2022 CHICAGO YACHT CLUB VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP FLAG OFFICERS

DEAR CLUB MEMBERS:

Nick Berberian, Commodore Lisa Curcio Gaston, Vice Commodore Raymond Groble, Rear Commodore Laura Sigmond, Secretary Michael Kovacs, Treasurer

The 2022 Season has begun! While there was a lot of activity at the Club during the winter months with the Nautical Education Series and other special events, it is now that wonderful time when the boats are beginning to go into the water, and you can sense enormous excitement all around the Club. The Club Calendar shows

This year, Club members will have even more opportunities to get out on the water. We have expanded our Club fleet this Season to include for member rental a brand new 25’ Sea Ray Power Boat and a 22’ Duffy Electric boat. These complement our existing fleet of Sonars and Tom 28s that are available for member charter. Paddle boards and kayaks will also be available at both Belmont and Monroe. The Sailing School has a whole host of educational programs for adults and juniors that will incorporate our latest addition of Lasers and two hydrofoil Skeeta boats to our extensive fleet of 420s and Optis. Classes in Power Boat operation will also be expanded. Chicago’s lakefront will for the first time host the SailGP U.S. Sail Grand Prix on June 18-19. The Club will be playing a significant support role and there will be many opportunities for members to join in the

The Club’s Regattas will also be back in full force including the 113th Race to Mackinac Presented by Wintrust on July 23, with the Cruising Division starting on July 22. After extensive discussions with the Mackinac Island City Council and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, we were able to secure the right to return to having boats rafted in the Mackinac Island Marina thereby enhancing the participation in the post-Race celebration. The Porch Party will again be at the Grand Hotel on Sunday afternoon, but the Sailors’ Celebration Party on Tuesday will move this year to open space near Mission Point. Even for those not participating in the Race, this is a great opportunity to cheer your fellow members on and enjoy Mackinac Island with friends and family. Finally, membership is the lifeblood of the Club and there is no better person to identify prospective new members than you--our current members. Last year we had a record level of more than 140 new members, thanks largely to member referrals. As reflected by the boating industry reporting record levels of demand, there is an increased focus on family oriented outdoor activities in response to the pandemic. If you know someone who shares your passion for the water and who you believe would be wonderful new member, encourage them to apply before our initiation fees increase on May 1. Contact our Membership Director, Elizabeth Haley, at membership@chicagoyachtclub.org to receive significant savings and other benefits before May 1st.

SPRING FROSTBITE

J88 NORTH AMERICANS FALL FROSTBITE GREAT LAKES HIGH SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIP

A LETTER FROM THE ON THE WATER DIRECTOR BY SKIP DIEBALL

SPRINGTIME IN THE CITY One minute we are in shorts and flops, then next we have the parka back on. So is the life with our OTW team as we get geared up for a fun spring session. With High School sailing well underway and Frostbite on the verge of starting, our team is adjusting to a fun 2022 season. The past 5 months have served up some new and exciting things for our various teams. Our Opti and Laser programs set up their winter base at Davis Island Yacht Club in Tampa. Coach Flor Cerutti had the singlehanded sailors out nearly every weekend in the Florida sun. In addition, she squeezed in a number of clinics, including one with our foiling Skeetas. Talk about having fun! Similarly, Coach Hector Guzman had the C420 teams geared up at Jensen Beach, Florida on the other side of the Sunshine State. Between events and clinics, the C420 teams benefited from a wide variety of conditions and weather. With both of our locations filled with CYC sailors, we have high hopes for a successful and fun 2022 for all of our sailors.

For the rest of the OTW staff, we were stuck in the tundra. Cam Borkowski spent endless hours at the CYC warehouse working on 420s, Race Committee and Coach RIBs. We are fortunate to have such a great workspace and as our fleet grows, so too does the work to keep them in top shape. Kudos to Cam for all his hard work and contributions to keeping the fleet shiny. I was able to get back into the competition side by diving into something new. I spent a number of weekends up in Madison, Wisconsin racing iceboats. I alternated between both the DN and the Renegade in getting many laps around the frozen Lake Monona. What fun to be speeding across the lake at top speeds. It was fun to regain the edge and I encourage everyone to try something new this summer on the lake. We have Kayaks, Paddleboards, Sailboats and Powerboats. 2022 will be one to remember and we are here to help you make the most of it. ✶

