard was bestowed with the wonderful honor.

Sean Howard has spent his entire adult life contributing to the upward mobility of the Black community and beyond. He has donated thousands of volunteer hours advocating for the poor, organizing water collections for deprived cities and countries, coordinating over the counter medicine drives for impoverished areas of Africa, using his own funds to send disadvantage kids to prom and self-financing shopping sprees for families who have been forced out of their homes due to fires.

S ean Howard has also played a pivotal role in putting a media spotlight on individuals who are making a difference in the community. He has volunteered his media services to highlight the achievements of so many youths throughout the nation. His impact in the media has been felt not only in Illinois, but throughout parts of Florida, Texas, Michigan, Tennessee, Africa, and Haiti.

Sean Howard played a pivotal role in the adoption laws being enhanced here in Illinois. In 2005, six-month old “Baby Tamia” was illegally adopted by a drug convicted couple in Utah. Baby Tamia’s grandmother approached Sean about the matter. Sean immediately launched a national public relations campaign to find Baby Tamia in a chaotic system and eventually found her and had her returned safely back to Chicago to a willing grandmother to whom she has successfully been raised. From his actions, the then Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan pushed through legislation to strengthen the child adoption laws. The measure was entitled, the Baby Tamia Law. Attorney General Madigan and former Governor Rod Blagojevich praised Sean Howard’s work in saving Baby Tamia.

“I am so grateful to have Sean as a member of our church for over 33 years. He has single handedly branded our ministry and introduced the church to so many exciting concepts and programs. Moreover, he has been a blessing to hundreds of ministers throughout Chicago. He is not only one of the best publicists in the country, but also one of the greatest humanitarians. President Biden chose the right person for this Lifetime Achievement Award.” says Bishop Larry D. Trotter.

Sean has been at the center of every major move of progress in Chicago over the last three decades. His name is always called upon when tough times hit our community. But he has been the figure that creates resolve as well. He has the tone and temperament to not only problem solve, but also to successfully coalesce people from all social classes for the upward mobility of the African American community.” says Bishop Tavis Grant, Executive Vice-President of Rainbow P.U.S.H.

Illinois State Representative Debbie Meyers-Martin adds, “Sean is a valued presence in our community. He keeps his nose to the ground to help the countless people he has come across down through the years. But his commitment to excellence is what impresses so many of us who depend on him for our messaging. He is more than deserving of this honor.”

Sean Howard’s work ethic has been considered best in class by many of the leaders who have benefited from his efforts. He has managed and coordinated several political campaigns and civic related missions. He has hosted his own radio and television shows as well as moderated numerous community forums. He has received countless honors and recognitions including the 2022 Chicago Defender Men of Excellence Award for his enormous work.

Rich Township Supervisor and Democratic Committeeman Calvin Jordan has a thirty-year friendship with Sean and considers him a close friend.” Sean has given of himself to help so many people both professionally and otherwise. He has long been the man behind the scenes of so many positive events in our community. I am so happy that President Biden is recognizing all of his accomplishments. Sean’s “work ethic has truly saved the lives of many people throughout Illinois who faced tough times.”

“The Southland has grown tremendously in part because of people such as Sean. Our region has a standing place in every newsroom because of Sean’s undying mission to tell our collective stories accurately within the media. But moreover, he is an outstanding Government Spokesman and Publicist. However, for years he was never compensated. He did it from his heart.” says Illinois State Representative Thaddeus Jones.

Sean is married to Blue Island Park Commissioner Tonya Howard. Together they have five adult children: Chyna, Chanel, Jazmyn, Joi Leah, and Attorney Sean T. Howard II. They also have six grandchildren: Savannah, Bella, Shane, Shannon, Patrick, and Reign.

Promising Students Benefit From Commitment to Developing Diverse Talent

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., PRNewswire -- National Black MBA Association Graduate Student Case Competition continues with Stellantis as exclusive sponsor

Event provides for skilled, high-potential MBA candidates from nation’s leading business schools to compete for $50,000 in scholarships

Competition conducted annually at National Black MBA Association’s conference and exposition

Talented MBA candidates from 20 of the country’s top business schools competed for $50,000 in scholarships in the 2023 National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) Graduate Student Case Competition, sponsored by Stellantis.

The NBMBAA/Stellantis Graduate Case Competition is an annual event that gives high-potential graduate students an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and problem-solving skills in a formal competition.

The competition is held each year as part of the NBMBAA’s annual conference and exposition. This year, the Graduate Case Competition was held Sept. 13-14 in Philadelphia, and winning teams were announced Sept. 15.

“At Stellantis, we’re proud to continue our long-standing support of the National Black MBA Association and the Graduate Case Competition,” said Lottie Holland, vice president, diversity, inclusion, engagement and EEO compliance, Stellantis North America. “This impressive competition is a showcase event for diversity, leadership and student achievement that allows our company to demonstrate our unwavering commitment to identifying, recruiting and developing diverse talent and future business leaders that will fuel our success.”

Stellantis has been the exclusive sponsor of the Graduate Case Competition since 1995, with nearly 5,000 students participating over the years.

During the competition, teams are given a business case from which they develop solutions. Each student team then prepares and presents its case to a panel of experienced business executives. Teams are judged on their analysis of the case, the feasibility of their recommendations and the quality of their presentations.

For the 2023 NBMBAA Business Case, students were tasked to represent a consulting firm that will develop a U.S. marketing strategy that builds awareness, vehicle-buying consideration, long-term brand affinity and loyalty among Black consumers for Dodge, one of the iconic brands in the Stellantis portfolio.

This year, the students from Clark Atlanta University took home the first-place trophy as national champions and $25,000 in scholarships.

The second- and third-place teams represented Vanderbilt University and Auburn University, earning $15,000 and $10,000 in scholarships, respectively.

An important way Stellantis pursues its long-standing commitment to diversity is by supporting many diversity-serving organizations around North America, particularly in the company’s pursuit of diverse talent, a key ingredient in fueling its innovation.

“Initiatives such as this enable our company to make important investments in talent, ensuring a future thriving with a diverse and inclusive network of future leaders,” Holland said. “This commitment brings our company’s purpose and values to life - powered by our diversity, we lead the way the world moves.”

NBMBAA is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) member-based professional organization which leads in the creation of educational, wealth building and growth opportunities for Black students, professionals and entrepreneurs. Representing more than 21,000 members within 41 professional chapters, 33 Leaders of Tomorrow® chapters, and over 500 corporate and non-profit partners, the Association is dedicated to developing alliances that create intellectual and economic wealth in the Black community through its five channels of engagement: career, education, entrepreneurship, leadership and lifestyle.

Stellantis (NYSE: STLA) is one of the world’s leading automakers and a mobility provider. In North America, it’s best known for producing and selling vehicles in a portfolio of iconic and award-winning brands such as Jeep®, Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Alfa Romeo and Fiat.
