Art vs Violence on Chicago’s Forgotten Westside Chicago, Ill. -- West Garfield Park was recently dubbed the ‘most violent neighborhood in Chicago’ by the Chicago Sun-Times. This historic neighborhood has witnessed nearly 1,000 shootings in the last five years – approximately one shooting every other day. West Garfield Park, however, is fighting back. A resilient and progressive hope has birthed: The Sankofa School of the Arts. Sankofa is a new, dynamic and collaborative arts showcase supported by leading West Side institutions: New Mount Pilgrim Church-Chicago, the innovative men’s group – the MAAFA Redemption Project, and the Chicago Blackhawks Foundation. “This arts showcase serves a dual purpose. Primarily, it aims to spotlight the exceptional talents of our Black and Brown students in various art forms, celebrating their hard work and dedication,” expressed Mrs. Kenya Joyce Pendleton, the Director of Development, Partnerships, and Strategic Planning at the MAAFA Redemption Project. “Furthermore, this event stands as a beacon of the successful collaboration and community engagement represented by the Garfield Park Rite to Wellness Collaborative, recipient of the recent $10 million Chicago Prize Grant. As part of this collaborative, we’re proud to share a glimpse of what’s to come in West Garfield Park.” Pendle-
ton added. Supporters view this initiative as the embodiment of the grant’s vision: fostering community wellness through creative expression and cultural enrichment in West Garfield Park. The showcase aims to underscore the crucial role of arts in empowering young minds, building community connections, and nurturing a sense of belonging and achievement among our youth. Beyond an exhibition of artistic talent, the event stands as a testament to the resilience and potential of our community when supported through strong and viable collaborative efforts. This event materialized through significant funding from the Chicago Blackhawks Foundation, New Mount Pilgrim Church-Chicago, and the MAAFA Redemption Project, exemplifying how strategic community investments and partnerships can yield positive outcomes in cultural enrichment and youth development. “West Garfield Park is resilient, and we are coming together to tackle the pressing issue of gun violence while nurturing the immense talent within our youth. Our community wholeheartedly supports Sankofa School of the Arts,” stated Marseil Jackson, Radio personality at AM 1390 and CEO of The Dream Center Chicago.

“I wholeheartedly support the new Sankofa School of the Arts. As young people are introduced to new opportunities to showcase their talents and express their creativity, its one of the best ways to create safer streets in Chicago,” stated David Cherry, City Leader of the Award Winning Performance-based youth program the All-Stars Project. “One of my greatest regrets as
a civil rights advocate was when CPS slashed the arts budget in our schools. Art cultivates the spirit, “states Pastor Ira Acree. “Poverty of the spirit is one of the primary causes of the violence today. The Sankofa School of the Arts will re-energize the spirit of our youth, which is critical in making our communities safer for everyone,” Acree added.

SHERIFF DART, ILLINOIS SECRETARY OF STATE GIANNOULIAS PARTNER TO PROVIDE STATE ID CARDS TO INDIVIDUALS LEAVING COOK COUNTY JAIL Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart and Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced today a partnership to provide State Identification Cards for individuals leaving Cook County Jail. The partnership is the first of its kind for a county jail. Government issued IDs are critical for enrolling in educational programs, onboarding for jobs as well as obtaining housing and government benefits. Individuals in custody may have lost their ID cards or they may have expired while in custody, and they may face challenges in attempting to renew them after returning to the community. “We know that people who have a safe place to live, are receiving services they need, and are employed are less likely to reoffend,” Sheriff Dart said. “Having a government-issued ID is the first step to obtaining those things. So, this initiative not only helps people with their individual needs but also helps public safety.” The program is initially working with individuals who either have previously applied for a State ID card or driver’s license, or have access to documents, such as birth certificates and social security cards, to apply for the first time. The program will gradually expand to provide IDs to everyone in Cook County Jail custody. “Providing individuals who have completed their sentences with essential resources and tools upon their release increases their chances to successfully re-enter society, become self-sufficient and rebuild their lives,” Secretary Giannoulias said. “A valid state ID will help them with basic needs like locating housing, securing a job, opening a bank account, enrolling in assistance programs, and attaining reliable transportation. Fulfilling these basic needs reduces recidivism, saves taxpayer money, and makes our communities stronger.” Sheriff ’s Office staff will work with the interested participants to complete the application forms and take photographs. If necessary, Sheriff ’s Office staff can also help first-time applicants with accessing vital documents they already have such as birth certificates or social security cards. The collected information will be sent electronically via a secure transfer to the Secretary of State’s Office. After the Secretary of State’s Office staff determines applicants have met the requirements for an ID card, they will be mailed to their residences. Prior to the partnership with the Secretary of State’s Office, Cook County Jail worked with the Chicago City Clerk’s Office to provide municipal ID cards for individuals in custody who were Chicago residents. The Secretary of State’s Office launched a similar program in 2021 for returning residents released from Illinois Department of Corrections custody, issuing more than 2,100 ID cards to program participants to date.