The kids weren’t the only ones having fun. Ivan Sagel and Chuck Nevel led two groups of Adults at beautiful Captiva Island for some performance training in Colgate 26s. Their time there in mid-February caught them in the midst of a frontal system that provided plenty of breeze, which contributed to some fun memories! Congrats to all that were able to get south and sail. Blinker ✶ Spring 2022

CYC POWER FLEET: PREVIEW OF THE 2022 SEASON Are you looking for more ways to enjoy your boat this summer? The Power Fleet is an active social group in the Club and each calendar year offers a variety of on-the-water events and other fun opportunities for individuals and families. Here are brief descriptions of four major types of activities that are sponsored and organized by the Power Fleet.

GIVING BACK CRUISES The CYC Power Fleet is very involved in giving back to the community by hosting numerous outreach events. Power Fleet captains volunteer to take guests from organizations including the Chicago Light House for the Blind, the Chicago Boys and Girls Club, and Fathers Who Care for cruises along our beautiful lakefront. The Special Needs Cruise is our largest giving back event, hosting 120 guests from four Chicagoland facilities. Typically, we need 17-19 volunteer boaters to signup in order to accommodate our guests. Everybody involved agrees: we have as much fun as our guests! New for this season: members of the CYC Sea Scouts will be assisting us with all of our events.

13

Blinker ✶ Spring 2022

THE POWER FLEET’S 2022 SCHEDULE FOR GIVING BACK CRUISES: June 21 Special Needs Cruise 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 28 Boys and Girls Club of Chicago Cruise 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 19 Youth Sight Impaired Cruise 11a.m. to 2 p.m. August 5 Old Guard Cruise Time TBD August 22 Staff Appreciation Cruise 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. August 23 Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind Cruise 11a.m. to 2 p.m.

FLEET CRUISES Tired of just cruising along the Chicago lakefront? Want to explore other ports on Lake Michigan with other CYC members? If so, please join the Power Fleet for one or more of its Fleet Cruises. The Power Fleet usually participates in three club cruises during the summer. We have an early cruise in June, which we call the Shakedown Cruise, our Annual cruise, and then an Extended Cruise. The Annual and Extended Cruises are usually around the first week of August. We get great participation with about 15 member boats and 35 to 40 people. This year, we will cruise to the South Shore Yacht Club in South Milwaukee for our Shakedown Cruise. The weekend plans include a joint party with SSYC on Friday night. Saturday will consist of a potluck style breakfast, a walking trip to the farmers market, a dinghy cruise up river with stops for cocktails, and a group dinner at a local restaurant. There are fun entertainment venues within walking distance. Most boaters will depart early on Sunday morning. The cruise is about 90 miles from Chicago with the coast always in easy sight. Please consult the club calendar for updates, and reach out to Ed Falkenhayn ejfalkenhayn@yahoo.com with any questions.

NAVIGATIONAL RALLIES (P-LOGS) Join the Power Fleet this summer for some camaraderie and a little competition. The concept of a Navigational Rally is simple enough: cruise a 12-15 mile course utilizing some of your electronic equipment in a predicted amount of time. Each contest will have the course, where to turn, and instructions for when and where you can turn on and off various pieces of electronic equipment. Prior to the race, you will predict your time for each leg and your over-all time. The boat that finishes the contest closest to its predicted time wins. Sounds easy and it is! These contests allow boaters to familiarize themselves with their boat’s handling, best cruising speed, and their electronics. Best of all you can take your family and friends along and spend more time on the water with them. In addition, after the cruise is over, you can join other boaters for some post-race fun.

2022 SCHEDULE OF FLEET CRUISES: June 10 - 12 Power Fleet Shakedown Cruise South Shore Yacht Club, Milwaukee August 5 - 7 Power Fleet Annual Cruise Reefpoint Marina, Racine, WI August 7 - 14 Power Fleet Extended Cruise TBD (Grand Haven and Frankfort, MI, are confirmed)

THE POWER FLEET’S NAVIGATIONAL RALLY SCHEDULE FOR 2022: May 21 — Monroe station Training session (by Clyde Ainley) “Ride along” opportunities will be offered for new participants. Start Time TBD. June 25 — Monroe Station “Monroe Opener” and “Southern Challenge” 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. July 10 — Belmont Station “Belmont Opener” and “Chicago’s Best” 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. August 5 At the beginning of the Annual cruise Start time will vary. August 27 — Monroe Station “Giovan“ (Club Championship) Start time TBD.

OPPORTUNITIES TO SUPPORT THE RACE COMMITTEE The mission of the Race Committee is to facilitate a fair, quality, and competitive racing program. To help fulfill its mission, Power Fleet members volunteer their boats to support the Race Committee with their major Regattas. The types of opportunities include: SIGNAL/PIN BOATS – Signal and Pin Boats are anchored at either end of the Start/Finish line and give you a great view of all the racing action. CHECK-IN BOAT – The Check-in Boat is anchored inside the break wall off Navy Pier for the Race to Mac Saturday starts, where boats check-in before heading out to the racecourse. MARK SET BOATS – Mark Set Boats set the “marks” on the racecourse. Smaller center console powerboats works well. JUDGES BOAT – The Judges Boat takes the judges around the racecourse to watch the racers during the start and running of the race. MEDIA BOATS – Media Boats take local and national media out onto the racecourse to provide media coverage of the event, including drone operators. SPONSOR/VIP BOATS – Sponsor/VIP Boats take sponsors and VIPs out to the racecourse to provide them the opportunity to view the event.

WELCOME TO WOW 2022 BY NANCY BERBERIAN

The Women’s Committee has planned a series of programs this year focused on leadership, sailing, creativity and just having fun. WOW kicked off the 2022 Season celebrating International Women’s Day. Our own CYC member, Peggy Sloan, shared her leadership experience at the Shedd Aquarium. It was inspiring to learn about all the amazing initiatives our neighbor, the Shedd Aquarium, is taking to protect the environment and marine life as well as the prominent role of women there. Our discussion on leadership continued with a panel discussion on How to Make CYC Your Club. Vice Commodore Lisa Curcio Gaston, Secretary Laura Sigmond and Board Member Nancy Snyder led the discussion on the many leadership opportunities available to members and the pathways to get there.

For some culinary fun, the ladies went into the kitchen for a Pastry Decorating 101 class with CYC Pastry Chef Faith. After Chef Faith shared baking and decorating tips, the ladies grabbed pastry bags and decorated prepared items under Chef Faith’s professional guidance. Make sure you sign up for the Ladies Annual Luncheon on May 4. We are planning a special day with Omega. Come hear Omega’s story of their involvement with space, Hollywood, Olympics and the America’s Cup while enjoying a delicious Chef Larry special lunch. The WOW Sonar Sailing Series will continue again this year on Friday evenings. It’s a great way to improve your sailing skills and have a fun night out on the water with friends. This year we have split the 12 week program into two sessions. You can register for the Early Session, Late Session or both. We added an additional new sailing program this year, WOW Learn to Sail. You can start your sailing education with this class. This multi-day course will give women the skills needed to confidently skipper and crew a day sailing keelboat. No prior sailing experience is necessary. Registration is now open for both of these sailing programs. These programs sell out quickly, so sign up now to secure your spot. See you at the Club! ✶ Blinker ✶ Spring 2022

CRUISING SAIL FLEET IN 2022 BY JERRY GURTHET

Are you ready for the summer of 2022? With temperatures rising, so does the anticipation for the summer season. Getting back on the water is on all our minds, as we complete our winter boat work and prepare to splash soon. Personally, I cannot wait for days of short cruises up and down the Chicago shoreline, or extended cruises to the other side of the lake and beyond. The Cruising Sail Fleet (CSF) has been working on our 2022 season and have interesting events scheduled for the season. Please review the calendar in the Blinker, or you can always log onto the CYC website and check out all the club activities. Our first event of the season is a double header on Saturday May 7th at Monroe. During the day, CSF will be sponsoring a presentation “Safety at Sea for Cruising Couples” and then in the evening, a “Meet and Greet the Fleet” party on the deck. We will be raffling two seats to a Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley Field, inside the beautiful Catalina Club, located behind home plate. All CYC members are invited to both the Safety presentation and/or the meet and greet that day.