UrbanGeekz Unveils Inaugural UrbanGeekz 50 to Showcase Gamechangers in Tech, Innovation and Entrepreneurship
ATLANTA, PRNewswire -- Award-winning digital media brand UrbanGeekz has published its first-ever 2023 UrbanGeekz 50 List. Drawing from their editorial work the inaugural list showcases the most innovative, imaginative, and inspirational Black leaders in venture, technology, and entrepreneurship. Standout changemakers such as Kelly Burton, Marlon Nichols, Tope Awotona, and Izzy Obeng are just some of the honorees featured. The list’s 10 distinct verticals highlight mainly, although not exclusively tech-enabled ventures. The categories are Venture; Software; FinTech; AI and Machine Learning, Digital Media; Food, Climate & Health; Business-to-Consumer; Community Builders & Ecosystem Warriors, Africa, and Europe. “It’s an honor and privilege to curate this list celebrating Black excellence across the innovation economy,” said Kunbi Tinuoye, founder and CEO of UrbanGeekz. “Our goal is to profile and celebrate visionaries making an impact, breaking boundaries, and inspiring others to do better.” Published by UrbanGeekz and presented by MHR International the class of 2023 was selected and curated by the news site’s editorial team. However, to broaden the selection process UrbanGeekz reached out to well-respected ecosystem leaders such as Ollen Douglass, Andrea Hoffman, and Mike Ross for recommendations. “In our 2023 listicle, we feature eight outstanding individuals leading unicorn companies,” adds Tinuoye. “Black-led unicorns are rare. We showcase these leaders to inspire and influence the next generation of ambitious innovators.” “By far our largest category is Community Builders & Ecosystem Warriors. We recognize that these operators often lay the foundation for success. They work tirelessly behind the scenes providing much-needed support for Black founders to thrive,” she adds.
“We also highlight visionaries from Africa and Europe. We are well aware that these regions, especially countries like Nigeria, Rwanda, and South Africa, are fast-growing tech hubs. As our global footprint continues to grow these markets will continue to be key regions for our brand.” “What’s important to note is this is not a definitive list. Rather we’d describe it as a snapshot of talent. So, for instance, we have already published well-received listicles on venture capital but almost all the people highlighted in those articles don’t feature on UrbanGeekz 50. We simply do not have the capacity in a list of 50. We also believe it’s important to highlight other unsung heroes. The listicle will be updated annually.” “Finally, we also need to give a special shoutout to Albert Lewis and Erica Billups Johnson from Archetype, a leading global communications agency that partners with creators and industry leaders to build compelling brands. Billups Johnson is also the co-creator and co-lead of Archetype Ascend, a division within Archetype focused on providing branding, strategic communications, and support for Black and Brown founders, executives, and VCs. We are so grateful to have collaborated with these experts on the visuals and branding for this project.” “We were thrilled to have partnered with UrbanGeekz on this project,” said Billups Johnson, Senior Vice President at Archetype. “Our goal at Archetype Ascend is to increase the visibility of exceptional BIPOC founders, leaders, and investors. This initiative was a perfect fit for us, and we look forward to collaborating with UrbanGeekz and other BIPOC leaders on other media-related campaigns.” Presenting sponsor MHR International is an Atlanta-based management consulting firm specializing in Program & Construction Management, Strategic Business Consulting, and Diversity & Inclusion Initiatives.