The CSF fleet is also planning three extended weekend cruises this year in early June, August, and September. Please plan and mark your calendars to join us for these trips to other Lake Michigan ports. The Cruising Sail Fleet (CSF) is dedicated to having fun on the water with fellow members who share the same sailing passions. Our members come from all walks of life, but our commonality is the love and enjoyment of being on the water. We are always looking for new or current CYC members to get involved with our fleet. Please feel free to contact Jerry Gurthet with any questions about our group, or just plan to be involved and join one of our events.✶

SHIELDS – CLASSIC BOAT REHAB BY SKIP DIEBALL

Entering my 3rd summer here in Chicago, I feel great about the On-the-Water programming and I have assembled a great team that has really helped CYC achieve success on many levels. In so doing, I hope to enjoy some summertime sailing myself and was recently trying to find a boat that fit both casual sailing and an occasional race or two. Getting to know both Gary Ropski and Mike Schwartz, the Shields caught my eye. Not only does it have classic lines and a beautiful sail plan, it also provides a nice platform for my family of 5 to enjoy an afternoon on the water. I set out to find a boat and as luck would have it, I found “Robin”, hull #249. It was in great shape and hardly sailed the past several years. As with all of my boats, however, I just can’t do anything plug and play. I have

21

Blinker ✶ Spring 2022

to create projects to give it a personal touch. Well, I’m ½ way through a complete rehab of #249 and happy to report that I’m in the home stretch of giving it a new look (paint) and upgrades (hardware and rigging). I’m sure with things heating up in the OTW offices, I’ll slow down on the progress, but I have my eye on making as many RYF events as possible with my family. From there, I’ll team up with my old mates from the Etchells days and sail in the National Championship in Newport, RI in September. Talk about a great reunion! Jon McClean, Jeff Eiber and I sailed many miles together and share a number of championships. Though the Shields Class is as serious about racing as any, I’m very much looking forward to the journey both locally (with the family) and nationally (with Jon & Jeff). ✶

PLUMM DE LA CRUZ’S JOURNEY TO CYC MEMBERSHIP BY PLUMM DE LA CRUZ

Well my adventure began on the water of beautiful Lake Michigan during the summer of 2021 at CYC Belmont Harbor. I got all geared up to set away on my 420-sailboat. I will admit, I was afraid at first but once on the water I had an incredible feeling! On the last day of sailing camp, as we sailed back into Belmont Harbor all of us sang the song ‘We are Castaways!’ I will never forget that. We ended the day with the white plate awards, and I received an award for ‘Future Coach.’ I wanted to continue my sailing adventures, and I found out that I was able to join CYC as a member. Being me, I filled out my application right away. I want to thank my sponsors Diane Foote, Alice Martin, Eileen O’Neill, also including Elizabeth Haley for making my Membership possible. I attended the CYC Meet and Greet mixer on Tuesday, October 2021 and felt so welcomed! I also received an awesome CYC bag filled of all sorts of sailing gear at the member mixer. I look forward to continuing to connect with other CYC members and one day being on one or more CYC committees. I hope to see you out on the water! “Ahoy!” ✶

WELCOME ABOARD THE CYC SEA SCOUT SHIP 5870 “PRIVATEER” After a couple of years of COVID shut down and tribulations, the ship is afloat and up and running. Didn’t know CYC had a Sea Scout program, or didn’t know what Sea Scouts are? You are not alone.

A LITTLE HISTORY OF THE SCOUTS When an American newspaperman and entrepreneur, W.D. Boyce, was in London in 1910 he was helped across the street to his hotel by an unknown Scout, who refused a tip afterwards, saying he was a Scout and that’s what a Scout does. The Scout gave Boyce the address of the Scout headquarters where Boyce picked up information about the group started by General Robert Baden-Powell. Boyce brought back the information to the U.S., where he and several other businessmen started a Scouting program. The Scouting program started in the U.S. in 1911 as the Boy Scouts of America, offering activities and life lessons while

23

Blinker ✶ Spring 2022

in an outdoor environment. The Sea Scout program started in 1912 following the same model but with a nautical twist. The maritime industry of the day was a natural fit for the Sea Scouts. Initially, the Sea Scouts outnumbered the Boy Scouts. The program grew to its largest numbers, in the hundreds of thousands, up until World War II when most of the Scouts joined the armed services. The program never recovered after the war with numbers dropping off steadily until recently, when in the last few years it is growing again! However, it still remains one of the smallest and most unknown programs in the Boy Scouts of America.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS IN 2025 The Chicago Yacht Club started its Sea Scout Ship’s charter in 1925 and is currently the oldest active charter in the nation, celebrating 100 years in 2025! CYC has had hundreds of Scouts come through the program with

many current members today. Many remember their Sea Scout days, and many had their first experience sailing on the small boats that the program uses to teach sailing. The ship has many boats that we use, large and small (power and sail), with several of the leaders offering to use their own to teach the Scouts. The program has had changes throughout the years and continues to offer many life lessons to Scouts, but the most important lesson is stewardship. Through this simple tenant, the Scouts learn leadership skills that will stay with them the rest of their adult lives. CYC’s Sea Scouts are heavily invested in nautical traditions and maritime history. They are learning seamanship skills aboard sailing and power vessels and helping out wherever they can at club events. The Scouts are active all year long. We meet on the second Saturday of the month either at Monroe or Belmont Station. There is an end of season fall camping trip, Christmas Ship activities, museum visits, spring maintenance of the vessels and swim lessons from October through May. During the off-season, they learn boat handling, sail theory, safety, marlinspike, navigation and maritime traditions. Once the boats are back in the water, they put all this into practice.

The Scouts help teach each other, the more experienced Scouts teaching the less experienced with the adult leadership providing program oversight. The program is co-ed for ages 14-21 with the opportunity to achieve the ranks of Apprentice, Ordinary, Able and Quartermaster (Eagle Scout equivalent). After 21 they can stay on board as adult leaders regardless of rank. It is not all about the rank for our Scouts; it’s about the personal journey, friendships and growth for each Scout that is most important. Our current adult leadership brings a broad range of boating and Scouting experience to the Sea Scout Ship. All have experience in boating and most importantly have the desire to work with the Scouts to teach and mentor, and the CYC ship is growing. All are welcome to join. No experience necessary, just a good sense of humor, patience and appetite for adventure. Contact Robert Bied, Lloyd Karzen or Ray Groble through the club’s website or Mark Corter, mccorter1@gmail.com for more information. Have a safe and healthy 2022 season. Fair winds and following seas. ✶

MAC REGISTRATION IS OPEN & T H E E A R LY N U M B E R S ARE OUTSTANDING

The temperatures are warming, and sailors are busy prepping their boats. It can only mean one thing: The Race to Mackinac is right around the corner. Registration opened this spring to a huge response. Already over 200 boats have secured their spot on the starting line, nearly as many boats as competed in 2021, and everyone has their eyes set on winning one of the world’s most prestigious freshwater distance races. If you haven’t registered yet, there’s still time. Visit www.cycracetomackinac.com today to sign up. “Whether it’s your 50th or your first, the Race to Mackinac always delivers an experience to remember,” said Race to Mackinac Chairman Sam Veilleux. “Our team has been hard at work, and we’re thrilled to announce the return of many race favorites – and exciting new updates for 2022.” One element sure to please competitors is the return of docking at the Mackinac Island State Harbor – the prime finishing location for the fleet to enjoy post-race celebrations. Rafting has returned for 2022, but in order to secure a slip or rafting assignment, competitors need to register – and pay the entry fee. As in past years, the Race will utilize both St. Ignace and Mackinac City harbors for overflow docking. This year, Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island will host the ever-popular Sailor Celebration and Awards Tuesday afternoon, July 26, on its Great Lawn. The resort offers a spectacular family-friendly environment, just a short walk or carriage ride from downtown and the Harbor.

25

Blinker ✶ Spring 2022

The Grand Hotel will once again host the famed Sunday evening Porch Party, a CYCRTM favorite for the significant others who arrive on the island early to await their friends and family competing in the Mac. “In addition to our Presenting Sponsor, Wintrust, and returning sponsors Mt. Gay Rum and Team One Newport, we are proud to announce Evolution Sails as Official Sail Manufacturer, and Crowley’s Yacht Yard as Official Safety Sponsor of the 113th race,” Veilleux says. “Crowley’s will be providing discounts on safety equipment, including AIS MOB devices and complete crew safety packages, to all race participants and will be assisting in our educational efforts throughout the year. Check out their Mac Safety Gear page for specials, and be sure to use the code MACRACER for additional discounts at checkout.” In preparation for the race the Mac committee is offering a helpful new resource called, So You Want to do the Race to Mackinac, with tips and answers frequent questions for first-time registrants from learning how to request an invitation, to preparing the boat and crew with the latest safety requirements, and more. The 113th Race to Mackinac Presented by Wintrust promises to be another incredible adventure, testing sailors’ skills and crews’ abilities. We hope to see you on the water, and to raise a glass with you on the island! ✶ For more information visit: cycracetomackinac.com