(StatePoint) The holiday season comes with lots of todos. From decorating inside and out, to shopping for thoughtful presents and planning the perfect party, there’s a lot to accomplish. Even after those preparations are complete, there’s the task of wrapping the gifts and arranging them neatly under the tree—or shipping them to loved ones who are farther away. If you are gift wrapping this year, follow these tips to add some festive fun to the process. 1. Make a Day Out of It. After you have completed your shopping, designate a day for wrapping. Create a jolly atmosphere by playing holiday tunes, lighting seasonally scented candles, and inviting a loved one or friend to join in on the fun. Engage in some friendly competition to see who can create the prettiest present or wrap the fastest – or relax and wrap over some hot cocoa. 2. Involve the Little Ones. Allow your children or nieces and nephews to be part of the giving process by having them create their own wrapping paper. Use kraft paper as a canvas for them to decorate with colorful crayons, markers, glitter glue and stickers. You also can use the versatile paper to fill the inside of the box to keep items safe and secure. The homemade packaging will make the outside of the present just as thoughtful as the inside.
with a piece of tape. Some brands even offer tapes that tear easily and can be dispensed with one hand, such as Duck brand EZ Start Packing Tape, further simplifying the process. If you are planning on shipping multiple presents in one box, fill the box with the cushioning to ensure they stay put. 4. Build Anticipation. When it’s time for one of the “big” gifts to be unwrapped, elevate your loved one’s excitement by adding a suspenseful element. Wrap the item with multiple layers of tape and paper. If the gift is small, consider using
3. Protect Your Presents. Nothing dampens holiday cheer more than a broken gift. Protect fragile items by using Duck brand Small Bubble Cushioning Wrap. Simply wrap the reusable bubble cushion wrap around your gift and secure it
using multiple boxes to create a nesting doll effect. 5. Personalize It. Add a sentimental touch by designing a personalized gift tag for each box. Write a handwritten heartfelt message or draw hints on leftover kraft paper as to what the gift might be. By incorporating these tips into your holiday traditions, wrapping gifts can become one of the merriest parts of the most wonderful time of the year.

Winter Woes! New Survey Finds Most Americans Dread Heating Bills
(StatePoint) From using a hairdryer to warm up their sheets to cuddling with their pet, Americans will do some crafty things to stay warm in the winter—especially if it means
they can avoid turning up their thermostat. A new survey conducted by Duck brand, which offers products that provide simple, imaginative and helpful solutions for a variety of tasks around the home, finds out why people go to such lengths. According to the research, 61% of people dread receiving their heating bill in the winter. While the average monthly heating bill hovers between $100 to $200, respondents say the highest bill they’ve received in recent years ranges from $200 to $300, and 76% of people say they have experienced an increase in their bill over the past five years. “It may seem like the first thing people would do if they’re cold is to turn up their thermostat, but that’s not always the case,” says Randi Bujnovsky, product manager for Weatherization at Shurtape Technologies, LLC, the company that markets the Duck brand. “As it turns out, 80% of Americans say they have turned down their thermostat to save money in the winter.” The chilly temperatures this time of year clearly have an impact on people’s daily habits and even their sleep. Sixty percent of Americans say they have woken up in the middle of the night due to being cold in the winter. Respondents say they have tried

everything, from wearing socks and a sweatshirt to bed to sleeping with three or more blankets and using a space heater, to cut costs on their bill. However, there is a simple task that can help solve many of these woes: home weatherization. According to the research, more than half (51%) of Americans weatherize their home to prepare for the changing seasons, and 80% of people say they have noticed a decrease in their heating bills by using weatherizing solutions, such as window insulation kits, weatherstrip seals and door draft seals that slide on the bottom of the door to block drafts. Try Duck brand weatherization solutions to help keep the cold air out. From the Duck brand Max Strength Rolled Window Insulation Kit to the Heavy-Duty Weatherstrip Seals, there is a product for every room in the home. “Creating a warm home during the cold weather months is easy, and yet nearly half of Americans aren’t taking advantage of the benefits of this simple task,” Bujnovsky adds. “If weatherizing the entire home seems challenging, begin with one room at a time. The survey finds the living room is the draftiest part of the home, so that is a good place to start. Installing a window kit that will add a barrier between the outdoor air and your home’s interior or putting weatherstrips around your windows can make all the difference and will help minimize energy loss.” ____________________________________