THE 10TH ANNUAL CHICAGO REGATTA IS SEPTEMBER 10, 2022 We’re excited to ring in 10 years of benefiting the youth supported by the CYC Foundation, the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital and SOS Children’s Villages of Illinois, with the city’s premier celebration of the camaraderie and generosity of Chicago’s lakefront community. The 2022 Chicago Regatta will feature one-design and distance racing, model sailboat racing, and a sunset parade of boats. We also look forward to the return of the popular leaderboard and the robust participation it brings to the event. The legendary Sweet Home Chicago dock party will include live music and a strolling dinnertour of the tastes of our unique Chicago neighborhood cultures. The Chicago Regatta unites racers, casual boaters, and shore-side enthusiasts from throughout our community around a shared passion and purpose. The collective altruism of our waterfront community achieved a new record in 2021, as the event gave more than $156,000 to our three charities.

Traditionally, a 10-year anniversary gift is that of aluminum, a metal that is a testament to strength and resilience. Despite a global pandemic, the Regatta proved the strength and resilience of our members’ and community’s commitment to supporting children across Chicago in 2021. We extend our most heartfelt and grateful thanks to our 87 incredible medal donors, leaderboard participants, and sponsors: Wintrust, Pinnacle Foundation, Pinnacle Yachts, BMW, and Larsen Marine. We’re excited to see participation soar in our 10TH Chicago Regatta. We look forward to welcoming one and all – let’s make 2022 our best year yet! ✶ To learn more, sign up or donate, please visit: www.chicagoregatta.com

A TRIBUTE TO MY OLD SAILING BUDDY BY PETER F. THORNTON

In 1972, I joined the Chicago Yacht Club as a “stinkpotter”. At that time, I did not have any interest in the art of sailing and certainly did not see myself as part of the sailing community. That all changed in the spring of 1974 when I met Gene McCarthy. His yacht racing war stories immediately grabbed my attention, especially his account of the great Mac storm of 1970. Gene’s larger than life experiences racing on the Great Lakes made me realize that I was missing something special. As a young man, my perception of sailing was forever changed, and Gene became my new role model. In the summer of ’74 Gene and I rented a C&C 39 named the Kings Courier and we signed up for a series of races including the Chicago to Macatawa Race and most notably, the Chicago to Mackinac Race. I can still remember getting caught in my first thunderstorm, paralyzed with fear, both hands locked onto the shrouds, watching in awe as Gene single-handedly took down the massive tri-cut spinnaker. Over the years, I have campaigned numerous racing sailboats, having poured untold time and dollars into the sport. To this day, I still blame Gene for having gotten me into this mess! But in all honesty, I have loved every moment racing on the Great Lakes. I have accumulated my

104 ft. Sailing Yacht, Whitehawk

own war chest of stories, the most memorable involving great friendships and time well-spent with my family. With my sailing and racing career in its twilight, thoughts invariably creep in telling me that maybe its time to hang it up. Fortunately, all I must do is take a look at my old friend Gene and his relentless passion for the sport and that gives me added adrenaline to keep on sailing. I guess he still serves as my sailing role model, almost 50 years after our first summer on Lake Michigan. This year, God willing, we will both attempt another Chicago Mac race aboard the Whitehawk. After breaking John Nedeau’s record of racing 65 Macs last year, my old friend Gene is attempting to add one more for the record books for a total of 67 Macs. What an accomplishment for these two Great Lakes sailors. I’ll be surprised if anyone ever comes close to beating these two Old Goats! As one of the newest inductees into the CYC Old Guard (25 senior-most members of CYC), I hope that our membership will continue to support all our club’s many traditions, including the Chicago Yacht Club Foundation. Its mission of promoting awareness and appreciation of the nautical arts, especially with the young and disadvantaged is extremely important. Thank you, Gene, for inspiring me to take up the wonderful sport of sailing. Your mentorship back in the summer of 1974 serves as a great example of the power and importance of the mission of the Chicago Yacht Club Foundation. May their efforts continue to inspire others as you have inspired me. ✶ Blinker ✶ Spring 2022

J88 NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP BY GREG MIARECKI, CHAIR

SEPTEMEBER 21 - 25, 2022 This September, Chicago Yacht Club will host the J/88 North American Championship at its Monroe Station. The J/88 class is quickly emerging as one of the hottest classes in sailing. The J/88 is a 29-foot one-design sailboat that provides a fun, high-performance sailing experience. Boats generally compete in buoy racing with crews of six. The local J/88 fleet – known as “Fleet 4” – is the most active J/88 fleet in the world and is looking forward to welcoming teams from across North America for four days of buoy racing from September 21st through 25th. The Club is expecting 30 boats on the start line for the event, and more than 20 skippers and crews have already signed up. Wednesday evening of the regatta will feature a welcome event complete with an Irish bagpipe band. Thursday night will give skippers an opportunity to enjoy local Chicago cuisine with their crews and shore support teams. On Friday, the regatta will host a festive dock party featuring “Libido Funk Circus” – the Midwest’s

31

top regatta band. All Club members will be invited to join the fun. On Saturday, competitors will enjoy a semiformal regatta dinner and will finish up on Sunday with a final day of racing and a prize-giving ceremony. Watch for more details about this exciting event, and plan to join us for our Friday night dock party on September 23rd! ✶

THE SHIELDS FLEET IS FORGING AHEAD BY MIKE SCHWARTZ

The Covid 19 crisis has not sunk the Shields Fleet in their efforts to foster one-design sailing competition. On February 16, the National Shields and Fleet 9 from Newport hosted the first of a three part Racing Rules Webinar led by prominent sailor and author Dave Perry. The February topic covered all the significant changes in the International Sailing Rules. Series 2 and 3, March 3 and April 6, covered rules at the starting line and at the up/downwind legs. The last rule focus was for windward & leeward marks and finishes. Racers from Oyster Bay to the Vineyard and Monterey to Buzzard’s Bay all participated in some heated and informative discussions. In another giant step forward, the Shields Class Foundation was officially recognized as a non-profit dedicated “To preserve authentic one-design yacht racing competition and culture through the introduction and education of new adult and youth sailors to Shields Class sailing everywhere”. As a result, CYC’s Fleet 3 hopes to have an extra Shields available for local teams to participate in our great racing. Please contact fleet capt. Mike Schwartz if you are interested.

Congratulations are due to the formation of our newest fleet at Holland, Michigan here on our own Lake. We hope to see them send boats to join in our CYC regattas this season. As many of you may know, the fine “Great Lakes-Ocean Challenge Cup” sits in our showcase at the Belmont Station. This year the competition for the cup will be held at the Beverly YC, Buzzards Bay. ✶

BRINGING THE JOY OF BOATING TO CHICAGO CHILDREN BY GREG MIARECKI, CHICAGO YACHT CLUB FOUNDATION PRESIDENT

As 2022 gets underway, your Chicago Yacht Club Foundation is working hard to bring the joys of boating to kids around Chicagoland. The Foundation has partnered with the Chicago Children’s Museum on Navy Pier to bring an exciting exhibit to the Museum designed to introduce kids to boating. “Boats: Captain Your Own Adventure” will open in late May and run through mid-September. The exhibit will use interactive learning methods to teach kids about our sport.

Two fellow members, Bryon Ehrhart and Captain Dave Truitt, have combined to provide $20,000 in matching gifts to support this exciting initiative. Special thanks to Bryon and Captain Dave for their support. Please consider joining them and the many other members who have already stepped up to support the exhibit. Your Foundation will host a special preview of “Boats” on Thursday, May 26th for all donors. Fellow Club member John Benish and Cook-Illinois Corporation will provide transportation from the Club to the Museum. The Foundation will host a fun after party at the Club, featuring bar food, desserts, and champagne. Don’t miss the fun. Please make a gift to your Foundation today and plan to join us on May 26th! ✶
